I don't know if this would help you, but I found it very useful. Every time I got the urge to save something - anything. I went through a few simple questions.
Can I scan it or take a photo and get the same value? (Recipes, postcards, birthday cards, newspaper & magazine articles, most junk souvenirs) - if so I do that and make a backup and throw the thing out.
If it is a 'useful item' how much would it cost to replace? If that price is more than the cost of my rent per square foot to store it - out it goes and I just plan on buying it when I need it.
Finally, if it really is just a useful thing that I have no current use for, I use freecycle, craigslist, local recycling programs and I make sure it finds a good home - thus alleviating any mental burden I had.
As far as hoarding trash, I got nothing, just force yourself to throw it out, or get a maid.
[–]amfngm 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
whelp, anything under $2 just went into the bin for Goodwill. Thanks :)
[–]Kayoh44 140 points141 points142 points 7 months ago
Throw it away man, just throw it away. Be stronger than what's going on inside and just throw it away. Easier written than done, but just throw it away.
My mother in law is a hoarder. So we set limits for her. This is your closet, it's where you can store things. It's this big, you can fit this much shit in it. If you can't fit the shit, you throw shit away. So far she's done fairly well with it. Set limits for yourself and just throw it away.
[–]hckynut 64 points65 points66 points 7 months ago
I'll bet that closet is one insane mess.
[–]Kayoh44 63 points64 points65 points 7 months ago
Pretty much yeah.
[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 7 months ago
At least that's all you'll need to clean out when she moves out. Until you find that secret sub-basement that was put in last year...
[–]Kayoh44 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
No, that's what we'll be burning when she moves out. Her house is still trashed but it's not a knee high garbage pit. The closet isn't navigable, it's basically a mini landfill. Old news papers, books, ketchup packets from fast food places, clothes that don't fit anyone but she's keeping as gifts for when they do. It's a plethora of shit. I honestly kind of wonder if it doesn't spread out into the rest of the house when we don't visit (she lives in a different state) and she jsut cleans it up before we come down. Either way I guess the closet serves it's purpose.
[–]queenbeebbq 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago
My mom is a passive-aggressive borderline hoarder. If I throw away something, and she realizes it too late to get it back from the trash, she will never let me forget it. I just went to visit her, and she let me have it for throwing out her old Sears catalog two years ago. She said, "They don't make catalogs like that anymore. It was an antique." I said, "It was out of date, you couldn't order the stuff in it anymore." She said, "I wanted the CATALOG, not the stuff in it. That catalog was worth something." Help me....
[–]untaken-username 18 points19 points20 points 7 months ago
There's a technique for talking to kids where you just try to empathize with them and let them figure out the resolution on their own. Supposedly it works well for (younger) kids because a lot of times when they are complaining they are just expressing their frustration at a lack of control over their environment. It works OK with my 3 year old, but is really designed for older kids, I think, elementary school aged and such.
But anyway, maybe try it with your mom? The idea is the dialog would go something like:
MOM: "They don't make catalogs like that anymore. It was an antique." YOU: "It sounds like the catalog was important to you." MOM: "Yes! The catalog was worth a lot. It was an antique." YOU: "The catalog had both sentimental and monetary value to you, didn't it?" MOM: "Yes, and you threw it away." YOU: "I hear you are upset at me for throwing away your catalog."
MOM: "They don't make catalogs like that anymore. It was an antique."
YOU: "It sounds like the catalog was important to you."
MOM: "Yes! The catalog was worth a lot. It was an antique."
YOU: "The catalog had both sentimental and monetary value to you, didn't it?"
MOM: "Yes, and you threw it away."
YOU: "I hear you are upset at me for throwing away your catalog."
Etc.
Basically you are just expressing to them their emotions.
I don't know how this would end with your mom, but with kids it usually ends with the kid coming to mimic your empathetic statements, but with some closure, like:
KID: "That catalog was important to me. But there are other catalogs."
Or:
KID: "That catalog was important to me. I should be more protective of things that are important to me."
And so on.
But anyway, the whole idea here is that you adopt this empathetic pattern and therefore don't internalize it, don't get defensive, etc. You validate your mom's feelings and let her work it out from there. Don't take the blame and don't be a whipping post.
[–]abledanger 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
MOM: I hear you are upset at me for punching you straight in the neck. Now go fish that fucking catalog out of the god damn garbage can, you ungrateful prick.
[–]superfusion1 14 points15 points16 points 7 months ago
while your intentions are good, this would piss me off if you tried this with me. I'd realize that you were patronizing me and it would will me with rage because you aren't even being sincere, you are trying to play games with me.
[–]untaken-username 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Well, I wouldn't use it with you unless you were a mentally ill person who I cared a lot about. If you weren't ill I wouldn't use this language, and if you weren't someone I cared about I wouldn't still be there standing and talking to you.
[–]garlicdeath 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Yeah, that's the stuff you see in sitcoms and cartoons when the characters are going to group therapy. I would lose any patience if someone talked to me like that
[–]withbellson 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
This is a very valid method of dealing with people like this. Regrettably, I have actually had to use it on my parents -- and wow, does it ever piss me off when I have to do it. I mean, you expect your kids to act like kids, but the people that raised you aren't supposed to need this kind of handholding. Ick.
[–]zmansman17 18 points19 points20 points 7 months ago
Seek treatment now. With Ferret already in your name and your own fear that are predisposed to this type of thing, I wish you only the best of luck mate.
[–]Big_Baby_Jesus 20 points21 points22 points 7 months ago
1) Talk to a mental health professional.
2) Do you have enough money to hire a maid once a week?
[–]GenTso 49 points50 points51 points 7 months ago
Yes, but then you have to clean up before the maid comes for the first time!!!
[–]torridzone 21 points22 points23 points 7 months ago
I don't think that's the case, I've met some very messy people who simply do not clean their cars or other living spaces and let trash pile up in the backseat of their cars simply because they are too lazy to take trash out of their car when they get home. The two people I'm thinking of now that are like that would clean their cars every six months or so when the mess got in the way some immediate issue e.g. I need to take 5 people to a party, time to clean car.
I also know a hoarder, my good friend's mother is a hoarder and that looks very different from someone who is just disgustingly messy. I mean she has collected so much stuff that there are paths in the house to cut through it all, and most of the stuff is largely inaccessible because of the glut of crap. My friend would throw things out in nearby dumpsters, and she would go out and find the stuff and bring it back to the house.
tl;dr Hoarding is a very different beast than being gross
[–]WhiteTrashConnection 294 points295 points296 points 7 months ago
"Why yes officer, you may search my car."
[–]SensibleMadness 205 points206 points207 points 7 months ago
This actually happened to me once. When I was younger, I never cleaned my car. It wasn't covered in rotten food or anything, but the passenger floorboard was just covered in all sorts of accumulated crap (candy wrappers, paper, old junk mail, that sort of thing). I was pulled over for a burned-out tail light and the cop asked if he could search my car. I looked at the mess and just said, "knock yourself out, man". He spent about 5 minutes sifting through the crap on the floorboards and then just gave up. I thought it was pretty funny at the time. These days I keep my car cleaner.
[–]Pravusmentis 123 points124 points125 points 7 months ago

I'm thinking 2 empty chip bags, put the stash in the first bag, then put the second bag in the first chip bag on top of the stash, sandwiching the stash between the bags. Like a hidden compartment.

[Furiously scribbling notes]
[–]purzzzell 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
Known people who did this - they had piles of trash in their car, though obviously not as severe as the one in the picture. One empty McDonald's bag had contraband in it.
When his car was searched, the officer just threw it aside without looking in it.
[–]ughwhatwasitagain 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
I man, I had a ounce of weed in a big mac box and a half eaten quarter pounder in a bag, the cop pulled out the quarter pounder and unwrapped it. made a disgusted look and threw it back into the bag with the big mac box with the weed in it.
man lucked out big time, he didnt check the last box.
[–]pewpnstuff 57 points58 points59 points 7 months ago
I had something similar happen to me (not my car but a buddies.) We get pulled over and the cop sees the floors covered in empty chip bags, empty bottles, etc... Cop says: "What's all the trash down there?" and me, whom he's directed the question at, unwittingly says: "Uhh... trash?"
He was not impressed.
[–]Abezilla116 27 points28 points29 points 7 months ago
Same thing happened with my dad's car. There was trash on the passenger's side and a shitload of work/school documents because my backpack had spilled out and i didn't feel like pulling over to pick it all up. He points out that i have trash there and I reply with a "no shit". He makes me step out and in a combined effort with the other cop he had with him, they searched the car. They each spent 5 min looking through trash just to find school work and condoms and a creepy letter from a stalker I had at the time.
[–]keyrah 18 points19 points20 points 7 months ago
You can't just make a post like that and not tell us about this stalker!
Ask and you shall receive.
Okay, I met this girl in middle school and I thought she was kinda cool but I wasn't into her. After a couple months of just knowing her she asks me out and I turn her down. She continued to stalk me on myspace (which was what was "in" at the time) and even sent her friends to threaten me online. Then they came by my house too. Most of her friends were girls so I was like, whatever. I'm not going to fight a bunch of girls. It was funny when my mom would answer the door though. She thought i was running some kind of harem and I was getting laid 5 times a week. That lead to a very awkward aids talk...
Anyways... this continued for a month or two until she left me alone. Then a guy named Adam approached me online. He was wondering what the fuck I was doing with said stalker saying he would kick my ass if I tried to get with her. I told him "look she keeps coming onto me and doesn't leave me alone, I'm not interested in her at all." So he backed off and left me alone, we actually kinda connected online and became sorta became friends. A year later I find out Adam doesn't exist and it was an alias she created. Some friends found out that they searched "emo guy" in google images and found most of his pictures. She got kinda hot when she got into highschool (she's a year or two younger than me) but that still wasn't enough to make me break the "don't stick your dick in crazy" rule.
I'm the kind of guy who will always deliver if someone asks. :)

I had a busy night. Rather than leave the condoms in the back yard of my ex's house she stuffed them in my bag in a hurry. Yes, outdoor sex.

My first official job was bagging groceries in a small town supermarket at the age of 16. One of our regular customers was an elderly, morbidly obese lady who smelled so putrid it made your eyes water. No one's gag reflex was safe in her vicinity. We simply called her The Cat Lady.
She wheezed constantly, and could barely carry herself to walk properly. "Put them there", she gurgled and hissed at me the first time I had the honor of carrying her 10-12 double-paper bags of cat food out to her stationwagen. She never said another word to me over the course of the next year I worked there, and I ended up stuck with her every time because the other baggers all wimped out, either actually vomiting or throwing a fit to get out of the task. I didn't blame them, really. It was truly awful.
What was going on in that car made the OPs pic look immaculate. The entire car except the driver seat was stuffed to the ceiling with junk, mostly trash. It was like buying a garage sale outright, stuffing it into your late 70s stationwagen, then hitting the fast-food drive-thru's enough times to fill every nook and cranny with filth. Stuff was rotting and molding, and had obviously been in there for years. It brings sweat to my brow just thinking back about it now to be honest, but here goes...
There was one spot in the very back where I would stack the bags of cat food after carefully opening the rear door. More than once I saw rats in there, scurrying away through tunnels and crevices in the garbage as I opened the car door. Everything was peppered with rodent shit. It freaked me out, but no one at work wanted to believe me, nor were they willing to see for themselves due to the stench.
She lived in a trailer house with a bunch of cats. No one really knew her or how many cats she had, but it was too many, and she was in no condition to actually care for them properly, let alone herself. She had eventually surrendered all the rooms to cat shit and trash, resembling her packed stationwagen parked outside, except inside it was cats, not rats. The rooms were littered with the empty cat food cans and other trash and rotting detritus of her life, all coated in cat piss and shit.
Of course things came as they do and she died in there. Rumors around town were that the cats were eating her when she was finally found, dead in bed. I don't know if that was true or not, but the story doesn't end there.
The property owner had to get the piss soaked, shit filled trailer house off the property. There was no way anyone was ever going to live in it again. It was rotten to the core. He hooked it up to a truck to presumably have it towed out in the county and torched. A few blocks down the street, however, in a main intersection, it collapsed into a cloud of deadly stench and fell off the truck, breaking into pieces and spewing shit in all directions. People vomited, people ran for their lives. Eventually, it had to be cleaned up by a guy on a backhoe wearing a mask. The intersection smelled for weeks. Even months later we would sometimes detect a hint of it.
TL;DR: A car full of rats, a house full of cats, a dead old lady and an intersection full of putrid rot.
[–]kFuZz 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
I love that story.
I can imagine Faulkner writing that.
[–]mountfuji 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Goddamn.
A few months ago I had to clear a house that had been boarded up for 10 years because of a mother and daughter contesting a relative's will. Compared to this, that seems like heaven now.
Except for the mattress in the room where the roof caved in from water damage, dripping water on a said mattress for 10 years or less. Long enough, anyway, to leave only the steel frame of the mattress, and--literally--some sort of black goo, which I guess used to be the fabric.
I still ate my lunch later that day.

[–]TrueArch 52 points53 points54 points 7 months ago
Probable explanation: The car belongs to an employee of Walmart. There is a McDonalds inside and they eat it in their car during their lunch break every day. They're too lazy to clean out the trash so it accumulates.
My reasoning behind this: I work at Walmart and eat my lunch in the car. I'm guilty of having a small pile of trash accumulate on the passenger side floor before I clean it out.
[–]edgemaster191 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
If it's anything like my local walmart, yo have to walk past 4 garbage cans on your way back in to the store....Why leave shit in your car?

That's nothing... I was visiting Berkeley, CA one day with some friends for 4/20, and there was this car... Pretty normal car, parked right next to our smoke spot. We looked inside and saw the entire back half of the car, including the passenger seat was FILLED with trash, coke, and top ramen. The owner of the car walked by, and we could smell him from across the street, no lie. It was the strongest smell of piss and sweat I had ever smelled. I was gagging from just him across the street, and when he opened his car door, I threw up on the sidewalk and passed out from the stench. I can still recall the smell it was so bad... By far the worst thing I've ever laid my nose on.

If you did podcasts of you talking shit about Dan, you'd make me and a lot of others very happy.
[–]Electro_Jade 22 points23 points24 points 7 months ago
Leave Dan alone! He's just misunderstood.
[–]coughcough 40 points41 points42 points 7 months ago
Dan is lucky to have such a compassionate friend
[–]fondlemeLeroy 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
Dan needs to scrub his offensively pungent ass right fucking now. I'm serious.
[–]WellTarnation 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
As long as Dan keeps his unwashed self away from my bidness, he can do whatever the fuck his unemployed ass wants!
[–]GreasyDan 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
Thank you.
[–]Gbotey 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Nice try Dan.

That's going to nocontext
[–]hungwellish 10 points11 points12 points 7 months ago
I was driving behind a pickup truck once that had a 'Retired Navy Seal' bumper sticker on it. I'm thinking 'wow, that guy must really be in shape' (I know, I'm naive) I pull up next to him, there was SO MUCH garbage in the passenger seat that I couldn't even see if anyone was driving.
[–]shakajumbo 26 points27 points28 points 7 months ago
That was just camouflage.. rest assured there was a sniper, trained on your forehead if you had touched the smallest bit of that 'trash'
[–]radicalnovelty 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
As someone who just recently moved from Berkeley, I'm pretty sure I've seen this exact same car. They were often parked on my street near Peoples' Park.
[–]CAPS_LOCK_USERNAME 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago
Next time just breathe through your mouth, man.
[–]HugeIdiot 64 points65 points66 points 7 months ago
But then he might taste it.
[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 25 points26 points27 points 7 months ago
No joke, I could taste the smell down my throat from breathing through my nose. My throat was locking up at this point and I started gagging, and then I threw up and passed out.
[–]ContentWithOurDecay 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago
Passing out was probably for the better.
[–]dirtyfries 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
I think I saw that car, or one like it, on Piedmont in Oakland last night! so gross.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 7 months ago
Yes. That totally happened.

[–]MoronTheMoron 92 points93 points94 points 7 months ago
So, without Burger King that would be my car. Let me explain:
Every work day for lunch I get McDonalds, mind you, most days I get the bacon ranch salad and small fries so I'm not that much of a fatty.
Anyways, I eat it in the car, because I am not going to go eat at work, because people will bug me.
So my trash piles up like that on my passenger seat. I never empty it at home, because when I get home, it is video game time. I also never use my car except driving to work, everything else we take the wife's car. So that pile grows and grows, and then comes burger king.
In burger king's drivethru they have a trash can at the end of it with a big plastic tunnel extending up towards your car's window so you can throw shit out in it.
I fill that fucker up everytime I go to burger king with all the McDonalds bags on my passenger side.
I've been doing it for years that it feels like a tradition :)
[–]wretcheddawn 45 points46 points47 points 7 months ago
I don't know about you, but I hate trash and clutter. Not that my house is perfect or my car, and I can understand not vacuuming your car even, but how hard is it to grab the trash when you get home and throw it away upon walking in the house? Fast food even comes with it's own bag, it's like a minitrashcan for the crap. Just dump all the trash in there when your done, when you get home, it's within reach, just grab it and trash it inside.
And seriously, you don't do anything at home but play videogames? How are you still married?
[–]dekonstruktr 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
A very obese coworker of mine once told us a story about his cleaning habits.. he said, "You know how once a week you kinda have to go around the house, filling a garbage bag with all the fast food bags/wrappers/cups that have accumulated that week?" Ummm no, I don't actually know about that.. He said he typically fills the whole fucking trash bag!
[–]zersch 21 points22 points23 points 7 months ago
"You know how it is when you're washing yourself with a rag on a stick in the living room, and your foot comes off the stink pad and you slip on an errant Jack-in-the-Box bag causing you to fall face first into your living room trash pile..."
[–]MoronTheMoron 10 points11 points12 points 7 months ago
I can make it sound worse, I pass my trash cans on the way into the house.
My wife's joke on why we are married for so long is that she has no sense of smell. (Which is true, she was born without it.)
[–]ThirdTimeRound 19 points20 points21 points 7 months ago
Well there ya go wretcheddawn. Rabbit hole just gets deeper.
[–]davidrools 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
people really have that? (no sense of smell) Have you seen Walk Hard?
[–]4funsies 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
Reminds me of my buddy.. He used to work at McDonald's and for every lunch he would walk across the street (in his McD's uniform, mind you) to the Burger King. The manager of the BK ended up giving him free food every time he went in.
True story.
[–]too_many_secrets 10 points11 points12 points 7 months ago
Smart manager.
[–]knoxindy 225 points226 points227 points 7 months ago
This is very sad.
[–]MoronTheMoron 72 points73 points74 points 7 months ago
I don't think so, but now you are making me doubt the decisions I have made in life.
[–]winteriscoming2 28 points29 points30 points 7 months ago
I think that it is a poor decision to keep your car in a disgusting state because you can't be bothered to postpone "video game time" by 5 minutes a few times a week. Someday, someone that you want to have a good opinion of you will be exposed to your car. This could be a potential friend, business associate or even your boss. While this may come up rarely, the cost of losing out on that friendship/contact/promotion because you can't be bothered to throw trash away will greatly outweigh the few extra minutes of video game time that you saved.
There is also the issue that if you are pulled over the state of your car is going to cause the police to be less lenient with you.
[–]MoronTheMoron 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
This is very true and one of those nagging thoughts in my mind.
[–]Aikidi 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
Don't worry dude, that Burger King plastic trash chute thing is the only reason my car is clean too.
[–]MattSayar 42 points43 points44 points 7 months ago
Man, it makes you happy, so let it keep making you happy.
[–]purplepansy11 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
Taken to extremes, this could be a very bad philosophy....
[–]MattSayar 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
You mean like everything taken to extremes?
[–]melechkibitzer 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
You and I sir are like twin brothers separated at birth. I too pile mcds things in my car until I find one of those garbage cans with the cool shoots on them, although I usually find them at mcds or chik-fil-a I haven't been to a burger king in a while
[–]csonnich 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Life Pro Tip:
I keep a plastic bag (like the kind you get when you buy something almost anywhere) with the handles looped around the shift stick in my car.
Anytime I get some trash, I put it in the bag. That way, I don't have to throw it away right away if I don't want to, and it doesn't pile up in my car.
Then, when the bag gets full, I take it out of my car and throw it away. Typically this happens maybe once a week, so the trash doesn't have too much time to get nasty. If it starts to smell bad, I might throw it away more often.
Then I pull out a new bag from my glove box (where I usually keep 6-8 spare bags) and put it on the shift stick. That way, I can replace the old one without too much effort.
This system has worked for me for years -- it's not much effort but also not too disgusting.
[–][deleted] 64 points65 points66 points 7 months ago*
You are aware that a bacon ranch mcdonalds salad likely has just as much if not more calories than their quarter pounders, right? Plus with the fries and I'm sure a drink on top? Every day?
I mean, I don't really care what you put inside your body, but if you think you're being semi-healthy here you may want to put a bit more thought into it is all before you get surprise diabetes or something.
[–]MoronTheMoron 49 points50 points51 points 7 months ago
I lost 25 lbs by eating this meal and counting calories. The salad has no chicken and no dressing and comes in around 140 calories. I also eat the apples for 100 calories with the caramel. finally the small fry is the biggest one at 250 calories. I also only drink water.
Thanks for thinking about my weight though :)
/Numbers seem just a little high, going off of memory.
[–]skwidddy 40 points41 points42 points 7 months ago
you've got to be the most health conscious McDonald's eater I've heard of. Props.
[–]Aikidi 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Honestly, I've read that of the burger chains, McDonalds offers the healthiest options. They've started offering legitimate cuts of white meat in those chicken selects, and the salads they offer are legitimately low fat and calorie.
As with all things you have to look out for sodium, but they've at least made an effort.
[–]DrMuffinPHD 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
The Bacon Ranch Salad isn't really high in sugars. It's high in sodium and saturated fats.
So he's not risking diabetes. He's risking heart disease :D

"I don't empty it at home because that's video game time. "
I'm sorry but that's awful
[–]cmw72 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
I'm lovin' it!
[–]mildly_inappropriate 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
I would LOVE to see that car and the driver after even the simplest 15MPH fender bender.
[–]Skeezybum 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
No kidding. I just thought of trash flying around like a car sized boggle game.
[–]Awesomekip 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
Hey man. There are two bottles of water sitting on top. Clearly they are making a push for healthier living.

SHOTGUN!
[–]reluctantusername 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Walmart + Fast Food + not really caring about trash anymore. Smells like poverty and depression to me. I know it all too well - hope this person finds a way to pull themselves together. I feel for them.
[–]abadera 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
Most Walmarts I have been to have McDonald's in their parking lot. However, this is the smallest one i've seen!
[–]ShibuyaStation 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
and some Wal-Marts actually have McDonald's inside them.
[–]kickpuncher1 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
How many of us at some point have been a car hoarder? I'm sure it was never close to this bad, but in high school and college I had about 50 water half drank water bottles. Npt to mention homework, books, food wrapers, and clothing for what ever sport I was in at the time
[–]retrobuddha 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Morgan Spurlock is that you?
[–]fuzzyjedi 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I used to keep my car like this as a teen. Partially eaten and rotted food. Just random garbage. Aww, the memories. I did it for a reason though.
No cop is going to keep searching your car when the drug dog as found his 3rd McDonald's bag with food in it.
