Even when I provide this reference of scale you can barely comprehend.

[–]R3xz 36 points37 points ago

Amazing how a storm so big and violent beyond our imagination could look so smooth and peaceful from a large distance.

[–]FireSail 16 points17 points ago

And ever lasting

[–]seriousmanda 18 points19 points ago

Yeah, that's insane. That huge earth size storm has seemingly no end of energy. Sometimes I fantasize about being in an an unbreakable sphere where I could just go right in the eye and watch it all. sigh the things we'll never know. Jupiter is such a tease.

[–]humminahummina 10 points11 points ago

Sometimes I fantasize about being in an an unbreakable sphere...

If you haven't already, please watch The Flight of the Navigator.

You have just inspired me to re-watch it. Thanks!

[–]rugtoad[!] 6 points7 points ago

Compliance!

[–]humminahummina 3 points4 points ago*

I'm currently 22:47 into the film. I'm 30, and I haven't seen it since I was 9. I'll make a relevant reply as soon as I know what your comment is referring to.. :)

*~49.20: "Compliance."

Goddamn! Just watch this film (on your own; I just googled "watch navigator online" ); you don't need to follow my link. Awesome film! Compliance?

"Why me?" "Why not?"

[–]Ajinho 5 points6 points ago

|unbreakable sphere

more like Explorers

[–]humminahummina 1 point2 points ago*

I think you may be right..

Edit - you ARE right! Thanks to this thread (and your comment), I just re-watched BOTH films. Not having seen either for literally decades, I am blown away at how awesome both are. I dont know why, but Im gonna go build a fort out of blankets and pillows now and play WoT all night.

[–]Ajinho 0 points1 point ago

i love both of those movies :)

[–]CodeRedFox 2 points3 points ago

Dont you mean watch "the Explorers" when talking about a unbreakable sphere?

[–]humminahummina 0 points1 point ago*

You are correct!

Edit - my favourite part so far is when the kid takes out a Polaroid camera to document the impossible sphere..

[–]reddit_user13 1 point2 points ago

Wow... all-star cast featuring SJP, Pee-wee Herman and Dr Johnny Fever!

[–]ironpony 0 points1 point ago

Howard Hesseman is a god among men.

[–]watermouse100 0 points1 point ago

I am going to rewatch!
Havent seen it in ages. Great show from what I remember. I always wanted his ship and his little pet he has.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I had always wished it was possible to be a ghost after death, so I could hang out and see what happens to the world after I'm dead, and fly out into the solar system to visit places like Jupiter. u_u

[–]shoebob 6 points7 points ago

The Earth too, looks peaceful.. from a distance.

[–]ThatGuyYouKindaKnow 1 point2 points ago

Wow... That was superbly poetic!

[–]shoebob 0 points1 point ago

Thanks dude, I think I was around a [5-6] at the time :D

[–]spistachio 0 points1 point ago*

This is how Jupiter really sounds.

[–]SweetNeo85 9 points10 points ago

Reminds me of this somewhat terrifying video, showing other planetary objects as if they were as close as the moon.

[–]crusaderofsin 1 point2 points ago

I wish we had an Earth orbiting the Earth. That would look so awesome.

[–]hurlyburlycurly 0 points1 point ago

When Jupiter passed I honestly cannot remember a time when i felt more utterly uneased... until I watched the video again, knowing it's coming is ten times worse!

[–]HeyCarpy 15 points16 points ago

http://i.imgur.com/FRFGK.jpg

It's weird, somehow I always thought Earth was even smaller than this.

(Please forgive the shitty MSPaint)

[–]tk425 1 point2 points ago

jupiter is actually about the same diameter as saturn. It's mass of course outweighs everything else in the solar system besides the sun

[–]yeropinionman 5 points6 points ago

Whenever I think about how big stuff like this is I get this physical feeling of awe and fear. I feel like a dog who wants to run behind a chair when there's thunder outside.

[–]frickindeal 5 points6 points ago

I lay on my back in the grass of my back yard and look at the stars and get that same feeling: there is no 'solid ground'. We're in the middle of fuck-all blackness. I get shivers. Then I go inside and watch South Park.

[–]yeropinionman 4 points5 points ago

We're just stuck to this rock with gravity like dust stuck to a balloon by static electricity.

[–]I_am_an_intern 6 points7 points ago

It seems like you spend at least 1-2 mins to erase the dark space of an earth picture.

[–]Sventertainer 0 points1 point ago

ooh, you're good.

[–]SkaveRat 2 points3 points ago

dude, there is an earth photobombing your shot

[–]ElectricG 10 points11 points ago

Thankfully Earth is ridiculously photogenic.

[–]Infymus -2 points-1 points ago

Amazing that you could fit approximately 1321 earths into that eye.

Edit: Looks like there is wide speculation on this, anywhere from 900 to 2000. Still, quite a lot.

[–]notkenneth 1 point2 points ago

That figure appears to be for the planet as a whole (that is, how many Earths you could fit into Jupiter).

The Great Red Spot is big enough to contain 2-3 Earths. So still ridiculously huge.

[–]FOR_SClENCE 102 points103 points ago*

Since I have experience researching NASA stuff from one of their programs, combined with my skepticism regarding the authenticity of the image, I did a little Googling.

This is re-processed Voyager 1 Mosaic. This was evidently the original image, unedited.

"This 12-footprint color mosaic of Jupiter's Great Red Spot was composed of 24 images captured through orange and violet filters by Voyager 1 on March 4, 1979 at a distance of about 1.85 million km. This is a version at 18 km/pixel (2.5 MB) Credit: NASA / JPL / color mosaic by Björn Jónsson"

Referenced image, from which the post is derived.

TL;DR: SOURCE

And here's the unmodified, redone Voyager mosaic as it was taken by the spacecraft, with minor touchups.

Source article, which was evidently authored by the individual who put the mosaic together.

[–]the_showerhead 45 points46 points ago

18 km/pixel

Damn, that really puts the size in perspective. Holy shit.

[–]Ceejae 11 points12 points ago

I was going to say... This actually looks like an oil painting. Still awesome though.

[–]Beakerbite 2 points3 points ago

I think I prefer the raw version over the colorized one.

[–]Semajal 1 point2 points ago

The one OP posted is also over sharpened. Lots of artefacts appearing in it

[–]fireball_73 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for posting this.

[–]MrKnikkers 2 points3 points ago

What are you suggesting? That there are details in this picture that did not exist in the original data of Voyager? (like CSI "enhance! enhance!") I don't think that's the case. Your link to the "undedited" version is just a very old and bad representation of the original picture/data.

[–]FOR_SClENCE 0 points1 point ago

What are you talking about? There are details here which weren't easily seen by Voyager. The author passed a mosaic of the original V1 images through his own processing techniques, which significantly improved the image quality.

The unedited version, if you're referring to the black-and-white, is the same mosaic as it was seen by Voyager 1, in monochrome. That is the only "representation" I found of the original.

To a degree, yes, they can literally shout "enhance! enhance!" at the screen. 2012's data processing techniques are vastly superior to those in the 1970's. They can run the exact same set of images from 1970 through today's computers to get incredibly clear products -- products which were impossible when the pictures were originally taken.

[–]MrKnikkers 0 points1 point ago

Because you used the word "skepticism" I thought you were implying that the picture wasn't real or that there was some artistic touchups or something. I think I misinterpreted your post. My point (and main personal interest in this picture which got in the way of interpreting your post) is that there is nothing in this picture that was not in the original photograph - no information was added.

[–]FOR_SClENCE 0 points1 point ago

Because I knew Jupiter, and especially the GRS, don't look anything like that in the image. If you look at the redone mosaic, all of the colors are pale, and blend into one another. The image which this linked to has had its contast and saturation turned way up, to make it look more dramatic.

Basically, if you flew past Jupiter at 1.85 mil km, you wouldn't see this.

[–]aethauia 0 points1 point ago

The original black-and-white is significantly more terrifying.

[–]QuarkandRom 17 points18 points ago

I wish that's what I saw in my telescope.

[–]therascalking13 5 points6 points ago

First thing I tell noobs when I take them out with my 10'' reflector. "You know those sweet Hubble images? This will be nothing like that."

That said, nebulosity around Orion's Nebula, rings of Saturn/stripes of Jupiter, and globular clusters are easy crowd pleasers.

[–]Zenephis 14 points15 points ago

What's neat is if you listen to what Jupiter sounds like while looking at the photo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3fqE01YYWs

[–]admbmb 11 points12 points ago

This sounds heavily edited, if not fake. Here are some actual Voyager recordings of Jupiter. Still creepy in my opinion.

[–]mrsentinel 6 points7 points ago

For the love of all things holy.. don't listen to that!

[–]estburt 1 point2 points ago

Talk about "if a tree falls in the forest.."

[–]ishallsaythisonce 9 points10 points ago

Instant homescreen background.

[–]jeanofjogon 11 points12 points ago

Dat mass.

[–]tr122 9 points10 points ago

Is the Red Dot on Jupiter really a constant storm, or do we even know what it is?

[–]_Jethro_ 27 points28 points ago

It is in fact an anticyclonic storm that has been in existence for at least 182 years, but likely longer.

[–]Mikheilm 20 points21 points ago

I read that in Data's voice.

[–]mumpelmann 3 points4 points ago

[...] at least 182 years, 7 months, 3 weeks, 2 days....." - "Thank you, Mr. Data."

[–]dcss 1 point2 points ago

That's enough Data.

Sorry Captain.

[–]iddothat 9 points10 points ago

It isnt timeless, but its been around a long time. And it shows no signs of stopping.

[–]Mysterian 2 points3 points ago

So, it's a trap?

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

No, it's a vagina.

[–]thatllbeme 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, so, it's a trap.

[–]Astromike23 7 points8 points ago

This is an important distinction. Large storms on Earth (hurricanes, extratropical cyclones, etc.) are always cyclonic. Their center is a pressure low.

The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is anticyclonic, so its center is actually pressure high. The closest analogue on Earth is not a hurricane, but a blocking high or, in the ocean, a meddy.

[–]sverdrupian 2 points3 points ago

While meddies are anticyclonic, they are subsurface features. Perhaps a better ocean analogue (in terms of of surface expression) are Warm Core Rings spun off of the Gulf Stream, Kuroshio and Agulhas Currents.

[–]Astromike23 4 points5 points ago

Interesting. I'm a giant planet climate researcher, not an oceanographer, but we frequently allude to oceanic phenomena because the deformation radius-to-domain size ratio is pretty similar between Jupiter's atmosphere and Earth's oceans. Earth's atmosphere has a deformation radius that's much closer to the domain size...thus why you can only fit a few cyclones along the jet stream.

It seems like warm core rings are generally associated with downwelling, no? The Great Red Spot doesn't seem to have a lot of vertical motion, though it does tower over the surrounding cloud deck...but that's probably more from orographic lift of the whole high pressure system moving isobars upwards. I was under the impression that meddies were just high pressure (due to increased salinity) lenses that were relatively free of vertical motions, and were spatially confined due to a geostrophic balance between pressure gradient and Coriolis force. At least, that's how the Great Red Spot works.

Damn, kinda wish this thread was in /r/askscience now...

[–]sverdrupian 2 points3 points ago

Vertical motion in oceanographic rings is really not that large either - it is just somewhat elevated compared to the small oceanic background levels. Meddies and cold-core rings display amazing persistence - some lasting several years if they don't crash into any topography. Meddies are identified by the high salinity anomaly but also their strong vorticity which I think is connected to their formation as the Mediterranean water cascades down the continental slope after it exits through Gibralter. Ocean rings are nearly geostrophic but I think the cyclostrophic term contributes a few percent to the momentum balance.

[–]pakron 15 points16 points ago*

Ok, I'm just gonna lay it out there. I HATE THE RED SPOT. There I said it. Why? Because this huge awesome planet that has so many interesting things about it is reduced to the fucking red spot. What's the only thing kids know about Jupiter? It's the largest planet and it has a stupid ass red spot.

Did you know it puts out twice as much energy as it takes in through a combination of residual cooling from it's formation, gravitational contraction, helium condensation, and radioactive decay? Neat!

Did you know that even though it is the largest planet, it rotates the fastest, with only a 10 hour day? Wow!

Did you know Jupiter's moon Ganymede is larger than Mercury and any of the dwarf planets? No way!

Did you know that "gas giant" is a bit of a misnomer, because Jupiter's core is also metallic, rocky, and contains vast amounts of heavy elements. It has also recently been discovered that the core is not in neat layers like most graphics portray, but the elements are all mixed up, and flow all throughout the core. Science!

These are just some of the fascinating features of Jupiter, which no one ever talks about because all you read about or see pictures of is the GOD DAMN RED SPOT!

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]pakron 4 points5 points ago*

I will never compromise my beliefs on Jupiter. They are solid as a mountain of granite.

For example, when is the last time you saw a picture of Jupiter without the red spot showing, mocking almighty Jupiter? Do a google image search of Jupiter. I dare you. If there is less than a 1:10 ratio of non-red spot to red spot pictures, I'll eat my non-existent hat.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]pakron 1 point2 points ago

Do they drill mountains for oil? I didn't know that was a thing. I would guess oil would be down not up, geographically.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]pakron 1 point2 points ago

I guess I meant topographically. It seems like you always want to go down to drill for oil. Deserts, dry lake beds, bottom of the ocean, etc. Don't remember seeing any oil drills on a mountain.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]pakron 0 points1 point ago

That does appear to have been a lake at some point in it's history. And it is the lowest point in your photograph. I'm not a hydro-geologist, though, what do I know.

But my brother is, let me call him.

[–]HawnSolo 0 points1 point ago

Was Jupiter supposed to be our second star?

[–]pakron 2 points3 points ago

Great question. Jupiter does not undergo any sort of nuclear fusion, and would in fact need to be 80-90 times more massive to become a viable stellar object. Even all the planets combined x 20 would not have enough mass to undergo fusion. There is no way Jupiter could have become a star.

The only reason Jupiter is as large as it is, is because evidence shows that two gas giants collided early on in the solar systems formation, creating Jupiter.

[–]McMeanface 10 points11 points ago

Never heard of that coffee brand.

[–]XCygon 1 point2 points ago

whenever I see pics of Jupiter, I suddenly get urge to drink coffee.

[–]HertzaHaeon 4 points5 points ago

The texture and lighting almost makes it look like an oil painting. So pretty...

[–]Mr_Dependable 2 points3 points ago

It was actually done on Draw Something.

[–]kris_lace 7 points8 points ago

[–]VisualBasic 0 points1 point ago

That sucks. I've submitted many links that get 3 karma but then I see the exact same thing the next day and it has 1500 karma. Go figure.

I upvoted your original post if that makes you feel any better!

[–]Boris740 0 points1 point ago

It's the Jupiter effect.

[–]paper_ducks 2 points3 points ago

I was informed I go here a lot a lot when I was a kid. Just to get more stupider.

This is giving me nostalgia for pictures we made in school by floating oily paint in a tray of water and laying a sheet of paper on top.

[–]fireball_73 1 point2 points ago

You should post this to r/spaceporn

[–]anti-everyone 1 point2 points ago

being from south louisiana, i eat crawfish at least once a year. like any good cajun, i have a personal recipe perfected after many years of trial and error that consists of mayo, ketchup and various other weird condiments found in the house, to use as a dipping sauce. after it's all mixed up it's kind of this pinkish fleshtone, but right before that happens, you get something that looks like this. if i could somehow maintain just that perfect level of mixture without it combining completely, i'd put it in a jar and call it anti-everyone's jupiter sauce.

[–]wolbscam 1 point2 points ago

van Gogh FTFY

[–]POWERGULL 1 point2 points ago

i dont know what it is about this picture. It changed my mood for moment.

[–]Oeab 1 point2 points ago

Every time I see these kinds of space pictures, I get this tingly sensation over my body, I feel like I have such a strong connection to whatever is the unknown beyond our planet, our solar system, and the universe. It's amazing how many things the word "beauty" can describe. From a girl, to a sunset, to a violent storm on another planet. This picture is beautiful.

[–]r_kay[!] 3 points4 points ago

If my guess is right, each of those little swirls is the size of Earth

[–]dang_Ling_modify_her 9 points10 points ago

Dunno what swirls you're talking about, but the Great Red Spot can fit 2 or 3 Earths in it depending on what size it decides to be at a given time.

[–]askthepoolboy 2 points3 points ago

To get more stupider. (sorry, always the first thing that pops in my head when I hear, "Jupiter")

[–]just_a_quantum_dot 0 points1 point ago

It's purty! It's kinda fun to think about what sort of atmospheric conditions are necessary to create a storm that has existed in a more or less constant state for the past ~190 years.

[–]NowhereDan 0 points1 point ago

Lovely this time of year.
