Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

that would take about 12 minutes in SimCity 2000

[–]spenamik -1 points0 points ago

The two buildings in the bottom left with the pointed roofs are there. They are smaller because the picture was taken from far away. I'm sure there are more, but those are two that I spotted right away.

It looks like they using Penis Pump since 1990s to compete with USAchina

[–]TangledPenis 11 points12 points ago

Wow. I want to see more pics like this. The short window of time to create such a change in such a large area. I almost wouldn't believe it.

[–]swordinthesound 2 points3 points ago

You should check out Shenzhen, and other Special Economic Zones. Went from rice fields to 10,000,000 people since 1979.

[–]SDRules 1 point2 points ago

I was just there last week and even some of the postcards on sale were out of date. You can't tell from that picture but the smog was horrible.

[–]zoltar_says 5 points6 points ago

Whenever I see a city grow so fast all I can think about is someone who gets a tattoo, then gets a shitload in a short period of time. You run out of room and you'll probably regret some of the additions in a really short time.

[–]thoroughbread 5 points6 points ago

Cities have planners and engineers and stuff. Your cousin just has that one dumb friend.

I think they will regret more what's lost than anything added.

[–]zoltar_says -1 points0 points ago

My cousin? What? It's just an analogy. Skylines are iconic, think about how long it took to make NYC, chicago, etc. They obviously have planners I'm just saying that each piece should be special, not just "Oh, I had this cool idea." "Alright let's do it right now"

[–]thoroughbread -1 points0 points ago

"Mr Mayor, construction of that new development project is ready to get underway. We just need your approval."

"Well, the project is very popular among our city's denizens, it will attract new businesses and industry and it's aesthetically pleasing. But I don't feel it's special enough. No deal."

Give me a break, dude.

I'm not the only person that tried to search for a single building that remains from 1990?

I couldn't find one... they're all gone..

[–]Cubejam 2 points3 points ago

ah, yeah! the lights and the distance from targets throws you off a bit

[–]jhoudiey 6 points7 points ago

first thought: WOW. ALL THAT WAS BUILT IN 10 YEARS? . fuck. this getting old thing is bullshit.

[–]swordinthesound 0 points1 point ago

I remember reading at one point (late 90s probably) that one-in-five existing construction cranes in the world were operating in Shanghai.

[–]FlaviusValerius 0 points1 point ago

and exactly the same thing about Dubai. Its all urban legend.

[–]atgm 0 points1 point ago

2010 - 1990 = 20 years

[–]internetsanta 0 points1 point ago

No! 1990 will always be 10 years ago.

[–]Logoll 13 points14 points ago

Am I the only person that would prefer to visit the 1990 Shanghai.

It just looks more....I don't know what the word is, mysterious maybe even romantic.

[–]xenoph2 5 points6 points ago

You might would enjoy Budapest then.

[–]negativekarmaguy 1 point2 points ago

I love budapest, such an awesomely beautiful city. It doesnt get as much recognition compared to Rome, Paris etc...

[–]Eifandil 3 points4 points ago

It looks more like a city full of people, with lives that are actually being lived.

The new one reminds me of a dystopian future fueled by a hierarchy of social status, while happiness and money are mutually exclusive.

[–]SDRules 0 points1 point ago

There are nice condo buildings right next to construction sites where the migrant workers sleep on top of each other right on the site. There is such a contrast between rich and poor.

[–]RenGader 0 points1 point ago

I think you read/watch/play too much cyberpunk.

[–]Eifandil 2 points3 points ago

I think you are correct, sir.

[–]PR05ECC0 0 points1 point ago

It was. Even in 2003 it was. Shanghai is China's gateway city, their showcase for the west. In the past decade they did their best to clean up and modernize to the point where if you were dropped on the street, you wouldn't know you were in China right away. Sounds nice but personally I don't like it. I miss the old buildings, I miss the character that China had. I liked living there because it was different from American. Now Its like any other city in the states.

[–]Get2dachoppa_plz 2 points3 points ago

One of the buildings (2010) looks like the burger king 'king' kneeling behind a building.

[–]willymo 0 points1 point ago*

Lol.

Edit: Dammit, should've said "Soon."

[–]raknor88 2 points3 points ago

i like the top pic better

[–]JennysDad 1 point2 points ago

I stayed in this section of Shanghai in 1999 (at the Pudong Shangri-la) - notice the buildings with cranes on them? I think remember them being under construction back then.

It was something to behold - the city line was filled with concrete shells, buildings with all the concrete work done, but no fixtures (windows/doors/etc).

[–]LeonHRodriguez 3 points4 points ago

[–]bureX 5 points6 points ago

Live on the top, party in the bottom.

[–]RenGader 1 point2 points ago

I always thought Hengsha was an incredibly stupid idea. What happens if one of the support beams collapses? Millions of instant deaths. I guess that's why it only exists in a video game.

[–]calvindog717 0 points1 point ago

I think that might have been part of the message behind it's design, that the world really has become overcomplicated with things piled up on top of one other. plus it looks amazing.

[–]EdMcMuffin 1 point2 points ago

Meanwhile in America, it takes over a decade to build one building in a whole in the ground in manhattan. :/

[–]santanabanana 0 points1 point ago

Both were beautiful :3

[–]Shanghaij13 0 points1 point ago

Looks like home.

[–]listen_god_damn_it 0 points1 point ago

A lot more clouds back then.

[–]alannya 0 points1 point ago

I thought the buildings were gorgeous when I was there this summer.

[–]shan4350 0 points1 point ago

wow what a difference - there are so less clouds compared to 1990...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I wonder where is blue sky and fluffy clouds?

[–]kanee2 0 points1 point ago

I believe that this picture shows a much early time then 1990.

[–]cgil9000 0 points1 point ago

i have an idea lets post this picture again...

[–]jianthekorean 0 points1 point ago

Where did the old clock tower in the bottom right hand corner go? It's sad to see such beautiful architecture replaced by such modernistic garbage.

[–]passivelyaggressiver 0 points1 point ago

I <3 SH more.

[–]f1manoz 0 points1 point ago

Guess some would call this progress...

[–]deliciousshitstain -1 points0 points ago

Yay Wal-mart
