A friend had this done when he was in a car accident. The car rolled and his hand was holding onto the roof/door of the car when it happened and he basically lost the top flesh on his hand, including the veins and arteries.

This procedure is done so you get blood flow to the hand in an alternate method, allowing the hand to heal and, I assume, transplant a new artery while that's happening.

If not for this, they'd amputate the hand.
