These are the coolest creatures ever invented. If I owned a house, could ferret-proof it, and didn't mind the smell, I'd have a bundle.

I've got 2 and they are the greatest ever. If you don't mind a little work, then the smell is manageable. I usually clean the cage every few days and that keeps it under control. Check out r/ferrets for more :)

The smell is actually manageable. Scoop out the litter pan every few days, replace litter completely and bathe the ferret every 2 weeks, and remember to wash all bedding/hammocks/tunnels when you do laundry. I only have one fert though so if you have more then you'll need to do a little more work.

Most of the time if you buy a ferret from a pet store the scent glands will be removed. This doesn't mean the ferret will no longer have its natural musky odor though.

You really shouldn't bathe a ferret unless they have something on them they can't clean up themselves. It's bad for their skin and coat and will cause them to produce more of an odor than a ferret left to clean itself. I have four ferrets. They're free to roam the house as they please, aren't bathed, have their scent glands removed and litter pans are kept clean so there is no smell.

I adopted mine from a friend who couldn't take care of her any more. There are lots of ferrets on Craigslist who need to be adopted and they are usually fairly cheap. A lot of the time they come with a cage and supplies too. If you want to get one from a pet store they usually run $100-150 for just the ferret. They require special care though so be sure ro read up on how to care for a ferret.

At the time, I didn't even know what a ferret was.
