This picture is from Orchard, Iowa. Its' a few years old, but it is real. Didnt happen today, thats for sure. Not a tornado, just a freaky fucked up cloud. The person who took this picture is a friend of our family. Lori is a super nice lady. Edit: snopes. http://www.snopes.com/photos/natural/iowatornado.asp

[–]imahugger 21 points22 points ago

It's a wall cloud. Usually indicative of rotation and a severe drop in barometric pressure. Precursors to tornadic activity.

[–]IHeartTornadoes 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually wouldn't even classify this as a wall cloud, at least not without seeing another angle and/or some video. Many people like to call any cloud that juts down sharply a wall cloud, but it often turns out to be a shelf cloud or some sort of outflow feature. This is likely one of those.

[–]cuweathernerd 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. The striations above it are a little strange, but I've seen that on really intense shelf clouds like this one. (please excuse the terrible picture, this is back from when cuweathernerd was bad at photography).

The smoothness of the actual feature leads me to think shelf. I've seen smooth walls (like this one from last thursday in SE NE) but not with that kind of clear striation.

[–]imahugger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I may concede and agree that it is a shelf cloud. The wall picture you posted looks poorly formed. In my experience the more "defined" the features are of a storm are indicative of the energy of the storm. IE. Really defined cauliflower like build ups are pretty good indications of convective energy in a storm/building storm.

[–]imahugger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well, judging by the distinctive "collar" around the "wall" it looks very much like a well cloud but it is entirely possible that I am not right. I am also basing my guess on the fact that shelf clouds tend to extend for some length with the passing front (particularly with faster moving cold fronts) and this cloud appears to have a relatively small diameter.

[–]IHeartTornadoes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The feature that appears to be a collar cloud is likely just another tier of the shelf. The angle at which this photo is taken plays some tricks. It's fairly rare for true wall clouds to be as "tall" as this feature, extending from a fairly high cloud base straight down to the ground. While this does happen, more often than not this occurs on the forward flank of a thunderstorm.

Also, notice the blue tint in the top-right corner of this photo. This implies that there is precip falling inside this area, something very common with shelf clouds but rare with classic wall clouds. One of the few arguments I could see for this being a wall cloud is that the flag is clearly blowing to the right, which could indicate inflow. However, it's just as possible that the flag is blowing to the right and towards the camera, which would again indicate outflow. Even if it is blowing towards the storm, it's very common for winds to be blowing towards the forward flank right up until the point that it meets the shelf cloud.

I always thought funnel clouds were origins of tornados? Do explain sir

[–]kilo4fun 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funnel clouds are basically tornadoes that haven't touched down yet. There are some larger scale structures in a thunderstorm that can generate funnels and tornadoes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesocyclone

[–]wishiwasonmaui 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a wall cloud. In the OP, the barn hid the fact that the wall cloud did not reach the ground. But as imahugger said, wall clouds and tornadoes are often seen together.

[–]peanutsblow36 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, I see now, thank you.

[–]IHeartTornadoes 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wall clouds form underneath the base of supercell thunderstorms. They appear as lowerings, often bowl-shaped, beneath the base. A true wall cloud will exhibit at least slight rotation. Get enough tight rotation (and a million other processes) and the result is a funnel cloud descending from the wall cloud, often followed by a tornado when the funnel cloud "touches down."

OK, I'll defer to the meteorologist here, but it sure looks like that thing comes down to ground level.

[–]cuweathernerd -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, seeing as it is completely a fake image, it is a null set. The original picture would surely show the cloud feature above the ground.

Tornadogenesis is really complex. Still, some of it comes down to the conservation of angular momentum.

You have a broad, rotating updraft. That's the thunderstorm itself: that's called the mesocyclone. Where that is particular adept at pulling in warm, moist air, where the updraft is strongest, the local conditions that determine cloud base height change, and a lowered cloud called a wall cloud forms. That rotates too, and faster. If the updraft become even more focused, through the interactions of subtle boundaries set up by wind hitting the back of the storm and outflow from the rain, it can isolate a small area of low pressure, which has an innate rotation from inertia. This keeps the area small, and the low can be strengthening by increasing the speed of rotation. That's where the funnel cloud/ tornado comes in. The idea is something like this.

That's leaving a lot out, but the point is, your wall cloud won't come to the ground like that.

Ok, so I lied. Once and a while it does. Case in point: the Manchester wedge.. Fortunately for most people, and unfortunately for cuweathernerd, that doesn't happen often.

[–]unohoo09 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

seeing as it is completely a fake image

The image is real, but 90% percent of the stories that it comes with are not true.

[–]cuweathernerd 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My assumption is that is a composted image -- one a picture of the town, the other, the cloud image.

Snopes says it is authentic, just mislabeled. I'm just not sure. Maybe it is just a sour taste and skepticism from seeing the image misattributed a thousand times, but things like the lighting, the flow direction (flag), the height of the feature off the ground -- they just don't add up in my eyes. I may be wrong, but it doesn't feel right at all.

As a meteorologist and storm chaser, every time some big weather happens, I expect to see this precise picture. It, and some of the stuff from Hollingshead.

I just wonder why people fabricate this stuff.... it isn't like there is a shortage of images of today's storms. The Little Soiux tornado (where the image came from) was rain-wrapped, so there weren't images of it -- that's a little more explicable? Maybe? I don't know much beyond my reaction which looks a lot like: ಠ_ಠ

saw that too. Sadly the version I was seeing had a terrible contrast enhancement applied, so it didn't even do the feature the justice the original did. Easy enough to refute - wrong storm mode, sunset, tineye, post the original..

I just happened upon this, and I want to thank you so much for clearing this up for me. I was in that Boy Scout tornado on June 11, 2008, as described in this article, and I remember being sent that picture and being told it was from my camp. I knew that building was nowhere on the property so I thought I was losing it, so I appreciate being reassured that there is still no evidence proving that I really am insane.

First of all, I would like to say that there is no tornado associated with this picture, it is just a gust front. Second of all this picture has been around for years.

[–]IWantSpaceships 1 point2 points ago

I thought it looked a bit odd. Now I'm disappointed I ever thought it was a tornado.

[–]MirrorHero 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hi, do you mind explaining the main differences? I can't seem to find anything that compares the two properly.

[–]Guyot11 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is an example of a gust front/shelf cloud: Basically a gust front is when rain falls it is quite cold (from being high up in the cloud) and when it hits the ground the force is converted horizontally and it creates a decently strong cold wind. As the storm matures the wind flow gets stronger and more organized until it forms like the above image. The cold outflow boundary (where most straight line wind damage occurs) moves away from the storm at the surface. When this occurs the warm moist inflow-air rises above this cold outflow boundary and creates an ominous shelf cloud which can look quite severe in some cases like OP. A tornado on the other hand is an updraft into the storm where warm moist air rises into the base of the storm, and as the storm becomes more organized, the rotation can tighten up and get closer to the ground until a tornado forms.

Wimp :P As someone who's spent my whole life in Oklahoma, I don't bat an eye at tornado sirens. A bit dangerous, but my thought process (as well as that of any Oklahoman) is 1. Is it coming towards me? 2. If not, where do I have to go to see it?

[–]IHeartTornadoes 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're the exact kind of idiot that people like myself are working hard to educate.

[–]IWantSpaceships 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And what makes you think that? I don't take warnings as seriously as I should? You get desensitized to it when the entire county sets off the sirens every time a tornado is spotted.

[–]IHeartTornadoes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, that's exactly what makes me say it. Of course you get desensitized to it, but you shouldn't. We're trying hard to educate people to the fact that just because it hasn't happened to you the last fifty times doesn't mean it won't happen this time. Right now, setting off the sirens for the entire county is about as good a solution as we've got, but we're working on it. People who use "I'M FROM OKLAHOMA THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME LOLOL" as an excuse for acting like an idiot are the same people that get killed in Joplin, Piedmont, Tuscaloosa, etc. They're also the same people that make it difficult for storm chasers trying to either report or research, sometimes both. Do yourself and everyone around you and start behaving responsibly when severe weather affects you.

[–]TheLyinKing 16 points17 points ago

So everybody is aware, there is a protocol involved in surviving a tornado such as the one in the picture.

Follow these steps:

A) Seek below-ground shelter if available, or find a ditch to lay completely flat in

OR

B) If underground shelter is not available, find a chair with no arms on it. Sit normally in the chair, then put your hands on the back of your head and lean all the way forward as far as you can. Next, kiss your ass goodbye.

To be serious for a moment, if you do not have a basement, seek shelter in the most interior part on the ground floor of your house. If you're on the road, get out and get in a ditch. Overpasses are dangerous as fuck.

Well trailers are big flat sided boxes that happen to catch a lot of wind. When they're empty, there is plenty of wind energy per unit area to blow it around in a strong tornado. You, however, are a puny human and if you lie flat with your feet pointing into the wind, there is not much surface area to push against you. Plus you're much denser than an empty trailer which makes it harder for the wind to lift you.

[–]rgraham888 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was an empty trailer, no tractors were attached. The tornado hit a distribution center on the edge of town. Those empty trailers weigh almost nothing, especially for their size.

[–]I_like_owls 2 points3 points ago

Imagine an industrial fan, a large empty cardboard box, and a piece of cardboard that has been laid flat on the ground. When you turn on the fan, which of the two items is going to blow away? The flat piece of cardboard will stay put because there is nothing for the wind to push against, whereas the surface area of the box gives the wind something to push against.

Same basic principle at work here. If you get close to the ground and press yourself down flat, the wind has a much more difficult time picking you up. It isn't 100% safe of course, but if you're running away you're basically turning yourself into a human kite.

Thank you for not claiming you just took this. That shit is starting to piss me off. Reposts, fine. Reposts claiming it's a photo of "my brother" or "just looked out my window" or "on my windshield?" Cut that shit out, man.

This was in Orchard, Iowa, in 2008 (about 5 miles from where I live). I'd have shat myself if I'd been home to see it.

This picture was going around after the March 2nd tornado came through my town. It's been around for awhile, in case it wasn't mentioned in the comments anywhere. I'm too lazy to read.... err... I mean, I'm at work and don't have time to read them.

Scary stuff. The beast passed about half mile from my house. We got lucky with hail damage only. Got a new roof headed my way.

This was a storm that hit in Iowa back in 2008. If you try and search it it will say it was the storm that killed 4 kids in the boy scouts. But this was a storm the day prior to that. June 10th, 2008.

I'm almost positive this is a photo of the tornado that hit the little sioux boy scout camp in Iowa. http://www.ketv.com/r/16579276/detail.html

Reason #312 why I am glad that my mom got me the fuck out of Oklahoma when I was a small child. (My first memory, literally, is that weird pea-soup green that the sky gets before a tornado.)

Sometimes I wish I can gotten into meteorology instead of computers. I'm absolutely fascinated by all kinds of weather phenomenons, but more specifically tornadoes and hurricanes. Tracking them, finding out why they do what they do, what makes them tick. I'm always sad to see people hurt, losing their homes and in some cases, their lives, but I'm utterly fascinated by what these storms can do. Looking at what remains after such an event. It's breath taking sometimes to see it. I'm both terrified and awestruck by such things. I really think I should switch gears from computers to meteorology.

After taking this picture, the man dropped his camera and heading towards the tornado in attempt to save his family who had previously been eaten by said cloud.
