It's amazing how much I relate to this. I was 18 and had just moved from Indiana to China and back to North Carolina due to my father's work transfer. When I was living in Indiana, I considered myself spiritual leaning towards Jesus and I wore 3 crosses everyday and thought about a cross tattoo. Then I was shipped my grandfather's book collection after he died. He had every Sagan book and I admired my grandfather more than anyone else so I thought, what was it about this guy that my grandfather needed all of his books. I spent one December and January reading every Sagan book and it hit me. In the course of 60 days, the universe got bigger (actually my awareness of it exponentially grew). But the story is that I went into college a religious studies major and will now be graduating with a BA in Psychology and a BS in Astronomy from Florida state university. Carl, you helped save my mind.

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 24 points25 points ago

Well then, stranger who is living a life eerily similar to mine. It's great to know that others have gone through the same thing. Sadly, I didn't get away from Christianity before the cross tattoo was on my arm.

[–]face1138 19 points20 points ago

Hey Guy. Don't regret that tattoo. That's a mark of you having lived life. It's one thing to be an atheist. It's another thing to be an atheist and to have been through faith. To understand both ways of thinking and make a choice. You can wear your past on your arm, cut into your flesh and still pronounce to the world that you believed so strongly once but than realised the truth. I still wear a cross around my neck for this very reason.

[–]adrite 10 points11 points ago

I also got a religious tattoo before my deconversion (with a subtle cross as part of the design). People ask me if I feel stupid for getting it, and I tell them no. Tattoos are reminders of places we've been and things we've gone through. Allow it to keep you humble when you deal with religious people, and remember you were once in their shoes. :)

[–]face1138 2 points3 points ago

That's good advice. I often try to be humble when talking with them having been in their shoes. It isn't always successful though. But I'm generally not the most humble person in any situation.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

i have christian tattoos but i don't treat them religiously at all. I've read the bible and i like the general message it gives, kindness and such and such. its like getting a dragon or something, reminds me of childhood stories n fairytales n shit.

[–]Lets_buttfuck_Jesus -1 points0 points ago

It's the such and such that'll kill you.

[–]The_Holy_Handgrenade 0 points1 point ago

I don't think Jesus would like you.

[–]Lets_buttfuck_Jesus 0 points1 point ago

And, your point is. . .?

[–]The_Holy_Handgrenade 0 points1 point ago

Jusr give J.C. a reach around and lube up. Go easy on the man.

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 1 point2 points ago

This is a thought I have had before. Every time I look in the mirror it reminds me of who I was and how I believed. It also reminds me my reasons for leaving those beliefs behind and the process of deconversion I went through. I don't regret getting it though. At least it can be covered with a sleeve lol.

[–]shawnsonium 0 points1 point ago

If anything, it may work as a rebuttal to those who would accuse you of never being "a true Christian." You were evidently Christian enough to want to bear a marking of the cross for your entire life.

The Bible does forbid tattoos, but it also forbids you from trimming your sideburns and beard in the previous passage, so that's evidently not a problem with most Christians anyway, somehow.

[–]wojovox 2 points3 points ago

ouch. Now, I'm just straying from tats as I spend all my money on tuition.

I don't think it's strange though how similar we are. I think it's cool to realize there are others that are just like you. It shines light that we're all more common than different.

[–]punkyjewster03 0 points1 point ago

Ichthus fish here.

[–]crazy_desi 0 points1 point ago

haha I'm atheist and I still got a Hindu "Om" tattoo on my arm because it looks cool.

[–]lestiforget 0 points1 point ago

Cross tattoo = hard rock. No regrets. Add thorns motif maybe.

[–]jochens 0 points1 point ago

Make it a lower case t...

And when anybody asks, say "the t stands for danger"!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Hey! I'm from Indy too! I live in Carmel, near Indianapolis. I have just recently become an atheist and I'm looking to become an astrophysicist or an astronomer one day. I am 14

[–]mildly_competent 1 point2 points ago

I went to Arsenal Tech. Stay strong. Take the highest-level math courses you can through high school, and learn some computer languages if you can.

[–]sabrepride 3 points4 points ago

I'm a theoretical physicist (close enough, I am interested in things big and small) from the originally from the NE suburbs as well. And an atheist. It gets better when you go to college (unless you go to a Christian college I suppose). Also, take ALL the math you can possibly take. Really learn it. Same with physics. It's much more important to understand everything you're learning than to just do enough to get a good grade.

[–]mildly_competent 0 points1 point ago

(I assume that this was directed toward the comment that I commented on... but I appreciate the advice, and agree with it 100%. Even if you don't study physics, take as much math as possible. It's useful no matter where you go.)

[–]merebrillante 2 points3 points ago

Wow, FSU has a great psych department! You went to the right place to switch. :)

[–]wojovox 1 point2 points ago

Actually, I'll be obtaining my Psych BA from USF then continue to FSU for Astronomy BS.

[–]merebrillante 2 points3 points ago

OIC. Sorry, misread that. :)

[–]wojovox 5 points6 points ago

No you didn't. I didn't give adequate information because I didn't foresee a comment like yours.

[–]pukestainsdaily 1 point2 points ago

Congrats from a fellow nole.

[–]wojovox 1 point2 points ago

what's a 'nole'?

[–]a_haar 1 point2 points ago

Florida State Seminoles.

[–]wojovox 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I'm still a Bull @ USF. another year and I'll be a Seminole.

[–]GuitarBOSS 1 point2 points ago

[–]wojovox 0 points1 point ago

Yes

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Hey! I'm from Indy too! I live in Carmel, near Indianapolis. I have just recently become an atheist and I'm looking to become an astrophysicist or an astronomer one day. I am 14

[–]wojovox 1 point2 points ago

lucky you. I was 18 when I started to wonder about the cosmos so you'll have 4 years on me. I'm always excited to hear a younger person want to become a scientist. If that remains your dream into college, I really hope and wish the best for you.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Thank you! I have always had an interest in unlocking the mysteries of the universe. And I would rather try to do something important in life than strive to become the best basketball player or rockstar.

[–]wojovox 1 point2 points ago

That's a big statement coming from you. A lot of young adults your age want to pursue shallow lives. There must be something special about you, but I hope there are many others like you. In the end a basketball player only throws a ball and a rockstar only sings, but an astrophysicist contemplates and wonders the universe forever.

[–]Dan4456 0 points1 point ago

Hey! I'm at FSU working on a degree in (premed) biological sciences and astronomy as well =D mostly because of Carl Sagan and Neil Degrasse Tyson.

[–]wojovox 0 points1 point ago

Good to know there will be fellow Redditors when I join. I'm wrapping up my Psycho BA @ USF and then moving to Gainesville. World needs more celebrities like Sagan, Tyson, Dawkins, and Harris. Not those rick fucks in hollywood who play pretend for money.

[–]redoswald -1 points0 points ago

if only you had gone to a real school and not FSU.... smh.

[–]wojovox 1 point2 points ago

How is FSU not a real school? There's teachers and books and classes. Again, how's it not a real school?

[–]redoswald 1 point2 points ago

i'm playing mate. my uni requires that I trash that detestable collection of building, if you know what I'm saying? :P

[–]wojovox 0 points1 point ago

No, I don't know what you're saying. Actually, I don't think you could have made that more vague.

[–]rottinguy 19 points20 points ago

two years ago you were going to be an astrophysicist. You just didn't know it yet,

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 3 points4 points ago

I really like that way of thinking.

[–]tsingi -1 points0 points ago

LOL!

Two years ago he was planning to be a youth minister. What he didn't know at the time was that he was going to study to be an astrophysicist.

[–]rottinguy 2 points3 points ago

This just highlights the fact that what you are planning, and what will actually happen are seldom the same thing.

I remember a day when I was planning to go home, hang out with friends, and maybe smoke some pot. In reality I got hit by a car, and spent the next two weeks recovering in the hospital.

I was on my way to the hospital the whole time, I just didn't know it.

[–]HeyJewed 16 points17 points ago

I was a Catholic youth minister for years and was about to join the seminary, then I decided to join the Army instead first...

Thanks to books like these and tons of research on my own part, I am now an Atheist studying petroleum engineering and have never been happier in all of my life.

Also, after having had sex, I really think I dodged a bullet with the whole seminary thing... ಠ_ಠ

[–]ticklemepenis 6 points7 points ago

As someone with an astrophysics degree, I'm going to let you in on a little secret:

Only ~1/5th of people with a PhD in Astrophysics actually get a job in the field, and no one hires if you just have a bachelors. Not to crush your dream or anything man, but there's really not much of a market for astrophysicists.

Edit: Actual physics, however, is desired and useful.

[–]wolffml 6 points7 points ago

Good for you. I had 12 years of "Christian" school and ended up studying Physics at college, so you're story is familiar as I was also inspired by "Cosmos."

[–]Wizardis 5 points6 points ago

you should check out r/carlsagan

[–]lucifergoocifer 4 points5 points ago

I guess we should all be thanking him.

[–]Akronica 2 points3 points ago

Bravo Sir! "For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan

[–]iamriot 2 points3 points ago

[–]Tuckman66 2 points3 points ago

Protip: It's almost impossible to find a good job in that, and they still don't pay well with the best jobs in that field. Try just physics.

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is a piece of advice I have received several times and something I am considering. The major program follows the same lines for both astrophysics and physics so I can choose either way.

[–]Tuckman66 0 points1 point ago

Well all i can say is best of luck to you then.

[–]MacFourTwenty 1 point2 points ago

I am on the same path, I was going to go to Lee University after HS about 6 years ago, I went from Hovind to Sagan, and I am much better off. Welcome to the club and hopefully we'll work together someday and discover something awesome, we'll name it after Atheism lol

[–]couragefox 1 point2 points ago

Godspeed!

[–]Moneybags_McBigCock 1 point2 points ago*

Good for you OP! I always wonder what the world would be like if parents dropped their kids off for a few hours on Sunday mornings someplace where they could learn about quasars and black holes and how stars and planets are formed.

[–]ferrihydrite 1 point2 points ago

getting a copy of "Cosmos" when i was a little kid helped steer me towards science, for sure. i also credit it for the fact that i've never really had supernatural belief, because the truths as described in the book and in the series were so much more beautiful and interesting.

[–]narwhalcares 1 point2 points ago

I will upvote this when you get your degree. It's the only way to prove you're not a faddist.

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 0 points1 point ago

Then I shall return when said degree is obtained with pics to prove it happened.

[–]supernova1331 1 point2 points ago

I can relate as well. I was incredibly lonely throughout Lutheran middle school and i made my first real friend on the first day of public high school. And my second. And my third. And so on and so forth until I was surrounded by the love that I was promised by Christians but I never got. Those wonderful, godless people saved me from myself and I could not thank them more. I'm acting now, loving science fiction (I want to go to a film school to learn to make science fiction tv/movies), out of the closet, and I have the most amazing boyfriend on the planet. GO REASON!

[–]Im_The_Doctor 1 point2 points ago

Similar thing happened to me. I was hardcore Christian about a year and a half ago. I was a junior in highschool, so I was thinking about what i wanted to do. I didn't want to get my faith challenged, so public university was out of the question. I thought about going to my churchbody's college but it was way too expensive.

So I decided to never go to college, and that I was going to enlist in the Marine Corps for 20 years and then retire. Nothing against the military at all, I'm glad that people are there to protect out country when it is attacked, but I was doing it for the wrong reasons. I didn't value my own education, and I wanted to make cash easy, and then have pretty good retirement benefits. It wasn't about loving America or what she stands for, I'm not even incredibly patriotic, and I'm a pacifist. But, I became an atheist last year, and I realized that I don't have to worry about my faith being challenged, and that differing opinions are good for the brain. It opens the mind, and prevents being stubborn. Now, after taking next year off to work, I'll be going to either UC Berkeley or San Jose State. I'll be studying computer science, or physics or both. Part of this is due to Carl Sagan, NDT, Hitch and Dawkins. And part of it due to my discussions with an atheist friend, as well as my own thoughts.

[–]up-vote_for 0 points1 point ago

And an up-vote for you, sir! May you inspire many other minds!

[–]merebrillante 0 points1 point ago

I like that, but I would have appreciated a self post, rather than an image link. I'm interested in reading your story.

[–]linearcore 0 points1 point ago

YEAH!

This is strangely relevant to my path as well. I graduated from college with a B.A. in Literature 7 years ago. Very recently, unemployed and with few prospects, I said, "fuck it, I'm gonna be an astrophysicist."

I am now enrolled in college again and in the process of teaching myself all the maths. I have Carl Sagan to thank. But, to be honest, I have to thank NdGT for giving me this direction more than Sagan. (Though Sagan inspired NdGT in many ways so...etc.)

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 1 point2 points ago

Same here to some degree. NdGT is super inspiring now but Sagan was the first to get me interested in Astrophysics and the way the universe works.

CONGRATS DUDE

[–]breatherevenge 0 points1 point ago

I was hoping it was going to be a GIF of him nodding with that creepy smile.

[–]underworlder 0 points1 point ago

Do an AMA?

[–]Skeezybum 0 points1 point ago

Perusing popular. See pic of Sagan. Auto up-vote is de rigueur.

[–]here_for_the_lols 0 points1 point ago

From the thumbnail I thought it was Joey Tribiani

[–]clm222 0 points1 point ago

The Stephan hawking book/documentarys is what fueled my interest into theoretical physics

[–]phliuy 0 points1 point ago

I read your title as "now, i'm an astrophysicist"

Whoops. Almost asked you how in the hell you did that in two years

Good luck!

[–]my_mind_is_Free[S] 0 points1 point ago

So, it appears from a lot of the comments that the general consensus is that astrophysics is difficult to find a job in and regular physics is the way to go. The university I'm going to basically has a concurrent track for physics/astrophysics so it would be easier to decide later if need be. Thanks everyone for the advice!

[–]spacitron 0 points1 point ago

You mean you dream to become an astrophysicist, right?

[–]ProtoDong 0 points1 point ago

Yes, Tom Cruise scares the religion out of most people.

[–]AudibleKZ 0 points1 point ago

All hail Allmighty Ron DeGrassi Sagan! Upboats to the left!

[–]yihahitsjosh 0 points1 point ago

Wow. My dad is a pastor. I still live at home with my parents and I go to church to help out. I have not yet planned when I was going to tell my parents i'm atheist whether or not I even should since i'm still living at home. I'm not exactly sure how my dad would take it, but I imagine he'd take it very badly. It's just cool to hear or someone experience something kind of close as to what am right now.

[–]dangochan808 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts exactly! I love this man for expanding my mind and helping me strive for my goal, to be an astrophysicist, so I could possibly be a fraction of how amazing he is.

[–]Metabog 0 points1 point ago

Make sure you're good at physics first, lol.

[–]Octopusbread 0 points1 point ago

Thinking for yourself was too hard?

[–]lillebj0rn 0 points1 point ago

I am turning 30 this year. Come autumn i will enroll at university of Oslo. Physics, astronomy and metrology. All thanks to Carl Sagan and Neil Degrass Tyson! :) For science!

[–]frozengiblet 0 points1 point ago

I find it amazing how most of you have a moment of realisation... What stopped you from thinking rationally in the first place?

[–]Cozygoalie 0 points1 point ago

“We were hunters and foragers, the frontier was everywhere. We were bounded only by the earth and the ocean and the sky. The open road still softly calls our little tarraquest globe is the madhouse of those hundred, thousand, millions of worlds. We who cannot even put our own planetary home in order, riven with rivalries and hatreds; are we to venture out into space? By the time we are ready to settle even the nearest other planetary systems, we will have changed. The simple passage of so many generations will have changed us. Necessity will have changed us. We’re an adaptable species. It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri and the other nearby stars, it will be a species very like us, but with more of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses. More confident, far seeing, capable, and prudent. For all our failings, despite our limitations and fallibilities, We Humans are Capable of Greatness. What new wonders undreamt of in our time will we have wrought in another generation and another? How far will our nomadic species have wandered by the end of the next century and the next millennium? Our remote descendants safely arrayed on many worlds through the solar system and beyond, will be unified. By their common heritage, by their regard for their home planet, and by the knowledge that whatever other life may be, the only humans in all the universe, come from Earth. They will gaze up and strain to find the Blue Dot in their skies. They will marvel at how vulnerable the repository of all our potential once was. How perilous our infancy. How humble our beginnings. How many rivers we had to cross before we found our way.” – Carl Sagan

You can't even parody this place. It parodies itself.

[–]saeglopuralifi22 0 points1 point ago

You seriously just made this up for karma. "I'm going for astrophysicist" yeah good luck with that.

[–]andrewcooke -2 points-1 points ago*

another person with a phd in astronomy (and a degree in physics). and an atheist. this is not a smart move. it's not awe-inspiring being an astrophysicist - it's hard, unrewarding, intensely competitive work. even going observing is not like it sounds - you sit in a computer room, so tired your mouth is full of ulcers, eating to stay awake while a computer saves data to disk. you don't look at anything, directly, and often cannot see anything in the data until months or years later. and you become deeply, deeply sceptical of the pretty images and "gee wizz" propaganda that are used because astronomy is public funded. the people telling you how awesome astronomy is are not neutral - they know that "awesomeness" pays their wages. by the end of my second postdoc i felt like i was abusing taxpayers trust.

in contrast, a youth minister can really make a difference to many people's lives.
