It's also really annoying when people assume that the cat being fat is the owner's fault. People have given me lectures about my older cat, who is fat. What they don't know is that we've done several vet-guided diets for months with no changes. Her health has always been fantastic otherwise, she's just fat. And given that she turns 20 years old in a few months, there's little chance of that changing any time soon.

So well-meaning people: ask first, lecture second.

[–]Mcklintock 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here but instead of a cat a dog. I have 3 dogs 2 are well within healthy weight. Darla (the fat dog) and I play ball in the back yard, so it's not like she doesn't get exercise. I told someone lecturing me about her weight "She was fat when I got her and looks like she wants to stay fat" Note: She was a foster dog that was 2 years old and fat when I got her.

Really this is your fault for not running enough electricity through your cat to induce involuntary muscle contractions.

You don't want to spend money only to find out the contraction machine doesn't have enough juice either. Buy an arc welder.

[–]imafunghi 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If a cat eats less calories than it burns off, then it cannot get fat. Fat cannot just form out of thin air. You are overfeeding your cat.

[–]Saganomics 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Stop acting like you know more about my cat's health than I do.

[–]sp0radic 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Apparantly he does. That simple equation is the most basic way to look at a problem with weight. If the cat doesn't consume what it needs + extra, it won't be fat. Get rid of the extra, and a small sliver of what it needs, and it will lose weight until you give it only what it needs.

If it's already old and healthy then this isn't relevant to your cat in particular, but a healthy cat will live longer than an obese one, and you as the pet owner have a direct hand in the health of your pet. Pretending you don't and passing the blame is just negligent.

[–]kuena 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. We own 2 cats, one of which is very fit and the other one is slightly fat(she's a female, yet she weighs about 4 kgs). We've been to the vet several times asking for advices on what to do to help her lose weight. We've tried many different things, changed her diet several times, but nothing helped - she's still chubby and it doesn't look like it's gonna change any time soon. She's very healthy otherwise, very active for a domestic cat. If anything, she's even healthier than the other cat which has some problems with her bowels.

[–]MercurialMadnessMan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Both of my cats are chubby and nothing we have tried has helped. One is active and the other is lazy.

Have you had your cat's thyroid checked?

[–]Saganomics 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's been well over 10 years and I was just a kid then, so I don't really remember. But I think so. We've been to vets and I can't imagine they would overlook a thing like that when trying to help us manage her weight.

[–]tangledlight 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, wait. Last time you had your cat's weight problem checked was 10 years ago?

[–]Saganomics 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Last time we had all the tests run on her. We've run into money trouble since then, but still talked to vets about her problem many times since then.

[–]tangledlight -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry, I don't find this remotely believable. I don't know a single reputable vet that would "talk to vets about her problems" and not continue to recommend bloodwork, since the latest bloodwork is ten years old.

I understand money troubles, but ten years worth? That seems highly irresponsible that you wouldn't keep following up on her health problems. Some might wander in here and go "but the cat is 20 years old, blah blah blah" and you have to think about quality of life vs. quantity and it's easy to anthropomoprhize pets into imagining they're comfortable, but I can't believe that being morbidly obese is comfortable for any creature.

[–]spectralblue 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you don't feed a cat will it remain fat? No, of course not. Now I'm not saying you should stop giving food altogether, but simply reducing the amount of food (+ changing to natural meats instead of regular cat food) and increasing activity is guaranteed to make your cat lose weight.

Also, don't leave food in the bowl all day. You have one feeding session, and if the cat doesn't finish it, take it away.

[–]Saganomics 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've tried everything from raw diets to premium brands and weight control formulas, never leave food in the bowl all day, and have worked with a couple of vets to try to keep her weight down. I'm not completely clueless. But it's just not happening.

She's perfectly healthy otherwise, especially for a 20 year old, and very content with her life. I'm not going to send her to Kitty Auschwitz for an ideal weight that she's never reached and never will reach.

[–]DivineRobot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a big difference between malnutrition and caloric restriction. Being overweight is never a good thing. If you know the maintenance calories, just simply feed 25% less. It works the exact same way in humans.

Being overweight in itself does not kill the animal. It raises the risks of heart diseases and other conditions that could potentially be life threatening. Obviously 20 years is fairly long for a house cat, but why raise unnecessary health risks if you don't have to?

Many studies have shown caloric restriction while maintaining adequate nutrition increases lifespan for humans and animals.

[–]sp0radic -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You control how many calories your cat consumes, and you know how active your cat is. It is your fault.

[–]bassbin 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, this guy thinks people control how active a cat is.

[–]Breakdowns_FTW 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's actually not what they said. While they have a point, it is only to an extent. Some cats just have different metabolisms. Fact of life. I can see how constant lectures on how to "properly" raise one could get frustrating, especially when you are trying to correct weight issues.

[–]imafunghi -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

nope. I don't understand where people get this metabolism thing from. It isn't backed by any science. The fact of the matter is that the owner controls the calorie consumption. If the cat is fed less calories than it burns off, then it cannot get fat. Fat cannot just magically appear out of nowhere

[–]AdrianBrony 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

water retention can contribute quite a lot to the size, and that can happen regardless of calorie intake, as well as a lack of circulation which can make it so that fatty tissue never gets used up in some parts because not very much can get carried away for actual use.

[–]Breakdowns_FTW 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For your pleasure, an extensively well-referenced article on metabolism, and the scientific research and explanations that accompany it. The owner is responsible for the health of the cat, there's no doubting that. Still, there is only so much an owner can do. As we have been told, the user in question has tried a number of diets. None of them worked. The problem is more than just "what I put into the cat, I get out". These little lectures about how the owner is doing a shit job and should feel bad for what they've done are ineffective and rude. Even though they continue to actively search for and try different things, they are not "doing enough" to you. You're doing the cat a great service.

[–]imafunghi -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was referring to your statement of "different metabolisms." There is no scientific evidence for that. That article is about metabolism and does not prove anything you just said. Obviously there is scientific evidence for metabolism. But there is no "fast metabolism" or "slow metabolism."

[–]Breakdowns_FTW 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Considering the abrupt and vague comment you made, it was incredibly easy to interpret it as an assertion that metabolism itself was, to you, a myth that "isn't backed scientifically". You made no further clarification, and despite your continued refutation, there is scientific evidence of different basal rates of metabolism. Granted, this difference is by and large only marginal. The point, though, is that this has much more to do with the cat than what you're letting on. Despite all good intentions and efforts from the owner, some things simply cannot be helped because the problem is internal.

Larger organisms have "faster" metabolisms. They are able to burn more calories per day because of this. Smaller organisms have "slower" metabolisms, and do not burn as much. This is also highly dependent on levels of activity; more active organisms burn more, whereas less active organisms burn much less. If you read on and saw the user's later comments, we can see that a number of different diets have been administered; the calorie control you mentioned prior. It didn't work. The cat is also older, and is likely much less active than it used to be. The result is a fatter cat that doesn't seem to show any progress, despite the quantity of food it is fed. Therefore, it is not the fault of the owner. He's looked into solutions and has tried many. Things can't be helped if the cat is simply not active. There is no reason to continue to blame them, and it needs to stop.

[–]imafunghi -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

intelligent response. However, I remain skeptical. It also possible I am too quick to attack people that blame fatness on a condition. The reason for this is me living in Italy and rarely ever seeing a fat person. I can only remember one person I would consider to be obese in the town I lived in of 30,000 people. Then I move back to the USA and start getting on Reddit, and everyone blames fatness on a "slow metabolism" or some kind of "condition." My point is why don't Italians have these same conditions? Are they somehow designed genetically not to have these conditions Americans have? No. its because in general they eat better and live healthier lifestyles. This is why I am skeptical of people blaming obesity on conditions.

[–]munchybot 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know how active your cat is, but there isn't much you can do about it. Have you ever had a cat?

[–]sp0radic -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, and he's not very active. You can't control their activity, but you can control how much they eat. That's what I was trying to get at. I do have a cat, he got to be overweight, and I decided I love my cat and want him to be around as long as possible and be as healthy as possible, so I am feeding him a calorie restricted diet until he hits a healthy weight. He's losing weight at a slow but steady pace, and I know his health will benefit in the long run.
