mother of god....

you just tapped into some long lost memory i had. was that part of the original MS Plus?

[–]pibroch 8 points9 points ago

I think "Inside Your Computer" was part of 98 Plus!.

The best part is the mix of transistors and vacuum tubes! Plus you can tell whatever it is has power because of the yellow glow... We all know the insides of our computers glow yellow when they are in use.

was that a windows wallpaper? I don't remember it

[–]sgtpppr 3 points4 points ago

It was part of 98 Plus!. They had a number of themes that customized the wallpaper, cursors, colors, screensaver, and sounds.

[–]metaldood19 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. If I remember correctly it was part of a long list of premade themes you could select from that included wallpaper, task at color, and icon skins. Good times.

Wow. I just had a series of nostalgia flashbacks. I suddenly remembered scrolling through different display and sound settings, playing Wipeout and MW2(which came with my video card), oh man...

When MW2 meant MechWarrior, and not Modern Warefare..... Damn I loved that game... the intro alone was worth the price tag.

I got mine free with my Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro... amazing joystick... they don't make games captivate the user the way they used to.

each one sucked a little more than the last.

Did you not play 3? It's easily the best one. It was basically the same game as 2 but better in every way. More in depth simulation-wise by far, being able to aim your guns separate of torso movement was huge. 4 was when they axed a lot of the simulation aspect in favor of faster gameplay, and dumbed down the mech customization.

I still remember reading tons of articles at the time about how it was useless because:

1) The internet was just a fad. Remember, this introduced the internet to the masses.

2) It required a 386 or better, and those were just too damn expensive and overpowered.

3) Who the hell computes with a mouse? A GUI uses up processing power that should be used for actual computing. This thing looks like a computer game, not a workstation!

Man how stupid that sounds in retrospect. I remember saying similar things in Highschool (2000) when we were just starting to reach the 1.0 ghz clock speeds.

I said something along the lines of "Who is ever going to need more than 700mhz? Nobody that isn't in computer animation or CAD!"

12 years later I find myself saying "Ugh, only single core?"

[–]DIGGYRULES 29 points30 points ago

seriously, also i remember how futuristic 1995 sounded and how microsoft made it out to be the best os on the planet ...

[–]collar 40 points41 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really was a big step forward for them (yeah yeah, OS/2 was out beforehand, Amiga love etc., but for the majority of the market, win 95 was where it was at).

So many of the elements we take for granted we just new in win 95, it may have been "Shrug and Pray" back then, but now you do just plug and play. Not needing Trumpet winsock, hardware acceleration in window (remember Doom actually running in windows!, even though you'd still boot directly to DOS for performance), long file names, multitasking that didn't totally suck (but still mostly did).

Put that baby in, play Buddy Holly by Weezer, it's good times. By Win 95 B, it was pretty damn solid for the times too.

[–]raddits 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]patssle 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Never...ever...do an upgrade version of Windows 9x.

[–]CommieCanuck 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why? It was easy as fuck. You didn't even need to have Win 3.1 installed. You could just present your 3.x floppy when asked or if you didn't have the Win 3.x floppies for some reason... You just had to create a Windows folder put a few dummy win.com and win386.exe files and it was good to go.

[–]patssle 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has nothing to do with being easy. System stability - as we all know - Windows 9x had stability problems. Doing upgrades instead of full clean installs was detrimental to stability.

[–]CommieCanuck 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OK I see where you're coming from now. I always did clean installs back in those days because drives were tiny and I had everything backed up on tape.

[–]notjawn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I even have a rule of "Just stick to the OS your computer was shipped/built with unless you're getting a new one/doing a major component overhaul." Can't tell you how many times I got excited over the newest version of windows and jumped the gun to install only to have the machine run like crap.

The only thing I remember about win95 is how many blank CD's i've fucked up while burning them, just because another software had crashed and I wanted to close the process hitting "ctrl-alt-del".

If you don't get this, it's simple, in win95, doing ctrl-alt-del would "freeze" other applications for the entire time the process manager was open. So, hitting ctrl-alt-del while burning a CD = burn software crash.

[–]El_Josho 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

btw why did they change the key in Vista/7 ? It's Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bringt up the Task Manager directly, while it was Ctrl+Alt+Del before. Why do they keep changing stuff that worked before?

[–]BlamesRapMusic 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can hit it with one hand when you do ctrl+shift+esc

[–]GuatemalnGrnade 1 point2 points ago

You can right click on the Taskbar and click on Task Manager, then you can pin it to the bar.

I remember being 8 years old and waking up in the middle of the night (which was actually midnight but for an 8 year old who slept around 9pm it was the middle of the night) to take a piss and my mom and sister were up. When I asked them what they were doing my mom asked me if I wanted to go to Future Shop with her to buy Windows 95. When I woke up the next morning she was up with a pile of 35ish Floppy discs upgrading our old IBM PS/1 from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. The 90s baby.

I was working at CompUSA and had to work during the midnight launch of Windows 95. Total nightmare. I was in the tech department, and we ran a special on upgrading RAM to bring you up to the 4MB RAM requirement. The problem was, 4MB wasn't enough to actually DO anything with Windows 95. So the next day we had a barrage of angry customers yelling at us for having to pay money for something that didn't work. Not to mention all of the people who'd bought off-brand Multimedia kits (so they could get one of those fancy CD-ROM drives and a sound card!) that didn't have '95 drivers. And Plug 'n Play? Another tech department nightmare, since people naturally expected their new peripherals to just work. Not crash their system because the non-PnP compatible device was using an IRQ that was assigned to a PnP device.

People who complain today about how much Windows sucks don't know how good they have it.

If only I could go back in time and warn all those people about Windows ME. They are just so innocent and don't see it coming.

I hated ME, unfortunately it came loaded on a Compaq computer I bought.

When they released XP in New Zealand some stores were giving away free copies. I managed to get 7 copies by driving to obscure stores in rough areas. Some of the stores I was the only person who had come for a free copy.

I remember when Windows 98 came out, June of 97. Best Buy had a promotion for it, where they were selling PCs for 98 bucks, 56k modems for 98 cents, etc. They only had 10 PCs, sale was at midnight that saturday night. I convinced my dad to bring me and my friend over there at 10am, and we were the 7th in line. Waited all day, people tried to buy my spot for 200 bucks, etc. They fed us Mcdonalds and Pizza hut. At midnight, bought my first PC! Good times.

I remember working at the service department of a Computer City during the midnight release offering installs. The sheer number of Compaq owners coming back for help the next afternoon kept us busy for a while. : )

I hadn't thought of those times in a while. Thanks.
