Yeah, reddit is not exactly a very archive friendly site. Things that hit the front page are gone by the next, and if I happened to miss it, chances are, I won't ever see the original again. Reposts allow people who are new or just missed it to see it for the first time. Also, I highly doubt that redditors who saw a post one year ago would remember it clearly on their own. Seeing a great post for the second time (after a month or so) helps bring back the memories and takes all of 5 seconds to hit "back" if you don't care for it.

If everyone on the internet agreed to this and followed it, I would honestly LOVE it.

The problem I see is that when people do post their original content, many times they end up getting little response. Then someone rips their post a month later and ends up on the front page.

There is little motivation for the original poster in situations like these for original posters to continue to contribute when their work is being copied.

If everyone could somehow agree to not use copies, or support them, then I feel your method would work much better.

The first step in absolutely destroying people who repost. Fill the comments with hate, downvote to oblivion, threaten to downvote everything they ever post til the end of time. We have to make people fear reposting more than making spelling errors. Also, convince mods to make reposting forbidden. It is in adviceanimals and you can report people for it.

Because a bunch of stuck up high schoolers think this website owes them something despite it being constantly updated and full of free content. Yeah reposts take less than a second to scroll past, but much better to make sure we let the OP know how disappointed we are with than him/her despite the fact that most of the people that cry repost don't submit shit themselves. They're parasites.

I'm exaggerating with the parasites remark. That's just for dramatics. There is no repost problem though. As gets pointed out in every popular repost:

There are 28 million unique visitors to Reddit. Not all of them have seen everything on this website and not all of them know about or think to use karma decay. Furthermore, it is no more reasonable to assume that everyone will have seen everything on Reddit just because you can search for it anymore than it is to assume that someone would know everything published to Wikipedia. There have been dozens of times when I've seen something "new" on this website that a handful of people complain about being a repost, and the nature of my work allows me to be on this website A LOT. The content of this website is updated CONSTANTLY, and it takes seconds to scroll past something you've seen before or to click the back button. That's why there are image previews. You can even click "view images" at the top of the page and not waste the 2 seconds clicking on the post.

I'm just one person on this website so my opinion on these people means as little as the people that cry repost themselves, especially with new users constantly coming in. However, occasionally going after these people has become something I enjoy doing on Reddit and there have been times when I've even pointed out reposts from someone that complained about reposts, and instead of flipping their shit, they apologized and said they'd think about it in the future. This has happened a few times. I'm not some white knight crusader trying to fix Reddit, but there is no discussion to be had over complaining that you've seen something before. As with any other medium such as TV, a movie, a videogame, or what have you, if you have seen something before that other people are discussing and you feel you can add nothing to the conversation because of that, THEN STAY OUT OF THE CONVERSATION!

What does that post have to do with this post? Ignoring the fact that that post was posted in a subreddit specifically made to complain about things going on in Reddit, if you actually read it instead of just looking for a reason to get back at me you'd see that Reddit celebrity worship is as much a cancer to this website as are the children that cry about every repost they see, and that I specifically said I have nothing against the Reddit "celebrities" themselves, as they're typically just people with recognizable usernames that comment a lot. The people that derail every single thread they post in by commenting on their username and worshipping them/demonizing them instead of commenting on the post itself are trash. If you don't think there's a problem with putting a random user up on a pedestal, you should read this post
