I just read their Wikipedia article. It is pretty awesome. They only have eight employees, the owner taught himself machinery in order to customize the machines, they began with an initial investment of $50,000 in family savings after being turned down by a bank for a $200,000 loan, They grow their own peppers, In 2007 it was estimated to have made US$3.2 million.

Edit: They have 200 employees.

As a non-american, Sriracha sauce is mysterious to me, almost metaphysical. Something you hear about but can never really see, much less taste. I know it only from reddit, the oatmeal and other lost and damned places on the net. Is it that good? I'm afraid I can only be disappointed if I ever try it...

[–]piggnutt 60 points61 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has good flavor, a nice heat level, and it is cheap. I really like the thickness of it too, so it doesn't drain immediately to the bottom of your food.

Most hot sauces sold in the US seem to compliment Mexican or southwestern foods, but I feel this compliments Asian foods best (shocker, right?). I also like how it tastes like chili oil, but you don't have to drown your food in fat to get the flavor & heat.

If you like things with a little kick you'll love it.

On the topic of things we only know because of the internet: Poutine.

I can't express how much I want to taste this awesome mysterious food, hell, even its name is foreign to me. I feel like I am a child who hasn't yet learned to enunciate and is trying to say the word protein.

[–]Skwerley 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can make it from scratch. I know it's hard to find cheese curds here, but heat up some milk, add some vinegar, strain to cheese cloth and squeeze, let it drain, and VOILA, you have curds of cheese, to then be applied to french fries covered in gravy.

[–]Solomaxwell6 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Check menus at diners and bars. Sometimes they'll have it under a different name. There's something I see a lot called "disco fries" that's usually french fries and gravy, but sometimes it'll have the cheese curds.

[–]burning5ensation 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I worked as a cook at semi-pro hockey rink in Atlanta and poutine was a staple. The only time I've ever seen a Canadian be rude was when we ran out of curd...complete dick, but he did apologize afterwards.

[–]flipswitch 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sriracha I understand, if it's hard to come by locally you're probably not going to be able to try it. But poutine is just french fries, cheese curds and gravy. These are all things that should be easy to make/get yourself.

[–]GeneralWarts 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I, had a dream, that I made them on my own. For I live in Wisconsin, a land filled with the squeakiest of cheese curds. But I was afraid my creation would lack any resemblance or authenticity with the original. Maybe I'll go back to my quest for homemade Wisconsin poutine.

You've given me the courage.

True story, I think I broke my spicy food processor. I love hot food, and keep multiple bottles of Cock Sauce around. One day, I went to an Indian restaurant, and ordered chicken curry. I decided to try "Indian hot". I have never felt closer to death. I was shakey, sweating, chilled, and sore all over. Felt fine the next day. However, now, whenever I eat anything spicier than Taco Bell, I get chills, a headache, the spice tastes very different, and much much stronger. :-(

[–]IceBlue 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What makes it a "Thai" hot sauce specifically? Growing up in LA I saw it more in Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants than Thai restaurants. I always assumed it was Vietnamese.

[–]missachlys 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sriracha sauce itself is Thai. This brand just happens to be labeled in Vietnamese.

Besides that, it's a very common addition to pho, and most all Vietnamese restaurants sell pho.

[–]higherlogic 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because that's where it was invented:

"Sriracha is a type of Thai hot sauce, named after the coastal city of Si Racha, in the Chonburi Province of central Thailand [...]"

Other companies make sriacha sauce, but the one in the picture dominates the US market.

[–]IceBlue 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't call it completely American. The company that makes the version we buy in the US is from the US, but the sauce wasn't invented in the US. Saying it's completely American is like saying sushi sold in the US is completely American since it's made here.

[–]WiseCynic 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, the first time I'd ever seen or tried the stuff was years ago at a little Vietnamese place and the bottles didn't have any English writing on them at all so we always called it cock sauce cause of the rooster.

Very popular in Mexico. If you like Valentina, try some of this (it's cheap too!) . . .

A squirt of this into hot chicken stock and a squeeze of lime = instant Tom Yum soup base.

I just like it cause it's the only hot sause that doesn't inflict rightious-fire butthurt.

I've had Sriracha around the house for as long as I can remember. Problem is, it used to be so much spicier and fresher! The kind of thing that would make my ears burn and my face sweat. The stuff I find in all the stores now is like a slightly improved version of ketchup. It doesn't excite me the way it used to. I feel as if I'll never experience cock sauce the same way as I did growing up. Nostalgia can be harsh, but they say time heals all wounds...

I always keep my fridge stocked with this. It's pretty much a chili paste with about the same consistency as ketchup. I use this on scrambled eggs, fajitas, packets of noodles, etc.

I also make a hot wing sauce with sriracha, cholula habanero sauce and butter. Soooo good!

This is available in a lot of places in Canada. I always forget what it's called, I just refer to it as "Cock-Sauce". I'm the only one who thinks it's funny though...

edit: and sometimes I call it "Hot Cock-Sauce" if I'm feeling particularly crude

[–]SirRosie 5 points6 points ago

I knew it as cock-sauce for over a year before I made a point of learning its name so I could tell people to try it.

[–]auronvi 4 points5 points ago

People I know call it "Rooster Sauce"

I think I am the only person who says it by name. Sriracha!

Back when I was a broke freshman in college (97) we used to make Srirach-dogs. Basically a hot dog bun loaded to the gills with this stuff.

The idea being that by the time you finished it, you weren't thinking about your hunger anymore so much as trying to quell the flames of hellfire that was once your mouth.

Only the brand is American. Siracha IS a Thai condiment, though slightly different in flavor than Huy Fongs.

Fantastic.

this is by far my favorite hot sauce, always have to have a bottle at home.

my friends and i have always called it "cock sauce" because of the rooster on the front... we need to make this the unofficial name of this sauce!

[–]BalalaikaBoi 0 points1 point ago

One thing you can't get anywhere (not even at Costco) in Korea. I always suspected the absence of importation could be due to fear of it being much more flavorful and spicier than your traditional Korean hot sauces. Korea has a lot of national pride.

[–]juniorkickstart 0 points1 point ago

I'm a massive Sriracha nut, but, on a similar topic - if Blair's hot sauces are available in your area and you want something good to put on a sandwich or whatever and don't want anything insanely hot (like many of their sauces...) try the Sweet Death Sauce. It's outrageously good.

This version is better. Too bad you can only get it in europe.
