Must have been really difficult looking up all those words in a Words With Friends dictionary.

[–]FTFM 110 points111 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a site that gives you the perfect word every time, seems like 5% of players I encounter use it, straight 7 tiles played every other round with zero strategy of placement. I do learn new words while playing them though.

But if that's the same board, then why does the OP's photo show a score of 1469 for the play when the website shows 1472?

EDIT: I see. In the link, concept had already been played. In the picture, it's much less obvious of a play.

[–]erikbra81 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I bet any competitive scrabble player beats the crap out of that algorithm. Strategy of placement is half the game.

[–]TheRealmsOfGold 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I roomed with a national Scrabble champion once, and hearing him talk about it, I wouldn't be surprised if this were true. But he had also practically memorized the dictionary.

[–]erikbra81 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I played some 7000 games online over 6 years and I tried to play one of those bots once. It didn't more than match me. And there are plenty of good players out there that regularly beat the crap out of me.

[–]FreeBribes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Totally true... knowing all your two and three letter words, and being able to make "parallel" words can really do wonders. You get every bonus twice when you do that.

[–]Kombat_Wombat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it was an xkcd that I learned this from, but there are a bunch of games that a computer has solved, or at least it can give you the best move. Tic-Tac-Toe, checkers, and scrabble are some of those games. The computer can beat the best human opponents almost every single time.

[–]dampew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I saw something on TV once where a computer would calculate the players' odds of winning, based on what had been played, what was in their hands, and what was left in the bag. It would also calculate their odds of winning for playing different words, and it wasn't always the highest scoring words that gave the best play. I definitely wonder how hard it is to beat certain algorithms though.

[–]HighSalinity 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They would have to do best of 5 or something. Since placement is half the game, and this app ignores that, it's very easy to mess up your opponent by playing in random spaces. I once played a competitive chess player on a ski trip. Now, mind you, I'm DECENT at best. I was randomly throwing away pieces, just being silly. He let his guard down and I took his queen in my randomness blitzkrieg. That wasn't skill on my part, just dumb luck. Same concept.

[–]oldmoneey 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's an app that gives you the perfect word every time.

[–]thotk 10 points11 points ago

[–]ShiryouCross 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A guy I play with uses that app. I called him out on it when he played the word "joual." I mean, seriously, this is a guy that spells "tub," t-u-b-e. I wish I was exaggerating, because he is also my boss.

[–]TripperDay 2 points3 points ago

I had a guy use "lurdan" once.

[–]brohebus 1 point2 points ago

[–]FTFM 67 points68 points ago

People are fleeing WWF everyday, it's mostly MMA that is stealing all the fans, but real fans will always feel the nostalgia of a Hulk Hogan-esque look given by one of the core wrestlers.

[–]Switche 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A friend of mine played a ridiculous word first turn on the first game I ever played. I just couldn't catch up despite my excellent plays, she always had better ones.

I go hang out with her a week later and check out her new kindle fire, and right on the screen was one of those cheat sites, and WWF was opened.

I decided not to say anything, but I never played WWF again. It's not fun enough, and I don't even want to try if I ever have to wonder if people are cheating. It's not that I have to win, but I don't want to play someone's fake ego in what is basically a single player game.

[–]SOMETHING_POTATO 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never played words with friends, but I like Scrabble. There are a bunch of scrabble solver sites, and I can often beat them because even the best ones only consider 1)biggest point value and 2)value of letters remaining in the rack. You can often play to cock-block the computer.

[–]FTFM 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is these players are not computers, and they get a list they can easily scroll through for every combination from highest to lowest point values, I've beaten one obvious cheater ever out of probably 20 cheaters in 400ish games. Having this solver + a very small amount of strategy is near impossible to beat even for a very seasoned player.

[–]meh100 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

perfect word every time

Surely you mean the word that nets the highest number of points, not the word that is necessarily the best word to play? Or does the program consider things like the likelihood of your opponent reaching a triple word score tile on his turn because of where you placed a word? Somehow, I doubt it.

[–]RouseHouse1013 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I played a girl that did that, and the first time I beat her, I stopped playing her and retired at the top. Felt good to beat a computer.

[–]paholg 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

WTF game is that and why does it have all those triple word scores and such right in a line?

[–]bexamous 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's Wordfeud, which IMO is better than Words With Friends. One option is having a random board, which sometimes ends up with multiple doubles/triples in a line. Its usually not a problem as it just common sense to not set your opponent up to use them, but if if they're near the center sometimes the game is ruined right away. In any case, overall random board is more fun to play.

[–]Tiffana 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks like Wordfeud with random multiplier placement. This can be chosen when you start the game, but is pretty lame lol.

[–]bananapants919 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, thats definitely not Words with Friends. It isn't really even that impressive once you see that the score was multiplied god knows how many times.

[–]laughingwithu 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always try to create two words particularly by saving my s's, always jump on TW's and TL's and try to get a place where I can use quiz (its the most points I have ever got in WWF).

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dee?s=t

Dee is a niche technical term and ae is probably archaic. Ana just seems obscure. I'm assuming "ami" counts because "mon ami" is a semi-common thing for English speakers to say.

how do you play 7 letters and then have 2 letters left? Photoshop

[–]Axxl 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well since the bottom left says 0 letters remaining, this means it's at the end of the game and letters aren't left in the "bag" to pull out after playing. So he used all 7 letters, and got the final 2 letters in the game.

Objection! It shows seven tiles were used to make the word and yet only five tiles are missing from his personal stash.

[–]FTFM 4 points5 points ago

Computers are pretty good at conceptualizing, and a computer made this play. Lignites? get real!

[–]Draaaan 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or he saw the possibility, put it there, then hit submit and prayed?

Or am I the only one that throws down multiple random arrangements of letters hoping there's a word available every time I have a chance at a triple? "Zarf" is my favorite result of that so far.

There's just too many monster words for this to be legit, it's possible this was just collusion by two people setting this up together, which is totally easy to do since you can pass in tiles til you get perfect ones. But it's much more likely the cheat site. And yeah everyone tries words all day long, even great players I play all the time get new words in this game, but I would really like a version of the game where you couldn't "try out" words and had to be sure when you played a word or you lost your turn, that would make for a great version for legit players.

Edit: Actually both names start with man, and a shitload of the letters hit bonuses, I think it's one guy playing himself now.

[–]partanimal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On Lexulous if you play "challenge" mode the dictionary is unavailable and it won't tell you if a word is invalid. If your player challenges you, and it is invalid, they get your points. If they don't challenge you, then you keep the word.

Lignites is actually one of the more common words that he got with this one, imo. Especially since Coal is such a common source of electricity that I was taught it in 7th grade.

This wouldn't be too hard to set up intentionally if you were willing to play the game enough times "against" a partner.

It's clearly fake... nobody capable of this play would leave two TW, two TL, and a DW open on the same line.

[–]need_scare 0 points1 point ago

I checked in the Oxford English Dictionary the meanings of some of the less-familiar words. Here are the results:

  • hadj — a pilgrimage to Mecca (also "hajj" or "haj")
  • ana - used in archaic recipes, it means "an equal quantity or number" "In the same weight prudence and innocence take, ana of each does the just mixture make" from 1667.
  • crowdy - a scottish word for porridge. now obsolete according to OED.
  • trad - a colloquial abbreviation for traditional jazz. from 1973: "The French like good trad and this was real old stuff out of old Chicago. It was black men's music".
  • dee - the name of the letter D
  • wop - an Italian (offensive); also there's an obsolete definition for a radioman ("wireless operator").
  • et - an extraterrestrial being
  • ho - this has a bunch of old and obsolete definitions, as well as being contemporary slang. What gets it in the WWF dictionary is probably its meaning as an exclamation, found in Shakespeare and Tennyson.
  • upraised - an adjective meaning "raised"
  • ae - i'm not sure why this is in WWF. The only meaning I could find is a photographer's abbreviation, for "auto-exposure".
  • peise - obsolete scottish word meaning "to weigh"
  • lignites - lignite is a variety of coal. It doesn't make a lot of sense in the plural, kind of like saying "obsidians" or "granites" but it's still a word, I guess.
  • es - I thought I would get "the name of the letter S" but apparently that's "ess". "Es" is an obsolete word for carrion.
  • ami - another obsolete word … it means friend or lover.
  • joggled - to joggle something is "to shake [it] to and fro, as by repeated jerks; to cause [it] to move from side to side."
  • itemed - to set down or reckon up item by item — "A process which looked less heroic when item'd in the bill next day" from 1855.
  • mon - a Japanese family crest or badge, frequently used in decorative art
  • bi - I thought I would find other meanings besides "bisexual" but I didn't.
  • hil - a spelling of "hill" from the 16th century.

In conclusion, you shouldn't feel bad about not knowing these words because many of them are obsolete, or very technical.
