All of the opening scenes with Jumba Jookiba's trial were purposefully done in cold colors so that the switch to the warm colors and tropical fish of Hawaii would be more striking. Also the hula dancers in the beginning were not rotoscoped (traced from film), but were instead each hand-drawn, which is pretty impressive considering the quality of the animation.

Also, stitch was originally conceptualized in the eighties, and looked quite a bit different than he did in the film. In the original concept, he was a violent alien who was stranded in the wilderness of earth and learned to imitate the noises he heard in nature, and through that found peace. It was going to be a children's book.

How do you feel about this work in particular? I think it would be a lot more interesting without the gold bottle at the foot of the tree. I feel like it's unnecessary. The piece is already about something else (a tree shaped like people fucking each other), which is a strong image by itself. The bottle seems like an afterthought; if anything it cheapens the piece.

I do like the AstroTurf pedal stall, however. I think that is an interesting choice.

I think this one's pretty cool, but I didn't notice the bottle at first. It does seem sort of unrelated to the rest of the piece. The closest I could get to relating it is as a reference to Apollo and Daphne (Apollo, wounded by the golden dart pursued Daphne who was then transformed into a tree), but that's really stretching it. I think the image is really well-done, but I really like the message that I get out of it: that sex is natural and nature is sex. I'm tired of all the crazy stigma around sex in our culture. It's crazy. People should worry about more worthwhile things.

I also love that the image is only revealed when viewing the sculpture at a certain angle. Really neat. I can read into it a bit, and I like that.
