i believe this is officially the 1,000,000th time i've seen this posted!

congratulations! You won an Ipad!

Okay... This is hilarious.

Why did you click the link 999,999 more times

OCD

[–]quadrapod 1 point2 points ago

I personally would just use an Explosively formed penetrator for any actual assassination attempt on a high profile individual like this. That three inch laminate would be like tissue paper.

Here's some EFP slow motion porn

[–]Inky_musty 0 points1 point ago

Where are you going to get your hands on something like that?

[–]quadrapod 0 points1 point ago

A concave copper plate could be hand forged, and high explosive is not as hard a thing to get a hold of as it likely should be.

[–]ItscalledCannabis -5 points-4 points ago

/r/atheism proving that fact is much more stranger than fiction

[–]thegrim99 32 points33 points ago

This might get down voted to hell, but the previous Pope was shot while traveling. Of course it was possibly KGP agents, but whatever..

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_paul_2

[–]Craigellachie 15 points16 points ago

This also might put you down but he forgave his attacker as well. Real bad example that pope was.

[–]expandingmess 8 points9 points ago

the pope is also a politically charged entity, forgiveness is in the rules of what he preaches. he would have been a massive hypocrite if he hadnt forgiven the shooter.

Since when did jews kill jesus? You're reading a different book than I am.

[–]TrebeksUpperLIp 2 points3 points ago

The Sanhedrin sort of forced Pontius Pilate's hand in having him executed. Goes the story.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

and then when Pilate wanted to free Jesus and Kill Barnabas (seeing Jesus just as being another illuminated, nothing too dangerous), the Sanhedrin sent a few men in the crowd to motivate them to vote to free Barnabas... lol

[–]ahlaenxna 1 point2 points ago

Actually, for much of Europe's history, anti-semitic feelings were popular; jewish populations all across the continent were discriminated against and forced into poverty. When Hitler took it to the extreme he did, hatred of Jewish people fell out of fashion.

[–]mindembiggener 27 points28 points ago

Well, if the pope got shot it would be "God's will." Who is he to question God's will? I think that is the point here, not whether it is reasonable for one of the most famous and controversial people in the world to ride in a bulletproof-glass car.

[–]GrelodTheKind 32 points33 points ago

Maybe it's God's will that he ride in a bulletproof car. Checkmate, Atheists.

[–]martymcflyer 11 points12 points ago

And on the 7th day god decreed Pope though shall travel in bullet proof cars!

[–]FreeGiraffeRides 3 points4 points ago

If God is pulling the strings, every abortion is God's will

[–]WonkaKnowsBest 2 points3 points ago

what if it was God's will that the guy was supposed to make this for the pope?

[–]CakeSmasher 5 points6 points ago

Accoridng to Christians, God's will is unstoppable. All the bulletproof glass in the world wouldn't help, God will find a way.

So why waste money on it them, Mr. pope?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

You're asking a guy who lives in the biggest art collection in the world, sleeping in a golden bed and sitting on a golden throne about why he's wasting money?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It was God's will for them to buy the bulletproof glass?

There is no point in applying rationality to religion...

[–]NolanRoss 1 point2 points ago

It's kinda like when kids play war.

I have armor

Well I have special bullets

Well you missed anyways

No I didn't I hit you

[–]abenton 0 points1 point ago

Gods will at work. Why is this pope trying to impede?

[–]landob 24 points25 points ago

I share an atheistic view religously these days, but I was always taught that you put faith in the lord, but not foolish faith. Don't walk out over a cliff and expect god to catch you. Same here, he knows people would love to kill him so take steps and protect yourself. Just like an average every day christian white woman dont take a detour thru compton california on foot at 2am.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Yeah but this is the fuckin' pope. You'd think he'd have a bit more favoritism on such things.

[–]President_Cow 1 point2 points ago

Free will means humans can still murder each other, even if the victim is faithful.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I guess, if God wants to let the Pope die every time they go out in public...

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

The definition 'foolish faith' seems a tad redundant.

[–]acolossalbear 0 points1 point ago

What a brave statement in a place like this.

[–]Kgbeast1 -2 points-1 points ago

If you don't like it, then why are you here?

[–]stevospc 1 point2 points ago

Faith in the lord, not faith in humanity. Humanity is fucking crazy.

[–]Phage0070 -1 points0 points ago

So put your faith in the lord unless it really matters. Super.

[–]Rhakan -3 points-2 points ago

Exactly. Even as ridiculous as religion is, arguments like "if the pope actually believed in God then he wouldn't take any steps to stop someone from killing him" are straw man arguments of the most obvious kind.

I find it quite silly that we need to stoop to this level of poor logic in order to make fun of religion given that it almost makes fun of itself.

[–]needs_a_username 6 points7 points ago

[–]iesvs 3 points4 points ago

Not quite Bill Hicks verbatim, but close enough.

[–]Rawtashk 4 points5 points ago

People in the world have free choice, it's up to you to protect yourself from them.

I can ride a unicycle while blindfolded over a tightrope suspended over an alligator pit.....but it doesn't mean it's a very good idea.

[–]FreeGiraffeRides 0 points1 point ago

A lot of christians believe that while still somehow simultaneously believing that it's god's will when something happens to them as a result of other human actors.

[–][deleted] ago*

[deleted]

[–]Jess_than_three 4 points5 points ago

I don't think that Christians think that. I do think that a lot of Christians think that whatever happens in the world is "God's will", which confuses me because, as has been pointed out elsewhere in the thread, if the Pope were to get shot, that would obviously be part of the divine plan. (See also medicine and even prayer as attempts to subvert said divine plan.)

[–]dler32 4 points5 points ago

If the religious are so quick as to say that Christopher Hitchens' death was god's will, and that Osama's death was god's will, then we can make the assumption that the religious believe that human lives are in gods hands, in which case, surely his most highly regarded representative would be protected by "god's will", hence the seemingly redundant need for an armored, bulletproof vehicle.

If god does not promise physical safety, but at the same time promotes the physical harm of non believers, that is a truly petty and unworthy god to worship.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dler32 2 points3 points ago

If some lives are in God's hands, then we can assume all of them are, unless God doesn't agree that all men are equal, which Galatians 3:28 clearly says he does.

Quoted for the lazy: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus"

So does God go further to differentiate between us? No he does not.

"For there is no partiality with God" (Romans 2:11).

So my argument from assumption, to intermediate conclusion, to conclusion stands supported and logical. The only fallacy lies within the assumption itself, that our lives are in the hands of God.

But that was never an assumption I made on my own (obviously, as a non believer), but rather an assumption made by many religious people the world over, when they believe that the deaths of those they dislike are acts of God.

[–]venkmanman 11 points12 points ago

The atheists of r/atheism have a very childlike view of Christianity.

I suspect most of them are very young.

[–]Tm0 5 points6 points ago

Polls were taken, the average age was like 21+

[–]Username20x6 0 points1 point ago

Ya, I took a poll on a porn site, it said 100% of the users were 18+

[–]HATES_BLIND_HATERS 2 points3 points ago

I have you tagged as "Doesn't know what theories are". Interesting...

[–]venkmanman -4 points-3 points ago

And I have you tagged as "Typical atheist spouting nonsense".

[–]gribbly 1 point2 points ago

The atheists of r/atheism

...are not a monolithic group

[–]EdinMiami 2 points3 points ago

Isn't it so much more fun now that you can come here and say what you like but /r/christianity complained and got the mods to force civility in your own subreddit. Now compare your own cowardice to the Pope.

The irony just keeps on rolling.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

How do you know he was from /r/christianity? I'm from /r/atheism, and I still think half of these people don't really understand what they're bashing and just bash to be bashful (not sure if it's the correct usage of bashful, but I had to keep going).

[–]EdinMiami 0 points1 point ago

bash to bash (bashful is shy)

edit: if you (specifically you) don't like my use of the word "you" then assume I meant you in the general sense of the word and not specifically you in relation to venkmanman

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

Thanks for the info.

[–]Buscat 2 points3 points ago

you do hear them say that "everything is part of god's plan" pretty often, but you're right. They never consider it god's plan that they would get hurt.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Harnellas 1 point2 points ago

Precautionary measures seem to be quite the opposite of my understanding of the term faith. I admit to a bias however, as any expenditure by the catholic church on this useless symbol of a man strikes me as blatantly hypocritical.

[–]konakona24 0 points1 point ago

Are you implying that God would not protect his chosen representitive to mankind? That seems a little ignorant.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dler32 3 points4 points ago

Of course not. His intention was for Christ to die. The only reason he sent Jesus Christ down to Earth was to die for the sins of mankind. Why would he protect him? Jesus Christ was little more than a messenger and a pig raised for slaughter.

For a God who can create the universe and everything within it with his almighty supernatural powers, a sadistic and pathetic God he must be indeed to formulate a method so horrific for removing/forgiving sin from the world, when it should've taken little more than his own wishful thinking.

[–]Riceater 2 points3 points ago

Compound that with the thought that he created a practically endless universe, that we'll probably never get to see/visit most of, all for one species on one tiny planet with the sole purpose of worshiping him for eternity and if we don't he sends us to a place to be burned and tortured forever (aka no end).

If this is the reality I was born into, I wish I was never born...

[–]EdinMiami -1 points0 points ago

Who is saying that god protects his followers from physical safety?

The point is that the Pope is scared for his life. Why? Didn't Christ die as a martyr? Death is nothing more than an earthly consideration. Why does he fear it? Is it god's will that he insulate himself from the people? Is it his will that his voice on earth must hide behind glass?

Those are rhetorical, blinders are blinders.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Crrack 1 point2 points ago

Well in this hypothetical, God has chosen to give the Pope cancer so who is he to decide that God was wrong for doing so. What makes him smarter then the all mighty.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Crrack 2 points3 points ago

No, that's you putting words in other peoples mouths like you've done all over this page.

If you truly believe God has a divine plan than you wouldn't need to concern yourself with modern medicine.

A "reasoned" conversation with a Christian is impossible because the very premise of Christianity is... unreasonable.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Crrack 2 points3 points ago

Of course it's relevant.

God has dished out these diseases/illnesses for a reason (if he has a plan). By curing them, you are going against his plan.

We can go back and forth all day, but in the end you just can't put rational thinking and reason behind an argument for Christianity.

[–]EdinMiami 0 points1 point ago

Nice deflection. Continue to look straight ahead.

[–]FirstRyder -2 points-1 points ago

In the form of a bullet-proof shield? No. But through the power of faith and prayer? Yep.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]FirstRyder -1 points0 points ago

Yes, it's amazing how there are contradictions in the christian outlook. What's your point? Are you suggesting that Christians as a whole don't believe that faith and prayer have power?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Crrack 1 point2 points ago

You have missed the point of the meme entirely.

Plus there's plenty of reason to impute an immature belief system on to the Pope. The entire belief is immature and it would be naive to think otherwise.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]ImposterProfessorOak 3 points4 points ago

Psalms 121:7 The LORD will keep you from all harm--he will watch over your life;

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]ImposterProfessorOak 1 point2 points ago

probably not, if we apply this logic to the rest of the bible something interesting happens...

[–]FirstRyder 2 points3 points ago

The Pope, who was conscious until going into surgery, suspected that he would live, thanks to what he earnestly believed to be the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Fatima.

(From the wikipedia page, and a story I've heard elsewhere.)

Now tell me again that it isn't part of the catholic belief system that the pope (not necessarily uniquely) receives supernatural protection.

[–]TheChurchOfSagan 8 points9 points ago

Don't wear a condom, if your supposed to get pregnant it's God's will....but surround yourself in bulletproof glass because an all powerful being cant stop a murderer

[–]Leaningthemoon -1 points0 points ago

Don't wear a condom because baptisms are expensive and we need the money. . . . . . . . and a place to put our wieners

[–]MadLintElf 2 points3 points ago

The pope being killed while promoting gods words wold be a guaranteed first class ticket to heaven if you ask me. You'd think, if he really believed in such a place, he'd be happy as hell to be sent there.

[–]HaydukelivesAZ 2 points3 points ago

The glass isn't to protect the pope, it protects any young boys he might come apon while out and about.

EDIT: Freudian slip, misspelled a word.

[–]danleeks 1 point2 points ago

I wish these pictures included the 20 secret service looking dudes that run alongside the vehicle. It pretty much screams "well you don't expect god to protect me, do you?

[–]YourFaceSucks 1 point2 points ago

Boring

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Maybe he's afraid of God's retribution for his blasphemy.

[–]kaisermatias 1 point2 points ago

That photo cuts out the swarms of bodyguards running along the Popemobile. And the cops lining the roads keeping people away.

True believer, that Pope is

[–]Ariomon 1 point2 points ago

I brought up this point with my agnostic dad and he trolled me good. His reasoning for it was that it was to prevent someone committing the sin of murder.

[–]learnebonics 0 points1 point ago

Also ironic considering...

[–]iLoginToComment 0 points1 point ago

Whenever I see this I always think......RPG?

[–]lipsheutz 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if the driver ever wants to break suddenly while the pope goes flying into the glass. What a great mental image.

As Penn Jillette says, we're all atheist. If you wear a seatbelt, you don't believe in God; if you look both ways before crossing the street, you don't believe in God; if you wash your hands, you don't believe in God.

[–]forcedtolie 0 points1 point ago

It's bullet proof, but let's see him fare against Thor's hammer.

[–]lolzmaster69 0 points1 point ago

a religious argument would be that God gave humans free will, so they could kill the pope if they so desired

The car and glass was a gift of God, therefore God is protecting him!

It's stupid, but I guess that is one way the Catholics can defend the use of the car.

[–]Kerrt -1 points0 points ago

The Jesuit/CFR press should report the religion of both the offender and the victim that we may be given a fuller understanding of undeniable, criminal dominance among certain religions—Romanism, Atheism and Islam.

“This avowal of UNIVERSAL SOVEREIGNTY perfectly corresponds with the History of the Jesuits in all ages.—Their real standard is ATHEISM, and they only employ Popery as a Stepping-stone to the attainment of this end.”

John Spurgeon, Anti-Tractarian Tracts, “The Principles of the Jesuits.”, Second Series, Number 11, (Norwich, England: C. Muskett, No date; mid-1800s), p. 3.

I just thought of something, maybe not all the popes actually believe in god, they just like the idea of them being the voice of someone's god or something like that, I don't really know what the pope does other than be an old man with a lot of power
