This has already happened. When my son was 8 I explained to him life before the Internet, and having to do all research with books in the library. He was flabbergasted. That was 10 years ago.

Also we had to get up and change the channel, of which there were only three and a half.

EDIT: Re-worded, as people were misreading the post.

You have to tell him that when he is 18? I am 20 and life without the internet was.. actually pretty cool.

Libraries was the shit. Mostly because it was all about finding waldo/wally.

I have a question for you old-timer; did most people actually own encyclopedias in your day? This is a real question, I'm curious if most people could actually look things up, if they wanted to.

[–]jersully 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Encyclopedias are expensive, so most people didn't own a set in their own home.

[–]PoopyMcfartface 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, that's what I figured, and they take up quite a bit of space.

[–]ubna 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Remember back in the day before the google, you'd talk with your friends and bring up a topic of discussion and they would feed you a ton of bullshit.

But you had no idea they were incorrect, and no way to validate it, so you just accepted what they said because they were your friends and you trusted them.

And then years later you may repeat the information and find out your whole base of knowledge you walked around with in your head was skewed with common myths, misconceptions or flat out wrong information.

I'm mostly talking about pop-culture, interesting facts or figures and general blather you'd yap about at the pub.

Before google I had no idea Alanis Morissette went down on Joey Gladstone in a movie theatre which was referenced in her song "You Oughta Know".

I have an ex-girlfriend that would call me Mr. Google, because I would of course hop on Google if I had a question about something, or was wondering about something. I never understood the negative connotation of the title (And she did mean it in a slightly negative way). I guess some people are perfectly fine thinking, "Hey, I wonder about ...? Eh, I guess the feeling will pass."

While true, there was one thing that was nice about the pre-internet days: getting access to information was more social.

If you had a question about who starred in what movie, you'd think, "Oh, my friend Bob loves movies. I wonder if he knows." And you might call him up on the phone or make a point to ask him next time you saw him. Maybe he'd end up joining the discussion you were having with your other friend that led to the question in the first place. It was a good way to get to know people and learn about what they were interested in.

Nowadays, that conversation just won't happen, and instead you'll just be vaguely aware that Bob likes movies and not really sure of the details beyond that. Or not as much.

[–]PeeSherman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not true at all. People would go to the fucking library and read these things called books if they were interested in something. These book things were generally written by people called "scholars" and are reputed to be a proficient base of knowledge on whatever subject they wrote that book on.

Nowadays, people read a title and maybe the first paragraph of some article on some website, validated only by the vox populi, and think that they are suddenly an expert on the subject.

[–]Vasistas 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you. Really, thank you. Google is a great starting point, but the vast majority of knowledge is still not on the internet but in books... oh the TIL threads on reddit that could be prevented by people realizing this.

Despite the fact that this has been around for a long time, this is hand down one of my favorite images on the internet.

When I try to explain to people why I am so infatuated with the power of the internet, this is the first thing I show them. We have the ability to learn about anything our minds can possibly think of, and I think a lot of people take this for granted.

The world is truly an amazing place.

[–]mvw2 0 points1 point ago

Pre-internet, that's pretty much true. That's when you went to college and the library, but even then knowledge was slow and arduous, not to mention highly constrained in the sense that you learned a small scope of things. The internet created instant access for everything. The breadth and speed is simply ridiculous. The pace of learning and comprehension is almost unfathomable versus 20 years ago just because you can collect and piece together the data so rapidly.

[–]Vasistas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depth of learning however... not so breathtaking.

[–]EddyMac 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]mvw2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That depends. Depth is up to the individual, often based on need or desire. It's not like the information isn't there to expand more upon a single idea. It's more a matter of necessity and interest and that varies per individual.

[–]Vasistas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's kind of my point, the information is not there. It's one of the dangers of google, making you forget the sheer amount of knowledge not on the internet.

[–]mvw2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see it differently. I feel a LOT of information is there, readily available. I think the usability of it really comes down to the research skills of the individual.

I do believe there's an extremely high percentage of low level information, very basic stuff, some right, some incorrect which creates its own challenge. However, the depth does exist for many things and at the very least you will be pointed to specific resources (books, journals, newspaper articles, etc) that do offer that depth. All of this is part of the researching process though.

The kind of thing the internet offers is that I can ask someone, say a 12 year old kid who's barely picked up a science book, and I can ask him to do some research online and tell me how a nuclear reactor works. He can come back to me the next day and tell me in rather good detail the specifics of the nuclear reaction, how the plant is set up, and how it operates on a basic level. I could ask him to do more research and go into detail on the actual nuclear reaction and explain the process on an atomic level, and he could come back the next day and tell me the nuclear reaction in good deal including the atoms involves, the radiation emitted, and even the proof of e=mc2. Realistically this can go on many more times, and we could go into vast detail. I will agree much of what's on the internet is base level stuff, but a LOT is there. The rest comes from going to your local library or other resources and gathering the finer details to really build a solid knowledge base. The internet is really a huge knowledge base though.

[–]Vasistas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, no disagreement there. Still, I've spent a lot of time at university though being frustrated with fellow students who thought that if they could not find certain things on the internet they did not exist. "What do you mean there are a dozen more sources?"... generally a quick look at the online catalogue of the library would have helped, but if it wasn't on page one of the google results they'd never ever find it. I see the same at work and with friends now – you will get results by typing questions into google, but you'll get better results if you know how to formulate your query for a search engine and also check out catalogues of libraries and archives. It's a sad mixture of more available information with fewer people able to use it, as if there is a new aspect to literacy and the vast majority of users happen to be illiterate.

What this was like is so hard to convey today.

But it's also hard to convey how before the internet it was possible to think about shit for a long, long time. Like a really long time, like years where a single idea would simmer in your mind and build up strange little concretions from your everyday experience and you'd never come across anything even remotely related to it because even vaguely similar ideas were trapped in books you didn't happen to read, and so the idea was yours alone and it grew in glorious, weird uniquitude like a tumor you kept as a pet, and which nobody else would understand or care about but which gave you some special distance from the rest of the world.

These days, you get an idea like that and google it and find that it was on somebody's tumblr and linked to reddit in 2008 and you sigh and refresh the home page.
