I particularly like the "games" that look like they were made in MS paint.

[–]puntloos 15 points16 points ago

Protip: install it in vmware.

I got stuck in bing maps for a long time until I figured out I had to hit the windows key. <facepalm/>

[–]Phalex 4 points5 points ago

Or virtualbox, since you need workstation 8. Which I am not paying for.

[–]lordsidious 2 points3 points ago

Who pays for things anymore?

[–]beder 0 points1 point ago

companies, mostly... and only ones that think they might get caught

[–]timdh 2 points3 points ago

Works fine in the free VMWare Player.

[–]coolcool23 0 points1 point ago

Well, to be honest it's just fine enough... it's acted pretty strange for me a few times, but since it's an unsupported operating system in VMWare Player, I guess it's good enough.

[–]puntloos 1 point2 points ago

But how will you ever know if it's vmware or windows that fails ;)

[–]2gig 1 point2 points ago

Don't worry, nobody's paying for anything.

[–]Kurtsey 25 points26 points ago

Friend of mine installed it a few days ago, sent me a screen shot of his "desktop" Looks like a windows phone after a shit storm.

[–]shoodbworking[S] 25 points26 points ago

Icons, icons everywhere...

[–]chrismastere 2 points3 points ago

There is an app by Microsoft that lets you disable Metro with a click of a button. Can't remember the name though.

[–]g0shua 4 points5 points ago

But once you do that... what's the point? Are there any real advantages or is it just because it's bleeding edge?

[–]sw2de3fr4gt 2 points3 points ago

I've been using the dev preview for a few months. Just think of the metro interface as an extension of your start menu. As a power user, I prefer to search by typing instead of clicking through menus. The metro interface allows you to search through all your programs and files by typing. Honestly, I don't see any advantage of using Win8 except for improved aesthetics and user friendliness.

[–]tieme 2 points3 points ago

As a tech support agent, Windows 8 is going to make me suicidal.

[–]ManWhoKnowsTooMuch -1 points0 points ago

Yep, god forbid you should have to learn something new to do your job -.-

[–]tieme 1 point2 points ago

There are people who have been using a computer for years and can't figure out basic things like how to get to the start menu, or use the backspace key. I'm not exaggerating, I spent over 3 full minutes trying to explain to someone what a spacebar is (and by the end he still didn't get it, I just had him press the long blank bar at the bottom of his keyboard).

It has nothing to do with me being lazy, I full plan to try out Windows 8 and learn how it works. Heck, I might even use it. It has to do with the plethora is fucking idiots who are going to buy it and will not be able to use it.

[–]ManWhoKnowsTooMuch 0 points1 point ago

If you're tired of dealing with idiots who don't know how to use tech and are employed as a tech support agent, you're gonna have a bad time.

Seriously though if being a tech support agent sucks so hard maybe you should use your tech skills to find a job that better suits you? I can't imagine it would be too hard to sell yourself to an IT department who uses windows.

[–]chrismastere 2 points3 points ago

Far less processes used by Windows itself, better optimization for games and better support for multiple screen. If you want the start button back again, there is a way where you change a "1" to a "0" in regedit.

[–]kmoork 5 points6 points ago

I believe they removed that registry option in the latest release. So now your stuck with Metro. And until they allow people to switch back to Aero without any ribbon menus or Metro there will be no Win8 in my home at least.

[–]pomegranati 0 points1 point ago

or you can just click on "desktop" and it will take you to the desktop.

[–]pomegranati 1 point2 points ago

you can exit out of it.

[–]KSUpsych 1 point2 points ago

I thought you could change the format to a standard window's desktop?

[–]gunvalk 2 points3 points ago

You don't even have to change anything. There's an icon called Desktop that you click which takes you to the normal windows 7 type view.

[–]shoodbworking[S] 5 points6 points ago*

That part is fine. It is using the windows phone menu as the new default start menu that grinds my gears.

[–]stupernan 4 points5 points ago

you can change that, and you can remove the icons

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

wait you can get a standard start menu? please give a source on that, since all I've read about the Win 8 preview and the release version of Win 8 is that the start menu is gone for good.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

this doesn't work in the Win 8 consumer preview

[–]stupernan 0 points1 point ago

sorry wrong link :/

http://eins.my/windows-8-old-start-menu-orb/

where there's a will, there's a way.

[–]TruthinessHurts 0 points1 point ago

You can not even bother to install it.

[–]tsar_chasm 0 points1 point ago

That's the "start menu", the desktop is still there.

[–]babyfats 0 points1 point ago

You realize if you dont want the "shit storm" theres a place under the settings that you can have the regular set up.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

Is it that bad?

[–]shoodbworking[S] 23 points24 points ago

Imagine using a non-touch tablet with a mouse.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

protip: use the windows key and type the program you want then hit enter. It works just like the search in 7 did.

[–]stupernan 2 points3 points ago

you should try it on a slate, fuckin golden

i'm sorry you can't adjust to the new GUI, it works wonders for me.

[–]Ice_Pirate 0 points1 point ago

I think windows runs fairly well and performs better than even android on well equipped phones and the faux tablet/laptops. Windows 8 for desktop use seems to be a misguided attempt though. Plenty of people like new things but sometimes things work the best in a certain way even if old. Metro isn't that better solution.

[–]shoodbworking[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh I am sure it is great with touch! I will definitley get a tablet with windows 8. Just doesn't work well on a traditional PC.

[–]stupernan -2 points-1 points ago

i would strongly suggest a slate over a tablet, as there are no tablets that offer any windows os's lol, plus they can be much less expensive with way more capabilities.

If you do get one, i'd suggest the acer iconia tab, at a microsoft store you can get a dual core 1ghz processor with 2 gigs of ram, and a 32 gig drive for 480 (at least the store in san diego got me that deal)

[–]efitz11 0 points1 point ago

i would strongly suggest a slate over a tablet, as there are no tablets that offer any windows os's

I will definitley get a tablet with windows 8.

I think you missed a key point

[–]drdragos 20 points21 points ago

[–]Doomfield 18 points19 points ago

95 wasn't THAT shit though. It was a very important game-changing release. Seriously, that entire list looks like it's just equating major changes with bad and staying the same as good.

[–]drdragos 3 points4 points ago

well there were major changes which were shit but improved by the following version exactly like vista and 7

[–]Doomfield 3 points4 points ago

95's new interface wasn't shit, it was just scary and different.

People were uppity about visuals and indexing eating away at performance and 64bit and UAC breaking compatibility with poorly made xp-era programs(and Vista releasing on less-than-capable laptops) so people hated it even though those features are listed as good things by the time 7 rolled out.

The only one that is actually, truely shit there is ME, which no one will defend.

[–]WaruiKoohii 0 points1 point ago

ME was about as good as 95, 98, and 98SE. The difference was that people were becoming used to NT, which made the 9x editions looks terrible by comparison.

[–]Doomfield 0 points1 point ago

Exactly, so it wasn't really a necessary release with 2000 already floating around and XP on the way. It wasn't entirely terrible, just pointless.

[–]WaruiKoohii 0 points1 point ago

That was Neptune, but the project was scrapped in favor of Whistler, which came out about a year and a half later.

[–]mehum -1 points0 points ago

AFAIK it added nothing of significance to 98SE but broke a whole lot of things and created needless driver issues. In that sense, utter redundancy and makework = shit.

[–]WaruiKoohii 0 points1 point ago

I didn't notice any of that, but I only ran it for a year, so I can't claim to have as much experience with ME as I have with other operating systems.

[–]LostSoulsAlliance -1 points0 points ago

No. ME sucked monkey balls. The end.

[–]pomegranati -3 points-2 points ago

Vista was shit when it came out, but so was XP when it came out. Xp didn't become good until SP2. Vista was fine for me even without SP1.

[–]WaruiKoohii 3 points4 points ago

Both Vista and XP were fine for me out of the gate shrug.

[–]xolo80 4 points5 points ago

But the fact Vista was shit out the gate and you had people being vocal about rolling back to XP IMO doomed Vista because then people didn't want to use it even after it was "fixed"

[–]darkpaladin 2 points3 points ago

Except Vista wasn't shit, it was a little too resource intensive for most machines to run but if your machine could handle it you'd be fine. Besides performance concerns from companies trying to put it on machines that couldn't handle it, you also saw issues with third party support (Creative Labs, I'm looking at you) where manufacturers refused to write new drivers to support the change in architecture.

Really a ton of things that people like about Win 7 existed in Vista first, people were just so afraid to try it because of the bad word of mouth reputation it got. If you took windows 7 and released it in the same time frame as (2006ish) Vista, you'd have had all the same issues and people would be running around saying win 7 is shit.

[–]drdragos 2 points3 points ago

Well 7 is just a faster vista for me.

[–]NudeVeritas 3 points4 points ago

I am sorry, but I hated Vista with passion exactly for the reasons you've mentioned. Windows 7 is/was okeish. I am on Debian now. (bursts into tears)

[–]forloveofscience -2 points-1 points ago

I dunno, I've tried to work with Vista on relatives' computers and it is impossible to change a lot of settings. Don't want Adobe eating up resources by running at startup every time? Too bad, you're locked out. If you like to customize the way your OS runs, Vista is shit.

[–]WaruiKoohii 5 points6 points ago

What? You disable startup applications the same way as XP and 7.

Vista is similar to 7 in terms of customizability. I'm not sure what hacked up install you were running.

[–]forloveofscience -2 points-1 points ago

I've never run Vista. As I said, I've only used others' computers who were running it.

But a lot of the options in msconfig are greyed out--and not just system files. I used Adobe specifically because it simply would not allow me to make Adobe Reader not run at startup on my mom's computer, as well as some other programs that I don't remember since it's been a while. She was just barely over the minimums on her laptop and she really needed every little boost of efficiency she could get. I'm a little bit fanatical about unnecessary things running in the background and cluttering up my startup, so that pretty much guaranteed I wouldn't ever be buying Vista.

[–]WaruiKoohii 3 points4 points ago

You weren't running msconfig in administrator mode.

Right Click the executable > Run As Administrator

You'll see the options appear as expected.

EDIT: I ran Vista on a laptop from 2004 for years. It didn't support Aero, but it was pretty quick. I'd say about as fast as XP, and a tad bit slower than Win2k. 1.5GHz Pentium M Banias 1GB RAM Radeon 9000 (XDDM drivers, so no Aero)

[–]thegreatgload 1 point2 points ago

It's also missing a few products as well; notable Windows 2000 which was between 98 and ME. I used it for awhile and it was pretty good. This list is just classic microsoft bashing becuase its the cool thing to do.

[–]taion809 3 points4 points ago

missing a few versions of windows there... but ok funny anyways :)

[–]nhnifong 4 points5 points ago

Seriously 2000 was the only one I liked :(

[–]mehum 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. I feel genuine nostalgia for 2000. Suddenly here was a powerful, stable OS that I could use and understand -- made me feel far more competent than I really was. And I loved it.

I really couldn't understand why everyone was using XP. XP was like a plastic version of 2000, which felt like it was made out of metal.

[–]Ice_Pirate 0 points1 point ago

2000 was great because NT4 had some limitations like no USB (needed third party support) and some other quirks like piss poor i/o performance. NT4 ran fine but usually got crapped on in small office places by Novell. Many of the offices had dos running still and a 10baseT net. We're talking about actual 386 and 486 machines with actual isa slots instead of the new fangled pci.

Win95 was a big step as was win2k for microsoft. Everything else was just a slight improvement. MS didn't push xp64 driver support because they wanted businesses to migrate to vista/win7 eventually. XP64 with all the service packs can run the meanest and leanest I've seen in the past decade MS OS wise.

I can't upvote you enough as win2k was the OS from MS that actually impressed me.

[–]methinks2015 -1 points0 points ago

I'm pretty sure this pic misses a few major releases, as discussed in this thread.

95 is shit but 98 is good? Am I missing something?

[–]drdragos 3 points4 points ago

oh come on man, I just wanted to post a funny picture.

[–]horseyhorseyhorsey 0 points1 point ago*

It's horrendously bad. Imagine a meter-wide display of which your monitor shows a small viewport on and the only way to move is to slide a scrollbar left and right with your mouse.

Then you go into an option dialog. This one now scrolls up and down. Sometimes the slider is on the left. Sometimes on the right.

And all the text is literally inches high on your 20+" 1080 screen.

It's as if it has been designed to work on a GIANT iPad that you're not allowed to touch with your fingers and the display has been optimised for use by people with cateracts.

I have used many many OSs over several decades and Windows 8 is by far and above the singularly most retarded thing I have ever seen.

But then again, this is from a company that makes a product called "Windows Server 2008 R2 enterprise edition" that gives you a default exporer view of "My Pictures..My Movies..My music..." Because you really wanted to upload your kids photos and MP3s to an "enterprise-class" server product didn't you? Oh. You bought it for running enterprise-class software on? Oh silly you.

[–]demopractical 4 points5 points ago

Doesn't matter; has pinball.

[–]noexistence 2 points3 points ago

pinball physics feel wrong. :(

[–]joeco1 5 points6 points ago

It took 2 -3 weeks for me to figure it out... Now I like it. It took 20 min to find the restart button at first

[–]Battlingdragon 1 point2 points ago

Oh good, I'm not the only one.

[–]shoodbworking[S] 0 points1 point ago

Same here lol. Took forever.

[–]basec0m 13 points14 points ago

It's awful... I put it on my 6 year old daughter's machine and she hated it so fiercely that she made me put Ubuntu back on it. I don't know what MS is thinking. This will never be deployed in the enterprise.

[–]Bear-Necessities 17 points18 points ago

+1 to your daughter

[–]macwiz1220 1 point2 points ago

I upvoted your daughter.

[–]sniff3000 2 points3 points ago

well done ur 6 yr old using linux. color me impressed!

[–]viennasausages 5 points6 points ago

i know an 80 something grandma that uses ubuntu, it's not exactly rocket surgery buddy

[–]pwnedxdead 1 point2 points ago

Rocket surgery? You mean rocket science?

[–]wasexton 6 points7 points ago

No, he meant brain science.

[–]YumYumKittyloaf 2 points3 points ago

I hate how there is no icon or indicator of the start menu hotspot or the upper right hotspot. Just unprofessional. If they made a button at the start menu that opens up the metro start, I would like that. Not having any target to click is a huge pain. Metro isnt bad, just the implementation is shoddy. The search is lame as it auto searches files first even if you look for a system item like control panel. It has promise but there are all these little problems that shouldn't be there.

And why is there very little control over the user experience? If im a power user, i want to be able to mod the metro experience.

[–]PlaySkool 1 point2 points ago

Windows 8, Santorum, Megaupload, I'm waiting for April 1st just to see if it's some kind of sick joke.

[–]juhache 1 point2 points ago

I don't think it's too bad, it's got some pretty neat features.

But for the life of me I can't understand why they're pushing Metro so hard, it's a terrible interface for a Desktop PC no matter how you look at it.

[–]Riogu 1 point2 points ago

It runs smoothly, I could say faster than windows 7. And the boot times are marvelous.

[–]gunvalk 2 points3 points ago

I feel your pain. I used the dev preview for about 2 months. Ended up disabling the new "start" menu and enabling the old one. After that it was just like using Windows 7 except having compatibility issues, so I just switched back.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]gunvalk 1 point2 points ago

Well that is good that you can switch to the old start menu!

You actually can't by default. You have to edit the registry because it's not really an option.

[–]pomegranati 5 points6 points ago

I don't know why people are complaining about it. It's not that bad. It's snappy, current hardware works with it, and you can go to desktop mode easily. Things work with it. I figured out how to use it within 2 minutes. I figured out how to go back to that icon screen within 2 minutes of exiting out of it.

Seriously, Windows 8 isn't that bad. It has a learning curve, but overall, it's not a bad OS.

the only annoyance is having to go through settings to shut down the computer, but then again, I just press the power button.

[–]ThePerson98 2 points3 points ago

It really is remarkably fast. The interface needs a bit more work, but the speed boost from Windows 7 is rather impressive.

[–]nuclear_cheese 4 points5 points ago

I figured out how to use it within 2 minutes.

Liar.

[–]SpreadShot 1 point2 points ago

totally agree. using it for 2 weeks now and its pretty good. Much like Windows 7. people always complain about "Metro", but if you use it like Windows 7 and with "Metro" just being some kind of bonus, its totally ok.

So dont take it like this: Metro + Desktop App = Windows 8, and more like: Desktop + Metro App = Windows 8 and you are fine!

[–]Skyhawker 0 points1 point ago

I like having to go to the settings for power/shutdown options.

Pressing 'Start' to shut down seemed off to me anyway.

I usually keep my PC on 24/7 anyway. I have been using some of the Metro apps, like Vimeo, and Weather...mostly I'm in Desktop mode though, using Chrome, MS Office, MediaMonkey.

I sometimes use Metro's split/side screen mode for calendar/messaging/etc while in desktop mode.

Learning the new ways of doing things, new options, charms, quirks...yeah no more than 2 mins.

My only problem is OpenGL not working properly on my 2900XT. Newer drivers have been released for newer cards, but not mine. So even though it was working perfectly fine on the Developer Preview, I have not been able to play Minecraft on the Consumer Preview since installing it on day 1. (Any help with this would be awesome)

Also: Just yesterday installed W8CP on my loungeroom PC (TV) as well. Working really well!

[–]2stroker 3 points4 points ago

I've been using the consumer preview since it came out. Absolutely love it. Takes a week to get used to the new interface but once you learn the shortcuts and how the new GUI works, it's faster and more efficient then any OS before it. No need for a touch screen, any good mouse controls nearly all the Metro features ( I use a MS 5000 mouse ). Using computers with Windows 7 now sucks.

[–]thegreatgload 3 points4 points ago

Bashing microsoft products with no details and then using an Arrested Development gif... So brave.

[–]Missfawkes 1 point2 points ago

ya I tried this and lets just say 20 mins in I got rid of the thing, never again it is another microsoft abortions that will be force fed to the public!

[–]alamandrax 0 points1 point ago

http://imgur.com/a/GZRyx

Apparently microsoft doesn't want me watching their video.

[–]Okiah 0 points1 point ago

Dude you could of just use https://www.virtualbox.org/ to try it out

its free! lol

[–]yooder 0 points1 point ago

I did that after the developer preview. Glad I didn't install it yet.

[–]fizzgirl333 0 points1 point ago

Upvoted cause it looks like an older version of my friend XD

[–]Veidt_Industries 0 points1 point ago

Completely curious, what don't you like about it?

I've been using it fine for a few weeks now with no regrets.

[–]bricardo 0 points1 point ago

It isn't nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. While the common start button would be a nice adition, it actually works well. The reason why people are having trouble with it is because it doesn't even attempt to explain itself. Once you figure it out, it is actually a very nice system.

It will depends now on how app developers will build for metro.

[–]MachoMuffin 0 points1 point ago

I love it..

[–]IIxBlurr 0 points1 point ago

Personally i enjoy the Windows 8 preview.

[–]Doomfield -1 points0 points ago

I don't mind it.

[–]GrimmsterINC -1 points0 points ago

Too many... blue screens. Driver problems. Driver problems everywhere.

[–]ManWhoKnowsTooMuch -1 points0 points ago

I don't get why people are expecting a preview to be a finished product. It's a preview for a reason---to figure out what still needs to get changed/fixed before RTM.

I guess that's just too simple.

[–]suckthisdeth -1 points0 points ago

i dual boot it and haven't had any problems at all. how can you complain about a free windows os even after being warned its made specifically for a.r.m. devices? spoiled kids.
