I dislike Facebook's "privacy policy" where they own everything you've ever posted or written. I choose not to have an account, but I don't brag about it. Otherwise, I do like the concept of the site.

[–]baumkramer 29 points30 points ago

By that do you mean it's not anything special so you have to try very hard to pretend that it's cool by making posts on reddit?

How does not using a tool to communicate with others improve your life? Even if you have one, you only have to use it as much as you choose.

Just to be clear, that article is a big long straw-man argument against sharing personal information. It doesn't appropriately approach the actual issues involved in sharing the type of information required by a service such as facebook, and it basically only approaches the problem in cases where it's the government trying to gather your information. Beyond that, those types of other social networks really just don't have anywhere near the same level of functionality because of one simple fact: you need other people to be social.

I sure hope you don't use google then either, because they do the same sort of things with your search history etc.

Also, I'm not quite sure what the big problem is with a corporation knowing who your friends are. Personally, I could care less who they sell anonymized information about me to.

I thought I was one of the only people left in the country or developed world that doesn't have, and has never had, a facebook account.

For me its a mix of 1) not being fond of their privacy policy or the views on Privacy that Zuckerburg has expressed in the past, and 2) watching real life friends go apeshit over who did and did not friend them on facebook, or see their real life friendships dissolve because of something they read about that person on Facebook.

I understand that point 2 above is subject to some facet of the personalities of the people involved, but having witnessed it several times with people that were otherwise normal and rationally-minded individuals before Facebook just sent a signal to me that Facebook was not a party I wanted to be invited to.

OP is the reason why people just assume I'm some sort of asshole when I tell them I don't have a Facebook. I'm not self-righteous or self-celebratory about it, I'm not trying to make a statement. I don't have a Facebook simply because when I did, it annoyed me. It's been about five years since I've had a Facebook, and I can say that its non-presence has had prettymuch NO AFFECT one way or the other on my life--in fact, I never even think about it, let alone congratulate myself.

[–]broncavfan 8 points9 points ago

Obligatory. Luckily for Facebook, most people have no idea what that means. I got rid of my Facebook about a year ago and I definitely haven't looked back.

[–]Slorgasm 1 point2 points ago

This. Looking back, I do not regret getting rid of it. I have a coworker who is so close to getting fired for being on Facebook all. the. time. I'm so glad to not be one of the people who are obsessing over what they read/post on Facebook.

Just to be clear: why do we care if we're the product if the personal losses we take on are minimal (or non-existant) and there's value to be gained through using the service? The entire internet works on this model, including reddit, and if you think facebook is some sort of outlier, then I've got some news for you.

[–]broncavfan 2 points3 points ago

For starters, reddit doesn't "require" the type of personal information that Facebook does, so you can't even begin to compare the two. I don't know what websites you visit, but "the entire internet" does not require you to provide a government-issued license to set up an account if you happen to have the same name as the creator.

Your misunderstanding of what Facebook actually does with your information (that is, ANYthing and EVERYthing you post on there) is why Facebook is so dangerous. It does raise the question, though: if millions of people are being foolish, who is the REAL fool? Just because millions of people make the same foolish decision, it doesn't make that decision any less foolish.

[–]JamesGray 3 points4 points ago

I didn't say that at all. My point is that the userbase of reddit is the product which reddit uses to make a profit. Any website which gives free services in exchange for the viewing of ads (or collection of personal data, submission of content etc.) is using its userbase as a product. That's simply how most websites earn money these days, and I don't see what the big deal is. It's a different type of exchange, but as long as you're aware of what's happening, it tends to be a better deal for the public than simply paying for services.

You know, that tin foil hat looks really good on you.

[–]broncavfan 0 points1 point ago

It matches my codpiece. Stay away from my junk, Facebook!

[–]GreatName 1 point2 points ago

My parents were happy with a black & white TV for the longest time too.

[–]fillerpma 4 points5 points ago

People seem to get offended that you're having a great time not having a Facebook account. I don't understand the allure to Facebook, it just seems like a waste of time to me - kind of like the front page of Reddit. My wife has one and we have a lot of the same friends, so I'll see what's going on with everyone occasionally by asking her what people have been posting. Personally, I can do without people posting memes, or what they need for a certain game, lyrics to a song, a video to a song, what they just ate, how their life sucks more than anyone else's, etc, etc, etc. My friends were all a lot more interesting prior to them having a Facebook account. Maybe it's just our friends....

[–]Matthiass 2 points3 points ago

Its still cool and trendy to hate on popular things?

[–]rudezombie 1 point2 points ago

This is basically the 2012 version of "I don't even own a television!"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I mean, I guess it's nice that you don't have a social circle that encompasses the entire globe?

[–]BarshaL 0 points1 point ago

You don't use google either right?

[–]goatlll 0 points1 point ago

Reading through the comments, I have one question: Do people actually take the time to go out and talk to people anymore? People went to parties, met their wives, had a full social life before Facebook or Myspace or live journal or whatever. Don't pretend that Facebook makes it easier to communicate. It just makes it easier to keep tabs on people you may not particularly care about. Really, everyone is going on about the global social network. I will believe that when my feed is not dominated by cats, kids, and links to videos that don't really impact my life at all.

I'm not willing to give up all the summer cleavage/ bikini shots coming soon to a computer near me!

[–]geosensation 0 points1 point ago

Life is so much better without a facebook! Have an upvote brother!

[–]zoltanps -1 points0 points ago

Trying too hard to be a hipster by not using Facebook. Hey buddy, no one gives a flying fuck about your non Facebook life. Lick my taint.

[–]TierOne 0 points1 point ago

Look, I don't like Facebook either, but it's nice to talk and make plans with people.. I do understand that some people would rather live alone forever though..

[–]LG193 0 points1 point ago

If you don't have facebook doesn't mean you don't have any friends. I have never had facebook even though I have plenty of friends.

[–]beccaonice -2 points-1 points ago

Oh, how unique and special of you.

Now, tell me about the people you've met in your past who you've lost touch with, because you're that guy who makes it difficult?

I mean, unless you've lived in the same town your whole life and haven't really traveled. Then by all means, I guess.

[–]JAKnighton -2 points-1 points ago

I guess if you have no friends then dancing while making sandwiches is a good way to pass the time.
