Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It's not just for Bison, they house all animals Like Mice'n stuff.

[–]huitlacoche 20 points21 points ago

[–]Strideo 1 point2 points ago

I thought Ike Tyson was a cross between Mike Tyson and Ike Turner.

Yes, good old Mike and Ike.

[–]FactsAhoy 17 points18 points ago

If you haven't read Aku Aku, by Thor Heyerdahl, you should. It's all about the Easter Islanders and these statues.

The hollow earth

I had a friend who believed this was true. Some people think that the bodies are carvings of these people.

There are stories that Hitler was all about this as well after reading some old text that was found about it. Hitler sent .... i cant remmeber his name right now, but we can call him Bill, so Bill was sent and he later returned saying he found the entrance and the people that lived there. Bill was labled crazy and no one every believed him but Bill to his dieing day stayed true to what he saw.

People believe this because of some evidence in the world, eater island is one, the huge skulls that are found every once and a while. The other piece of evidence that people really stick to is there was a egyptian pharaoh named Akhenaten that didnt seem to fit the norm of the time. He was tall with a big head and he seem to come out of know where. Akhenaten also tried to abandon the common religion of the time. He was the only pharaoh that was sculpted as is. All the other pharaoh's were sculpted in the tradition way but not Akhenaten, he was sculpted anatomically correct, with no makeup. There are a few other people, including historians who believe that Moses of the Bible is actually Pharaoh Akhenaten and that Akhenaten came from the center of the earth.

Anyways feel free to look this up and check it out on your own. Nothing above are my own thoughts, just sharing the random information that I have read and heard over the years. I dont believe or disbelieve any of it. There is information that is intresting and makes you think about it and some that is wtf.

[–]DetectiveStinkEye 6 points7 points ago

Nifty. The mayans used to make there skulls elongated by tying wooden planks to a babies skull.

[–]Tennyson98 8 points9 points ago

And CPS takes your kids for leaving them in the car for 5 mins....

[–]InvisiblePanda9 2 points3 points ago

yeah, don't be a lazy fuck and leave your kid in the car.

[–]ughwhatwasitagain 6 points7 points ago

there are petroglyphs (rock markings) that have been preserved below the soil level, where they have been protected from erosion.

Wow, that's amazing. It's like those statues were time capsules meant to be read in the future. I wonder what it says.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

We're probably voluntarily digging out the entry point for a galactic invasion. Or, this is X marks the spot and that's where the meteor will hit, resetting mankind.

I could be swayed either way...

[–]Canis_lupus 7 points8 points ago

Now that's what I call dogmatic flexibility.

[–]Erzsabet 7 points8 points ago

It's a recipe for chicken noodle soup.

Either that or it says "neener neener, look at my weiner!"

[–]TwistTurtle 82 points83 points ago

Would you all please leave the Guardians alone?! You're going to break them and then we'll have nothing to defend ourselves with when the aliens come back!

[–]matclc 25 points26 points ago

They wouldn't be of much use if they are buried up to their necks.

[–]TwistTurtle 53 points54 points ago

Well how else are they going to harness the power of the very Earth itself if they aren't submerged in it?!

[–]matclc 24 points25 points ago

Apologies. I forgot Tesla's part in the plan.

[–]HookDragger 3 points4 points ago

Wait... is sanctuary back on?

[–]aishataj 4 points5 points ago

Killed by the Guardians.

[–]HardCorwen 2 points3 points ago

As you can see this picture looks circa 70s, so it's too late. The aliens have probably already infiltrated.

[–]Pimpinpinguino 1 point2 points ago

¿Que?

[–]zkDredrick 25 points26 points ago

I'm too busy reading the "Indiana tried to change Pi to 3.2" article linked at the bottom...

[–]mattc286 20 points21 points ago

[–]tau-lepton 2 points3 points ago

Similar intellects created both.

[–]Drive_shaft 16 points17 points ago

That's one huge Pez dispenser.

[–]sweetmitchell 198 points199 points ago

I bet they were disappointed when they found out it wasn't anatomically correct. They were shoveling with anticipation when they got near its junk.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVEMETH 535 points536 points ago

That is the junk. The real statue is laying horizontally underneath all that.

[–]JoepT 58 points59 points ago

A junk with a face?

[–]Magnos 248 points249 points ago

Does yours not have a face?

[–]GodlessMe 317 points318 points ago

Mine had a face on it. She just rolled over and went back to sleep.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVEMETH 58 points59 points ago

I've never had a snorejob. How are those?

[–]eyecite 164 points165 points ago

I call it sleep fapnea, and it's pretty okay.

[–]Tactful 9 points10 points ago

Solid stuff.

[–]nomofica 7 points8 points ago

[–]Willyjwade 0 points1 point ago

Mine has two.

[–]knestleknox 5 points6 points ago

Why else would they call it the "head"?

[–]thesoppywanker 4 points5 points ago

Pretty sure that was the plot to all four Indiana Jones movies. Unless I missed something.

[–]levitron 4 points5 points ago

I have the book where this picture comes from. From memory, each of the statues represents a penis, but anthropomorphized or deified. So of course they don't have penises- why would you put a penis on a penis? (I don't think I've ever wrote the word penis so many times in ones small paragraph...)

[–]ConnorNYACK 2 points3 points ago

yeah, keep telling yourself that, buddy

[–]levitron 1 point2 points ago

penis.

[–]alteron808 17 points18 points ago

I'll shovel you with anticipation.

[–]Whalid 4 points5 points ago

Moai Rule #34? There is probably a subreddit for that...

[–]HopeGrenade 5 points6 points ago

Shoveling with anticipation. I'm trying to picture that.

No the guy in the 70s explorer suite looks suspiciously like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor_Heyerdahl and he died like 10 years ago.

[–]NeverStopPosting 49 points50 points ago

Lies! Thor is immortal.

[–]the_traveler 8 points9 points ago

That's because it's a picture from Thor's book Easter Island.

[–]FactsAhoy 5 points6 points ago

It's called Aku Aku.

[–]incith 6 points7 points ago

From the article,

Update: thanks to some footwork by reader algomeysa, we’ve determined that this photo is from Thor Heyerdahl’s book Easter Island: The Mystery Solved.

[–]ky1t 1 point2 points ago

explorer suite , is that like Windows Office Suite with Internet Explorer?

[–]Wut_Du_Fuq_Iz_Brunch 1 point2 points ago

Worst.explorer.ever

[–]wcmbk 1 point2 points ago

Given that this seems to hit the frontpage of reddit every couple of months, I'd wager not.

[–]stpedro 8 points9 points ago

I have the irresistible urge to scroll down on this picture. What's at the bottom of the hole???

[–]no_egrets 30 points31 points ago

[–]holst09 10 points11 points ago

What if our parents were lying to us And we can dig to China ?

[–]Raziel66 9 points10 points ago

All this time I could have been enjoying authentic egg rolls?!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Is he touching himself?

[–]freex3 21 points22 points ago

I don't suppose there's a Reddit expert handy?

Were these buried intentionally upon/around completion? Cataclysm? Settling?

What, if anything, has been learned from the petroglyphs found?

Why not rebury the excavated stones and dig out a couple more to look for new information?

[–]pieye 25 points26 points ago

I'm not an expert, but had a few lectures on Easter Island years ago.

AFAIK they were manufactured in situ in quarries then moved into position.

I think the theory is that the social competition in their creation deforested the whole island, destroying the wildlife ecosystem and thus the people who made them died out/moved on elsewhere.

No idea about the petroglyphs. I doubt you could say much about them with some sort of "rosetta stone".

[–]freex3 14 points15 points ago

I started to search for all this stuff but the first couple sites I visited went from "oh cool" to "aliens" really quickly. Did NOT feel like donning the foil hat tonight.

It definitely has piqued my interest though. Going to try more reading tomorrow.

[–]FactsAhoy 5 points6 points ago

Just get the book Aku Aku. This picture is most likely from it anyway.

[–]incith 3 points4 points ago

From the article,

Update: thanks to some footwork by reader algomeysa, we’ve determined that this photo is from Thor Heyerdahl’s book Easter Island: The Mystery Solved.

[–]eskimopussy 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for using piqued and not peaked. That is all.

[–]matclc 6 points7 points ago

There's also a new theory concerning rats if I remember correctly.

[–]FranzWilhelmIII 3 points4 points ago

Go on...

[–]bharder 3 points4 points ago

From memory:

Something about rats hitching a ride to the island via boats -> rat population booming -> rats running out of food -> rats start eat trees.

I think the evidence for this was gnaw marks on trees, and the source was a show on the History Channel.

[–]matclc 1 point2 points ago

Hmm. Response to Jared Diamond. Scroll to the deforestation part.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Apparently the whole "cut down every last tree" thing is very unlikely. And it was all a myth from one guy's book. I can't remember the name of the book though, but I read an article debunking the whole thing in Skeptical Inquirer.

[–]gimboland 2 points3 points ago

Jared Diamond's book Collapse has a fascinating chapter telling the story (as best as we understand it) of the collapse of the civilisation which created these statues - and the role the statues played in that collapse. Highly recommended. See also his Long Now seminar (there's a free download of the audio there).

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

If you don't bury a base, time will move the stone much like a boulder.

[–]sverdrupian 1 point2 points ago

I'm not an archeology expert but I have been to Easter Island. This location is the quarry where the moai were carved out of the volcanic rock. The statues were stood up to complete the carving of the back. Once complete, the statues would be moved to one of many ahus located around the island. Over time, dirt and debris have slid down the side of the volcanic cone at the quarry and partly burying the statues abandoned there.

[–]Mugros 3 points4 points ago

A Reddit expert will tell you this has been reposted multiple times.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points ago

I just let out an audible 'Whooaaa' when I saw this.

[–]alahos 6 points7 points ago

Thanks guys! I can finally scratch my balls, you have no idea.

[–]mflux 18 points19 points ago

So they were really just fapping underneath all long.

[–]alphabrah 8 points9 points ago

Mind blowing stuff.

I am not saying its Aliens....

...but its Aliens

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

I'm not sure if this is legit. I read that once british explorers travelled to easter island and reported that all the moai were toppled due to war. Something can't be knocked over and underground surely?

[–]junkmanuk 12 points13 points ago*

It would be nice to get an educated response instead of morons downvoting a valid question about the subject because they disagree.

Some sources I found which appear to support your information, (edit: and the OP information):

http://www.thelovelyplanet.net/moai-statues-of-easter-island/

http://www.archaeologywordsmith.com/lookup.php?category=&where=headword&terms=moai

http://thebesttraveldestinations.com/the-moai-easter-island/

Edit: From the last article:

Although usually identified as “heads” only, the Moai are actually one piece figures with heads and truncated torsos.
All of the Moai were toppled in tribal wars about 250 years ago. Many have recently been rebuilt, construction beginning in the 1950′s.

[–]gnimsh 6 points7 points ago

This leaves me wondering if they were originally only heads if they could be toppled so easily and then rebuilt as full bodies to prevent them from being toppled again.

[–]rozling 6 points7 points ago

When I think about you I touch myself

[–]moogoogaipan11 2 points3 points ago

I'm sitting on the can, this pops up and I said aloud, "Holy shit."

My gf is in the bedroom:

"Problem?"

[–]uexkull 2 points3 points ago

So the builders of these statues must've enclosed the statue and made the rest of the earth match up which is both a pretty amazing feat and illogical (why bury what you have crafted). Or these statues are much older than we think. Or am I wrong?

[–]peetee32 2 points3 points ago

made me think of this:

Jerry and Elaine sit in a booth.

JERRY: So you hurt Vincent's feelings?

ELAINE: (handing Jerry an envelope) Look what came in the mail today.

JERRY: (taking the envelope) Wh..What's this?

Jerry opens the envelope and shakes a small object out onto his palm.

ELAINE: It's the play button, off his VCR.

JERRY: (examining the button) Boy, look how far back it goes. It's like a tooth.

[–]isldpk 2 points3 points ago

they found your mom's dildo

[–]justamobile 5 points6 points ago

They may find the easter eggs if they dig a lil deeper.

[–]Okina 4 points5 points ago

As an archaeology student in Chile, I can say that this picture could be altered to make it look longer than it actually is.

Anyway, the point is that there are plenty of Moais that are not buried underground so I don't get where this idea of them being only heads comes from.

Now, this one is underground because it is at the quarry in Rano Raraku so it was never taken away to put it another place.

[–]almosteeen58 1 point2 points ago

The idea of them being only heads come from people who didn't care after they saw a picture or two.

[–]Dysalot 3 points4 points ago

As a Construction Management student, the lack of shoring on the hole, and the lack of stabilizers on the statue terrifies me.

[–]db2 1 point2 points ago

That's not the bottom of the statue.

[–]Dysalot 1 point2 points ago

Nonetheless they are risking a trench collapse big time.

[–]db2 1 point2 points ago

Were, iirc the pic was from the 60s. You're not wrong though, I wouldn't have climbed in it.

[–]VorpalWalrus 1 point2 points ago

Huh. Only moderately resembles Matt Smith.

[–]farkan 1 point2 points ago

My favorite thing about this picture has always been the canadian tuxedo.

[–]assi9001 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if they were always buried that way or if they used to be taller, but dirt eventually buried them that far...

[–]MemphisRoots 1 point2 points ago

I had the same question

[–]Breadfruit88 1 point2 points ago

Oh God, all this time it was...just the tip

[–]db2 1 point2 points ago

Now you can stop wondering if there's more than just the head and start wondering why the statue has six nipples.

[–]SOL-arSentient 1 point2 points ago

And still people think that civilization didn't begin till Sumer. . .

Le sigh, academics are so stuck in their beliefs that they fail to be objective.

[–]tau-lepton 1 point2 points ago

I like the forested backdrop. Hey, what ever happened to those people, did God save them? since they were obviously devout.

[–]michaelmclees 1 point2 points ago

I have a theory on these. In primitive cultures, people who are sentenced to death are sometimes buried up to their shoulders and then stoned. What if these heads are substitute stonees, like enormous stress relievers for a grieved party. Can't find the person who robbed you at night? Throw rocks at the giant stone head; you'll feel better.

[–]iamhusband 1 point2 points ago

Much more than just a repost.

[–]SemiSeriousSam 1 point2 points ago

Yep, totally done by a bunch of primitives with no tools. We know all the facts, no need to discuss anything further.

ALIENS

[–]sapunec7854 1 point2 points ago

[–]wharrgarble 1 point2 points ago

That's a shit ton of rock. I'm not saying it was aliens but it was aliens.

[–]ScootypuffRanger 1 point2 points ago

[–]meancommentredditor 0 points1 point ago

They unburied this to see if it had tits.

[–]Juris_LV 0 points1 point ago

Why they are so deep in the ground? maybe there was huge vulcanic eruption and all Islaands got many meters of ashes like Pompey and all local people just died under ashes or of starvation?

[–]raddat 0 points1 point ago

Incredible to think how much earth has built up over that time.

[–]TommyPaine 0 points1 point ago

How did it get buried that deep after 500-750 years?

[–]vivalahoot 0 points1 point ago

Yep. Heads, shoulders, knees and toes.

[–]ara_p 0 points1 point ago

Looks like there's a whole Easter Island Statue Project (with more pics).

[–]chipsharp0 0 points1 point ago

Oh this? This, it's just muh package. God delivered it, I signed for it, the whole world keeps on spinnin'.

[–]paddykegs 0 points1 point ago

DX, Suck it

[–]smasherella 0 points1 point ago

In all the years following the initial discovery of these heads, did the thought of perhaps digging a little deeper never occur?

[–]Mies_van_der_Robot 0 points1 point ago

I love this photo

[–]kukkuzejt 0 points1 point ago

Heads, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes...

They're obviously toys to keep the children entertained while their parents are gone fishing.

[–]karma_virus 0 points1 point ago

They dig all the way down here to discover not only that there's an entire body to th statue, but that it's grabbing its junk. Classic ancient trolling.

[–]mat_899 0 points1 point ago

Could this mean that they are older than we think? Just by the sheer amount of sediments ( or dirt). How much time could it take to bury this statue to 3/4 of its height? Because they wouldn't just bury this themselves (the people who built them), mostly because you can see details of the hands.

Did anyone heard about their eyes too? On the wiki page it says :"The whites of the eyes were made of coral, the iris was made of obsidian or red scoria" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Island

[–]5earch 0 points1 point ago

why is the statue holding his penis?

[–]help_me_understand9 0 points1 point ago

The statue is touching itself, no??

[–]A1CArtwood 0 points1 point ago

And now this leads me to wonder if no one thought to just start digging around them to see if there was any more to them until now.

[–]Emerse 0 points1 point ago

Are those marking at the very bottom hands?

[–]queen_frostine 0 points1 point ago

Squidward? Are you in there? Squidward? SQUIDWARD!!!!!!

[–]PintoTheBurninator 0 points1 point ago

ahh Easter Island - the story of an entire society that died as the result of obsessive one-upsmanship

[–]sdsaf94 0 points1 point ago

I actually just visited Easter Island and unfortunately after they dug this up they buried it again to prevent erosion. This is at the quarry where these statues (moai) were made, here is a picture of how they look like in their final display position.

[–]grumblz 0 points1 point ago

theres no way a bunch of native americans could have done that by themselves! IT COULD ONLY BE ALIENS.

[–]FUCK_ME_IN_THE_TITS 0 points1 point ago

[–]jasonlol 0 points1 point ago

I'm not saying it's aliens, but aliens... as ancient astronaut theorists believe.

[–]modestlycocky 0 points1 point ago

There's an awesome episode of "The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest" that tackles these guys. I can't help but think of it when I see them.
