        I always thought it was neat that LT. Dan points out that his new legs are made of the same material as the space shuttle.             It's a melanic jaguar. They are all spotted it just depends whether it carries the trait for melanism or not. The trait for melanism makes the jaguar appear black and makes the spots seem virtually non existent even though they are still there. The spots are more visible when jaguars are young because the spots are actually on the skin and the fur is still not fully developed.

            Said melanic jaguars being more common among certain regional populations than in others. The primary example is South America's Gran Chaco where darkly-colored (and unusually large) jaguars are the rule rather than the exception.

                  Incorrect. This cat has jaguar-specific markings and is far more robust than any leopard. In fact, not only do near or completely black jaguars exist in the wild, but in certain parts of South America, they are actually the dominant phenotype for the species. All of which is just to say that despite what you may have read, this is in fact a jaguar, not a hybrid.

                  Panthera (commonly called Panther) is a genus which includes: the tiger, the lion, the jaguar, and the leopard. TECHNICALLY panther refers to all big cats but commonly refers to a black cat. It is just Melanism.

                          "Panthers" are just big cats with black fur. They can be jaguars, leopards, and there have been unconfirmed reports of cougar panthers. It's a lot like being albino.

                          No, the term you are looking for is melanistic. Panthers can be cougars, jaguars, or leopards. The melanistic form (as seen in the picture) happens in jaguars and leopards. Black cougars are considered a cyptid since no known specimen has been either bred in captivity or captured, they have only been identified through eyewitness accounts.

                          There are historical references to melanistic tigers and lions but no concrete proof that it is a regular mutation.

                          There is something in tigers called a pseudo-melanism where the stripes are so close together that they look all black, but it is not true melanism.

                          Basically, IIRC, these genes are so rare and recessive that breeding to get them expressed would cause genetic disorders to be expressed too, because it would entail a degree of inbreeding. Breeders are opposed to limiting genetic diversity and inbreeding by principle, and very few care enough about cool looking animals to compromise those principles. Were there a way to see these special tigers (melanistic, white without stripes, golden tabby, to name a few type of coats) without having to do such dangerous breeding, I'm sure it would be employed. There's a frightening picture of a mentally retarded white tiger that I think illustrates this point. It might be unrelated, but still the picture/article is freaky as hell.

                          EDIT: Found the article. It does have to do with my point. Breeders, desperate for white tigers, resorted to inbreeding to get them, inadvertently creating this poor guy.

                          I don't really know the answer to that. I only have experience in breeding melanistic reptiles where the mutation is common. You'd probably have to ask a geneticist how difficult that would be.

                            Yeah, very rary look up blue/maltese tiger. It's a real life mythical creature the thing is so damn rare. Nothing too spectacular about these kind of mutations, nothing else really differs except skin/hair pigmentation. However, in the case of tigers sometimes these melanistic and albino versions are killed by the mother for being strange or sometimes smaller that the other offspring. There was a case of a really strange tiger being born in an american zoo from perfectly normal parents many decades ago but the mother killed the little guy.

                              It's an old world term that originally referred specifically to black leopards but that in post-columbian times was adapted to mean black jaguars as well. (As was the term, "tiger," or "tigre.") While the word has never had much in the way of scientific basis, most experts agree that due to its old world provenance, like "tiger," it doesn't properly apply to jaguars.

                              A Florida Panther is not actually a panther. It is in the genus puma not panthera. They are the same species as mountain lions, but that wasn't understood when they were named.

                                No there are differences (aside from the melanistic trait of being black) and I think he was right on spotting that. Look at the size of those jaw muscles, jaguars have over developed mandibles and jaw muscles (strongest of all cats).

                                      No, panthers can refer to melanistic forms, normal forms or albino forms of jaguars, leopards, and cougars. It's from the genus name (Panthera, but cougars are genus Puma so not sure why they're called panthers as well) and just covers a wider range of animals. So if you had normal coloured jaguar it would be just panther.

                                          If I'm not mistaken, this is not a panther. This is (probably) a jaguar with melaism (the opposite of albinism). Panthers are always completely black. Right?
