Pitbull rhymed "Kodak" with "Kodak". Mind = blown.

[–]mocotazo 233 points234 points ago

Pitbull signed an endorsement deal with Kodak. He wasn't even trying to rhyme it with anything, he just has to namedrop them a certain number of times in his singles.

[–]rodneyfool 77 points78 points ago

Brought to you by Carl's Jr.

[–]frankstah 17 points18 points ago

He did but it was a promotional tour that never came to fruit that he still got paid for. He just mentioned them because he wanted to.

[–]Brancher 70 points71 points ago

Ying Yang Twins rhymed "Soft" with "Soft"

"You got a sexy ass body and your ass look soft,

Mind if I touch it? and see if its soft?"

[–]Ghstfce 58 points59 points ago

Well there's two of them. Maybe they haven't quite worked out that whole "knowing what the other is thinking" twin thing.

[–]letsRACEturtles 20 points21 points ago

no, you're thinking of fraternal twins, not ying yang twins

[–]Ghstfce 22 points23 points ago

So only their penises look alike?

I once stayed at the same hotel as Pitbull. He really does wear sunglasses 24/7.

[–]juicycunts 5 points6 points ago

pitbull wearing sunglasses? you sure it wasn't spuds mackenzie?

[–]Kanye_Westicles 46 points47 points ago

He didn't even come up with it himself, "Picture that with a kodak" is taken from "I've Got a Story to Tell" by Biggie Smalls.

[–]nothin_but_quotes 61 points62 points ago

But he did think of the genius, "Or better yet, take a picture of me in Times Square with a kodak."

Fucking brilliant.

[–]threetwojuan 43 points44 points ago

If i had a nickel for every time jay z bit a line from biggie i would have a lot of nickels.

[–]indraneel 30 points31 points ago

"I'm not a biter I'm a writer for myself and others / I say a B.I.G. verse I'm only biggin' up my brother" - hov

[–]Kanye_Westicles 8 points9 points ago

I was going to say this, he actually does it to everyone though. His entire formula is "let me take a cool line from a song released 10 years ago, repeat it a thousand times, and make it into a pop song".

[–]Din0321 9 points10 points ago

"You had a hot line, i made it a hot song" jay z. At least he acknowledges it

[–]Wikkd1 2 points3 points ago

If you're having nickel problems, I feel bad for ya son.

[–]niggytardust2000 2 points3 points ago

They worked together and more importantly grew up in the same area.

If you listen to any of the many Bed-Stuy rappers you will hear many of the same lyrics and lingo. This area produced so many good rappers it's not funny, I like to think of it's street corners as an artists colony.

If you one to hear one that truly elevated the bed stuy style to another level, all ears should be on MOS DEF.

He openly challenged Jay and others to go to battle with him on NYC biggest radio station in 2009.

There might be a few better, maybe but NO ONE wants to battle MOS DEF.

[–]48TomKat 7 points8 points ago

Pitbull does that all the time. 'go girl' and lines in 'hotel room service' are taken from biggie songs.

[–]meantism 63 points64 points ago

THE MIND OF A FUCKING GENIUS RIGHT THERE.

[–]eeviltwin 15 points16 points ago

Yeah, that one always drove me crazy. None of my friends had even noticed until I pointed it out, which boggles my mind.

Also, the first two stanzas of Meet Me Halfway by The Black Eyed Peas rhyme the word 'you' with itself FIVE TIMES! FIVE! ಠ_ಠ

[–]Ghstfce 59 points60 points ago

I'm pretty convinced the only reason the Black Eyed Peas exist is to give 40-50 year old women something to dance to.

[–]eeviltwin 36 points37 points ago

My mother is in her early 40s. From my experience, this logic checks out.

[–]biggmclargehuge 20 points21 points ago

what about finger eleven in paralyzer where he rhymes place 3 times in a row: "a dark lit place, or your place, or my place"

[–]Ghstfce 17 points18 points ago

True. But someone is more likely to say this example in ordinary conversation without sounding too awkward..

Hey, I don't know if you've ever had lasaNIGGAna, but it's delicious.

[–]swing9this 35 points36 points ago

Yeah there are a couple real gems, especially in some of his older stuff and mix tapes.

My personal favorite (though violent) is:

  • Shots through the driver side
  • That means the driver died
  • Car crash killed the passenger
  • Double homicide

The flow when he raps it is just really good.

[–]funkgerm 120 points121 points ago

What people don't seem to realize is that they don't just rhyme the last word in a line. Most rappers have multi-syllabic rhyming schemes in their lyrics so even if every line ends with the word "nigga" that doesn't mean they're just rhyming "nigga" with "nigga."

Why do people think all rap is easy or that rappers are stupid? Not all rap is like the top 40 rap that people are more familiar with. The production makes a big difference too.

My favorite rapper is prolly Big Pun with Yeeeah Baby being his best album. His multi-sylliable rhyming is pretty amazing.

As an example of something that might sound dumb to others is Camron's Purple Haze album. It sound like a bunch of random words thrown together, but if you get all his references then his shit seems genius.

[–]kcstrike 27 points28 points ago

i agree but no point arguing here this is just a circle jerk

[–]InTheSoupTogether 2 points3 points ago

[–]CaptainNoBoat 58 points59 points ago

I hate the hip-hop naysayers.. It's like saying rock is shitty because of Nickelback.

Hip-hop is one of the largest, most influential musical movements in history. Tons of artists use a wide range of genres to incorporate into their music, using incredible lyrics. A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Jungle Brothers, Jay-Z, Tupac, Biggie, Del The Funky Homosapien, Outkast, Public Enemy. Hell, even Donald Glover is making some pretty good stuff.

Yeah, a lot of mainstream rap sucks: Derp. Just like any other genre. It doesn't discount what hip-hop has done for music.

[–]totallylegitguy 22 points23 points ago

Can't forget Wu-tang, MF Doom, Mos Def, Talib Kweil, Krs-one, De la soul, Lupe Fiasco, Immortal Technique, Nine, Onyx (older stuff), Nas, Blackalious, Heavy D, Rakim, ...

[–]MeMyselForWho 10 points11 points ago

Capital Punishment is widely considered his best album and I tend to agree.

[–]Just_4_The_Upboats 2 points3 points ago

The best thing about Pun was that he could put those multis together when he weighed over 600 pounds, just imagine the breath control. Geez.

[–]beccaonice 2 points3 points ago

It's just socially acceptable racism.

[–]sinocarD44 104 points105 points ago

If you can freestyle for more than a minute and make sense, then say rap is easy.

[–]bigwax 15 points16 points ago

Too bad no legit freestyles actually sound listenable. Maybe as a form of entertainment, but not music. I hope to god you don't actually believe that when a track reads 'freestyle' that they are making it up improv. There are multiple meanings for freestyle. 1) Improv lyrics, and 2) A rap about no specific topic.

This is coming from a huge hiphop fan. I'm just saying your comment doesn't make sense.

[–]sinocarD44 6 points7 points ago

Agreed. And no, I don't think freestyle is made up on the spot when it's recorded. Just wanted to point out that it can be difficult being lyrically creative. I did a poor job of stating that originally.

[–]brokenladder24 41 points42 points ago

This is true but, the sentence usually rhymes the word before "nigga" with another word followed by "nigga" again.

ex. Yo my shit POPPIN NIGGA ... yo bitch be TOPPIN NIGGAS

Somethin' like that.

[–]TownesVanZandt 17 points18 points ago

Ah, yes, indeed. I'll forward this to the professor immediately.

[–]lunyboy 2 points3 points ago

I believe this is called feminine rhyme (multi-syllabic rhymes), and sometimes includes internal rhyme (Think Dr. Seuss). They both play important parts of complex rhyme schemes seen in talented wordsmiths across the hip-hop spectrum.

Using the same last word is a mark of skill, when it isn't forced and the more complex the pattern, the better the resolution even it if is the same word.

[–]PrepareThyAngus 28 points29 points ago

Instantly reminded me of this

[–]Puppetz 10 points11 points ago

That can't possibly be real..

[–]DemonstrativePronoun 13 points14 points ago

I'm pretty sure they had a different song that said "nigga" but it wasn't THAT obvious. Someone dubbed the other song over it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Nailed it. The real video is just a normal rap song that happened to have "nigga" in the clip they used.

[–]lurkingfromhome 102 points103 points ago

I never understood the lyrics thing, I honestly only know the lyrics to a handful songs, to me the artists voice is more like an additional instrument. That being said Lil Wayne is not my cup of tea, but how am I to judge what other people find appealing?

[–]DemonstrativePronoun 28 points29 points ago

For rap, if you're looking at it technically, it's all about the lyrics and the rhythm in which they're said in. People pay a lot of attention to lyrics in rap because they're a major defining factor of a good rapper.

[–]dhamilt9 4 points5 points ago

"Boop boop bee, baba daba de"

-Ella Fitzgerald

[–]Billybones116 12 points13 points ago

The thing is, in rap, lyrics are more important because the voice lacks melody.

[–]Kaiosama 4 points5 points ago

So that's why bone-thugs got away with basically unintelligible lyrics.

They had melody :)

[–]gwhandle 2 points3 points ago

There's more space for lyrics, and I'm a big fan of very lyrical rappers. But I wouldn't say it's more reliant because of lack of melody; what rap vocals lack in melody, they gain in rhythm.

[–]rjcarr 13 points14 points ago

I agree. Some people actually listen closely to lyrics, but as you said, I mostly see it as an instrument, and listen to the song as a whole. A person can be singing absolute nonsense and for me it still might be a good song.

[–]Stickyresin 9 points10 points ago

I completely agree about lyrics just being another instrument. When you sing it acts like a melody or a harmony, but for rap it's a little different. Because there isn't much change in pitch (except for inflections) rap lyrics act as more of a percussive or rhythmic instrument than a melodic or harmonic instrument.

However, I don't think that means that rap lyrics are any more basic or uninteresting compared to singing lyrics. I know it is not always evident with some of the crap that you hear, but rap lyrics focus more on rhyming and syllable timing than other genres' lyrics do. In that sense, I've always felt that the syllable pronunciations are like the "pitch" of the rap lyric, and just as music is composed of patterns of pitches, rap lyrics are composed of patterns of syllables. Again, it's not always evident with the lazy 1-syllable rhymes that a lot of rappers do, but when you hear something complex like a 3-syllable rhyme pattern repeated throughout 4 lines with inter-line rhymes or consonant alliteration between, it evokes the same sort of emotional response as when you hear a catchy melody or a powerful harmony.

[–]jbramley 4 points5 points ago

To me it really depends on the style and artist. For good club songs, the lyrics are basically irrelevant, and the voice really is an instrument. For more meaningful songs, the words are important.

As for Lil Wayne, I like him as a guest artist on other tracks. His voice and flow are a great interlude.

[–]hiphopkilledmyhamste 19 points20 points ago

i love lyrics, like some of lupes songs are really deep and makes me appreciate the song, now lil wayne... i try not to think of him too much...

Diddy has almost nothing in common with the first two on your list.

Also I hope that this isn't just some white nerd "RAP SUCKS, I LISTEN TO DREAM THEATER SO I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT MUSIC" circle jerk. Not that Dream Theater is bad. Hoping, like you, it's humor here.

But fucking seriously, reading something like this:

you know whats even harder? any other music.

Depresses me. :\

edit: This is purely anecdotal evidence, but I believe I've seen a trend of people who loudly proclaim a dislike for a certain genre of music (usually metal, hip hop, or country) have a really shitty taste themselves. Let's argue about what's better: Coldplay, Godsmack, Garth Brooks, or Soulja Boy Tell'em.

[–]MisterWoofers 2 points3 points ago

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who notices that trend. I get excited when I meet someone with a variety of musical taste. So far, thats been an estimated 2 people haha

[–]GrayStudios 23 points24 points ago*

An example of Multisyllabic rhymes from the first Lil Wayne song I could think of: The Sky is the Limit. (Note, this was 2 years after Tha Carter II, which many argue to be his peak)

You know I ride for my motherfunkin' niggas/ Most likely I'm gonna die with my finger on the trigger/ They tell me don't get high, and I should try to make a living/ I tell them I'm a hustler and I'd rather make a killing/ My eyes is so wide as he watching the skillet/ I let my bitch bag it, if she steal it, I'm gonna kill her/ I bulletproof the ride, now I feel like armadillas/ And fuck you, hospital, young money, we're the illest/ And I ain't gotta lie when I tell you I'm the illest/ My flow is nasty, like C Y Phyllis/ Self made G, and them bitches know the business/ Relying on rap, but in the kitchen I'm a chemist/ And when I was 5, my favorite movie was "The Gremlins"/ Ain't got shit to do with this, but I just thought that I should mention/ You looking for divine and the little intervention/ And them birds don't fly, without my permission/ I'm probably in the sky, flying with the fishes/ Or maybe in the ocean, swimming with the pigeons/ See my world is different, Like Dwayne Wade/ And if you want trouble, bitch, I want the same thing/

Some of this is hard to decipher because his accent is what makes the vowel sounds match up, and this would be a LOT easier to display if I could color code what rhymes with what. I'm not trying to tell you guys that Lil' Wayne is the best rapper alive; he's NOT. I'm just saying, the bandwagon that goes on with the internet hating Lil' Wayne is a misguided and uneducated one. He's gotten lazy and sloppy and he puts out some garbage. Rebirth was awful. But he also did some amazing stuff. Do you know who DESERVES to be made fun of constantly? Soulja Boy. Waka Flocka. People who have NEVER put out anything worth dookie. Lil Wayne has fallen from where he once was, but semi-recently 6 Foot 7 Foot was awesome.

TL;DR Lil Wayne is not as bad as everyone says, and it's easy to down-talk when you don't actually understand how much work goes into the MIDDLE of a verse and not just the last syllable of each line. Learn ya some.

*edit formatting

The g in lasagne is a SOFT g, not silent. If you remove the g, it isn't pronounced the same, ie lasane.

[–]Aquahammer 11 points12 points ago

Here I was thinking he was saying "Bitch, real G's moving salads like lasagna"

[–]langds 6 points7 points ago

That lyric had always confused me until just now, seeing it typed out. The "G" in Lasagna is silent. I feel so stupid now. Can't tell if pointing out this specific lyric was meant to show that the lyrics are stupid/nonsensical, or cool if you dissect it, but at any rate, in that song, this type of word play is constant, easy to miss, if you ask me.

[–]dedbodiez 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for sharing the clip.

[–]Nasir742 9 points10 points ago

I thought I was the only one hearing lasagna

Here's my attempt to highjack the top comment to show you hiphop-haters how lyrically impressive hiphop can be:

You know that Lil Wayne isn't the one who sang that part and that's just background music and not actual lyrics to the song... right? Maybe if you listened to the lyrics of that song you'd be more impressed. They're some of his best.

[–]JSleek 10 points11 points ago

I might go crazy on these niggas, I don't give a muthafuck, run up in a nigga's house and shoot his grandmutha up.

[–]BadJokeHour 2 points3 points ago

Wrong song...

[–]poopOnU 48 points49 points ago

I'ma nigga wit money [x3] And I don't love dat bitch I tell er bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch make me rich I'ma nigga wit money And I don't love dat bitch

-Lil' Wayne

By the way, these were the first I found after randomly clicking on any song of his.

[–]CannedBeef 27 points28 points ago

"I'm a venereal disease like a menstrual bleed" OMG SO GOOD

[–]eyeQ 30 points31 points ago

Let me add punctuation and the rest of the line: "I'm a venereal disease. Like a menstrual bleed, through the pencil I leak on the sheet of the tablet in my mind."

He's just saying he doesn't write his lyrics down.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

'Does he write his own rhymes?' Well, sort of

I think 'em

That mean I forgot betta shit than you eva thought of

[–]RaginReaganomics 9 points10 points ago

I actually like Lil Wayne. It's just fun to make fun of him.

[–]I_AM_LARS 33 points34 points ago

"Herp derp I only passingly listen to radio rap. " -you

[–]fiveanthems 2 points3 points ago

I liked radio raps first album best.

"I'm a gangsta by choice, I hope my sons choose wiser; and don't call me sir, call me survivor"

[–]terqui 38 points39 points ago

Life is hard when you're adopted at age 12 by one of the biggest, richest names in the hip-hop business.

[–]sillyrabbits 13 points14 points ago

Twleve years is a long time.

[–]Disgustingly_Blunt 130 points131 points ago

White n Nerdy thinks rap is about rhyming.

Wonders why they dont have a rap career.

[–]HailToTheVictors 103 points104 points ago

Hey! Leave Wierd Al out of this.

[–]D34THST4R 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, I think the intention was to rhyme THIS SHIT with BIZKIT

[–]MassiveBastard 16 points17 points ago*

Good job Lil' Wayne represents the whole rap genre for reddit.

[–]MuseofRose 12 points13 points ago

Lol well most of these dorks think they are ultra sophisticated because they ponder and reflect over Sigur Ross and saving the whales.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points ago

You couldn't even rap a present.

[–]I_use_bro_mockingly 6 points7 points ago

This might be appropriate if there was no such thing as Dedication 2, The Carter 2 and No Ceilings. Too bad he was approaching Nas level lyricism and wit on those mixes/albums...

[–]apullin 3 points4 points ago

That's racist. You can't talk about black people.

[–]sickerthanuraverage 29 points30 points ago

Im sick of reddit hating on lil wayne. Sit down and listen to a full lil wayne mixtape (the dedication 3 for example). Expose yourself to a large enough sample of his music (beyond his radio songs). Then critique him. Every time I listen to a group of his songs I notice another clever reference wayne makes.

I understand the complaints with rap being dumbed down, but even jay-z admits thats how you sell records.

[–]BaileyMD 49 points50 points ago

I dumb down for my audience and double my dollars, they criticize me for it yet they all yell holla, if skills sold truth be told, I'd probably be, lyrically Talib Kweli, truthfully I wanna rhyme like common sense but I sold 5 mil and I haven't rhymed like common since.

-Jay-Z moment of clarity.

[–]sickerthanuraverage 8 points9 points ago

Exactly the line I was thinking of.

[–]illmatic707 12 points13 points ago

You guys know rock has some shitty fucking lyrics too right? Why doesn't reddit go hate on AC/DC: "she shook me alllll night long". Yea real lyrical genius there. Just because it's trendy on this website to hate on rap doesn't mean it makes sense.

[–]Justintime233 5 points6 points ago

Now make one about Pitbull and Kodak.

[–]baalsitch 2 points3 points ago

Actually the easily rymed words are: Lexus, Texas, bitches, riches nigga(s).
