That is actually a good idea, if you show a bear that you are not afraid of it they will think you are stronger than they are and they will not mess with you. Bears are not smart enough to realize that we are weaker than them.

Yeah, slightly. It's incredible that he managed to survive so long, though as the one man in the movie said, it was likely because the bears thought there was something wrong with him.
