Telephoto compression explains this 100%.

The longer the focal length (zoom length for the layperson) of a lens, the more it "compresses" things in the distance. For this same reason, you can get photos of two parallel aircraft, that legally are at least 2,000 feet apart horizontally, but look like they're damn near touching:

That's the Pasher Bulka, during a storm in Newcastle (the city I live in) they ran aground was there for about a week before they dragged it off, it got MASSIVELY fined and it was so badly damaged it got decomissioned, the local council wanted to buy the propellor to put in the park but they refused to sell it. =(

Was cool as fuck, security were all over the beach so you couldn't actually get down there.
