But I have heard this sentiment expressed after a debate. It is somehow more disheartening than when they don't realize they are doing it.

You struggle as hard as you can to stop the enormous machine, yet it simply brushes you off and stomps at you, continuing it's journey into the abyss and dragging the world with it.

At least, that's the impression I get in these cases.

I've actually heard something like many times before, basically went "I know that you make good arguments and science and stuff but this is just how I feel."

I find the doublethink most striking in how quickly then can switch from saying it's necessary to have "faith", which is accepting it without proof, to saying they can prove the bible is true, and back again.

Here are two totally contradictory ideas and they claim both are basis for biblical truth and therefore the entire universe, switching from one to the other sometimes in the same sentence.

My mom has pretty much said this exact thing when I try to debate her on homeopathy and such. Less articulately, but the same idea.
