I never understood what the mole speech was imitating.

[–]quarkbeast 49 points50 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always assumed it was Westcountry English - in particular Cornwall.

[–]bobbieluvsya 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Indeed it is!

I played Foremole in a musical production of Redwall, so I had to study this shit.

[–]camerack 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just thought that the relation of foremole to foreman was awesome. Well done Mr. Jacques

[–]bobbieluvsya 13 points14 points ago

When I was a kid reading the books, I thought it was his actual name, and that moles just lived really long.

[–]camerack 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A kid has every right to think whatever he or she wants about a fantasy book. I support your view good sir!

Madam, but thanks!

When my cat died, I remember I asked my parents for a mole, because they live forever. Oh kid-self.

Brit here, it is west country, but not cornwall.

[–]Jurassic-Bark 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're interested it is westcountry, but not as far as cornwall, more gloucestershire/somerset way of speech. Cornwall is a little different, and two shires best meet the phonetics of the speech.

*Side note: This area (between Stroud and Gloucester) holds the best sport in the world held, cheese rolling, where people throw themselves down a cliff/hill after some cheese in order to win said cheese. *

Edit: Grammar

RIP Brian Jacques

[–]shoeboom 28 points29 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember I was at a Barnes & Noble when I found out about his death. And I only happened to find out because I needed to verify his signature. I had randomly come across a copy of Marlfox in the used books section of B&N and was amazed to find that there was a signature on the title page. Feeling incredibly lucky and hoping that it wasn't a fake, I googled "Brian Jacques autograph" on my friend's phone.....only to find a number of recent links showing that my most beloved childhood author has just passed that weekend. It was both a serendipitous and tragic moment.

I ended up purchasing that copy of Marlfox (it was a legit signature) and gave it as a present to my little brother who is also an avid fan of the Redwall series, reliving the fantastic tales of Mossflower and beyond as I once did when I was his age.

[–]Asdayasman 4 points5 points ago

AWW FUCK HE DIED?! shit dude i read all the redwall books. i'm in college now so if i find out someone died it's either through facebook, john stewart, or reddit. man...RIP indeed.

[–]davers84 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He died right before his last book came out. Very sad. I use to have all the books on hardback and a huge collection of rare Redwall memorabilia. These will always be my favorite series.

Otters ftw too!

to be honest, after all the original characters from redwall and mattimeo and pearls of lutra died, i had so many feels i couldn't hold them all. but i finished all the books because they each had characters with their own merits. motherfucking loved those Churchmice though. shit was tough but they were like "fuck it we're poor but we're a family".

[–]ladywindermere 5 points6 points ago

;_; He's dead. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW! I stopped reading his books when I went to High School, but I had all of them leading up to Rakkety Tam. These books were such a big part of my middle school, the original was definitely my favorite. If it weren't for those books, I would be such a different person than I am today...being a college frosh, looking back...

[–]CedarWolf 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Who says that I am dead

Knows nought at all.

I - am that is,

Two mice within Redwall.

The Warrior sleeps

'Twixt Hall and Cavern Hole.

I - am that is,

Take on my mighty role.

Look for the sword

In moonlight streaming forth,

At night, when day's first hour

Reflects the North.

From o'er the threshold

Seek and you will see;

I - am that is,

My sword will wield for me.

~

The same as the steps 'twixt the Hall,

Remember and look to the centre.

My password again is Redwall,

Am that is, you alone are to enter.

~

By the moonlight, on the hour,

In my threshold space lay me.

Watch the beam reflect my power,

Unite once more my sword with me.

I - am that is, stand true for all.

O warrior mouse, protect Redwall.

I'm crying just a little, rereading this... happy tears, happy tears. When I found out Brian Jacques had died, I made a little tomb like Martin's under the stairs of my sandstone fortress in Minecraft and I left flowers on his shelf at the library where I volunteered for nearly 7 years. I had to do something.

Good god, I'm having such an attack of nostalgia it almost hurts. I read so many of these books when I was a kid.

Loamhedge is the one I remember best. I fucking loved Bragoon and Saro, they represented the travelling adventurer I wanted to be. They die together at the end after being heroic as fuck and agree to walk together into the beyond. TOO MANY FEELS.

Oh and does anyone remember the part in Triss (I think that was it) where they sail to a vole (or something) colony island? Every night, all the voles have to line up and one by one walk under a stalactite and whoever it drips on gets sacrificed to a giant water snake. Scared the SHIT out of me. Dripping water makes me nervous.

Aw man and the animated series which covered Redwall, Mattimeo and Martin the Warrior!

This post should not have been in r/funny at all...

[–]PimpyMcFinnigan 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

idk why but Loamhedge to date is the only redwall book that i just couldn't get through, i probably skipped a chapter or two. they were pretty badass though characters though

Are they actively making them? I always thought that it would be a great movie series. There's so much material! I wonder why it never happened...

[–]Shwoodge 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it would be hard to make a CG movie about redwall with the target audience being kids, while having to not make it gory and brutal, thus ruining the books because it wouldn't be accurate.

[–]crevdillion 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's true. Let's just all agree m night shyamalan shouldn't be involved if they do make it.

Oh my. I cant believe this, nostalgia overload!! I clicked on the link and it was like I was back again, sitting in class sneaking a read through the fantasy land of Mossflower woods with the gallant hares and the crazy otters through the sunlit woods and swamplands, to the crashing shores of Salamandastron where the drinking songs float through the air of long ago battles. These books seriously made my childhood. Growing up in dreary, rainy old Lancashire they opened my mind up to the imaginary and the fantasy like never before. I wonder how I would have turned out now without them. I remember the Pearls of Lutra was one of the first true novels I ever read and this series was what really got me into reading

It makes me so unbelievably sad that Brian is gone. It was always my dream to meet him and talk to the man behind my late childhood. Once more for Redwall!!!!

EDIT: DID ANYONE KNOW THIS WAS CREATED??

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O9HZHK

"It is a full length CD (43:52) with 10 tracks in a blend of large scale orchestrations, choir, and ambient electronic music. Each track represents a place, character, or event that is in most of the typical Redwall books with the intention to be a sort of imaginary soundtrack complementing the books. The music ranges from peaceful, happy, exciting and adventurous to sorrowful, dangerous, and downright evil."

I'm too old to have read these when I was a kid, but I started reading Redwall to my 7 year old son a couple of weeks ago and we are almost done now. So good. I've seem my son's jaw drop several times. I've gotten to the end of a chapter and just stopped and looked at my son, both of us in stunned silence. Some of the chapter cliffhangers have had him literally yelling "NO!!!!" because we were done for the night. People talk about how brutal the Ice and Fire books are, but for sheer body count it seems like Redwall gives them a run for the money.

guys question, what happened to Sam Squirrel's father in Mattimeo? He was in Redwall but then in Mattimeo it was just Jess. Did he die or did she leave him cause she was a lesbian or something like that? (I just always figured if someone had to be gay it was her for some reason). But I have no clue what happened to Mr. Squirrel...

I obsessively read all of the Redwall books because of how awesome Brian Jacques was at having multiple story lines going on at at once, and how he'd always have them work their way back together in the conclusion :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Jacques really must have loved eating, doesn't it seem like he spent pages and pages describing feasts? Elderberry wine and all that? It seems like he spent as much time describing foodstuffs as Tolkien did describing various geographic features.
