You should be careful however using WD-40 on households things, because contrary to popular belief, it's not a lubricant, it is a penetrating fluid (or a water displacer - that's what WD stands for - depending on how you look at it) So great for taking off rusty bolts but shouldn't really be used for things like door hinges.

locksmith here... people put that shit in their locks all the time and end up jamming them. if you put wd40 in your locks, I hope you snap your key off in the cylinder during those crucial moments you're trying to escape a lusty gorilla.

As a mechanic we sometimes get locks that are very hard to turn and wd-40 loosens them right up, what else would you recommend if that's not what's supposed to work?

Using WD40 to loosen a jammed lock is fine, but only if you intend to then clean that lock. WD40 attracts dust and will eventually cause the lock to jam again. For maintenance and cleaning of a lock, use a greaseless lubricant like LPS1

Lol as a mechanical engineer I just came here to say the exact thing as TheTrollingEffect (Possibly ironic). If used on door hinges and (despite many cries against it) bicycle gears and chains it is not a lubricant and will attract abrasive dust and particulate that could wear parts prematurely. If you want good lube, for metal parts not your girlfriend, use white lithium past for heavy shit or carbon based lubes such as Jigaloo for bikes and household items.

also: duck tape, not duct. It's waterproof tape, adhesive backed with PVC, you want foil tape for hvac

Duck Tape is a brand (though the origins of brand name probably came from the confusion with people calling it duck tape vs duct tape), duct tape is a generic term also known as PVC tape. It's not weatherproof, it begins to break down/harden in about a 6mos to a year and almost completely useless after about 5 years (depending on conditions). In most situations, PVC duct tape can never be used for hvac duct work. Aluminum/Metal tape is now used and holds up to the temp variations of the duct work and won't cause poisonous gas to be released during a fire.

As said in many other comments, WD-40 and PVC duct tape are not as useful for solutions and may cause more long term issues than people think.
