*carried :'(

[–]ellegood 46 points47 points ago

Will carry again, bringing the orbiters to various museums across the country.

[–]freedomonster 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

pfft Low Earth Orbit is overrated.

Deep space, here we go.

[–]MisterNetHead 6 points7 points ago

Pfff deep space blows.

30,000 feet, here we come!

:C

[–]tommytimbertoes 1 point2 points ago

Enough shuttles, back to REAL rockets!

[–]efg1342 20 points21 points ago

[–]DoodleVnTaintschtain 6 points7 points ago

I'd be interested if you had a link to go with that picture.

[–]theinklein 8 points9 points ago

I found some information, apparently it was an NOAA satellite.

[–]Piscator629[S] 3 points4 points ago

I found the final report. Even though it doesn't state it i bet a bunch of people lost their jobs. The satellite didn't launch for 6 years after that.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 4 points5 points ago

That's not the worst thing though, worst thing is the rocket blowing up. I was watching a program about the James Webb Telescope and how much work they have to do for the fancy mirrors, all I kept thinking was...damn it's gonna suck if the rocket blows up.

[–]eruisto 2 points3 points ago

Unfortunately, that's the danger of shooting things into space on giant missiles filled with liquid fire. Don't forget about the human lives lost, too.

[–]GBGiblet 0 points1 point ago

I watched that too, same thoughts, good program though

[–]theinklein 0 points1 point ago

I've gotta wonder how much of that was repaired and how much of it was simply rebuilt from scratch. I can't imagine that it's easy to repair damage like that and make sure it's still space-worthy.

[–]GilliamOS 5 points6 points ago*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOAA-19

The Wiki article on it is good .

[–]ieGod 4 points5 points ago

Wow. A $135 million fuck-up, with a loss of $30 million in profits for Lockheed Martin. All because of some bolts. You can bet your ass there were firings.

[–]chrisbooth12 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't be so sure. The sad thing is a lot of these jobs are so specialized they may not have a replacement

[–]GilliamOS 0 points1 point ago

And some impressive insurance claims.

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

...and my only goal is to destroy a rare supercar... I've set my standards a bit low, I guess.

[–]freedomonster 0 points1 point ago

uuuuuh...woopsie

[–]random_digital 42 points43 points ago

Usually labels like this are applied after there's been an incident...

[–]gilgoomesh 47 points48 points ago

Reminds me of the Simpsons quote:

Kent Brockman: If you have the fever, there's only one cure; take two tickets and see the game Sunday morning.

Voiceover: Warning: tickets should not be taken internally

Homer: See? Because of me, they have a warning.

[–]IamSparticles 13 points14 points ago

NASA are very proactive about this sort of thing.

[–]satanscondiments 11 points12 points ago

They actually understand and respect Murphy's Law. Plus, they're witty.

[–]sirhotalot 1 point2 points ago

Which way is down?

[–]trekkie00 3 points4 points ago

Towards the enemy's gate, obviously.

[–]reddit_user48 1 point2 points ago

This report is worth reading, not sure if its available to the public though... but trust me its there for a reason now

[–]GreenTeam 6 points7 points ago

This is probably buried in some SOP somewhere about warnings and directions.

[–]mecharedneck 1 point2 points ago

Probably on purpose. I has to write a procedure manual once and I put all sorts of stupid shit in there just to stay awake.

[–]time 17 points18 points ago

R2 speaks ENGLISH!!!! What is all the squeaking about in the movies then?!?

[–]lockest 19 points20 points ago

They were censoring out his swears.

[–]antidense 6 points7 points ago

I could tell you, but boop beep sweeeoooswee boop chirp beep beep

[–]hotchrisbfries 10 points11 points ago

He's like the robot Bill Cosby

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I read that in Cleveland's voice.

[–]DNZ_not_DMZ 0 points1 point ago

Aw man that cracked me up, cheers.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

It's not just NASA that has to idiot-proof their stuff. The military does it too.

[–]MEaster 1 point2 points ago

That would serve a use if you're setting it up in the dark, and there's nothing on the rear.

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

It's probably raised or embossed and I think the backside has no markings. This is going by hollywood and video games though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Hubby was deployed in the army so he can attest to the fact that they indeed look just like this. "Front Toward Enemy"

[–]GeneralDisorder 0 points1 point ago

Are they embossed on the label side and blank on the other?

[–]orangepotion 14 points15 points ago

Of course it says that, Cape Canaveral is in Florida.

[–]ScannerBrightly 2 points3 points ago

Not soon enough?

[–]orangepotion 2 points3 points ago

You know what? I apologize.

Today I was discussing the lack of moral fibre on our politicians and officials, that sooner consider their election chances than take the moral and ethical action; I was decrying the law that gives a person the ability to kill another without fear for repercussion; I was arguing about how the problem of racism is very much alive in the USA.

And then, in a moment of levity, I make light of the same issues in a joke that forgets, for a tragic second, that there is a family suffering right now, that the issues continue to be as grave and dangerous for the very fabric of this country, and that we all are possible victims of these same issues as long as we continue to construe our misguided nonconfrontational approach as a solution to our problems.

I do apologize.

[–]bantam83 3 points4 points ago

the law that gives a person the ability to kill another without fear for repercussion

Well that's certainly not bullshit hyperbole.

No, wait, that is exactly what that is.

[–]orangepotion 2 points3 points ago

Under this law somebody can come at you, and if you claim that you did fear for your life, that will be the end of that. The end of the other person as well.

Now reverse roles.

[–]bantam83 3 points4 points ago

Under this law somebody can come at you, and if you claim that you did fear for your life, that will be the end of that.

Citation needed.

[–]DoodleVnTaintschtain 3 points4 points ago

[–]bantam83 1 point2 points ago

You can make a simple citation of the law itself, but does that mean you understand it?

Quoting the law:

if he or she reasonably believes

Tell me, do you know what the legal definition of reasonable belief is?

[–]DoodleVnTaintschtain -1 points0 points ago

As a matter of fact, I do.

"Reasonably believes" is a reference to our old friend, the "reasonable man". The "reasonable man" is supposed to be an objective standard of reasonableness. In other words, you don't take aspects that are particular to the person in question; rather, you consider a hypothetical "reasonable person" in their place, and try to figure out what they would have done.

In practice, there will typically be two applications of this standard. First, the police will decide whether or not they consider the actions of the perpetrator to have been reasonable. The outcome of that decision will determine whether or not they arrest the perpetrator. Whether or not they decide to arrest him/her, there will still likely be a civil suit for wrongful death, and at that point, it's up to the jury to decide whether or not the (now) defendant acted reasonably.

[–]bantam83 5 points6 points ago

Well then you know that the characterization of the law in an earlier post is false and misleading.

[–]bantam83 1 point2 points ago

That's a nice bunch of links, but most of it is commentary that's not based on any case law. What case law is discussed includes examples like this:

An assistant medical examiner who conducted the autopsy said Concannon was shot four times, and that he might have been lunging at Jarkas when shot, as Jarkas testified.

So there was evidence that the guy was in a threatening pose (as given by the medical examiner) and the judge ruled on this fact. That's what 'reasonable' means, it doesn't mean "go out and kill anybody you want". That's a misconstrued, nonsensical straw man argument being presented by those who simply don't understand this law or law in general.

[–]freedomonster -1 points0 points ago

So what? It's ok to shoot someone if they 'lunge' at you? Even if he hits you, one can always walk away. As the ol' timers say, "back in my day, real men fought with their hands."

[–]bantam83 -1 points0 points ago

Because the weak and elderly can totally go toe-to-toe with anyone just as well, right?

[–]Piscator629[S] -3 points-2 points ago

I say Treyvon had every right to stand his ground from someone who was told by POLICE to not approach the subject. If they do not get good sound justice i predict there will be some pretty bad riots.

[–]chrisbooth12 0 points1 point ago

He did listen to the police. He stopped and walked back to his car and got jumped from behind and his nose broke

[–]irish711 0 points1 point ago

Riots? Not so much... also, he was told by the 911 dispatcher not to pursue Treyvon. Which is why he's not arrested for, at least, disobeying a direct order.

[–]Forever_Stoopit 2 points3 points ago

911 operators have no legal authority to give "direct orders" to anyone or anything other than their dog.

[–]dajuggernaut 2 points3 points ago

Except for the fact that florida was where the shuttle was taken off the 747, and not where they put it on.

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd 7 points8 points ago

I'm pretty sure that it is meant to be facetious.

[–]bananapeel 2 points3 points ago

I FINALLY got a copy of Jenkins 3rd edition. The other side says "Lefty Loosy, Righty Tighty" just like they said.

[–]Chairboy 0 points1 point ago

An awesome book, yes? The development history is amazing as well.

[–]blueshiftlabs 0 points1 point ago

You're now required to scan it in and post it, you know!

[–]bananapeel 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely. This weekend. Pinky swear.

[–]takatori 2 points3 points ago

Can't you wait like a week, at least?

Or at least post the other more rare picture of the misspelling on the other side?

[–]tiyx 5 points6 points ago

Always trying to keep a black man down.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

Beat me to it, Rodney.

[–]monkeyfett8 1 point2 points ago

This picture has always been in my top ten for the space shuttle program. I appreciate the little things sometimes. Makes it feel more obviously done my regular people.

[–]freecandy_van 0 points1 point ago

That flew about 1000' over my head when I was at the Cape, amazing.

[–]TheRealHortnon -1 points0 points ago

Hmmm didn't seem to be there when I saw it

[–]CubemonkeyNYC 0 points1 point ago

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/99/NASA%27s_Shuttle_Carrier_Aircraft_905_%28front%29_and_911_%28rear%29.jpg

It's there. Zoom in to the above linked image from wikipedia and look at the FAR plane, not the closer one. The two rear struts each have one of the little "sockets" in OP's image.

[–]TheRealHortnon 1 point2 points ago

No I mean the writing.

[–]CubemonkeyNYC 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps it's on the other side

[–]Pyro627 -3 points-2 points ago*

That's hilarious, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a photoshop. :(

[–]spacermase 8 points9 points ago

I've seen the shuttle carrier in person at Dryden Flight Research Center, and I assure you, this is most certainly real.

[–]Pyro627 -1 points0 points ago

It isn't? Awesome. Now I can be happy.

[–]Chairboy 3 points4 points ago

It is not. This photo is in Jenkins' Shuttle, a most excellent reference to all things OV.

[–]cookiegirl -1 points0 points ago

This is one of the greatest things I've seen on Reddit. Thank you.

[–]Piscator629[S] -3 points-2 points ago

Does that mean i get a cookie!!!!

[–]exdiggtwit 0 points1 point ago

A Karma Cookie.

[–]Twad_feu -5 points-4 points ago

Wait, what? Seriously? Must be an inside joke or something.. no one could screw that up.. right?

Pretty funny.

[–]addictedtomosh 25 points26 points ago

Of course it's a joke. It's quite common in the technical world to put serious sounding silly labels on stuff.

[–]mecharedneck 2 points3 points ago

Pshh, really. Looks like that guy's never seen a turbo-encabulator before.

[–]Piscator629[S] 2 points3 points ago

Or an Interositer.

[–]PirateMud 1 point2 points ago

Like "Eye protection must be worn" signs over the urinals.

[–]iheartbakon -1 points0 points ago

And yet in the non-technical world, there are some truly idiotic warning labels.

When I was working in a nightclub many moons ago, we had a product called "Powder-Dam" which was basically gelatin. We used it for soaking up vomit.

The label was entirely in English and one of the warnings read: "If you cannot read English, have someone who can read English to explain this label to you".

Being a Canadian, I'm used to bilingual labels, but this product was from the USA (only in Amerka LOL). Really, how hard is it to translate the product label to the language of your consumers?

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Coloneljesus 7 points8 points ago

that's the joke.
