It is not this.

This is the 3D shadow of a 4D hypercube.

No no no, don't feel bad. Just think about this, holds a light over a block and the shadow is just a square. A 3d object gives a 2d shadow. Now just try to imagine what object would cast a 3d shadow....it still blows my mind.

2d objects makes up a 3d object; like squares makes up a cube so a 4d object will look like a cube to us. Same with all other dimensional objects; 2 0 dimensional points makes a 1d line, four 1d line makes a 2d square, etc

You're almost there. A 3D object isn't precisely made of a 2D object as much as it is the next step of a 2D object being extruded in to an axis that is perpendicular to all other axes that have been extruded to. A 4D object, in this case a tesseract, is a cube that is extruded in to an extra axis that is perpendicular to the x,y, and z axes.

Have you seen Cube? This reminded me of Cube 2: Hypercube.

Cube isn't bad, thought it didn't make me want to watch the sequel.

I decided to watch the entire trilogy one day. Hypercube wasn't terrible, but Cube Zero was pretty bad.

No. 4th Dimension is Time. To get a glimpse of the dimensions, check out this video (I know, just turn off annotations) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkxieS-6WuA

Thank you for knowing this, It always bugs me to hear people saying that the "fourth dimension" is time, the fourth dimension can be whatever the hell we want it to be as long as its a dimension, the dimensions don't have to be in order. This is just an instance of the fourth dimension being one of space.

Technically time cannot be a dimension like length, width, and height because it is relative. With length, a meter is a meter is a meter. Obviously a meter is an arbitrary comparison to some rod held at some constant temperature somewhere, but the length will never change.

Time is NOT like this. We, as people one earth, could be instantaneously frozen for millions of years, come out of our freeze instantaneously and it would seem like nothing ever happened. If someone had started a stop watch before the freeze it would not read that millions of years had passed, it would continue counting where from where it was when in froze. The person holding it would be unable to discern that anything out of the ordinary had occurred, but to someone not on earth millions of years would have passed.

TL;DR Time is relative (duh) which is weird and makes it so it can't be considered a "dimension"

The same can be said about space, if all of Earth was teleported(using teleportation here because you are basically making all of humanity instantaneously jump through time by not experiencing the intervening years, essentially time travel.) two kilometers to the left, no one could tell the difference. Also, this model only works if the Earth is the only thing in the universe, there are reference points like other stars or other planets that are easily measurable to notice the jump in time or space. The only way to truly make it unnoticeable would be to teleport/time-freeze the entire universe at once, which would do nothing at all thanks to relativity, in both cases.

Saw that Youtube comment... have to ask.

Did Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith speak like this as homage to Carl Sagan?

Just curious...

I thought I knew before seeing that thing.

To all of you dumbasses who are saying time is the 4th dimension, and to all of you dumbasses who are saying time is not the 4th dimension. Maybe you all should actually attempt to educate yourselves before you blabber more filth from your bong holes.

The 10 Dimensions

(Also redditors, just cause Carl Sagan says something doesn't mean its true. He's awesome and smart and all, but hes not that great. While he is well known for his work in the planetary sciences, he is much more famous from his work as a narrator and activist. You all circle jerk all over him constantly, we fucking get it)
