This is from a young adult novel called Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. It is set in a alternate, steampunk version of World War 1. Definitely worth checking out!

[–]Antebios 6 points7 points ago

Movie plot/story line was kinda sucky, but action and cinematography were excellent.

[–]joe19d 1 point2 points ago

I Agree.

[–]QueueNX 1 point2 points ago

Reminded me of "The Dark Crystal" actually

[–]OccamsAxe 1 point2 points ago

I liked this movie, even if only for the sexually attractive girls fighting undead Nazis and orcs. The story was a little weak, I thought.

[–]Cipherisoatmeal 0 points1 point ago

Remindes me of Killzone.

[–]aereuske 2 points3 points ago

I'd been considering this book for a while since Westerfeld collaborates closely with John Green (at least John recommends him in his books), but since I now have an actual recommendation, I'll totally pick it up next time I'm out.

[–]JaggerA 2 points3 points ago

As a young adult (18), I really enjoy his novels, both for the plot and the writing style. I'd highly recommend his novel So Yesterday and the Uglies series.

[–]sarkule 1 point2 points ago

The Leviathan series is good, but more focused on young teens than anything else, but still a really good read!

[–]beneathsands 2 points3 points ago

The art is by Keith Thompson

[–]stilettopanda 0 points1 point ago

I knew I'd seen this before, just couldn't put my finger on it.

[–]MasterWizard 6 points7 points ago

Now you can put your finger all over it.

[–]mindbane -2 points-1 points ago

I came here to post this very thing. I just finished reading the book last week definitely worth one's time.

[–]metabun 23 points24 points ago

Slightly higher res: 1600x1311

[–]in_omplete[S] 5 points6 points ago

Thanks for the higher resolution.

[–]kraeftig 3 points4 points ago

And please put the res in the title...

[–]AzureBlu 13 points14 points ago

Does a 1920x1080 version exist? Want :)

[–]joe19d 1 point2 points ago

a troll?

[–]wildebeest11 6 points7 points ago

but what are those things supposed to be?

[–]Toasterlad 2 points3 points ago

Classic looking trolls.

[–]Maxwiell 2 points3 points ago*

Old Swedish trolls. Also known as "John Bauer trolls" after their creator. He's famous for creating the imagery of so much Swedish folklore that his paintings, now a 100 years after his death, still are the standard icons that people think of first when mentioning trolls, goblins, gnomes and dark forests in Sweden. Also very fitting timewise since the image in my link above really was painted during WWI.

Switzerland: Forever Neutral

[–]Tachyx 0 points1 point ago

In order to remain truly neutral, you must pack a gun?

[–]YesImSardonic 0 points1 point ago

Actually, yeah.

[–]scrufdawg 0 points1 point ago

Either pack a gun to defend yourself or be overrun. Common sense, dude.

[–]sangimed 6 points7 points ago

Very expresive wallpaper indeed thanks for sharing it :)

[–]in_omplete[S] 1 point2 points ago

My pleasure.

[–]iamUberPro 0 points1 point ago

how much did it actually cost?

[–]frekulz1400 5 points6 points ago

In my freshman writing class we were assigned to write a ten page research paper on a map. I ended up finding this on StumbleUpon and wrote my paper on it. It's really cool to look at all the detail in the map.

[–]frekulz1400 1 point2 points ago

I can work on getting the paper but one thing I do remember talking about is the symbolism. Cheesy, I know, but think about why Russia is a bear, England a Lion, and Germany mechanized. I found a lot of real maps that use the same type of techniques and in some cases even stereotypes. http://bibliodyssey.blogspot.com/2008/08/dogs-of-war.html There's a link with a bunch of WWI propaganda maps that I used in the paper as a real life comparison.

[–]ceejiesqueejie 4 points5 points ago

I'm making this my desktop just because I want to study this further... This is amazing!

[–]Henan 3 points4 points ago

Haha check Holland and Denmark

[–]I_DRINK_PERIOD_BLOOD 3 points4 points ago

It makes me wish my computer screen was a complete square.

[–]PenguinTricycle 2 points3 points ago

Parrotugal made me laugh

[–]JohnHood 1 point2 points ago

Can you explain, I don't get it... (Portugal being a parrot, not the "Parrotugal")

[–]nanners-la 8 points9 points ago

This is from a novel by Scott Westerfeld. It depicts an alternative, steam punk WWI time period where the warring sides are the Darwinist, who are able to genetically engineer animals for different purposes, and the Clankers, who have advanced mechanical technology. Countries with animals are Darwinists, countries with mechanical themes are the Clankers. Good read, I highly recommend it.

[–]throwaway6719 0 points1 point ago

the pun is the joke.

[–]khthon 0 points1 point ago

Quite the stretch in the use of puns. Parrotugal... and it doesn't look at all like a parrot. Looks like a hawk.

[–]DiaperParty 3 points4 points ago

The penises attacking Germany were a dealbreaker for me.

[–]Tachyx 0 points1 point ago

[–]rabc 2 points3 points ago

You can buy a printed version here: http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/grandmap.html

[–]ussapollon 1 point2 points ago

I don't know what "Clancer" means. Not sure if I want to. (German redditor here)

[–]joe19d 5 points6 points ago

its Clanker.. im going to associate that with metal and it probably has something to do with steam punk based off MasterWizzard's post. Seeing as how its from the novel he mentioned.

[–]Antwhan 4 points5 points ago

The Clankers from what I understand went with machines while the Darwinists went with bioengineering for their warmachines.

I haven't read the books but it has looked really cool.

[–]youstolemyname 5 points6 points ago

Machines make a "clank" sound when metal hits metal.

[–]damnshoes 1 point2 points ago

Is there a WW2 version of this? What about now?

[–]T4llAgent 0 points1 point ago

This was for a book, and he's not writing any about WWII, so I don't think so. Though, that would be cool...

[–]lumdumpling 1 point2 points ago

very neat :)

[–]Annoyance1 1 point2 points ago

Russia's not looking too good...

[–]inormallyjustlurkbut 1 point2 points ago

Every time I see this picture, the art makes me think of Brian Froud(of The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, etc).

He does stuff like this.

[–]Abbithedog 0 points1 point ago

Hey, those good guys from the dark crystal are hiding in northern europe!

[–]xZedakiahx 0 points1 point ago

xpost this to steam/dieselpunk?

[–]kasmith2020 0 points1 point ago

I've scrolled past this 4 times today and had to double take every time. Norway is a penis. Sweden is also a different looking penis.

Leviathan for the win!

[–]svenseger 0 points1 point ago

He's got Finland all wrong. Finland in two wars with USSR. The first one, the Winterwar, was the one where USSR attacked Finland, they got repelled and the war ended with Finland giving away a part of its territories to USSR in 1939. The second war, "Jatkosota" as in "the following war" Finland attacked in hopes of regaining its territories, equipped with German machinery AND troops under the command of Mannerheim. Finland got back some of its territories but as the only ally, Germany, was losing its war Finland had to make truce and lost Karjala.

Do not get me wrong, being an ally with Germany did not make Finland jew-hating Nazis. It was the same kind of pact US had with the USSR. It was a necessary one considering the circumstances.

So in short, Finland was NOT an ally with the USSR.

[–]GavinZac 0 points1 point ago

Expressive of what, exactly?

And what the hell is Ireland supposed to be?
