Actually, they are Malinois - smaller and lighter than GSD's, and the breed now predominantly used in police work.

What part is abusive? I can understand questioning the morality of sending a dog in to risk its life, but I've spoken with people who train dogs for security and I can assure you that those dogs LOVE their work. They see it as a game, and the dogs see being tossed around as fun, positive encouragement. Same with the batons they use in training, they aren't hitting the dog so much as rewarding and encouraging him. They've been trained to know that the batons mean they're doing their job correctly, so to the dogs it is a good thing.

Former training handler here, I can confirm those dogs live for it. Trained correctly, to them it's a big game and a way to channel working breeds massive amounts of energy and drives. The Malinois I trained for 4 years LOVED kids and would romp with them in the yard for hours, but later went on to save his police handler multiple times.

As the owner of two Belgian Malinois, I can confirm that they fucking love what they do. Mine were never trained to patrol the yard and keep things out of it, but they do anyway. It's instinct and they love it.

[–]HungryHungryHebrew 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, I think that the dog may have just got over excited or confused and thought he was still at the "victim". It may have been because of the rolling around they did

[–]KingNick 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most definitely not animal abuse. I don't like it when people throw that word around, especially when it comes to Dogs. Dogs are some of the most resilient Domesticated Animals around. You're calling him spinning the dog around like that "Animal Abuse"? Thats actually how most Guard/Attack K-9s strengthen their Jaw Muscles (by grabbing a rope that's about 6 feet off the ground, clamping their jaws on it, and swinging back and forth).

When you're training a Dog to be in part of a unit such as this, you treat it like a partner/family...not like a meek pet. Your partner messes up? You pop him/her in the nose or side. If you think that causes your buddy immense pain...you don't know dogs.

looks like he grabbed him by the harness. I dont' think he hurt the dog, probably just had to shake him up a bit and show a bit of dominance to get him back in the domesticated mindset. It may be kind of a game for the dog, but I think they also know when it's real shit.

[–]B1Gpimpin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought that was odd too, but at the end he's petting his dog on the head so he must love him right???

[–]kennerly 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those dogs are just super amped when they take a man down. They can't help it if they get a little excited and bite their handler, that's why he wears that padding in the first place. If the dog was really trying to bring him down he wouldn't have let go when he realized who it was. The bond they form with their handler is extremely close and he is the only one who can pull the dog off when it has a suspect in its jaws.

I was accosted by two ne'er do wells. One set their staffy dog on me, I let it get a good grip on my sleeve and then ran at the guy with his dog in the air in front of me as a shield. Guy ran off. Felt so badass until I checked my pockets and found I'd had my phone robbed by the other one before they ran. But was uninjured and still had my wallet. I have some damage to my sleeve I get to use telling my story.

Also my friend killed a police dog that was trying to take him down, grabbed it's back lags and snapped it in half over his knee and got away - poor thing.

Really? It looks like the guy is shooting at the dog.

[–]Sniper_Guz 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Who knows. Maybe he is (using blanks) but they need to create as genuine an environment as possible for the dog to buy it, I guess.

[–]Acidictadpole 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This jives, you want the dog to expect the bangs on the way in (unfortunately), instead of being scared by the loud noises like most dogs are.

It pains me to think that they send in dogs to someone with a live weapon pointed in the same direction, and teach the dogs to charge in fearlessly :(

[–]ikarios 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then again it's much more difficult to shoot a charging dog than it is to shoot a person.

[–]Sir_Richfield 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true, but you must be rather cold blooded to take careful aim at a dog that's charging you. I know my reaction would be "ohshitohshitohshit" and I wouldn't hit the side of a house with a gun.
I think psychology is part of this, too.

[–]Acidictadpole 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh definitely. I'm sure it's all part of the tactic of letting the dog loose. As soon as you know that the target has seen the dog, you can probably spring up and start your approach which will throw him off, and into more panic.

[–]Moarbrains 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Give it a little cover fire and it will be fine.

[–]ofsinope 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They won't shoot at the same time they're using dogs. One is lethal force, the other is non-lethal.

[–]Moarbrains 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess, but have you seen instances where they would use non-lethal force to take on a gunman?

They seem pretty complementary to me.

[–]Coloneljesus 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, In many wars of the past, the same was done with humans. The enemy dug in, shooting at you and your order was to charge him. Was probably even worse, because you knew exactly that you're going to die.

Not saying it's absolutely ok to do with a dog.

[–]SilenceIsGolder 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting that this is probably much closer to the original reason that humans sought canine companions than for funny pictures on the internet.

[–]aheadwarp9 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kinda looks like he is shooting to the right a bit... and they are definitely blanks if this is a training exercise as some in this thread have mentioned. If it was a real situation I would have expected the gunman to fight back against the dog a bit more, maybe even try to shoot it with his gun (if he didn't drop it in the attack).

[–]FinnTheFickle 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]aheadwarp9 7 points8 points ago

Police Dogs are one of the biggest assets that they have at their disposal for non-lethal take-downs.

[–]Jonthrei -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, a dog's first instinct is to go for the throat, which is very lethal. I wonder how effectively they can train that out of them.

If the dog got pissed off (like if he was shot coming in), I imagine he'd go for the throat no matter how well trained he was.

[–]aheadwarp9 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You might be surprised at how well trained these dogs are... if you think having bacon in your pocket will help you, you're wrong.

[–]bpmartin 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is why you see german shepherds and malinois' as police takedown dogs they have been bred for generations to bite extremities first, it's been bred into their DNA to be subdue-rs not killers. Obviously if police wanted a dog with the best possible bite they would be using pitbulls but unfortunately unlike malinois and shepherds, humans have been breeding pitbulls to kill so they would be very hard to train.

[–]Sevsquad -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No not really, dogs instinctively disable before a kill it's a lot easier to kill a moose if all it's being held down by a pack of 7 wolves than if it's just one hanging off of it's neck like a goiter. If it was a cheetah you'd be right but because dogs are pack animals they don't really need to be lethal every attack.

Unless they're bred for it like pit-bulls or smaller dogs (which hunt more like cats).

When I first saw this I thought the guy looked a little bit dramatic as he fell down, now that I watch the rest of the video and see the padded jacket he is wearing it makes more sense. If this had been a real criminal getting taken out by a dog, it would have been awesome to see.

[–]BringFire 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes a lot more sense. I was thinking the police were far too quick to surround a guy still holding a live firearm.

[–]myztry -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only reason not to come in firing once he went down at that range would be to not hit the dog.

[–]MEANL3R 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone pointed out earlier, they wouldn't shoot. The purpose of the dog is to be non-lethal. If they wanted to go lethal, they wouldn't need the dog, they would just open fire. So you're right, they would never fire with a dog in action.

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 0 points1 point ago

I remember when I was in the army and we were introduced, briefly, to the dogs the MP's use and holy shit those things are pure pain and dismemberment running on four legs.

We had to go against the dog and I can tell you it is well scary to face a big, growling German Shepard, ready to leap at you. In the end the officer with us (not the the dog-handler) said that in his opinion it is more humane to shoot a man in an extremity (put a single bullet in there that is) than let a "fur missile" (as he called them) tear a limb to pieces.

Frightening yet respectable beasts they are.

[–]Sparticus2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My dad has been in law enforcement for the vast majority of his life and thus my life and he's told me stories about how he'd be chasing down someone or someone wouldn't come out quietly. He told me the easiest way to get them to cooperate was to threaten sending in the dog. Most people realize the power of these dogs. German shepherds were bad enough. German Shepherds are more intimidating than Malinois, but they're not as fast, not as smart, and they can't jump like that. I've had malinois for about ten years now and understand that if you want a dog to keep you safe, they're the best you can get. They just require a lot of attention.

Theoretical situation with police dogs, and probably a dumb question:

If the person being attacked by the dog actually kills/wounds the dog, does it factor into sentencing or does the police department go after the perp/victim financially somehow?

I ask because if I was ever attacked by a police dog, you better believe I would be scared for my life and would be trying to gouge its eyes out/shoot/stab it with my free hand

[–]kropserkel 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In a most places, law enforcement dogs are treated the same as officers. Meaning intentionally harming or killing them will receive harsher punishment than typical animal cruelty charges, in the same way that assaulting a police officer will land you a harsher sentence than assaulting any random guy.

[–]StaticE -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's pretty horrible

[–]bpmartin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whoever violates division (A) of this section is guilty of assaulting a police dog or horse. Except as otherwise provided in this division, assaulting a police dog or horse is a misdemeanor of the second degree. If the violation results in the death of the police dog or horse, assaulting a police dog or horse is a felony of the third degree. If the violation results in serious physical harm to the police dog or horse other than its death, assaulting a police dog or horse is a felony of the fourth degree. If the violation results in physical harm to the police dog or horse other than death or serious physical harm, assaulting a police dog or horse is a misdemeanor of the first degree.

Considering well trained police dogs can cost in the $10,000-$15,000 range they take it pretty seriously.

[–]Sparticus2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most places they're seen as officers of the law. You'd be better off taking the punishment that they are trained to give you than trying to fight back. Resisting against a police dog is like resisting against an officer.

Except those dogs ran and jumped two stories up to bite me. I specifically went up there to hide from them but nooo.. those were some kind of nazi catdogs or something. Maybe zombie dogs since they could take a sniper bullet to the head and walk it off.

A few years ago in Phoenix Arizona, there was a hostage situation where a shithead was holding a woman in a car with a knife while cops tried to "talk him down". Something happened, prompting the handler to release the dog. When it was over, the dog had bitten off the man's kneecap . . . . and ate it. <shudders>

This is a training exercise (just so you know). He's wearing a bite suit.

(Not trying to sound like a dick. My dad was a K-9 officer for years and I've been the one wearing the jacket ಠ_ಠ )

if you think about it, this dog has the best job in the world... He gets to do what he loves, Hurt people and save the day. I bet they even pay him in back massages and doggy treats.. what a lucky guy.
