True, after all dogs don't understand the consequences of such an act and therefore are dumb enough to take the risk. We're just using them to risk their lives as they're deemed less important than a human's.

Sometimes, though, animals deliberately risk their lives to save some other's without expecting a treat, this just isn't the case.

My childhood Newfie dog could not come swimming with us for this very reason. She automatically assumed that anyone in the water was drowning.

It would actually cause her stress (and confusion) when we'd go right back into the water after she'd already "saved" someone.

Our dog growing up (an English Mastiff) would do the same thing! Poor guy would look physically distressed any time we'd wear our swimsuits and jump in and swim around us until we grabbed onto him and he'd paddle us to the stairs.
