Yeah, it would have been great if he'd kept a diary through the conflict. Basically each entry for every hour of most days would be 'got another one.'

Whoever put those figures on a picture apparently didn't read the Wiki entry for it: It was 346,500 against 998,100 men. Not to say that's not a glorious victory to only lose 11% of the battleground. But it's significantly different to 250,000 vs 1,500,000 men. Furthermore, the casualties were 25,904 dead or missing against 126,875 dead or missing.

Finally: wtf is this doing in r/funny?

[–]confusedwithenglish 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

actually the numbers are disputed, with some estimates of Russian deaths around the million mark, what you're saying is not fact, but one of the estimates. The number is more likely somewhere in the middle, or maybe the million mark, Soviets lied to their own people about how many we're dying trying to take Finland.

[–]fortalyst 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Regardless - the three resources cited for the Finnish numbers all appear to agree that the number of men for Finland is ~40% more than what's stated in the image

[–]SenorFreebie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a classic weird demotivator but usually comes with better headlines. Also, I'm fairly sure the exact point you're raising was probably raised the first time this got posted ... well before Reddit even existed. This was one of the early wikipedia amazement meme's ... and from the sounds of it, it inspired some historically minded (or biased) people to dig through the sources and get the article into better shape.

[–]iPwnnn 4 points5 points ago

That's actually a good question. Probably just to get more views. And I can some people might find a brutal war funny. Or something?

[–]Graptoi 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Winter War is actually where the Molotov Cocktail got it's name and the first time it was used in a major engagement (It first saw use in the Spanish Civil War). It was found to be very effective against the Soviet T-28 tank because it burned off the treads and left them immobile and vulnerable. In the early stages of the war Finland converted its distilleries over to, what amounted to being, molotov cocktail factories where they mass produced the simple mixture of kerosene/petrol and added tar. The tar allowed it to cling to surfaces as well as create a cloud of dirty smoke to obscure vision and cause confusion and panic as the tank crew abandoned the vehicle.

[–]justcauseofit 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

An anecdote from my grade 11 history teacher. The Molotov Cocktail was invented in the Winter War. Molotov was the foreign minister for the USSR at the time, and the Fins would throw the Molotovs at tanks and yell 'This is for you Molotov' or something equally romantic that would appeal to 16-year old history students.

[–]hwytothedangerzone 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not quite. While the Russians were bombing Finnish civilians Molotov claimed that they were just dropping bread baskets to the "starving Finns". After this the Finns started calling these weapons they had "Molotov cocktails" because they wanted to offer him drinks after giving out so much food.

[–]Clydeicus 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

90% of things shouted in wars are shouted to appeal to 16-year-old history students. They died to impress you. Think about that, next time you're falling asleep in history class!

Sweden helped in secret though, made ambushes and such. awesome stuff.

[–]notavalidusername 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, totally awesome, right. Swedish military operations to support Finland were so secret no one ever noticed or found out about them! King Gustav even made a public statement in which he confirmed having declined Finnish pleas for support from Swedish troops. He must have done it to fool the Soviets!

[–]SenorFreebie 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And I suppose that's what Sweden was doing when it 'helped' ignore the German's marching across their territory into Norway. The great shame exists for a reason and I'm quick to bring it up with any Swede who forgets it.

[–]iigloo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really a great shame imo. They Swedish government did what it was supposed to do: It protected the people of Sweden and staying "neutral" was crucial in this. It might look bad, but the alternative was a full-blown invasion from Germany and ultimately states back then had to focus on their own survival. To shame the WWII Swedish government for this is rather childish and comes of as un-informed.

[–]SenorFreebie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh you're just fearmongering. German invasions are nothing. Just ask the Norwegians! And the Poles. And the Czech's, Soviets, Belgians, Dutch, French, Egyptians, Yugoslavian's, Greeks and Cretians(sp?). Nothing I tell you.

The iconic nature though of turning their heads as the German's attacked their friends across the border ... and supplying quality steel to the German war machine is pretty hard to overcome.

The Fins would bait the Russians into charges across explosive laiden frozen lakes. When the optimal amount of Russians/armor were exposed boom and to the bottom they went.

[–]TomWestern123 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In 1941 Great Britain was allied with the USSR and subsequently had an obligation to got to war with the Finnish (However, the Brits did not attack Finland in any way, they were just being polite to the Russians) and it is arguably the only time a state of war has existed between two fully fledged democratic nations.

[–]SuperSpaze 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those numbers are tweaked once in a while, but what is well documented is that finland was expected to lose its independence and become a soviet in the ussr. That did not happen.

[–]SenorFreebie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The error has since been corrected from the looks of it. The actual figures seem to be something like 350k vs. 1 million ... keeping in mind that the million would've been amongst the Soviet's better equipped, their mobile invasion force.

So yeah ... wikipedian's have looked at the sources with enthusiasm on this one and corrected the details since this meme first began half a decade ago. But I kind of respect Finland for being the only democracy on the Axis side ... and surviving.

[–]confusedwithenglish 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

finland wasn't on the axis side, and we had our own war with the Germans after the continuation war, called the Lapland war, which took part In The northern part of the country after the Russia business was finished.

[–]SenorFreebie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Effectively ... they were. But we have to remember carefully here that the allied side wasn't particularly friendly to pseudo neutral countries. They put immense pressure on Ireland, invaded Iran and would've done the same to Switzerland and Sweden if they could reach them.

Didn't know about attacking the German's in Finland. Props to Finland. Next time I run into some Finnish I won't constantly troll them on how they were effectively Nazi's in the war. I already recognised that they were kind of forced to the Axis side ... but never let a Finn know it. Now I can congratulate them for going after the 2 most despotic regimes of 20th century Europe!

[–]hwytothedangerzone 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

..on how they were effectively Nazi's in the war.

I can't believe anyone would think anything like that. First of all there is a big difference between The Wehrmacht (german military) and the nazi party. If you fought in the Iraq war during bush, did you fight in a republican army? No. The germans weren't fighting in a nazi army either (except for the SS).

The Finns had nothing to do with the nazis. They only received help from the german military as other countries such as sweden refused help. Finnish jews fought alongside german troops in Finland and at that time most people (including the Finnish goverment) didn't know anything about concentration camps etc.

[–]SenorFreebie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't actually think that. I do that a little bit to troll Finn's. They're easy to troll, especially in person. First off, I speak a few words in Ukrainian and convince them I was born there. Then I tell them about how Sweden should feel their great shame strongly but that Finland is even worse (even though I believe it was all just terrible circumstances forced on Scandanavia). It gets some great reactions. I wouldn't do it to someone who actually experiences this era. I once met a Finnish born woman whose former house is now in Russia ... I listened quietely to her war stories and asked polite questions.

But with young people ... it's ok to have a little fun.

[–]hwytothedangerzone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OK now I know you are trolling me. Nobody is that stupid. Finland isn't even in scandinavia.

[–]SenorFreebie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My bad actually. It's genuinely not considered part of Scandinavia? I'm on the other side of the planet ... only been to the region(s?) three times and twice was just to pass through Helsinki airport ... so I can't really profess to be a geographical expert.

[–]SenorFreebie -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, just checked, while 'typically' it's wrong to refer to Finland as part of Scandinavia, in English, it's not exclusively wrong.

[–]confusedwithenglish 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My grandfather was a Finnish Jew, fought along side Germans, they had a field synagogue. 4 Finnish Jews were awarded German medals and turned them down.

[–]SenorFreebie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I say effectively Nazi's it's deliberately false. As I said ... they were forced to pick sides. Pretty unfortunate geo-political situation to be in. Certainly not as bad a position as Poland was in (or Czechoslovakia, or Ukraine) but they were caught between the bad guys and the soft bad guys. I feel good that those Jews were in a position to turn something like that down.

[–]vVvMaze 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ah Alrighty. my apologizes for not knowing the history of every country in the world. But generally speaking Finland minds its own business in the context that they are not imperialist nor do they try to impose political will over other nations. And my statement was meant as a compliment for Finland. Naturally every country was involved in fighting at some point in its existence.

[–]hwytothedangerzone 0 points1 point ago
