Awe, I named my dog mochi and some huskies tried to eat her. That was unlucky. $1500 later, even when I was couch surfing, i never regretted that debt. Only regretted not getting enough info on guy who let it happen...

I named my cat Mochi. One of my favorite cats. Died after about 3 years. Disappeared for a few days. We put signs around the neighborhood looking for her. About a week or so later, we found a black trash bag near our fence. I think she was hit by a car or something, but she was bloody with bits of skull showing. It was a sad sight to see. Part of me wishes I didn't see it, but part of me feels better knowing that there was some closure. She still had that red collar. I wanted to keep it to remember her, but I buried her with it instead. I couldn't give her a lot, but I figured that was something she should keep instead.

Edit: Strange thing was that within a year, her brother, who my girlfriend at the time had, also died. He was found on the side of her house, lying in the grass, not moving. We suspect he ate anti-freeze or something and was poisoned. Either way, seemed strange for the siblings to die so soon after another.

Yeah, I'm so tired of that onion meme. I know the majority aren't even teary eyed when they post that, it's just a pathetic grab for fake points on the internet.

The only reservation I have about this pic is I've consistently seen people say that the guy drugs his dogs to keep them in that position for donations. I don't know if it's true or not but... it really taints the pic when you're looking at it and that thought is weighing in the back of your mind.

He isn't wasting drugs on the dog.

[–]is_this_trickery 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, my assumption was always that homeless people with dogs are going for attention. I have a dog and I love her to death but if I became impoverished I'd do my best to get her into the hands of someone that could actually care for her, I wouldn't bring her into whatever hell I was about to enter.

[–]Averyphotog 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

THINK about it for a minute. A dog does NOT want to be left alone all day while you to go away to work so you can afford a lovely house or apartment. A dog doesn't give a shit about that. If you had nowhere to go and had to sleep on the street, your dog would sleep right next to you and be the happiest dog in the whole world because he/she gets to spend every minute of every day with YOU.

[–]space1in 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree. having your dog with you is about companionship. not about money. If you are going through hell, it will be that less scary for having someone by your side, and what better creature is there to have with you than a dog who isn't judging.

[–]is_this_trickery 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's pretty selfish. Sure it's better for you, but how is it better for the dog?

[–]space1in 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes, there are a lot of different perspectives on this, which is interesting. I guess I just have a different feeling after having seen some third world dogs with mange and having terrible people kicking them in the street. I just feel happy that at least these dogs are loved.

[–]hautecouture78 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your dog might be happy that way for a while. Until you can't afford to feed him everyday, since you can barely feed yourself. And you can't afford flea and tick medication so the dog becomes invested with pests. And their fur becomes matted with dirt since you have nowhere to bathe them. Yeah, living on the street with yore dog sounds much better than a house...

[–]deliverusfromEVI 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to volunteer at an animal shelter, and on the rare occasion that a homeless person gave up their dog, the dog was usually better fed and groomed and cared for than most of the other animals we got in. They really do love their pets.

[–]is_this_trickery 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How many people that genuinely love and care for their dog and also have the means to take care of it would put them in an animal shelter? Where do most of your other animals come from? The streets, from bad households? I mean, my dog is perfectly well taken of, and no, you're not going to see my perfectly well taken care of dog in an animal shelter anytime soon, and I suspect it's the same for most dogs like that. Unless I'm missing something, that's not a convincing argument for me.

[–]is_this_trickery 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's because a dog is ignorant to things like having a roof over its head and food every day. If it's happy it's because it doesn't know how things could be better.

But hey, if you would rather that dogs sit next to homeless owners all day, only getting fed for a majority of its meals rather than all of its meals, getting soaking wet every time it rains, and having to endure hot summers and cold winters, then I'll let you be the one sign that petition. But me, I'm pretty happy knowing my dog is safe, comfortable, well-fed, and actually gets to run around and play instead of accompanying my nothing all day.

[–]octophetus 4 points5 points ago*

I always see this picture, or one like it, and inevitably some place in the comments one or more people say something about animal abuse (dietary, physical), only using the pet to get attention, or something of that matter. I haven't read through the comments this particular posting, but I'm sure some are down there. I've finally decided to weigh in.

I don't know what it might be like in other parts of the country, I am in Minnesota, but here I have had many homeless friends with dogs. And I can tell you that I've personally seen these individuals rather feed their dogs than themselves if it comes down to it. They don't keep the dog around neglectfully just to garner attention. I know that sometimes people have conceded that they are unable to take care of their dog. But like normal human beings, when the going gets tough they don't just give up their best friend. Of course people like it when you have a dog, and that's definitely a plus. But you should think of it as dog's paying their way on the road with cuteness, not as a malicious and neglectful business strategy.

I would completely honestly say that dog neglect is roughly comparable or less in the homeless community than outside of it. For the working population, many dogs go the majority of the day missing their owners, some even being chained up outside the majority of the day, not to mention serious cases of abuse.

Please do not assume that when a homeless person has a dog, that it is somehow being neglected. It is like assuming that any individual you meet's dog is neglected. And if you're truly worried about whether they are getting enough food, well, that is why they're panhandling.

/endrant. I just wanted to chime in on this issue that inevitably comes up in these posts.

This is not sweet, this is sad. Sad that the man is on the streets, sad that the poor dog doesn't have adequate food and shelter, sad that this whole situation even exists.

We should work to alleviate poverty, not whimper and pine at how cute the dog is.

[–]heimdal77 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ya sweet isn't the word i use for seeing a homeless man and his dog cuddled up together under a blanket trying not freeze to death. Also if you consider there is a good chance they both eating the dog food as a meal..

[–]Anesthesiakk 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The dog might be fed adequately. There's a very large can of Pedigree dog food in the photo. People, at least in my city, often will buy homeless people with dogs dog food. I've done it numerous times. And I know if I was homeless feeding my dog would definitely be my priority.

[–]MisterMeat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a lot of sympathy for homeless people but none for ones with dogs. I actually have more sympathy for homeless people with drug and alcohol problems because there is a physical aspect to that addiction. The dog is using up their obviously extremely limited resources and they should be making the decision to let it go and try and improve their standard of living until they can actually afford a pet. It is selfish and cruel to make an animal live on the street because you are lonely. If I were a homeless person my priority would be on becoming not homeless not on subjecting another living being to my own absolute poverty.

[–]Anesthesiakk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree wholeheartedly. But if something happened to me that caused me to be homeless I'd be heart broken to get rid of my dog. I'd have to do it, but it would definitely kill me. That being said.. there are tons of dogs in the shelters in my city, so sometimes they won't take anymore.

I've posted this before and it really depends on your area. Keep dried dog food and grain human food (cereal, bread, etc) in the trunk of your car. When you see someone who clearly needs help, give it to them. I do this instead of giving them cash that way I know, even if the homeless person wanted money for drugs or booze, the animal and/or that person have the option to eat something if they choose to.

[–]Vinzcoater 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While the subjects of this photograph do seem to be true companions, there is nothing that enrages me more than panhandlers with pets. I realize there are people out there for whom a life of dereliction and poverty is not a choice, and my heart goes out to them. But for each legitimate charity case out there, a far greater number of professional vagrants seek to occupy this societal niche voluntarily. They are not physically handicapped, mentally ill, or otherwise incapable of performing work as a means of support. They possess an astonishing unwillingness to generate income through any effort of their own. They shamelessly prey on the naivety, kindness and generosity of their fellow humans. Perhaps they are addicted to hard spirits or other drugs. Maybe they have had bad luck or made poor decisions. Possibly they are just lazy or rebellious. Whatever chip they have on their shoulder is their business. I am utterly unconcerned with the decision of some conscienceless lowlife to live under a bridge drinking hooch and smoking ice. It doesn't perturb me that they are able to manage this lifestyle by manipulating the hearts of the sincere. It is likely that many who serve as benefactors of the destitute might even receive a measure of emotional fulfillment in exchange for their acts of compassion. I am a bit bothered, however, that as an effect of the selfishness of the sane and able-bodied beggars of choice, a considerable percentage of the resources donated by the altruists of the world does not reach the minority that truly cannot function in society at any level. But the thing I find sickening is the conscription of innocent animals into this miserable and unnecessary living situation. It is unforgivable, in my opinion, to use another creature as a tool to exploit the sympathy of good people. People have the right to live their lives as uselessly as they choose, but to involve an animal in such an idiotic endeavor is despicable. When I see the same guy, squatting along the same off-ramp, with the same sign asking for dog-food money that I saw three months ago, but with a different puppy, I feel hate. If you can't feed yourself, how could you possibly care for a pet? And what happened to the previous one? Sorry to rant. As I said, the pair in the picture seem to be loyal to one another, and I do find that touching.

TL/DR: How you choose to squander your life is up to you, but please don't drag animals along your bad trip with you.

Note the tin of dog food on the left.

People are moaning about the dog not being cared for. It's obviously not in ideal conditions, but so what? It's unlikely the guy stole the dog from a family or took it from a shelter. Chances are he found it walking around, gave it some food and sat around waiting for somebody to come along and claim ownership, nobody did so he decided it would be okay to set off on his own business with the dog following him (which it would, because he gave it food).

Feeding the dog isn't hard. They can usually manage by themselves anyway but with a human to help things are much easier. The tramp will scavenge for human-friendly food and give questionable food to his little buddy. If he's running short, he can walk into a butchers and ask them for a bag of bones (which they will always do).

So letting a tramp care for a dog is clearly better than letting the dog live alone without a home. The bigger question is whether these dogs should be euthanised instead of living a life where they may suffer a slow death from some painful medical ailment. It's hard to measure these things but my gut feeling is that the good outweighs the bad. Diseases don't just happen because a dog is living like a dog. Most strays aren't inbred, ailment-prone pedigrees which is a good start. Homeless people don't just lie in the rain and not give a fuck - they find shelter and so will their dogs.

Well what a cool kid. You realise theirs a borderline between correcting somebody who is impossible to understand and beating the fuck out of somebody like everything they write is being marked on and forms a basis of who they are as a person.

I can understand being pissed at people who make no sence. But your just being a stupid cock who feels the need to be superior. "LOOK GUYS ENGLISH IS MY FAVORITE SUBJECT LETS GO ONLINE AND START CORRECTING EVERYBODY FOR ANYTHING."

This reminds me of the movie Amores Perros. Don't want to give it away for people who haven't seen it, but when the homeless guy rescues the new dog... I have rarely wept so much while watching a movie.

A few years ago I was working at a local, small pet store. This homeless guy comes in and begs for some food for his mixed Labrador. I get all teary-eyed, of course, and give him a dog food can for free. He thanks me and walks out. After 10 minutes, I go out for a smoke break and see him in the corner, eating the dog food all by himself.

Such a beautiful animal. The man on his own wouldn't bring much sympathy but you see a dog cuddled up with him and it has such a massive effect on your emotions. Stupid feelings.

There's a homeless guy and his black dog in NYC, near downtown Broadway and close to Chambers street near City Hall.

I pass by all the time and I feel sad looking at them.

I like this picture. Dogs can be loyal friends, share our happiness or sadness. Although you may behave badly to they or have no food for them , they till always love you. This picture remind me some stories and films that i used to see such "Red dog" or " The story about Hachiko".

Do you find the fact that they are both homeless and without regular food or nutrition sweet too? Or was it when you walked away fast while taking the picture.

I mean this is a pretty common sight if you've ever been in a city. The dog is being given a shitty life and is being used to manipulate people for change.

When i lived in Galicia, Spain, i used to see a surprising amount of homeless. However, what was even more surprising was that a lot of them had k9 companions. Even more, most of these people fed their dogs first before feeding themselves. Whether it was a trick to get peoples money or just for companionship the people with dogs looked a lot better in health and mind than those w/o. I saw a lot of deeper connections with man and dog there, then I've probably ever seen.

[–]LegendaryBerry 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to think that, too. But then I realized that he is a homeless person who probably can't feed himself. That dog probably took weeks to die an incredibly painful death, then got left on the sidewalk after that dude drunkenly wandered off to get beat up by a bunch of gang members.

Homeless people should not own pets.

Does anyone else feel more compelled to donate to a homeless person with a dog or is it just me?

[–]funkbanger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the problem is that they know about it, i see often homeless punks with a dog, and they mistreat the dog and still buy drugs instead of dog food, letting the dog eat in the trash.

its sad for the dog, really, i hate that someone can do that. so, no, i dont give money.

Homeless man probably can't afford to even feed the dog. Also this pic is old. That dog probably didn't make it through the winter.
