This also occurs in the Badlands in South Dakota, although certainly to a less dramatic extent without the blue.

[–]RiseAM 8 points9 points ago

the blue doesn't actually exist so much... someone tweaked the levels in photoshop pretty heavily.

[–]Ceru 1 point2 points ago

This reminds me of Artist's Palette in Death Valley next to Badwater. I was on a roadtrip through CA. Talk about incredible.

[–]bnscow 2 points3 points ago

ctrl+f 'badlands'.

upvote.

[–]cannontrodder 65 points66 points ago

It's heavily photo-shopped, they've definitely over-egged the saturation levels.

[–]ProfessorPoopyPants 41 points42 points ago*

Last time this was posted (I'll try and find it) there was a link to an article on why this isn't photoshopped, it has something to do with when it rains (or another rare event) the colours become a lot more vivid. I'll look on karma decay.

Here it is. I was right, it's due to the autumn rainfall, the colours are heavily enhanced. No photoshop.

[–]cannontrodder 5 points6 points ago

If that's the case then I humbly apologise for calling 'shop on it!

[–]drewlb 2 points3 points ago

Still disagree... all it says is "sometimes it rains" on a Chinese website. I'm still calling this a HEAVY shop job on the saturation. The other pictures look more realistic. The article cited does not even mention the rain except in the title, and then you have 3 real looking pics and one super shop pic.

[–]assumption_bulltron 2 points3 points ago

The saturation on this pictures was still boosted a lot. Look at the other pictures on that page and how blue the shadows are.

[–]Poop_is_Food 0 points1 point ago

you just posted a link to the same shopped picture, along with a few others that do not show the same colors. do we have to do this again?

[–]phreakinpher 55 points56 points ago

Yeah, the wikipedia picture of a danxia is a lot less saturated and a lot more phallic.

[–]sirhotalot 59 points60 points ago

Upvote for actual earth porn.

[–]nluqo 43 points44 points ago*

How about a closer comparison?

Not heavily saturated, but still amazingly red. Also:

Particularly noted are two formations: a stone pillar called the Yangyuan ("male/father stone") that bears a remarkable resemblance to a phallus and the Yinyuan hole, which (especially to people who visited the Yangyuan pillar before) somewhat resembles labia.

[–]RiseAM 7 points8 points ago

male/father stone

I'm so happy it's basically named the penis stone, because that's what it is and everyone knows it.

[–]dioxholster 1 point2 points ago

NSFW!

[–]potsandpans -1 points0 points ago

lets be honest, it's just a cock

[–]CountNoAccount 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes a rock is just a rock.

[–]LeonardNemoysHead 1 point2 points ago

This is not one of those times.

[–]shfo23 9 points10 points ago

Like most of Mind_Virus's posts, it's also a repost from 2 months ago.

[–]powercow 14 points15 points ago

also it doesnt matter.

I'm hear 24/7

I have signed up to more subreddits than god.

My front page looks nothing like yours.

Despite I try my best not to, and even have a collect of friends who constantly say "did you see"

I still miss shit on a daily basis.

Over time I have discovered that I actually see more complaints over reposts than I have actually seen reposts. SO your comment is one of the most reposted comments there is on reddit.

[–]The_lolness -2 points-1 points ago

Just saved your comment to slap it in the face of whoever whines about this.

[–]VulturE 5 points6 points ago

mind_virus just grabs alot of interesting pictures from various websites and is the top contributor to a majority of the *porn and wallpaper subreddits.

he isn't reposting stuff from reddit...just simply posting stuff.

[–]shfo23 -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, I know. I have him RES tagged. Barring any judgement calls on that, I think it's useful to see (some of) the comments that people made before.

[–]kilokhan 0 points1 point ago

When I searched on Google Images for "danxia", there are many pictures that look to be just as brilliantly colored. Then there are others that are still brilliantly colored, yet not nearly as intense. Finally, there are a few pictures that aren't quite brilliant at all. I wonder if different areas where this type of thing occurs will have different colors, or even seem to 'change colors' depending on the amount of daylight available?

[–]flukshun 0 points1 point ago

Welp, better than having been dyed by the chinese government to create a tourist attraction, as was my initial suspicion

[–]drewlb -2 points-1 points ago

a very reasonable suspicion... that or toxic waste dumping

[–]dakta 4 points5 points ago

Largest version here (scroll down a little).

No way to tell original source, this is just one of those images that gets reposted, reblogged, and shared all over the web, obscuring the original source beyond anyone's ability to find it.

[–]Operahat 4 points5 points ago

The rock restaurant in Zanzibar looks so awesome

[–]cybrbeast 0 points1 point ago*

Is there really no one who has gone there with a decent camera and posted some pictures online? I'd love some high resolution shots.

*edit, somewhat better shots at Flickr

[–]dakta 0 points1 point ago

I hadn't checked, I was just looking for a better version of this image.

[–]thoughtso 3 points4 points ago

Interesting. Reminds me of the Painted Desert in Arizona.

[–]Ozark 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Goab, the desert of colours from the Neverending Story. Every hill of sand is a different colour, with little streams of silver and gold sand separating the dunes. Fictional but beautiful :)

[–]SoundManCO 3 points4 points ago

This also happens in Calhan Colorado, a place called the Paint Mines. http://img.groundspeak.com/waymarking/display/730ffd36-9581-4956-b362-c6233f734907.jpg http://www.hdrspotting.com/upload/resizedspot//1125/11354/large_DSC_0058_59_60_tonemapped.jpg

This is not far from where I live. It is amazing to see.

[–]Hunter1127 2 points3 points ago

Dude. Real life Tiny Wings.

[–]jswhitten 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of the Painted Dunes in northern California.

[–]Bob3333 1 point2 points ago

Looks like mine tailings.

[–]QJosephP 1 point2 points ago

I can't wait until this becomes a Minecraft biome.

[–]mjq03 1 point2 points ago

This is Willy Wonka status

[–]i_dont_want_to_be_on 0 points1 point ago

From the thumbnail I thought it was a pile of gummy worms

[–]Leolisk 0 points1 point ago

I just hiked every trail in DanXia about a month ago. There were rocks shaped like penii, vaginas and boobs, but nothing close to this.

[–]bfhancock 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the set of some crazy 90s Nickelodeon game show.

[–]hyperduc 0 points1 point ago

"This unique photo shows heavy pollution left over from industries in China"

[–]Future_Elitist 0 points1 point ago

The mountains of Jupiter are cooler.

[–]bpg131313 0 points1 point ago

Is this the only photo that exists of this area? I've seen this image several times, and it always has those people in it, and it's always very low resolution. You'd think something this amazing would have been photographed in high definition by now.

[–]SG804 0 points1 point ago

This is either the best place in the world for hallucinogens or the absolute worst, I'm not quite sure which.

[–]Scuba_Sexteban 0 points1 point ago

[–]Rasberriez 0 points1 point ago

I read the title as dyslexia, i must have danxia

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I think the good people at /r/rainbowbar would appreciate this.

[–]maddietheasshole -2 points-1 points ago

ohhh, it looks like candy, I wanna eat it.
