All laptop manufacturers should be taking cues from Apple about this specific thing. And have a clear "grab here" area in the middle.

I also think more laptops should have the ability to open the screen without holding down the body, or without almost lifting it by the screen.

The thing is, to make it stiff enough to stay erected at any angle by itself, which is the standard, you really can't do it any other way, sadly. If you were to use some kind of internal compression chamber to slow the lift and close of the lid, kind of like how some fly-screen doors have the cylindrical compression at the top to stop them slamming, that's really the only solution I can conceive.

Besides, if people weren't breaking their laptops constantly, how can we keep charging them $500+ for LCD repair? [personally I hate this but my company loves it, why wouldn't they]

My macbook pro cam be opened with one finger on the lid, without the body lifting or the laptop moving. No idea how that works though, other than the weight ratio between lid and body.

Yeah I've noticed the Macs have much better lids than pretty much all the Windows machines (I don't work for Apple sadly), like you said the lids are generally pretty light compared to the body so that helps.

I want a MB Pro :(

Apple has a way of making brilliant touches and solutions in their stuff for sure. The charger plug is brilliant, and solves the "yanked laptop off table by tripping on cable" problem. I've seen that crisis averted a million times by now because of that. And the little battery indicator on the side/bottom with the button and LEDs is cool. And for some reason, the feeling and sound of that lid closing is so perfect. It feels high-end.

5 years fixing laptops and I never once saw this happen.

Lots of bad hinges. Never a screen broken from being grabbed from a corner. Even the cheap flimsy 17" ones. If it were so easy to break the screen MFGs would get called out in a heartbeat.
