Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Thank you for that.

I find it interesting that the metal waste bin is lined with newspaper (no plastic bags) among other details of what we would think of as a lower income kitchen setup.

That and ... what is up with her right calf? There's a dark area there.... perhaps some attempt to adjust the image?

[–]D49A1D852468799CAC08 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm guessing that photo was taken in the 1950s. Plastic bags did not become commonly used until the 1970s - 1980s.

[–]flip69 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it's those little things that make the image really shine. It's difficult to get a good quality image from back then to see those everyday differences in our lives.

That and the sheer commonality of the woman in the kitchen vs the hollywood glam shots. Checking inside the oven brings up all these connotations of a young woman in her apartment, trying to impress her date or husband.

[–]mcmurphy1 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And she's literally barefoot in the kitchen. That's a 1950's Americana male dream right there.

[–]flip69 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IMO, It's not that she's "barefoot" that's the dream or what I appreciate in the images "story".

[–]andrewembassy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty sure the dark area on her calf is a shadow

[–]flip69 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, it's not.

I think that someone tried to augment the negative or the (more likely) the print to make it look like a shadow/stream line her calf.

IF you zoom in, the marking seems almost like damage to the print. Airbrushing wouldn't have produced the type of streaking. -it's odd.

She was so god damned nice. I'm working on a video about her work with UNICEF right now. She dedicated the last five years of her life to saving the world's least privileged children and spreading a message of infrastructure building in the third world. Amazing woman.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]l80 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's such a quirky movie in and of itself, exploring a very specific perspective of the lead character. To be fair, I don't think it gives a perspective of France, so much as does a very good job of illustrating the feeling of being alone when surrounded by a bustling society (be it Paris, London, New York, etc.)

It was both unusual and relatable. I can't speak for anyone else, but it did such an excellent job of focusing on characters that the idea that it would be representative of an entire country is crazy.

I think the fact that it was so universal and yet French is really what made it such a neat film.

[–]flawlesslylogical 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm English; but since it were so heavily stylized and colorized it didn't really reflect France as it is in any way to me.

[–]Samuel_Gompers 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I happen to really like the director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, so I was more struck by the way it was so much cheerier than some of his previous movies, namely Delicatessen and La cité des enfants perdus. I think anyone with common sense though would think that trying to interpret the entire nation of France through that movie though would be like trying to do the same for the United States with something like It's A Wonderful Life or The Searchers.

I don't assume fictional movies accurately represent the setting they happen to take place in.

However, this movie caused me to take an interest in other modern French cinema. The soundtrack is one of the best things I've ever listened to. Yann Tiersen is a demi-god. I probably listened to the soundtrack a hundred times through before even watching the film.

[–]cralledode 3 points4 points ago

American here, Amelie is seen as a quintessential White French film.

It's totally in line with the 1950s French Absurdism that came during the onset of the Cold War, but it's not as depressing. Rather, it's a mix of that absurdism and the light-hearted colorful cosmopolitan hipsterism that has become so popular recently in developed countries.

Serious issues are not worth losing lunch over, and the smallest pleasures of life are worth planning and fighting for.

Now, I say it's the quintessential white French film because there is a whole other side to France that Americans tend to see as very "French" that is better demonstrated in masterpieces like "La Haine" and in blockbusters like "Banlieue 13"

[–]Palamede 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see what you mean when you talk about a "white french film", because critics in France said the same thing, even if there is one Arab actor (famous Jamel Debouzze) in Amélie.

This year, the film "intouchables" was seen by 22 million people (we are 65 million in this country), and it was the gathering of "white films" and "banlieue films".

Do you have a penis? Do you like women? If yes then of course you would have married Audrey Hepburn...

[–]Aniridia 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just to be clear...she broke off her first engagement and then divorced twice, having an affair during her second marriage. I know it's Hollywood, and the rules are a bit different there, but I'm pretty sure that would place her outside of "marriage material" for most. I realize that's not the real point of the OP though...

[–]well_golly 12 points13 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So she wasn't into "buying", but rather into "leasing". I'm with OP on this one:

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Scramisaur 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually she had quite a bit more affairs than that. Her first marriage to Mel Ferrer was unfulfilling and there was an unspoken mutual agreement that an open relationship could be sustained as long as it was discreet. Her second marriage was sort of an ego-boosting bounce back with a man 10 years younger than her. Andrea Dotti, her second husband was notorious for being a womanizer; Miss Hepburn was humiliated by his publicized antics and she had a couple of flings in Rome as a result. She was not an unfaithful wife; her "affairs" only began after marriage became a pretense. She was unlucky in love, and she did commit adultery, but I think the circumstances prove that it's quite off the mark to claim that she was a poor wife; she tried very hard to rescue both marriages against her personal happiness. She had a good heart and the best of intentions.

[–]flip69 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that much of it has to do with her own father leaving (abandoning) her mother and herself when she was only 6 years old. That and the disruptions of WWII must have affected her ability to chose and form solid lasting relationships.

I won't fault her too severely, in fact I feel sorry for her (if she did try to save the marriages it proves that she wasn't a bad person... just hurt)

[–]Scramisaur 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Her first husband Mel Ferrer was definitely a reflection of Audrey's need for a father figure; he directed her and often made decisions for her. One time, when Mel and Audrey were dining with friends, Audrey put her elbows on the table and Mel poked her in the arm with a fork and sternly reprimanded her for acting unladylike. Another time Audrey spilled on herself and said the word "shit." Mel was so angry that he stormed out of the room. I think Audrey eventually realized that she and Mel were just different people; it wasn't that he wasn't loving or well-intentioned (he was), but that he was too rigid and demanded too much from her. He always harbored some resentment that his wife was more accomplished than he was.

I think her wartime experiences gave her a quiet sort of sensitivity that was not without strength. Without that, I doubt she could have survived 5 miscarriages, the pain of two divorces and two affairs that were ended because the men were sterile. She wasn't always a happy person, but she eventually found happiness with Robert Wolders and banished her inner demons. The fact that she devoted the last years of her life to UNICEF, I think, showed satisfaction and contentment with her own life: she had a stable relationship, two great kids, a successful career, and a cavalcade of loyal friends. After she had sorted her own life out the rest of it was devoted to others.

Co-stars William Holden, Gregory Peck, Albert Finney, and just about everyone who had worked with her confided later that they loved her on some level. I think her marriages failed not because of incompatibility or because of a lack-of-effort, but because of base inadequacy-the number of men that were as generous, as kind, or as talented as Audrey could perhaps be counted on one hand. Some people can walk down a street for 20 minutes and find a partner on equal footing with themselves, but with someone like Audrey it took 50 years. You don't match a diamond with a bar of steel; not even gold or sapphire will do. It takes a diamond to match a diamond,

[–]flip69 2 points3 points ago

No, The problem with Audry was that not only was she from a broken home but that she had gone through WWII (impoverished and starved) as a young adult with her mother

That had to be very disruptive to her ability to form some solid relationships.

[–]antaryon 20 points21 points ago

She's taking something out of the oven without oven mitts.

2/10 would not bang

Or, she could be putting something in the oven...

[–]mcmurphy1 1 point2 points ago

But but... that's impossible! People don't put things INTO ovens!!!

Your observational powers are lacking. Oven mitts are not the only type of protection for adequate oven safety. She is using a towel, presumably one that is thick enough to prevent injury.

Edit: It could also be a pot holder. Made of similar material to an oven mitt, but meant to be used in the way she is using it in the photo (rather than protecting your entire hand).

Sheesh.

[–]ActuallyYeah 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, detailed photo analysis (yawn) shows that there's definitely something between her hands and the metal. You can see the corner of it dangling.

And- be still my heart- she's barefoot; odds are she keeps that floor super clean.

Suggesting that you wear boots in your house, because your floor isn't clean enough not to? :(

That, or you missed the tone of my comment and are making a comment in the same tone as mine, not realizing that we're subtly mocking the same thing.

No oven gloves?

[–]mwheeler 1 point2 points ago

That's a pretty nasty burn she would have got there.

[–]stickynikki 0 points1 point ago

It looks like she is using a pot holder. My house is strictly a pot holder house. Oven mitts frighten the holy hell out of me.

it's funny to think that one of the largest demographics on reddit is mostly younger men and yet here we all are, flipping a shit and getting a hard on for audrey hepburn. god she's classy as fuck. see what i mean? i'm 20, it's 2012, by all modern college aged stereotypes i shouldn't even know who she is. but i do, and i freaking love her. hell, i'd let her friendzone the hell out of me just to spend time with her. especially when she looked like that.

[–]warmandfuzzy 1 point2 points ago

Yes. It is what it is - she has that certain something.

This is what made me a forever fan.

I find this picture quite interesting: http://elizamagazine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/audrey_pool.png

It's looks so new and modern, the exception to the atmosphere all her other pictures have. Something from another time.

Total slob, disorganized, incapable of managing her own finances, uninterested and incapable of holding an intelligent conversation, didn't watch anything other than reality TV, does not respond sexually and incapable of having an orgasm if someone is in the room? Would you marry her then? If so I would like to introduce you to my girlfriend...she needs a husband and is very hot.
