I think the video is even worse. It's the way the dog just flops down and sighs. Poor puppy.

Love this video. Taken from Youtube OP's comments:

UPDATE 22 March 2012: Lifetime Entertainment is trying to take this video away from me! I received a copyright infringement notice on my own video today from YouTube, saying that LIfetime says that they own my video that that I have infringed on their copyright. I have NEVER given anyone ownership of my video, and I have never taken any money from anyone. LIfetime offered to have my family on their Homecoming show a year ago, and I declined because they demanded ownership of the video. Now they are trying to take it anyway. I have filed a protest with Youtube and have contacted them via their Facebook page. More to follow.

I'm uploading this for family. This was the day I came back from Kandahar in Sept. 2005. Life has changed since then. But Gracie is still a good dog.

Does anyone have any idea how we can help him/fuck Lifetime?

Dogs are just the best. I'd like to believe that my dogs would do the same for me.

[–]DrakeDealer -1 points0 points ago

Cats would just be like "who the fuck are you?" dogs are the best.

[–]WildZontar 32 points33 points ago

That's not entirely true. Cats don't have the pack mentality that dogs do and so don't generally panic about you leaving for short periods of time once they're adults, but they still notice and become sad and stressed when someone close to them dies or otherwise leaves their life. I have a cat who was an adolescent when another cat of mine passed away. The young cat became very distressed after a couple days and kept waiting by the door and going out as though he was looking for something for months after.

[–]thezerofire 9 points10 points ago

We had two cats, brothers, for about 19 years. One of them had to be out down about a year before the other, and the other was never quite the same. They do know.

[–]bluesweater123 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. My grandma and her cat lived with us and when my grandma died, the cat was never the same. He wouldn't play with his toys or pipe cleaners anymore, he would spend all day curled up where she used to sit on the couch, and he cried (loudly) through the night as he walked through the house. Became a very depressing kitty.

[–]dedditor 0 points1 point ago

My dad had a cat who annoyed the shit out of him, but he kept her around and i think he really liked her. When he died, she stayed around the place for weeks. I haven't seen her for a really long time, I think she might have gone off and died. Miss that cat. Miss Dad.

[–]blkhockeypro19 0 points1 point ago

so cats are like those people that have emotions but don't show them? I'll take a dog with pack mentality...

[–]WildZontar 0 points1 point ago

What? That's not what I said at all. Cats are more independent than dogs and so it takes a little more for them to get anxious about people close to them coming and going, and the manner in which they express their emotions is different from dogs and more subtle if you don't know what to look for I guess, but the exhibit as full a range of emotions and affections as dogs do. I've grown up with cats so I think I take for granted the fact I can recognize feline emotions.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

I know mine would. He would never be the same either.

I am very moved to see this on reddit... I am close friends with the current care taker of Hawkeye, and the friends of SOC (SEAL/SW) Jon T.Tumilson... Thank you for posting this... And if you ever hear this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uK0Jco_pWQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player Please order a shot a crown royal and thank JT for his sacrifice.

[–]dadjanda 13 points14 points ago

Wow! I've seen this picture a few times on here and it's always been a real heart tugger but then i click away til the next time. But then I find out the guy was a Molly fan and, thousands of miles away in Bonnie Scotland, the guy is just like me, someone who enjoyed a party and bouncing about to Dave and the boys. Now he's not just 'another soldier' who its just easier to think of as a name I'll never know. JT, wherever you are, I'll give you a wave everytime I hear this song, raise a drink in your memory and, if you can, bring your spirit to Glasgow next time they play and come with us. You'll fucking love it!! RIP mate.

[–]Icanfixthat306 1 point2 points ago

Flogging Molly is now a top played band around these parts... I thank you for your respons

[–]aymalah 17 points18 points ago

I couldn't find the one when the dog came in, but this is the story. The dogs name is Hawkeye, and that makes it even sadder for me for some reason.

A Futurama episode called Jurassic Bark.

[–]burpinator 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]Carvillol -1 points0 points ago

Saddest moment in television history, worse than when Ash let Butterfree go in that Pokemon episode.

I cried when I saw that episode, part of the reason I still love Futurama, despite the last few seasons not being quite as good.

[–]BrokenArts 8 points9 points ago

As much as I want to watch that, I cannot. :( Breaks my heart, for the family, and the dog. :( R.I.P soldier.

[–]loves2comment 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of that pic of the soldier with an open-casket funeral where a woman is carrying a little 2-year-old away and she is reaching towards the casket.

Can't find it now. It's a few years old, used to be in the encyclopedia dramatica bawww article.

They are truly are: man's best friend.

[–]Death_To_Your_Family 1 point2 points ago

My friend died in an avalanche while snowmobiling in 2008. My family breeds boston terriers and he had bought one from us a few years prior. She was his pride and joy. We kept one of the pups from the same litter. Anyhow, the funeral was open casket and fucking horribly heart breaking. His dog was there in the front row. I felt so sad for the family. His dog even looked kinda sad, but mostly confused. I burst into tears at the sight. Still hurts thinking about it.

[–]emmett22 2 points3 points ago

Let´s just see a cat do that...

[–]btirabail 3 points4 points ago

I think r/military might appreciate this, too.

[–]CndConnection 1 point2 points ago

Oh man thats torture....

[–]phoenix25 1 point2 points ago

There's just something about military funerals that make me even sadder than other funerals. There is just something so heartwrenching about giving the ultimate sacrifice for your country.

I think we're doing animals, especially dogs, a disservice to say that they don't understand death.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]greensilk 4 points5 points ago

That's fair, though I don't think we can scientifically say that they "really do" experience any emotion or understand any complex idea.

[–]AntiSophist 10 points11 points ago

I couldn't find the video but I was watching national geographic the other day and saw a tigress cary around one of her cubs for thee days licking it trying to get it to wake up. It later ate the cub to prevent predators from eating it. She didn't leave the cub immideately once she realized it was dead. To me that is an emotional response not a survival instinct. And that's a wild animal, while dogs are domesticated and need humans for their survival and nurturement. I think you are wrong.

[–]ElBiscuit -2 points-1 points ago

It later ate the cub to prevent predators from eating it.

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I don't know. I'm curious, though, how anyone knows that that's why she ate it.

[–]rphillip 0 points1 point ago

I think it's a disservice to assume that humans understand death, much less a dog. It's beautiful to see his loyalty, but I'm glad that dogs don't have to comprehend death.

[–]matts2 0 points1 point ago

I can see how the dog might understand death. I don't see how the dog could possibly understand that the body is in the coffin.

[–]ScotchMcBagpipe 10 points11 points ago*

I totally see your point, and we do project too many human emotions on animals. But the individual pheromones they can smell are amazing. From what I've read, although he obviously doesn't comprehend it like a human, I really do think he can smell his owner and the smells that do along with death and decaying, although he may not recognize it as death... There's so many stories of dogs refusing to leave dead loved ones. Regardless, this is just heartbreaking - whatever he's feeling/thinking, he's obviously heart broken. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-cadaver-dog.htm http://www.smh.com.au/world/science/research-boost-to-help-dogs-smell-dead-20111114-1nfkg.html EDIT: added links

[–]DocJRoberts[S] 6 points7 points ago

yup. They can sense all kinds of moods. My golden retriever knows when I'm sad or depressed instantly. His ears and head sag a little and he just kinda comes up and cuddles with me... I love my dog :)

[–]AyaJulia 5 points6 points ago

It's a shame people are downvoting you for posting something other than "ONIUNZ" or "SO SAD." You are creating and contributing to discussion. You aren't even bickering with anyone. I don't understand people sometimes.

[–]arquebus_x 1 point2 points ago

Maybe someone who knows animal behaviors can fully explain this?

A dog can detect the difference between living creatures and dead ones, especially ones that have been dead a while.

[–]bruyere 1 point2 points ago*

I'm not a vet or a zoologist, but I did manage a dog daycare for 4 years. I heard some pretty insane stories regarding dogs' reactions to death, and if I had to guess, I would say yes, they understand. this would be an evolutionary trait for them just like it would be for us. periodically, in a wolf den, animals would have to die from disease or other causes. if the wolves couldn't learn to recognize the signs associated with death in order to remove it/dispose of it, they would risk attracting scavengers. technically, it's all just food. besides that, the emotional investment is very real. I just heard a story from my former co-workers about the owner of one of our daycare dogs, who had died of a heart attack at home. he had the door cracked open so the dog could go outside (he was an alcoholic and often passed out in this spot), and she survived on snow and toilet water for almost a week before someone found the body. it had been in front of a running space heater the whole time and reeked of death. the dog was starving, and it was absolutely clear that her master was dead, but she never ate him.

Edit: I should add that the reason they found the body is that he and his ex wife used our daycare to share dog custody without seeing each other, and the dog didn't show up at daycare. Sad story.

[–]Adamskinater 0 points1 point ago

I think that's part of the sadness of the picture. I'm sure the dog can detect a scent from his master, and i'm sure it's an unusual scent, and the dog knows something's wrong.

The picture isn't saying the dog is completely aware of the circumstances of the situation. It's just so heart-wrenching because the dog appears distraught and doesn't seem to know why his master is where he is

[–]SmartPhoneRetard 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if it is precisely "human" behaviors, but what else can we compare it too.

I know my dogs can tell when I am sad or happy. Whether that is true empathy or just a different scent I give off, I don't know.

I know my dogs get sad, happy, etc... not sure if the emotions are completely the same but like I said before, how else can we compare them?

now that's a repost. I cry evrytim!

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

[–]matts2 -3 points-2 points ago

Very touching. But there is no possible way for the dog to have a clue that the body is in the coffin. We understand that because we have lots of socialization to tell us what a coffin is and what a funeral service looks like. Even if the dog has a notion of death they don't have a notion of embalming the body then putting it on display in a coffin before burial.

[–]arquebus_x -1 points0 points ago

But there is no possible way for the dog to have a clue that the body is in the coffin.

Scent. The dog would easily be able to smell the contents of the casket, and know 1) his person is in there and 2) his person is dead.

[–]matts2 -2 points-1 points ago

Scent? That body had better not smell like a live person. The body in the coffin either smells like decomposition, like an embalmed body, or in actuality it smells like nothing at all. But there is no way it smells like the person when still alive. What may have happened is that they are manipulating the dog and the attendees and us. Someone but clothing on the coffin and led the dog there to get the scent. But that is manipulation, not the dog actually responding to the body in the coffin.

[–]arquebus_x 2 points3 points ago

But there is no way it smells like the person when still alive.

Of course not. But it would still smell like the person. Dogs can discriminate a lot more than we can. They can identify individuals and changes to those individuals' scents. Death is a state change; it doesn't completely eradicate the unique odor of the person.

Also, your clothing theory could account for it, but not as a manipulation. Presumably the man was buried in his uniform, which he would have worn at least once before, and transferred his scent onto it. So even if the dog couldn't smell the man anymore (which is, I reiterate, a false assessment), the dog would still be able to smell the clothing.

[–]bmacgruber -3 points-2 points ago

Pretty sure thoroughly cleaning and embalming the body would remove scent. And at that point, you aren't producing one anymore. If the deceased hadn't been out through this process I'd agree they would still smell the same, but all those chemicals turn you into a sterilized object.

[–]arquebus_x 0 points1 point ago

As far as humans are concerned, yes. But a beagle can smell urine in a water solution of one part per million.

[–]matts2 -3 points-2 points ago

But it would still smell like the person.

No it would not. The body is embalmed.

[–]grayziehobbes -2 points-1 points ago

[–]NigNogPooPoo -3 points-2 points ago

[–]JesusfromNebraska -5 points-4 points ago

I hate to be 'that guy', but there's no clip of the dog walking up to that spot and lying down himself. I suspect the family brought the dog into the funeral, walked him up to that spot and had him lay down and 'stay'.

I'm not saying they were looking for press, I think they were just trying to do something touching for people who knew this soldier - and it's been covered as something that it's not.
