When I was in high school there was this kid I was friends with. I told him a joke one day and we both laughed. Then he turned around and told a huge group of people my joke, they all laughed, and he took credit for the joke. The joke was still funny, but the guy was kind of a dick for not giving me any credit for it.

On 9gag they don't care who made the original and often claim they made the content themselves, even going as far as claiming they are legion and all that crap.

On Reddit people moan when you rehost content somewhere other than the authors site (big hate of blogspam) and whenever someone finds out that someone is falsely claiming they made something, everyone hounds on them and starts pushing the original.

Again, Reddit does this too. Remember the dude who received a letter with $100 for his stolen Charizard trading card? Turns out it wasn't him who received it, but stole it from another Redditor who posted it on /v/ (or /b/, I can't remember). Yes, there was an outrage about it but it doesn't hide the fact everyone ate it up at the beginning.

Actually by having people hound you to the point where you delete your account, many are discouraged from trying such things.

On 9gag, people don't care at all. If anything when you bring up the fact that it was stolen, people attack you.

That is one of the big fundamental differences here.

Everybody copies, alters, shares and captions images. It's as old as the internet. Seeing all the obnoxious 9-gag watermarks is like buying fruit covered with stickers that read "Shipped by Joe's Shipping! At Joe's, we know what you want!". It's lame and pointless and make people hate Joe's.

Objectively, it shouldn't. But you're not a robot, apply the human element. Say you hear a catchy song on the radio and you think you've discovered a great new band. You use the lyrics to look it up at home and it's a Nickelback tune. Shouldn't matter, but it will. That'll leave a little shit in your stocking, won't it?

Of course for the purposes of this example, you'll have to pretend that Nickelback could make a likeable song, and that they don't have such an instantly distinguishable "White trash without the edgyness" sound.

I'm not sure if you're right or not. I don't consider it being "open-minded." I hear all of the talk about the "hive-mind," as if there's no reason to dislike Nickleback besides Reddit doesn't like them.

On the other hand, I guess I've never really gotten the whole "guilty pleasure" thing either. I like some things that aren't high art. I'm not embarrassed by it, though.

Usually? The top twenty posts on /r/funny as of writing are hosted by imgur. I'm not defending 9gag but Redditors too are shocking when it comes to crediting their sources.

As idiotic as it sounds, I consider the type of people who are 9gaggers to be generally annoying. I know a Romanian chick who is generally not funny, and laughs hard at the most absurd shit, like toilet humor(no pun intended) which I hate more than anything. When she discovered 9gag, it was like the entire Romania discovered internet humor and memes that day, and my news feed became nauseating. Maybe it's just coincidence, but rage comics that got down voted to hell here, are cult classics over at 9gag.
