C'mon, you got an answer. He may have sound a little rough but that's no reason to be rude towards the people who like Minecraft. :/

Definitely cool, but I'd be scared as fuck.

I've been whitewater kayaking for almost 5 years and only this past Christmas was I able to afford a drysuit. Consequently, I've gotten hypothermia from paddling in winter with air temps of -10°c and water at 1°c. It's probably the least pleasant short-term experience I've ever had. Still though, you can improvise with a wetsuit and semi-dry kag (nylon top without a neck seal, but with latex wrist seals) and swimming doesn't, at any rate, mean death in 1 -2 minutes.

you'd have to be able to break the ice to tip over I'm sure you'd be able to break out again. Especially looking at how easily it appears to be breaking in the pic.

[–]Likes2PaintShit 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the breaking out of the thin ice that I'm worried about.

It's the freezing to death so quickly.

[–]Gumburcules 15 points16 points ago

When you go winter kayaking you wear a drysuit, which is a nylon jumpsuit with rubber gaskets at your neck, wrists, and ankles. That combined with a sprayskirt sealing your lower body into the boat means that if you flip, your face and hands get cold and wet, but that's about it.

[–]Pravusmentis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A drysuit costs a bunch more than a wetsuit, not to say you shouldn't use it though

Oh... well... I assumed if you wanted to go kayaking on ice you're ok with getting dunked in ice cold water. It's refreshing, you know... for a minute. (Canadian)

My uncle owned a cabin in the Canadian wilderness.

We'd use 4 wheelers to drive in the last 5-10 miles or so. Once there he had a private canyon lake and the view was ridiculous. His buddy would fly his floater plane up from Texas and stop for more supplies on the way in. Very cool spot.

Anyway, he built a homemade sauna there. We were there in the spring and I was maybe 14 years old. We'd get to soaking in our sweat in the sauna then run out into the freezing cold water. Dunk ourselves then book it back into the sauna.

Very memorable adventure.

Isn't that a really good way to throw your body into shock?

[–]Likes2PaintShit 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably not the best thing in the world for you, but I did find this.

After having their sweat bath the Finnish people normally have a heart stopping plunge into ice cold water, and although proponents of this practice swear by the positive effects it is supposed to have on your health, we would caution people to not follow this technique unless they have very strong constitutions.

In some spas in the world, people are treated to a cold hosing-down after a sauna, and although this is less of a shock than a plunge into ice cold water and very invigorating, it should not be practiced by people that are prone to asthma attacks. People suffering from asthma should also not sauna without first consulting their medical practitioner.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Michigan's UP is largely populated by Finlanders, so saunas are abundant in just about any hotel, college dorm, and people's private camps. It was a common occurrence during college to take a sauna, go jump in a snowbank, then back into the sauna. Rinse, repeat. Of course, we were young, stupid, and on drugs at the time, but nobody went to the hospital over it.

If you're not wearing a drysuit you can die almost instantly. The shock will make you gasp and if you're underwater when you gasp, your lungs will be filled with ice cold water. I went coldwater kayaking once, not knowing this. Reading about it later scared the pants off of me.

(just kidding, I wasn't wearing pants when I read about it)

[–]Kracus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

meh, I've been in ice cold water several times. I didn't suffer an instant heart attack or go into shock but it was shockingly cold!

I'm certain I wouldn't last long in fridgid waters and I don't know how I'd handle being underwater in a kayak but I've been in stressful situations before so I like to think I'd be able to keep my wits about me enough to flip back.

I have a hard time seeing anyone die instantly because of cold water. FYI, I live in a city called Saint-John next to the bay of fundy. Not a lot of people know this but the bay of Fundy only changes about 4 degrees from summer to winter so it's fucking cold as hell all year round. That might have something to do with why I tolerate cold waters better. I'm serious about it being cold too, you put a foot in that water in the middle of July and it'll chill right to your bones.

[–]mindfolded 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Was your head submerged when you were in the ice cold water? That would be pretty much the first thing to go under if you were in a rolled kayak. From what I read, the gasp is involuntary and you really wouldn't be able to do much about it.

[–]Kracus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been submerged in ice cold water before yeah. The pain is mostly in the bones I find. If you can get past that you can force your body to move, roll and hold your breath. It's cold though don't get me wrong and it fucking sucks once you're out too but it's not so cold that I can't control my body. Individual digits maybe but arms and legs no.

I fell through the ice once as a kid and I saved my cousin who fell through the ice, I partially fell in saving her too but managed to keep one foot on the ice so it was just my leg, I pulled her out by her hair cause it's all I could grab. She was able to walk home after being dunked in too again, in the middle of a Canadian winter. I've had way too much experience in cold waters, I also fished lobster for 2 years on a boat. Dunking your head does nothing but chill the ears, it's your body and your nuts that's the hardest :)

Whitewater kayaker here. Been upside down in below freezing water a few times, with the added stress of being in the shit, as they say. You aren't going to be forced to gasp, and it's really not painfully cold. Swimming is different, and it's not a good thing to end up out of your boat in cold conditions. But in all of those situations, drysuit is mandatory. Also a skullcap under your helmet and pogies. Yeah, if you wear cotton and gear without gaskets, you shouldn't be on the water in cold weather in the first place.

[–]helcite 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, your head doesn't get magically pushed under when you roll a kayak.

[–]Kracus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a hard time visualizing it not...

[–]helcite -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Visualizing is a poor substitute for actually having ever been in a kayak. Generally, if you tip your legs and torso wind up hitting the water first. It's very rare that you get into a tipping situation where your head is submerged and it's actually more likely that the kayak will hit you in the head.

[–]knobbysideup 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rolling a kayak up is simple, and a basic skill for anyone who spends any time on the water. With the ice there, it'd be difficult to not easily brace too. Also, drysuit and pogies, as the paddler is obviously wearing. I whitewater kayak all through the winter and have been 'down in the brown' a few times in cold weather without much trouble.

[–]brazilliandanny -1 points0 points ago

Ive been Kayaking for 8 years now. Never tipped. getting in and out of the kayak is the most dangerous time for tipping, also waves. As there is no waves here id say as long as that guy doesn't stand he'll be fine.
