So basically you're going to watch a movie with a board game in your lap? At least you'll have something to do if you don't like the movie!

Reminds me of a pastor who was invited to give a sermon to nudists. The pastor appeared naked in front of the nudists only to find that all the nudists came formally dressed for the sermon.

[–]leguan1001 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seems very unlikely.

How did he get there? Naked in his car? Not even nudist do that. They dress themselves and undress at the nudist camp. So the priest must have gotten undressed at the location the sermon was in; so he would have clothes with him in the case he was the only one undressing.

But seeing all the others dressed up nicely it seems very unlikely that he would have undressed himself in the first place. And if he was insecure, he would have asked the people there before undressing himself.

Maybe it was in the camp, so he arrived in clothes, got naked in a private room, and was then backstage someplace waiting to go on, while meanwhile the nudists, in THEIR private quarters, got dressed and assembled in the audience seating area.

[–]MediocreFriend 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes.

The Fellowship of the Ring - Harry Potter.
The Two Towers - Storm Trooper.

They know you're being cheeky about costuming, you know you're being cheeky about costuming, it's good fun, and it proves that we movie fans don't take ourselves too seriously.

When Titanic 3D comes out in April, honestly I just don't know which it's going to be yet.

It would be easier with Harry Potter because of the glasses, but Storm Trooper seems more apropos.

1st Book: Amazing

2nd Book: Good

3rd Book: Okay

[–]WileECyrus 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wonder about this.

A lot of people hold to this hierarchy when it comes to the series (or, even more scathingly, dismiss the third book as being not good at all), but how might that have been different if the trilogy had been one long book? Would it be said of the text that it had a powerful opening, a reasonably good mid-section and a weak conclusion? I don't really think so.

[–]benYosef 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you don't care about spoilers read on, I will try to keep it spoilerish vague but whatever.

1st Book takes an interesting concept although not entirely original and creates a powerful story with a very strong main character and some secondary characters that you are chearing for as well.

2nd Book is just a rehash of the first book, it has its moments but I don't feel the plot moved forward at all the entire book.

edit: let me add, book two was probably better than i am making it out to be, at least the first time i read it, it introduces some really cool characters and my favorite character in the entire series shines in this book, fuck you book 3

3rd Book just sucked. Suzanne Collins finally tried to advance the story and failed miserably. The main character goes crazy and its hard to empathize with her. This is understandable if she is going the PTSD route and I really wanted to believe she was... but that doesn't explain the fact that ever single character in the entire book goes crazy. She really ruins all of the characters by the end of the book. She also uses all the same cheap tricks from the hunger games to tell a story about a real war... it showed her lack of creativity and demonstrated she had no fucking clue where this story was going. The 3rd book was not only terrible it made me hate the author. It really made me question the first two books as well. I have since concluded that the second book was pretty terrible and the first book was just ordinary tean fiction that moved me once but nothing incredibly impressive.

[–]DoctorMagazine 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spoilers

I thought the whole series was pretty average, although very entertaining. I thought all of the books were pretty much on the same level, but I understand your problems with Katniss in Mockingjay. She kind of just mopes around. I don't think the deaths of many characters was necessarily a bad development, realistically there is going to be loss in a violent civil war. The method of the deaths was badly written. Most of the more main characters died helping Katniss sneak into the capital, yet by the time they get there the rebels have already arrived and she simply gets knocked out and heads back to the hospital for the 1000th time.

[–]nintendai 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Completely agree with you. Reading the books is like eating a delicious bowl of chili. And then getting to the bottom of the bowl and finding out its your own parents cooked into the chili. Makes the entire bowl shitty and unsatisfactory despite the initial flavor (basically the third book super-sucked and ruined the series).

[–]ramy211 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who loves the fuck out of Enders game would I get anything out of this? Kids killing each other isn't near as cool as child geniuses battling each other with armies. I started reading it but moved on to other things pretty quickly when it didn't grab me.

[–]my2012account 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The woman can't finish a book. It's like she gets burned out and just rushes the end. I was let down by each book in the same way. Although I still liked them all, they progressively did get worse , and I think it's because I felt the endings just kept being rushed (as well as Katniss growing ever more unlikeable).

"Oh, it's (spoiler) right at the climax of the war and the entire series as a whole? Well, in the next paragraph I'll just put the war's over, everything's fine, everybody go home. Nothing to see here."

I don't have testicles, so it's the closest to blue balls I've ever been.

[–]brettmurf 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I read a lot, and the books got popular. This typically makes me expect the worst. I blew through the first one, and reading the second one quickly.

They are entertaining thus far, and actually very good books. The characters are written well, and the action and story pacing so far seem to match an ideal book/movie transfer, especially since much of the premise involves them being televised. Really easy format to make into a movie.

Book 1 and 2 so far seem distinctly seperate books. I am actually surprised book 2 has had such a good story so far, but the way this world is set up, they should all be dying by the end of book 2. There is no salvation in the world portrayed and I almost am sad to know how disappointed other readers were with book 3, since book 2 being good surprised me, so far.

What truly amazes me is that this story is overtly socialist in message, and calls upon the personal responsibility from one human to another to drive the changes required for a better world.

Pretty much the opposite of the willful disobedience towards a more equal society is what I see in 2012 America. So the popularity of the book is either not a single Republican (at least as far as what that means right now) or social problems are easier to come to terms with in fake books.

That or there is an overlap in the people who read and also are dissatisfied with our current state of affairs.

These first two books are almost as anti America as can be. Too bad Anti-America now means trying to make the lower class better. It basically illustrates the difference between upper and lower classes, and how for people to be absurdly rich requires other people to be slaves.

The blunt message that is somehow popular either illustrates a blind audience, or the obvious disconnect between the FOX news viewer versus the reader who is waiting on this movie.

Or we can read books that illustrate the ideal, while voting in people like Gingrich who are doing their best to promote hatred and inequality.

I either need to be fascinated by this, or cry.

[–]bensaysitathome 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not saying I'm entirely disagreeing with you, but theres another side to it. Yes, its about the difference between the classes, and the upper abusing the lower. But in the book, the classes are a direct result of an all-controlling government. The government intentionally creates the inequalities with the only free markets being illegal, so I can see how both sides of the aisle can feel like their side is being supported by the book.

[–]brettmurf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well the class war isn't poor = good rich = bad.

The people that are poor or rich aren't inherently good or bad, and even the main character comes to realize it. They are just living life as they see it around them, and happen to benefit based upon where they were born.

It wasn't malicious, and it speaks more of a global scale as opposed to classes within one nation and one people.

The upper echelon benefits from the suffering of the lower, not directly and not intentionally, it just is the system in place.

I don't really view it as anti-government, but anti-being okay with shit that is wrong. At some point in time, some form of oppressive government has to make people feel they are better than the choice of fighting them.

I don't view the socialist message (as of halfway through book 2) even all that anti-government. Just more of a personal responsibility of each individual to make sure they aren't just looking out for themselves, but the society as a whole.

In all honesty, the book is a good story, and the political messages don't seem to be anything other than a plot device and message about people. The characters make it enjoyable, I just find the current discussion in American politics so backwards, that a book of this nature's rise to popularity seems counter-intuitive.

[–]1gunners4 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you're correct.

I hated the third book on my first read through, but I reread it immediately and found that I actually really enjoyed it. About a month ago, I reread the entire series and now I think the third book may be my favorite. Or at least tied with the first for 2nd place (I find the second book to be mesmerizing).

[–]villainocity 2 points3 points ago

After reading the first two books, I can't really disagree with this, though I would describe the romantic subplot as pointless and heavily-borrowed.

[–]Minifig81 2 points3 points ago

Except the books/movie is nothing like Battle Royale/Twilight.

[–]Donalddude 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I need an honest reply here. I never read the books so I don't know whether or not to see this movie. I keep hearing both on reddit and YouTube that this movie will be awesome. But then there's people like you who say its like twilight. As an adult male is this movie worth seeing?

[–]qwertyGG 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an adult male who's read the books. Yea, the movie should be worth seeing.

The comparisons to twilight are based on stupidity. If you started comparing every story that has teenagers to Twilight then the comparison would be accurate. I'd say its more like Battle Royale with more story and less gore (in the movie, the books are plenty violent).

Edited to remove spoilerish detail

[–]bellaluna424 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I think that a guy can easily see this movie and enjoy because while there is a romance element to books(and in theory the movie)it is not the main one. Its all about survival!

[–]sgblinky 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's like Twilight in that there are two guys. And that is the only way it is like Twilight. Really, the 'romance' is a sub-plot because one guy is her non-romantic best friend and she doesn't like the other but the politicians use his love for her as a tool.

It's like Battle Royale because there are fighting teenagers. It's not like Battle Royale because (and not knowing too much about BR) there is much more of a political-overlord plot here.

I prefer to compare it to Brave New World meets 1984 meets Lord of the Flies.

Don't pick on me because those are 'literature' and these are not. There are distinct elements from each that drive my comparison: genetic manipulation; acceptance (or unspoken rebellion) of government control; extreme class separatism; child indoctrination; I could go on.

My friends as I went as slices of bread with "Team Peeta" on them. We made bread puns, and paraded around the theater. We got asked to take pictures, and I even got a girls number. It was fake, but still, it feels nice to be appreciated for a decent costume.

I am appalled at how you are getting absolutely brutalized in these comments over a simple visual gag. I don't know what possessed Reddit to focus its turbolaser of hatred on your quirky sense of humor. I just want you to know that I thought it was positively hilarious. Don't listen to those jerkwads.
