Just curious...but is it illegal to stand in front of a speed trap and hold a sign?

[–]countryboyathome 334 points335 points ago

A guy did this in Brentwood TN a few years back and was arrested. The case was overturned by the judge. Apparently, there is nothing wrong with telling people to obey the law. ... but they still arrested him.

[–]simplystunned 156 points157 points ago*

It kind of seems like freedom of speech.

I've heard you can get a ticket for flashing your lights to oncoming traffic to warn of a speed trap.

[–]Modded_ToySol 138 points139 points ago

Just the other day I was driving down a road late at night right after going through a speed trap, I saw a car that was clearly speeding and decided to warn him. Guess who it was? A cop. As we passed each other I saw him hit his brakes and switch into the left lane. All of a sudden I remembered I need to turn left to take a "short cut" home. As I did this I saw the cop do a u-turn. He never turned on his lights, guess its good I remembered my short cut before he could fully turn around ;)

[–]fubuvsfitch 361 points362 points ago

A few years ago I turned left off of my one lane country street onto a farm to market road with a speed limit of 55mph. It was night, and I was headed to the nearest gas station about a mile away. Otherwise, the patch of road is desolate.

I notice a car's headlights rapidly approaching me from behind. It is now on my tail. And I mean on my tail. I'm going 55. I choose to not escalate by doing the 'brake tap', as my destination is now just a half mile ahead.

I turn on my blinker at the last possible second, brake hard, and begin to turn right into the station. As I do this, I exuberantly extend my middle finger.

It was a cop. He was staring right at me. He slams on his brakes and turns, barely making it into the second entrance. I stop in the middle of the lot and exit my vehicle. He does the same.

He is enraged that I flipped him off. I am enraged that he was tailing me. He says "I was on my way to stop a fight!"

I say, "Why weren't your flashing lights on?" We are both yelling.

I'm not budging. He starts to throw his position as an officer around. I told him I didn't care who he was, he was driving recklessly, and he needs to turn his flashers on. He proceeds to continue the tough guy, entitled cop act.

I say, "Don't you have somewhere really important to be?"

He huffs and puffs all the way back to his car, and as he is climbing in, I tell him to turn his flashers on, and to be safe out there (sarcastically).

He floors it out of the lot and doesn't stop accelerating until he is out of sight. No flashers.

Fuck that guy.

[–]omegatrox 200 points201 points ago

The world needs more people with backbone. Fucking jellyfish are ruining our oceans.

[–]mimus 174 points175 points ago

I think the Tazers make it harder to stand up for yourself.

[–]HankVatican 44 points45 points ago

It's my dream to get tazed while wearing my "Don't taze me bro" t-shirt.

Ninja Edit: On camera, of course.

[–]Cerbiekins 2 points3 points ago

We can totally make this happen. I'll even dress up like a fake cop and do it too!

[–]graepphone 9 points10 points ago

Given their debilitating effect on motor control this is true.

[–]fr1ction 1 point2 points ago

I love this comment, it works on multiple levels

[–]sans70 9 points10 points ago

He got caught breaking the law and acted like a child about it.

[–]zildar 2 points3 points ago

I think I will remember this and quote it for the rest of my days. Upvote to you, sir!

[–]Gouken 1 point2 points ago

I'm just afraid of getting a ticket for talking back and trying to prove a point.

[–]learnforthefuture 70 points71 points ago

I've heard of this technique being used at night to nail people with speeding tickets. Goes like this:
1) Cop finds someone traveling at the speed limit on an otherwise empty road
2) Cop rides your ass in an effort to get you to exceed the speed limit because, "wtf this guy is riding my ass"
3) Speeding ticket
Happened to my grandmother lol..

[–]Notsomebeans 36 points37 points ago

Isn't that entrapment?

[–]twentyafterfour 71 points72 points ago

You misspelled damn fine police work, lou.

[–]ArchZodiac 35 points36 points ago

Not to mention endangering us when they are supposed to protect us.

[–]AryaDee 21 points22 points ago

Despite many PD mottos, they're not actually there to protect you. They are there to enforce the laws

[–]ArchZodiac 10 points11 points ago

The reason laws are supposed to exist though is to protect people. That's why I get so sad when they hurt people instead.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

aww that cute. you think cops are here to protect us...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Most upsetting username ever.

[–]the_raptor 19 points20 points ago

That just makes me slow down so they can "overtake". I got down to 5km/h in a 60km/h zone once before the arsehole behind me got the idea. Perfectly legal here to maintain safety by keeping a "3 second gap" between cars in front of and behind you.

[–]CornflakeJustice 11 points12 points ago

I've heard of people getting ticketed in the US for driving 5mph in a 60mph zone before so that may not actually work either.

[–]donnasaurus 14 points15 points ago

My great-grandmother once got a ticket for going 40 mph on the freeway in the mid-1960s. She never drove again.

[–]sfriniks 12 points13 points ago

Expressways are different because they have minimum speeds. Regular roads do not.

[–]did_you_read_it 2 points3 points ago

even without a speed law you could be pulled for endangerment or recklessness. if the conditions are fair and you are doing 5mph on the highway you are more dangerous than the guy doing 100.

[–]the_showerhead 1 point2 points ago

Usually they'll have a posted minimum speed limit. And in those areas you can just pull off the road.

[–]Mr_Fahrenhe1t 5 points6 points ago

This happened to my Grandpa, so he stated he was trying to escape the police car's reckless driving, and asked for the man's superior.

The cop let it go.

[–]fubuvsfitch 3 points4 points ago

Makes sense... those scumbags will do anything to meet their 'non-existent' quotas.

[–]whatmyname 2 points3 points ago

Got one better for you...There was a cop traveling in FRONT of me on the highway. After several miles of me following the limit, he decides to accelerate hard to 80+. He slows back down, to where I am, and does it again, this time to what had to be about 100. He slows down again, gets behind me, and pulls me over. He then tickets me for "following him" at 85 in a 55.

[–]Jargo 2 points3 points ago

Get a CB Radio for your car, don't even have to plug it in. Just do what you've been doing, make it obvious you're looking right at their plates and then talk into it and mouth out their plate numbers. It's a LOT of fun to watch the reaction.

[–]onisama 1 point2 points ago

The best way to avoid this is to pull over with your hazard lights and stall until the cop leaves.

[–]AveSharia 2 points3 points ago

I agree with this, but it absolutely drives me nuts that police have turned into something law abiding, decent people need to avoid.

I'm sure 90% of them are great. But I wouldn't gamble at 10:1 odds for a ticket with no upside. :/

[–]mrsammercer 23 points24 points ago

I started reading your comment with a "meh" and about half-way through, I was balls out "Fuck yeah, fuck that guy!!"

I hope if a cop ever fuckles with me on the road, I'll pull the same shit, you know, without being beaten to death.

[–]FalseGenesis 16 points17 points ago

Upvote for 'fuckles'.

[–]Skitrel 39 points40 points ago

One lane country street in the middle of nowhere.... Lucky he didn't shoot you. He must have been out of crack to sprinkle on your body.

[–]Tron-Gorf 1 point2 points ago

Perfect cop to send to a domestic disturbance.

[–]USMCsniper 134 points135 points ago

I accidentally ran a red light following behind a large truck and i saw a cop behind me turn on his lights, but the cop was stuck behind a bus. i pulled into some random persons garage and turned off my car and the cop flew by me. feelsgoodman

[–]Tokndenver 156 points157 points ago

What is this, GTA? Did you get a quick paint job too?

[–]carsontl 85 points86 points ago

and then ruined it backing out...

[–]psilokan 42 points43 points ago

And shot three random people.

[–]binaryspiral 34 points35 points ago

I did that in GTA4 and got so pissed I pulled back in, got out, and tossed a grenade into the garage.

A mob of civilians gathered around and started beating my ass. I was like, wow - really? That's kind of cool.

A moment of clarity later, I pulled out my shotgun and made an example of one.

[–]TNN 21 points22 points ago

[–]fatmas 1 point2 points ago

Haha love it. I think in GTA IV though you can't use the Pay N' Spray if the police have line of sight on your car.

[–]rickatnight11 22 points23 points ago

This is my dream.

[–]DangerousPlane 15 points16 points ago

I tried this once. I saw him turn to cross the median right after passing me (I was going way too fast). But I rounded a curve and he was out of sight before he turned the cop light on. So I whipped into the next exit and found a place up the road to hide. After studying the map for a bit I realized there was no other way to get to school. So I waited a good 20 minutes and headed back to get back on the highway. He was waiting for me at the exit. He pulled me right over and said "I figured you'd come back..." Luckily he was merciful and let me off with just a speeding ticket! That was the las time I tried that!

[–]USMCsniper 3 points4 points ago

im sure that happens all the time. people think they can hide off the highway, then when they think it's clear they go right back to the same on ramp. i imagine they wait at least half an hour for people to come crawling back to the highway.

[–]TwoHands 1 point2 points ago

On highways, cops park themselves in areas where they know the exits are limited in access, far apart, or that exit onto private property or businesses.

This eliminates the chance that the person can pull a quick houdini.

[–]Knappsu 21 points22 points ago

The police once tried to wave me in to a traffic checkpoint, I was on my illegal moped(was 15 years old), waved back and they did not bother following.

[–]Libberator 6 points7 points ago

Oh hai mr policeman, you like ma bike? Have a good day now suh!

[–]Enzie1991 6 points7 points ago

awesome awesome awesome awesome

[–]MasterxAce 11 points12 points ago

I did this on a motorcycle once. Pulled into the a guys garage and he came out like who the fuck are you. I slowly took my helmet off and jacket and then asked if jake was home. Who asked the the hell was jake. I slowly got my stuff back on and was like sorry to bother you and off I went. Just enough time to kill lol

[–]simplystunned 8 points9 points ago

Well done!

[–]BelievesInGod 15 points16 points ago

even if you did flash him and he did pull you over, all you say is your car has shitty suspension and you hit a bump in the road, making your lights shine directly at him, its really not that hard to bullshit your way out of a stupid ticket, anyways IMO flashing your lights = freedom of speech

[–]bvanman 33 points34 points ago

I'm always trying to figure out if the car coming at me has flashed their lights to warn me of something, or they just went over a bump.

[–]scubbiepipp 12 points13 points ago*

actually if you look into "rules of the road" most states have a provision that you are not suppose to flash your headlights at oncoming traffic for any reason. Dim your headlights at least 500 feet before meeting traffic and within 300 feet when following another vehicle. If you meet a vehicle that does not dim its lights, look to the right edge of the road to avoid being blinded. Remember, it takes time for your eyes to adjust after meeting a vehicle at night This is a statement taken from my states "Rules of the Road"

Edit: all I meant to argue was the flashing headlights was freedom of speech. flashing headlights can be potentially dangerous, not only for the person being flashed but also for the person flashing, i.e. person A gets flashed, swerves into person B's lane head on collision ensues.

[–]FullSail 11 points12 points ago

If you meet a vehicle that does not dim its lights, look to the right edge of the road to avoid being blinded.

I just close my eyes and lean on the horn when that happens.

[–]stash600 10 points11 points ago

I attending drivers ed about 3 years ago. I distinctly remember it being encouraged to warn about dangerous conditions.

[–]RBeck 6 points7 points ago

I've done this a few times. If they catch you and even if they can't charge you with evading, they're still going to be pissed.

[–]JurisDoctor 10 points11 points ago

I know someone who fled from the police in Massachusetts.... well when he got caught the state troopers took turns beating him with their clubs to "teach him a lesson"

[–]Javier_the_Janitor 1 point2 points ago

I don't see what would've stopped that cop from busting a bitch (u-turn) and pursuing you IF he was going to pull you over

[–]usernamemadetoday 1 point2 points ago

A few years ago a cop was following me because I have a sporty car so I pulled into a McDonalds and he stopped :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I've heard stories of motorcycle police officers warning other motorcyclists of speed traps ahead.

Motorcyclists can be a real tight-knit community.

[–]anim8 1 point2 points ago

poor guy probably warmed up his taser for nothing...

[–]SavingFerris 2 points3 points ago

what happened with the case?

[–]DFSniper 5 points6 points ago

yep, that issue came up in florida last year IIRC.

[–]Saifire18 2 points3 points ago

Yup it's true, I read it in a "weird laws" article in my paper a couple months ago

[–]modus 1 point2 points ago

I got a ticket for doing that once on the Atlantic City Expressway. It was "misuse of headlights."

[–]estrtshffl 1 point2 points ago

A friend of mine got a ticket because she flashed a cop. So, you heard right.

[–]newnetmp3 1 point2 points ago

depends on the state

here is one example of a judge overturning a ticket for doing the high-beam flash.

read your state laws carefully.

[–]Casterly 8 points9 points ago

There was a guy in Austin TX doing this pretty much professionally. He was arrested so many times, and I'm not sure the legality issue was ever resolved.

[–]CaughtInTheNet 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, is the objective of the police to get people to slow down or to collect revenue from the public?? If it is the former then the guy with the sign is helping the police....and he got arrested for it- thus proving that it is all about extracting hard earned dollars from citizens.

[–]OCPScJM2 28 points29 points ago

The cop knows it is legal, but they can get away with arresting people for doing things they don't like. It serves as a warning to others who want to try the same thing and usually keeps the same person from doing it again.

It works on protestors.

Land of the free.

[–]DownvotedByCunts 5 points6 points ago

He's not telling people to obey the law, he's warning them about a police presence.

It should say something like "Slow down, speed trap ahead"

[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 27 points28 points ago

The net effect is that people slow down to the speed limit. Arresting someone for holding up that sign blatantly displays that speed limits are about revenue generation, not safety.

[–]NdecoyZ 81 points82 points ago

In New Zealand it would be classed as diverting the course of justice. Illegal here.

[–]WarPhalange 125 points126 points ago

Which is utterly fucking retarded, because the goal is to get cars to slow down. If his sign is doing the trick, then he should be given a fucking medal.

[–]Silvett 82 points83 points ago*

This is just encouraging them to slow down at speeds traps. If these signs worked in slowing people down then we could put up signs everywhere telling them their speed limi- wait...

[–]jostler57 164 points165 points ago

Incorrect - the real goal is to make money. People slowing down is a secondary benefit to the police.

[–]skrimskram 49 points50 points ago

After the trap, he should have someone holding a tip jar. Then he can get cars to slow down, AND make money, AND fuck the police.

[–]jimmy_three_shoes 36 points37 points ago

We did that once as kids. Made about $15 until the cops told us to go home.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]jimmy_three_shoes 2 points3 points ago

This happened around 1995, when I was about 10 or 11. We were standing on each side of a hill, the cops were hiding on the back side, and I stood about a block down holding up the sign "SPEED TRAP AHEAD" while wearing my Ninja Turtle Halloween costume.

My buddy was standing another block down in a Spider Man costume holding up a sign that said "TIPS". We were using a set of Walkie-Talkies and I would warn him a car was coming, and he'd start jumping around and dancing once he saw the car come over the top of the hill.

People would slow down, he'd run out into the street with a jar, and they'd hand him a bunch of change from the change dispensers in the their cars. Oddly enough most people did stop and give us money.

The cop that told us to home thought it was hilarious, and was pretty cool about it. Said it was really funny, but his boss wasn't happy about it. Offered to drive us home, and of course we said yes.

My parents looked ready to kill me when the cop pulled up and let us out of the back, and he had to convince them not to kick my ass, and that we weren't in trouble.

[–]SaltoKlose 6 points7 points ago

Damn. I just sold lemonade.

[–]bvanman 2 points3 points ago

And I gotta say, my lemonade stands were never very profitable. It helped that I usually used stuff from my house, so it was all profit.

[–]Airazz 5 points6 points ago

Which is interesting. Here (small country in Northern EU) it's illegal to alert other drivers of police with speedguns. Meanwhile, there are big and clear signs few hundred meters before every stationary speed camera. I still don't know what's the difference between the two and why alerting about stationary ones is mandatory, while alerting about mobile ones is illegal.

[–]MewsClues 5 points6 points ago

We have the same 'Speed camera (zone) ahead' signs in NZ. Most of the time there's no camera at all and there's no indication to show when 'zone' ends. It's all a lie.

We also have the camera boxes, but half the time they don't have a camera in them either.

[–]JustAPixie 7 points8 points ago

Just to play devil's advocate (because I actually agree with you), it could be argued that because people know there is a cop ahead, even the most reckless drivers will slow down. Once they have gotten far enough ahead of where the cop is, they will simply speed up again - which sort of defeats the purpose. However, if they are caught by the the cops and given a ticket, it might give them enough of a shake that they refrain from driving recklessly (at least for a while).

[–]mycatiskai 11 points12 points ago

In my experience a speeding ticket will slow you down only for as long as it takes for you to figure out how to pay for it and not get points taken off your license.

[–]addedpulp 10 points11 points ago

The goal isn't to get cars to slow down. The goal is to milk people who haven't slowed down YET out of a few hundred dollars at a time. If they wanted people to slow down, there are a dozen other ways to remind drivers of speed limits.

[–]sgtcasey 11 points12 points ago

If they wanted people to slow down, there are a dozen other ways to remind drivers of speed limits.

Like signs?

[–]LogicSays 5 points6 points ago

Empty police cars with the lights on... Have you ever seen a group of cars slow down faster than when they see a cop on the side if the road? I've seen this done in Oklahoma. Saves money on both sides: you don't have to pay a cop to sit there and actually catch people, and it saves public from being fined.

I don't see why this isn't a more popular method.

[–]Darkmore 2 points3 points ago

Cops did that here. Next day they found the cop car full of bullet holes from a shotgun lol!

[–]chupa0 4 points5 points ago

What if the sign said something like.... "You should not speed on this road... OK?"

[–]jimtk 19 points20 points ago*

There was a big trial on that subject last year in Ontario, Canada. It went up to the highest provincial court. The police arrested the guy for flashing his lights to signal the presence of cops to traffic in the other direction they said he was impeding justice ( or something like that). The court finally ruled that the goal of the speed trap was not to give tickets but to lower traffic speed and that, as such, the guy was actually helping the police in their work. All charges and tickets against that guy were invalidated and we now have a precedent of justice.

Note: Sorry my judicial lingo is better in french than in english. Ahh, the ecstasy and agony of being french canadian :) .

Edit: Here's a source on the subject. Another fun fact about speeding ticket in Canada, in Quebec city you can legally and freely register to receive text message on your phone giving you the places where speed verification (speed trap) will be performed. This service is offered by the city (my tax dollars at work!).

[–]big_black_penis 1 point2 points ago

bonne histoire, frère. but really i enjoyed this encouraging story even if it is from canada :p

[–]CornerSka[S] 72 points73 points ago

The speed trap is about three blocks away at the top of the hill that he is standing at the base of. Not more than two minutes after I took this picture, one of the officers drove down to confront my brother. The officer told my brother that he was blocking the sidewalk, and if he didn't leave the officer would have to arrest him.

[–]lazyduke 31 points32 points ago

I guess if he was moving he would not be blocking the sidewalk.

[–]wtf_is_the_internet 35 points36 points ago

Your brother didn't leave I hope? If he was arrested for "blocking the sidewalk" it wouldn't stand a chance in court.

[–]WinShark 26 points27 points ago

Who wants to go to court?

[–]CornerSka[S] 38 points39 points ago

He left right away. I don't think he wanted to run into any possibility of having some real trouble with the law.

[–]tjswish 22 points23 points ago

Tie the sign to that pole and leave lol.

Or walk back and forwards. not really blocking anything if you are using the sidewalk lol.

[–]bigspur 9 points10 points ago

It depends on how the statute's written, I suppose, but the jurisdictions with which I am familiar require you to actually block pedestrian traffic--not hypothetical folks who might want to do so. As long as he put down the sign and moved out of the way for pedestrians (and, most importantly, having a video feed running to prove it), there's nothing the cop can (legally) do.

*this is not legal advice

[–]gavbaa 17 points18 points ago

Reminder: The cop can do whatever they want at the time. Legality is sorted out in the courts. The cops are just there to start the process, and it doesn't matter why.

[–]kniteli 13 points14 points ago

Cops should be punished for illegally arresting people (within reason of course). The fact that evidence can be thrown out of court (a place that is supposedly about the truth) because an officer conducts an arrest illegally is silly. Both should be punished, because both broke the law.

[–]ftc08 6 points7 points ago

Putting signs on poles isn't necessarily protected free speech. You're technically defacing public property, which if you're defacing the property with a message they dislike they'll come down on you.

It's highly dependent on city ordinances regarding telephone poles. The city I live in frowns upon it, and will likely remove it if they don't like it, but little Timmy can post lost-dog signs without too much hassle. Even though it's public property, it's not "speech" to damage (however technically nitpicky that term is) it.

[–]MonotonousMan 6 points7 points ago

....are you fucking kidding me? Couldn't you just step back into the grass? Tell him you'll get permission from the home owner to stand out here? Walk back and forth down the sidewalk?

Come on man, stick it to the man harder!

[–]DaSeraph 1 point2 points ago

Just to warn a few more people I'd try to leave the sign up against the light post, but he was likely wise to avoid serious trouble.

[–]tsilb 16 points17 points ago

How can it be illegal to tell people not to break the law?

[–]sgtcasey 6 points7 points ago

How can it be illegal to tell people not to break the law?

If that was all he wanted to do he could have put "drive the speed limit" on the sign instead.

[–]odd84 3 points4 points ago

There was a case in my state (PA) over being ticketed for flashing headlights to warn of a speed trap ahead. It went all the way to the state supreme court that ruled it was legal, protected speech.

[–]supplyncommand 1 point2 points ago

unfortunately, freedom is becoming more and more illegal.

[–]evangelosg 10 points11 points ago

I went to Greece about 10 years ago, it was a fun experience. My favorite observation was driving down a major highway one day, noticing a group of kids on the side of the road holding up signs that said, in both Greek and English: "Speed trap ahead!!!!" We continued to drive, passed a major speed trap, and then a mile later passed another group of kids holding a sign that read: "You're welcome. Tips????"

[–]papermerc77 4 points5 points ago

Did you tip them?

[–]evangelosg 12 points13 points ago

Of course, 1000 drachma, about $3 back then. It was great, you would have thought I gave them a million dollars. This was before Greece switched to the euro, everything cost nothing, and a $1-3 tip meant you were king. My first first best story about Greece was from the following day. We went to Sparta, a long drive through the mountains, a wonderful break from the shit cloud that was Athens. After hours of travel we finally arrived, my mother, brother, and my grand parents. All of us are American born, only my great grand parents are actually from Greece, so we could not have expected what was next. As we walked through the town, a group of elders frantically approached me, staring, like they knew me. Then my grand father joined me and they yelled his name, Homer, Homer!!! They were my grand father's cousins, the Greeks that didn't come to America, recognizing their blood, three generations after it left. We sat around the town all day, shot the shit, caught up on a century of memories. They gave me my first ever cup of real Greek coffee (mud in a shot glass, basically) and my great uncle asked if I had a knife, I said no, so he gave me a switch blade. I still have it to this day, fucking awesome trip.

[–]papermerc77 2 points3 points ago

Wow, thanks for the story. What a wonderful homecoming. Plan on going back?

[–]evangelosg 5 points6 points ago

Thank you for asking if I gave a tip, it was like my brain caught on fire (in a good way), I completely forgot this entire story until you asked. I would love to go back one day. This original trip occurred when I was young, it would be nice to travel Greece as an adult, though I'm not sure at this point if anything there hasn't been protested to the ground. I mean, with costco selling tzatziki by the pound for $1-2, how can their economy not fail? :)

PS Here's a pic from the trip -- my grandmother, me, brother, and mother, in-front of the Greek flag that sits @ the Acropolis. It is significant because of WWII, nazis ordered for it to be taken down and replaced with a German flag. Only a few days later, Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas, two Athenian men, climbed the hill and tore down the German flag. It was a defining moment in the nazi resistance, i.e. touching back on my original point, Greeks really fucking hate authority. :)

He, Se7en_Sinner, DrunkenEconomist, and a few others are the 'new' round of alt accounts whose sole purpose is to accrue karma. They may be in competition but they are in cahoots as they often, or at least were, tagging onto each others comments to have a greater density of attention.

The same goes for this latest round of novelty accounts. They really do appear to be strategically planned and coordinated to have happened all at once.

[–]broncavfan 13 points14 points ago

I had an idea like this once, except the sign said "Pig ahead", and then 10 feet or so down the street I'd put a little stuffed pig. I always imagined that it would be hilarious to go to court and have the police arguing that THEY are "pig".

[–]Nesman64 1 point2 points ago

And to top it off, it'd be an anti-speed trap. You wouldn't even need the cops there to slow traffic.

[–]flinters17 6 points7 points ago

There's a road in my town that goes from 50 to 30 and cops like to sit there and wait for the drivers who aren't paying attention. One time I was on my way to a friends house and had to drive down it and wasn't thinking about the speed limit. I fly by a cop going 50 or so and realize I'm just past the sign, and look back and see him put his lights on and start to turn around. Without hesitation I turned down a side street and hid in somebody's driveway for a few minutes. Worked like a charm. I was paranoid as fuck for the rest of the day though.

I get the urge to kill myself every time I read a Reddit thread even remotely related to driving.

[–]Ballsin 11 points12 points ago

I did something similar, but TOTALY LEGAL. Got busted for not making a FULL stop at a right hand turn stop sign. Spent the next 2 hours preteding to walk in front of cars at said stop sign (would take a step off the curb), FORCING them to stop, and make the required 3 second stop. Thus preventing the cops from giving them a ticket, and saving said motorist from getting a ticket. Probably prevented at least 100 tickets at $75 a pop. Felt like a champ.

[–]couldbedoinghmwk 10 points11 points ago

Trial by Declaration. Look up if you're entitled to one in your state. You can really make it hell for the cops who want to give you that ticket. It's basically a written trial where no court appearance is necessary. I had a 700 dollar ticket thrown out using one.

[–]EukaryoteZ 2 points3 points ago

Same here, back when I had a propensity for acquiring citation on my motorcycle this saved me a few hundred dollars. Cops already have a ton of paperwork to fill out, and they can get overtime for showing up to testify against you in court. Trial by declaration gives them the least incentive to actually testify; especially if you delay the process as long as you can and they misplace their notes.

[–]esaba 3 points4 points ago

Also, if you lose a Trial by Declaration you can still request to have a new (trial de novo) standard trial. (In california at least.)

[–]EukaryoteZ 2 points3 points ago

Yep. It's really one of those things that everyone should know about.

[–]pagit 16 points17 points ago

In Vancouver they tell you where the speed traps are on the radio

[–]sgtcasey 5 points6 points ago

I'll bet they still catch tons of people, too.

[–]Slamchops 699 points700 points ago

It's too bad your brother got caught speeding on a day he clearly had nothing but time...

[–]addedpulp 617 points618 points ago

Maybe you're missing the concept behind a speed "trap."

Rarely is the speeding intentional or even knowing. The "trap" is generally where the speed decreases significantly, yet road conditions do not warrant it or suggest it. The officer sits in a place where people have yet to slow down and pick off less observant drivings; examples such as the bottom or top of a hill where acceleration is likely, or around a sharp curve. The posted speed limit is also often times obscured, or recently added/changed, but this isn't always the case.

Point being, chances are this driver wasn't speeding because they had somewhere to be, or even speeding intentionally. They just hadn't slowed yet.

I know, ruins your snarky Reddit top comment cred to actually consider fact and logic, but anyway.

[–]balathustrius 39 points40 points ago*

There's a trap in Lynchburg, VA with most of the above.

Travelling along at a speed limit of 45 through light commercial, you round a sharp curve and the speed limit drops to 35 immediately as you head down a steep hill which straightens out into a bridge over the James. There's part of a mountain on your right, concealing a a piece of the bridge until you reach the bottom of the hill.

Cops love to sit right there on the bridge all day long and pull over people coming down the hill onto that straightaway. There's no good reason for the speed drop, since downtown starts on the opposite bank. and there aren't any major businesses on the stretch. It forces you to ride the brakes for about a quarter mile, too.

Top of hill, before curve.

Looking down the hill.

Mountain conceals bridge. Notice Speed Limit sign is highly visible, at least.

Cop sits here.

It's so common to see, I'm surprised Google didn't get a picture of it.

Edit: I've done my fair share of warning people about that one. If I'm going up the hill and just saw the cop, I flash my fogs at anyone racing downhill. Flashing fogs is a lot nicer than brights, by the way. Comes off as much more polite, too, if you're just trying to remind someone to dim their brights at night.

Edit: Typo.

[–]shankinstuff 17 points18 points ago

I think the trap is actually being in Lynchburg itself...

[–]EndymionAwake 25 points26 points ago

Oh come on, Lynchburg sounds like a nice cheerful place. Just look at the name: clearly it is a place that has a community that likes to go outside and get things done together as a group.

[–]Pikah 2 points3 points ago

Yep, usually 6/10 times going down that road there's a cop to the side waiting. Another spot would be from Madison Heights across the bridge, it's a lot steeper of a hill too.

[–]wutitdopikachu 55 points56 points ago

The one time I got caught at a speed trap was on a 25mph road at the bottom of a hill. T_T

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

"I wasn't speeding! Honest! I just hadn't slowed yet!"

Seems legit...

[–]Grouplover 9 points10 points ago

That is exactly how I got a speeding ticket last week. I was coming down the top of a hill, and the police were way ahead at the bottom. I had just looked at my speedometer and was slowing down, but the popo was already stepping into the street...buuut I was going faster than I usually do on that hill.

[–]istilldrinkpbr 6 points7 points ago

I actual think his comment is valid. Stop being such a cunt.

[–]Cptn_Hook 8 points9 points ago

I got a ticket on a stretch of road where the speed dropped from 55 to 45 and then went back up to 55 in about half a mile. There was nothing to warrant the drop in speed, and far busier intersections and stretches of that same road had maintained the limit of 55 for miles back. I'm convinced it was put in specifically as a speed trap, and judging by the officer's combination of boredom and annoyance at my pointing out the unnecessary change, I wasn't the first to come to that conclusion.

[–]jkerman 3 points4 points ago

Theres probably a driveway that requires large trucks to use it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

No dude, that is illegal and will get thrown out in most states.

[–]Triassic_Bark 9 points10 points ago

So, it's a trap because they park where people are more likely to be speeding? Seems obvious to me, not conspiratorial.

[–]rebo 5 points6 points ago*

They should park where accident rates indicate there is a problem. If many people are speeding in a particular spot this is more indicative that the speed limit is not appropriate for that stretch of road.

[–]bw1870 4 points5 points ago

Unfortunately, speeding tickets aren't really about safety, but rather just to raise revenue for the city.

[–]SwampySoccerField 6 points7 points ago

I want to say something awe inspiring in a meaningful way that accentuates your comment but the only thing that comes to mind is the thought of my nodding in agreement and saying "yup... hero."

[–]luke1014 38 points39 points ago

Do you all really drive the speed limit? I do about 15 over on the highway and about 5-10 over in residential areas.

[–]Tenshik 16 points17 points ago

Same, these are the demographic that got worked up over speeding though. The selection bias is in effect here. So all the ones that saw someone speed felt the need to come in and comment and humblebrag over their civil obedience as they verbally and matter of factly beat off the dude next to them who shares the same sentiment. Normal people just looked at the picture, laughed and moved on.

[–]Digital-Intrusion 2 points3 points ago

Caught speeding, quite right.

[–]themightybaron 2 points3 points ago

Maybe he could just slow the fuck down instead.

[–]bryandenny71 2 points3 points ago

Or he could just drive the fucking speed limit.

[–]Rajio 26 points27 points ago

Thats fine. Either way people slow the fuck down.

[–]Toenails100 11 points12 points ago

until they pass the speed trap anyway

[–]pippofin 7 points8 points ago

Well he was speeding so he deserves it

[–]AntonChigurh85 7 points8 points ago

Your fat cunt brother shouldn't have been speeding in the first place.

[–]oduska 69 points70 points ago

Why not just drive the speed limit? Can someone explain why this sign is necessary?

[–]R-L 36 points37 points ago

So I can get to the next red light first.

[–][deleted] 113 points114 points ago

Because FUCK THE POLICE FIGHT THE POWER #OCCUPYSTREETCORNERS

[–]bamdrew 16 points17 points ago*

I'm a slow driver and I've been ticketed at 'speed traps' before.

I have twice been pulled over and ticketed along the same stretch of four lane highway that changes abruptly from 65 mph (car traffic typically going 70-75) down to 55 mph in a new township/county. This change occurs while going down a long hill, and if you're in traffic or at night you can easily miss or ignore the 55 mph signs, as they are a ways off the road. Police cars camp out behind things and chase down their prey. First time I was ticketed for 70 in a 55, second time for 65 in a 55. Both were pricey tickets (>$150); both times I was hardly driving an unsafe speed for a four lane highway with a large median in the middle of nowhere... and thats why its a trap.

(ninja edit for spelling)

[–]ShakaUVM 1 point2 points ago

In San Francisco, they arrested a guy who was driving in front of the meter maids putting coins in the meters of people whose time had expired.

Pretending that the meter maids and traffic cops are anything but a revenue service is, well, not true.

[–]somecleverusername62 45 points46 points ago

if you don't want to get caught in a speed trap, then don't speed.

[–]acepiloto 21 points22 points ago

That'd just be too easy...

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

[–]heavyhorse 4 points5 points ago

he was breaking the law. should we all protest in his defense?

[–]professorberrynibble 16 points17 points ago

Reddit: Download all the games, movies, music, etc. you want, and smoke all the marijuana you can find, but IF YOU SPEED YOU ARE A BAD PERSON AND SHOULD DIE

[–]Dont_have_name 29 points30 points ago

People killed from illegal downloads in 2009: 0
People killed from speeding related accidents in 2009: 10,591

[–]SingleShotcz 1 point2 points ago

2 guys in Perth Australia did this, and then after the speed camera they collected change in return for the warning. They got fined something to the extent of 300k $AU and only just got away with no jail time.

[–]retroracer 1 point2 points ago

Why can't people just post these and let them be? Why does it always have to be your friend or sibling?

[–]SwampySoccerField 2 points3 points ago

People will do anything for acknowledgement and praise.

[–]filthgrinder[!] 1 point2 points ago

Cops ahead of what?? What???? WHAT?? I MUST KNOW!

[–]Judy-Lee 1 point2 points ago

We used to do this as kids, One of us would hold the sign and about 100ft down the road another would have a big bucket and the locals would throw out change as they went by. The Blue Meanies knew we were there, and even spoke to us once or twice saying anything that discouraged speeding was okay by them.... wow, can't imagine that happening today. I must be getting old :-)

[–]CGord 1 point2 points ago

And old story: Have a friend a ways after the speed trap with a bucket or similar for holding change, and a large sign that says YOU'RE WELCOME.

[–]IHv2RtrnSumVdeotapes 1 point2 points ago

I have my speed trap areas laid out for when I'm off to work or coming home. I have 5 total areas where cops hide and hang out. I always give a mile past the speed trap because they like to change it up and sit a little ahead or behind their standard spot.

[–]Biddleman 1 point2 points ago

It's actually a good thing to warn people of cops being ahead. They slow down in that area... which is what we want. I often after seeing a speed trap watch my speed more carefully, and wouldn't be surprised if others did too.

[–]CactusSC2 1 point2 points ago

In this case, when its obviously a speed trap (which he knows because he received a ticket) then he's at best, spending his time preventing others from making the same mistake he made and at worst, just wasting his day.

But in general, flashing cars to notify them that a police officer is ahead may seem harmless, but if you don't know what the cop is doing ahead, its a mistake. Just because a cop parks his car doesn't mean he's trying to trick innocent people into speeding to fill some ticket quota. Sometimes they're on a stationary post on the lookout for that car that just robbed a gas station, or kidnapped a child, or hit a pedestrian and took off, or is already known to be transporting illegal weapons. People are so anti-police giving a stranger a speeding ticket, that they are willing to give any of those other people a chance to avoid the police officer altogether.

[–]wildlovemonkey 1 point2 points ago

Maybe he should just slow the fuck down.
