Generally, I hear "circlejerk" used to really mean "stop talking about what I don't like." I see no problem with someone saying that other people are "awesome."
Subreddits are made up of thousands of users--if an individual within that subreddit says "Hey, I love /r/subreddit!" that is not really self congratulatory, as it refers to the other 600,000 users who also participate.
