Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

What's really cool is if you get close ups (need to be very high quality) of Vermeer's work, his brush strokes are very clear, nearly patches of color.

Can you explain what that means? Genuinely wondering.

Vermeer painted in layers of color, giving a depth and realistic quality to the colors of the painting

Self-portrait of Rembrandt if I'm not mistaken.

Well, here's the Italian Renaissance version, which has the advantage of actually being exactly that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Parmigianino_Selfportrait.jpg

The simulated strokes used on the hand and camera don't quite match the strokes in the rest of the painting.

Always wondered why she hides all her hair in scarves like that. Then makes it look like a ponytail.

[–]joshuag 22 points23 points ago

Yeah, Vermeer was considered pretty talented.

This is shopped. I can tell by the craquelure and from having seen quite a few Baroque paintings in my time.

In all seriousness, open up a photo of the original Girl With a Pearl Earring and compare the craquelure of the two. Identical, and you can tell that the hand and camera are just shopped in with a weird filter.

All in all, though, it's a pretty great statement and good enough to get the point across. A+ would dissect again.

that's fantastic.

I usually open up like 6 links and then close them all after looking at them for a second. I saw this pic, realized what the joke was, closed it, and then just sat there thinking about the face. had to reopen it and just stare at it. It's cool to be able to draw/paint extremely well, but it's like the painting has a fkin soul in it

I have found her image fascinating ever since I was a child.

[–]midnightbean 1 point2 points ago

You have a soul too then, or at least a sensitive enough one to perceive it which is fantastic. The current age is very harsh and quick, you often see elderly people react to things like this and young people blow past it because there was no initial gimmick.

I do think if more people slowed down and gave more paintings a chance, especially in person, they would be fulfilled. Painting is much more than technical prowess. And in fact, all that detailed stuff, 'trompe l'oeil', etc. is really pretty simple minded if not coupled with other elements to enhance its power for something greater than to be impressed.

As a painter myself I have one thing to say, see Rembrandt in person. Rembrandt captures not only soul but flesh and aesthetic. His beauty is a sincere visceral one, and one of a sort of dark magic. Online images are too yellowed and weak.

I got the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this particular painting in person many years ago. It is an amazing piece.

My social studies teacher keeps using this to point out symbolism

Apparently (as he says) its a bout a young girl being sent off to be apprenticed, never to see her family until years later.

She has no idea whats going to happen to her and all she has are her clothes and the pearl earing.

Times we've been given this exact speech so far: 5
