I would have up voted you and your novelty account, but you miss the subtle nuances of the aforementioned cartoon dogs speech patterns. The dog often pronounces L's as R's, similar to a racist archetype of a heavily accented Asian person, although the dog has a much deeper voice. Needless to say, the dog would have said "Rod Bress America." Overall, the execution was flawed and the effort was minimal. I give your novelty account a 3/10- Not the worst but hardly memorable.

Oh and you spelled Scooby wrong.

[–]Scoobee_Doo 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Someone had already taken Scooby, so I improvised, and no one seemed to notice. Until you, anyway. The original point of him was to use him all the rime and each post I'd start a word with R as subtly as possible. Preferably one that started with a T so that it would pass for a typo. Ideally, someone would point the typo without reading the username.

What ended up happening was that I didn't often have comments to make that were long enough to use an R so subtly, and ended up just using him as a go-to alt and commenting on Scooby-related things.

Once, just once, I'd like to see one of them start running at someone and the person just doesn't move. Just to see what the 'monster's' reaction would be.

Scaring people a la Scooby Doo Villain is a crime, just FYI.

"Menacing (in some states known as brandishing) is a violent crime in most state jurisdictions of the United States. Although the wording and degrees of offense vary slightly from state to state, the criminal act of menacing generally consists of displaying a weapon to a person with the intention of threatening them with bodily harm from said weapon."

Yeah, but how often do they have a weapon?

[–]sgtpppr 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You ever been stared down by a charging swamp monster? I've never seen a deadlier weapon and it haunts me to this day.

[–]archangel913 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only two problems:

1) Swamp monsters don't carry weapons.

2) If a swamp monster is charging at you, that bitch is doing quite a bit more than staring you down.

[–]sgtpppr 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was a joke. The point was its stare was so scary that it is a weapon of terror. I can't believe I'm looping back to this... Failed joke.

[–]halfhartedgrammarguy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The swamp monster IS the weapon.

[–]resutidder 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

charging at you

Technically this is all that is needed for an assault charge. Thus it often comes down to a he-said-she-said of whether you've "charged" someone.

They're usually just some dweeb in a zombie costume.

I remain convinced that the entire Scooby gang is just a bunch of hippies that consume large amounts of LSD. It would explain pretty much everything in the series, from why they get scared of such retarded looking costumes, all the way to the talking dog. It's all just one large, particularly odd acid trip.

[–]UpTheIron 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh shit, no man, Me and my friend figured this out. Same scenario, but shaggy is the only one that exists, along with the corpse of scooby. He was an old hippy from the 60's, and his dog was the only thing he really cared about.

After Scooby died, shaggy, wracked with grief, broke into old abandoned houses, and tripped on loads of old acid, with the corpse of his long dead dog scooby.

His "Friends" we're just representations of how he saw people in his days as a free lovin hippy. The prude girl, the dork, and the uptight guy who toed the line. He imagined himself solving mysteries because he felt subconsciously that his life had no purpose, therefore by helping people solve their problems, he once again had a reason for living.

[–]h2sbacteria 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on whether the Scythe was real and the fact that a reasonable person should know that it's a costume and nothing to be scared of... And intent might be hard to show, as the intent may be simply to amuse rather than to threaten, harass, or annoy.

[–]sgtpppr 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Am I really debating the legal ramifications of Scooby Doo villains scaring people? I need to seriously rethink my life. Maybe I will look back on this as the turning point where I decided to stop being retarded. I seriously doubt it though.

[–]h2sbacteria 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know. Under the current law, it's more than likely if the police got called you would end up with a misdemeanour charge.

[–]ginja_ninja 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All it would take is one death by heart attack for them to throw the book at you though.

[–]h2sbacteria 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True enough. But I don't think it would be that likely... Though plausible

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmmm. I have a bit of a legal issue with this, as menacing is usually considered "through statement or action imparting fear of iminent death or physical injury on another." No mention of a weapon is involved.

But I'm also doing this through pain meds, and my law notes are all the way over there on the bookshelf.

[–]Wazowski 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As other people pointed out, scaring people and disrupting businesses because you're a disgruntled former employee is an actual crime. I used to watch a lot of Scooby Doo, and I can't think of any villains that were wrongly prosecuted. There was this one episode where the haunted amusement park was just due to a malfunctioning robot, but the police didn't intervene.

That guy in the ape costume wasn't just playing a harmless prank, man. He was the Carl the stunt man. He was angry about not getting the lead part in the movie, so he terrorized the entire crew by dressing up as the legendary ape monster, hoping to stop production on the film.

The "Ghost Clown" that was causing mysterious injuries at the circus was actually Harry the Hypnotist. He was a former employee of the circus who had been caught stealing and sent to jail. While he was dressed up as a ghost he was acting out his revenge scheme by sabotaging and maiming the other circus performers.

I could go on and on.

These are real and serious crimes, and I think you and GraphJam.com owe Mystery, Inc. a little more fucking respect.

If it was reported in a newspaper in 1994, the article hasn't made it onto the internet yet:

It's false.

[–]slevadon 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yup. +1 for media literacy

[–]Abomonog 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You do realize that before 2001 this was something that would be treated as a minor indecent and would have maybe got a mention on the police blotter in most towns. Meaning it very likely would never have been posted on the internet. It could have also happened at anytime between now and the early 70's, a time that existed before the internet.

That you could not find an internet reference does not prove it is false.

In fact, this is a practical joke that has very likely happened at least 45 times since 1966, and it will probably happen once this year on a very specific date. Probably more considering it is a rather common Halloween practical joke.

[–]Reductive 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm responding to the specific claims in the post. If it had said "someone somewhere once scared old people" instead of "a man in LA in 1994 scared old people" your analysis would apply a little more. Additionally, many newspapers have had "weird news" type sections which would feature incidents like this since way before 2001.

[–]Abomonog 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My problem was that the "Grim Reaper joke" tale is old. So old that I had heard of it before the 1994 date claimed on the pic. This and the "Michael Meyers stalker" (someone dresses up as Michael Meyers and follows teens around the streets) are so old and common that very likely someone somewhere called the police over each every year.

It happened. It happened multiple times. The only question is; did it really happen in LA in 1994?

[–]iatean8 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well you could go and make sure to validate that statement if you'd like. It would be pretty fun.

[–]thekilljoy 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Harassment and Tresspassing would be the most obvious. If the police were feeling really teneacious, you could get away with a 'terrorist threats' charge, but I doubt the judge would let it fly even if it's valid on implication.

Understand: terrorist threats is a misdemeanor offense and is the classification for making "threats intended to cause terror in the target/victim". Such as "I will kill/rape/hurt/sodomize/etc you".

Sauces: Both my parents are Retired LAPD (my dad has mentioned the Grim Reaper story before, so either it's an LAPD legend or it did happen) and my bestfriend was charged with Terrorist Threats for threatening to stab someone.

EDIT: additional sauce: i was charged with trespassing for being on a property, even though no signs/persons advised me otherwise. (Abandoned property without trespassing signage.)

[–]Lord_Pimpington 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, I actually do this, costume and weapon, but I don't mess with old people for fear of giving them a heart attack. Do you think I could actually be arrested?

[–]thekilljoy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As long as you aren't running amuck on other people's property (stick to sidewalks yo) and not making any obviously threatening/implying gestures towards people and no one should have any rightful beefs.

That said; there are laws in many places regarding obstructing one's face (wearing a mask or balaclava, for example) in public, so keep that bit in mind. (Halloween's yer great big exemption day on this front.)

[–]zeppelinfromled 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The trespassing thing without signs is a highly state-dependent thing (obviously CA law would apply here, I just think it's interesting). For instance, in New Hampshire, I can come onto your property and hunt, as long as you don't have "no hunting" signs and as long as I'm at least the legally required distance from roads and buildings.

[–]thekilljoy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. They got me on the fact the property had been abandoned for 10+ years and was now considered state property, so the state was able to proclaim me as a trespasser. All in all it was a pretty petty thing to begin with, and since it was a minor misdemeanor against a minor, there was no point to fighting. I just served my CS at a library and it disappeared when I turned 18.

So what is the definition of trolling, exactly? Because apparently, according to reddit at least, it's a placeholder for any verb.

Unlike everyone else, I am not obsessed with mandating validity in everything I see so that I can feel better about myself by seeming smart on the internet, and so I can appreciate that, whether or not this situation actually happened, it is still funny. Since this is r/funny, you get an upvote. Good day to you, sir.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personally, I don't think it's about feeling smart. It's about trying to know when your being faked out. It's easy to make up stories such as these, it kind of ruins it when you realize it's just a bunch of made up stories.

[–]cannedm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess I don't understand that. Funny is in the idea, it doesn't really need to have happened to still be funny, otherwise comedy movies wouldn't exist.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But they don't claim to be true. I feel it's different when their claiming it to be true, but it isn't. Like when you watch a movie because it's "based of real life," but then you find out there's little to no resemble between the movie and actual events.

I was going to do this once. My plan was to stand on the side of the road pointing at cars and following them with my finger at night in areas where you couldnt see me that much, but then i realized people might try to kill me with there cars out of fear.

edit* With a grim reaper suit and sickle.

Is the New York Times a reliable source?

This article about a serial killer is from 2010 but says he had been eluding police for "well over two decades".

I know he didn't dress up like the Grim Reaper, but that was his nickname, and his story was probably exaggerated into posts like this one.

My friend in Las Vegas told me he was walking home with this girl and a tweaker dressed as the grim reaper followed them back to his house. He said he looked out his window and an old black lady with a robe on was in his front yard tapping on his window with a scythe, pointing at him. He told me this carried on for half an hour before he went outside and yelled at her to leave.

I work at a nursing home and yesterday while I was cleaning a living room, one of the residents was saying something slightly unintelligible and leaning back and forth in her wheelchair. As I was walking out of the room, I actually caught that she was saying "Kill us, Lord."

Honestly, one of the most disturbing things that I have noticed/seen/whatever while working there. Hopefully I'll be experiencing a vocational paradigm shift soon.
