An Atlas V 401 launching the LRO and the LCROSS. The Atlas V will eventually launch the (crewed) CST-100 capsule.

A Delta IV Heavy launching a DOD satellite. The Delta IV Heavy will be the first vehicle to launch the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle.

A Falcon 9 launching a Dragon capsule. The Dragon capsule is in the process of being human-rated for launch.

[–]danman11 5 points6 points ago

Can't wait for the Falcon launch planned for late April.

[–]Oceanfloorsmusic 1 point2 points ago

First I read this as "I can't wait for the falcon punch planned for late April", then went back and read it as "I can't wait for the falcon lunch planned for late April." I think I need to get off reddit.

[–]hydrogenous 1 point2 points ago

I wish I remembered where the article was, but SpaceX came out and basically said that they are aiming for April, but it may end up being delayed... That being said, I'm excited as well. Is it going to the ISS?

"how many rivers we had to cross before we found our way..." -C.S.

[–]thesnoosnoo 3 points4 points ago

SpaceX cape employee here, we are awaiting NASA approval on that date, but so far it looks likely that we will be able to make that date on our end.

[–]I3ombastic 0 points1 point ago

Hello SpaceX cape employee! We here in Hawthorne send our warmest regards.

[–]thesnoosnoo 0 points1 point ago

uh oh! people from the home office! scuttles away

[–]I3ombastic 1 point2 points ago

The falcon 9 set to launch in April is carrying a dragon capsule that will be performing the COTS 2/3 mission. Its purpose is to prove that space x is capable of transferring cargo to and from the ISS. The capsule will maneuver into a berthing position with the ISS, and after extensive tests, if NASA gives the green light, it will berth with the station using the ISS s robotic arm.

[–]jco310 0 points1 point ago

You know, before bothering to venture over there, I thought that this is what /r/spacedicks was all about. Needless to say, I was wrong.

[–]danman11 0 points1 point ago

Yes, its going to be the first American vehicle to visit since the Space Shuttle.

[–]RealRedditUser -3 points-2 points ago

all those rockets look like penis! PENIS! at least the Shuttle looked cooler.

[–]knowhatimsayin 2 points3 points ago

That's strange, I didn't think that?

[–]cchase 0 points1 point ago

Shouldn't they have some sort of stabilizer wing(s)?

[–]funkmasterflex 1 point2 points ago

They are kept stable by adjusting the exhaust direction

[–]welshyboy101 27 points28 points ago

Am I the only one who's noticed the smiley face in the reflection?

[–]Plow_King 6 points7 points ago

nice find =)

[–]krimshail 2 points3 points ago

http://i.imgur.com/gwHCB.jpg um did not see the smiley face

[–]welshyboy101 1 point2 points ago

Wow, thats sorta weird, it's right on the ship bro, look http://imgur.com/x9GMv

[–]krimshail 1 point2 points ago

nice i dont know were the edit i got came from but it was my background for months

[–]r-howtonotgiveafuck -1 points0 points ago

Did you notice the shuttle?

[–]welshyboy101 0 points1 point ago

Oh shit, thats what that is ....

[–]ara_p 4 points5 points ago

Just curious, but why is the gantry bigger than the shuttle? Isn't only used as scaffolding to bring people up and down?

[–]WhopperNoPickles 19 points20 points ago

The gantry is a giant clean room. Most of the shuttle's cargo is not loaded until it is on the pad, in order to make it easier to transport.

Source: I'm a NASA contractor and I sit next to the guy who used to work on it.

[–]ara_p 5 points6 points ago

Well that makes complete sense. Thanks for clearing that up!

Edit: Also, why I love Reddit: ask a question about NASA, get an answer from NASA.

[–]WhopperNoPickles 2 points3 points ago

Always here to help!

[–]B1Gpimpin 2 points3 points ago

you could probably do a good AMA

[–]WhopperNoPickles 1 point2 points ago

sure thing...but I should probably wait until the astronaut's AMA dies down a bit. I 'm sure I would be greatly overshadowed! Haha

[–]JayKaos 1 point2 points ago

Wait what

Shit it's times like this I wish I still subscribed to r/IAmA. Then I remember the pages and pages of AmA requests for boring celebrities.

[–]lostpatrol 0 points1 point ago

Would you do the same work for the chinese if they asked you to help put one together?

[–]drakemac333 0 points1 point ago

No actually. The gantry is really more of a grid system for moving things in between the ship and ground control.

[–]revolutionwithin 2 points3 points ago

The one on top pumps fuel into the external fuel tank, probably helps stabilize/hold the shuttle upright until just before launch too? Not so sure about the second one tho

[–]ara_p 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I thought about the stabilization, but then, the whole assembly rolls to the launch site on its own, sans gantry. Not sure you'd need that much structure to support fuel lines either--but then, I'm no rocket scientist, just really curious. :)

[–]revolutionwithin 0 points1 point ago

It could provide electrical power as well until they wind up the shuttle, all I know for sure is that the Space Shuttle is fucking cool.

EDIT: Fail grammar fixed

[–]ara_p 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. Very cool. :)

[–]Plow_King 0 points1 point ago

the shuttle doesn't run on wind up power. now you know another thing about this fucking cool thing. =)

[–]revolutionwithin 0 points1 point ago

lol of course not, just a figure of speech. maybe some day

[–]Plow_King 0 points1 point ago

see, have more faith in yourself, you probably know lots of things for sure!

[–]lotto1215 1 point2 points ago

Was this STS-135? I was in Cocoa Beach that week and watched it from the beach. Was my second live launch, but it was still just as entertaining. My grandpa used to work on the boosters. Sad thats its over. Everyone needed to watch a launch live, its the most amazing thing ever. Will blow your mind to think a few people just a couple miles down the beach are with you one second, and the next barreling into the heavens. The noise, the smoke, the flame, its thing of beauty to watch something like that happen.

RIP all those whose perished during missions and training. RIP Space Transport System.

[–]Hoodooz39 0 points1 point ago

I was at STS-135 and it was my first launch. Atlantis holds a special place in my heart.

[–]firestingwisher 0 points1 point ago

I went down for STS-128, it was Space Shuttle Discovery. Got tickets to the KSC and everything. Was supposed to be the LAST night launch. Storms started moving in about an hour before midnight, cleared up, and came back. Launch was scrubbed. I'm still upset over that. It was in August of 09.

[–]Shitty_Watercolour 12 points13 points ago

[–]bcarmeli 0 points1 point ago

Alright man, you've had this account for a while and you've shown no signs of improvement, I'm afraid this mightn't be your calling.

[–]Fantasticriss 0 points1 point ago

it is definitely yours though.

[–]bcarmeli 0 points1 point ago

Twould appear I've commented on the wrong mans post. Sincerest apologies

[–]Fantasticriss 0 points1 point ago

hahahaha oh man its all good. I was pretty confused. Have an imperial walker dog

[–]TMox 2 points3 points ago

I saw that thing blast off once--utterly, overwhelmingly awesome. Filled me with pride in humanity... for about half an hour.

[–]revolutionwithin 0 points1 point ago

And then you remember humanity...

[–]hobojoe18 2 points3 points ago

Anyone have a super high-res version of this photo?

[–]torokunai 2 points3 points ago

fwiw, if you're a taxpayer the ~$200B shuttle program will be costing you $5/month in interest costs for the rest of your taxpaying days.

HAND.

[–]CzechVar 18 points19 points ago

These get me choked up every time. A fucking shame it is. A fucking shame.

[–]SirAngusDerpington 27 points28 points ago

Not really. The Space Shuttle was a failed experiment. It was initially introduced to as a cost-effective reusable space exploration vehicle. Instead, the maintenance of those things just hemorrhaged money. It would've been so much cheaper to simply use 1-time disposable modules like the Apollo.

The mothballing of the Space Shuttle simply paves the way for more efficient vehicles, preferably one that won't get a crew of 7 killed because a chunk of ice fell on its wing during launch.

[–]CzechVar 9 points10 points ago

These facts while I don't have the knowledge to say anything to their validity are beside my point, it was more, that our place in the world stage of the big, bad-ass, Americans shuttle wielding people that took the Hubble to space has now passed.

More on this would be, there should have been a replacement day 1 after decommissioning them. While I was not an avid follower of space programs, it always brought me pride to hear of another launch in the news, the occasional NASA TV, or science article of what was going on thanks to the US and the Shuttle was, an inspiration to me in ways, a beacon of hope, and now that is gone.

That is the shame, that I was referring to, and the sadness when viewing these pictures of time, that is now gone and passed.

[–]SirAngusDerpington 9 points10 points ago

I wouldn't look at it that way. America was, still is, and will be the leading frontier when it comes to space exploration. NASA has launched more deep space exploration probes than anyone else on the planet, and still has plans for more.

There is a replacement coming), just not as soon as you would have liked. I should note that this program was announced by Bush during the start of his second term as President, so it's not like NASA waited until the day after the Shuttles were decommissioned to begin drawing another one. These things take time to develop, and they're trying to learn from the mistakes they've made in the past with regards to the Space shuttle. Shuttles were becoming way too big of a burden to continue supporting, especially in these awful economic times where the federal budget has more important things to take care of.

It's not a set back, it's a crucial step forward. If you ever for a second doubt America's place in space exploration, just look up to the moon, and remember that you're the only ones with a flag on it.

[–]hydrogenous 2 points3 points ago

Link gets screwy when reddit coding:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(spacecraft)

[–]danman11 1 point2 points ago

No mention of Commercial Crew?

[–]captmonkey 1 point2 points ago

"More on this would be, there should have been a replacement day 1 after decommissioning them."

You mean like we did with the Space Shuttle? Oh wait... it was almost 10 years after Apollo ended that we launched the shuttle... I hate to be kind of a dick about it, but you said so yourself, you weren't an avid follower of the space program. Shutting down one and then devoting all of NASA's time and energy to the next one is just how things have always been. Even in the 60s, when we were working on a deadline, there was a 2 year gap between Mercury and Gemini and another 2 year gap between Gemini and Apollo.

I just get annoyed at this idea of "Oh no! We ended the space program!" We're just moving on to something else, and it's high time we did. While the shuttle looks cool, it just couldn't do things like take us to the Moon or Mars. It was boring and overly expensive. Think of it like trading in driving your old worn mini-van around the neighborhood to taking a fancy new sports car on a cross-country road trip. I've waited my whole life for a new US space vehicle, since I was born shortly after the Space Shuttle's maiden voyage, and now we're finally going to get to see one.

[–]CzechVar 0 points1 point ago

The way you said it was dick, but informing people never is. This was meant to be a layman's perspective not a factual way things are view point. Past that, "just the way things are" maybe that needs to change, why is it so slow? Money. Motivation, which is what I think I am trying to drive at here

I've not heard this perspective, and frankly it seems right on, my only question now would be, is what we are doing now, as innovative as what we did back then? My, layman understanding is that this is similar technology that was used in the first manned missions. I understand that there must be many improvements in that, but is it as innovative? past that, should it be taking us so long?

[–]captmonkey 0 points1 point ago

Yes, money has a lot to do with that. However, it's not just that NASA doesn't have the money to be footing the bill for two space programs at once. It only has so many facilities, like the vehicle assembly building (one of the largest buildings on Earth by volume) and launch facilities and it only has so many scientists and engineers and other support staff. It would take a much larger investment in NASA (beyond the penny on the dollar suggested) to be able to run two programs at once safely and efficiently. So, the way it's always been is to shut one down, then focus all the people and money on the next one so they can retrofit things like the VAB for the new launch vehicles and make sure their best people are working on it. I really don't think we'll see another 10-year gap like we saw between Apollo and the Shuttle and as long as we don't, I feel like we're coming out ahead.

[–]knowhatimsayin -2 points-1 points ago

Best argument I heard for keeping the space program around was to inspire children. Who didn't want to be an astronaut growing up?
How many of those children do grow up to be scientists because of that small seed? Probably small, but it's sad kids now can't even DREAM to walk on the moon.

Actually I'm sure they tell them they still could.

[–]kerbinoid 0 points1 point ago

Your space program hasn't been cut.

[–]danman11 -1 points0 points ago*

When Neil Armstrong was a kid we're we flying men to the moon yet? No.

[–]drakemac333 -3 points-2 points ago

its retarded to blow millions on shit just because you think kids dream about being an astronaut

[–]huxrules 0 points1 point ago

Yes and no. I like to point out that if there was no shuttle then there wouldn't have been Hubble repair missions. If the Hubble hadn't been repaired then astronomy would be at least 20 years behind where it is now. What is the value of all the Hubble data worth? To me it's at least the cost of the entire shuttle program and 14 lives. If you can think like that then the space station - which was launched mostly by the shuttle - is just gravy.

[–]seannyboy06 2 points3 points ago

You and me both pal. My aunt was an engineer for NASA and my grandfather worked Mission Control during the first part of Apollo, and watching one of these hulking, clumsy beasts leave the ground is one of my favorite childhood memories.

Tried to make it out for the last launch, but the constant rescheduling made it impossible. I'm still pretty sad about it.

[–]Lillipout 2 points3 points ago

This will be an unpopular opinion on reddit, but discontinuing the Space Shuttle was the best thing to happen to the US space program in 20 years.

[–]I_wwebsite 5 points6 points ago

"Kids, once upon a time we used to have space shuttles and would actually go to space. Back when space wasn't just about cell phone satellites and war"

[–]orangeblood 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, space exploration has always been a little bit about war.

[–]drakemac333 2 points3 points ago

no dude they created NASA for the children

[–]sirernestshackleton 0 points1 point ago

Much like Wu-Tang.

[–]drakemac333 0 points1 point ago

swag I guess

[–]kerbinoid 1 point2 points ago

You still go to space you fucking moron. There are Americans in space RIGHT NOW!

[–]UnoriginalMike 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. The guy below your comment here doesn't seem to get it. We have likely seen an end to space exploration in this generation. No money for science and education, lots for things that ultimately hurt the country. Ah well. It was good to be on top while it lasted.

[–]danman11 1 point2 points ago

"We have likely seen an end to space exploration in this generation."

This could only be the opinion of the uninformed.

[–]UnoriginalMike 0 points1 point ago

God I hope so.

[–]devouredbylogic 2 points3 points ago

People are so mis-informed and naive. Yes the space shuttle program is over, but what people need to realize is how old and outdated the space shuttle was. Not to mention how expensive the shuttles were to maintain. NASA will be using the Atlas V and Delta IV heavy for manned missions much sooner then most people realize. They are going to be single use capsules and cost much less then the shuttles.

[–]Aydarsh 1 point2 points ago

What about the SLS?

[–]devouredbylogic 1 point2 points ago

The SLS isn't set to even have a manned mission until August 2019. We could be seeing manned missions from the Atlas and Delta platforms by 2014.

[–]danman11 0 points1 point ago

They were old but in great operational shape and had received numerous upgrades through the years. They were retired because their capabilities were no longer needed.

and then transported to the launch pad on this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crawler-transporter

[–]_edd 1 point2 points ago

There is an assembly building where the space shuttle is hoisted (i believe) from the horizontal position to vertical. Then they attach the boosters and what not, and then the readied shuttle is put on a moving platform/launch pad vehicle and moved at ~5mph to the tower to be launched.

(Sorry for the informal response/if anything isn't completely right. I responded with a culmination of what I could remember.)

Welcome to my desktop!

[–]Hoodooz39 0 points1 point ago

I took my kids to see the last launch. It was my first launch as well, and a bucket list kind of thing, so I watched the launch schedule anxiously as they kept pushing it back, and then the day of, they didn't clear for launch until about an hour before because of the weather. Awesome does not even begin to describe it.

The next month, my parents took my kids on a cruise and they had a lot of fun. But I asked them if any one moment of the cruise matched the excitement of seeing that shuttle lift off and they both immediately and emphatically said, "NO!"

[–]Plow_King 0 points1 point ago

i was on that cruise. they said the opposite thing to your parents.

your kids are bright.

[–]Hoodooz39 0 points1 point ago

Nah, my parents are cool and know where it's at. In fact, I'm pretty sure my mom has shuttle launch envy.

[–]blitzkrieg564 0 points1 point ago

It would be awesome to be a cameraman for NASA.

What a disaster of a program, it does not get much worse than the Suttle program.

  1. Ship could not get to outer space
  2. Cost was stupid high
  3. Innovation was no existent
  4. Was an old design (50 fucking years old)
  5. Was very dangerous

Thank god this is a dead program.

Want to go to Space? Look at free people to do it, not the State.

Proud to say I got to see this shuttle go up on a family trip to Florida in 09. Sad to think that others will no longer get to do the same.
