I've never been able to see 3D films or pictures due to the fact I'm partially blind in one eye, but this is the first time I actually can see the illusion in action, its really quite mesmerising. This deffo not WTF, but GAF (great as fuck)!! :D

[–]snuffl3s 17 points18 points ago

WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS?! How does shaking an image back and forth make it 3D?!

[–]markycapone 14 points15 points ago

it simulates how each eye sees an image. it tricks your brain into seeing depth.

[–]rnelsonee 8 points9 points ago

Objects closer to you move across your field of vision quicker (background stays in your field longer).

The person can't actually draw something moving without using lots of new images, so trick #1 is to 'pivot' the point of view, not 'strafe' it straight across. For example, look at the top-right corner of your monitor/phone now, and move in a circle counter-clockwise around it. Note the screen moves left but the background wall moves to the right. Same in this picture; the foreground (monster) goes left while the background goes right. This way, once you pivot a little, you can just pivot back. And keep repeating that, without having to draw more background.

The best trick is that there aren't multiple images used. Normally when you move, new 'background information' should show up - what was behind the monster's head should pop out. Instead the author uses image stretching to simulate new data coming 'out' from behind the monster. So you divide the image into what moves left, what moves right, and at the edges, the images compresses/stretches.

MAGIC! Or it's actually two slightly different images, take your pick.

[–]hoikarnage 0 points1 point ago

No, I'm pretty sure you were right the first time.

[–]Paper_Champ 1 point2 points ago

Its treating us like pigeons who dont have depth perception so they bob up and down to see distance. only here, the picture is moving to stimulate distance.

From this link that was posted up higher:

http://pinktentacle.com/2009/10/animated-stereoviews-of-old-japan/

To take pictures like this, you need two identical cameras and a viewing separation of about 10°, both pointing at the right focal distance. Tricky, but possible with a nice mounting system (best if you had a way to periscope the camera viewfinders into each eye to help matching the focal distance.

Magnets.

[–]SirCannonFodder 21 points22 points ago

Wow, this one is amazing.

[–]HunterTV 0 points1 point ago

I think it's pretty cool that people are doing neat things like this and the cinemagraphs with a dated image technology.

[–]TheRedAres 0 points1 point ago

Is it normal if I start feeling dizzy?

[–]AREYOUSauRuS -4 points-3 points ago

those are pretty tight, good shit

[–]ianu 6 points7 points ago

[–]TehCyberJunkie 1 point2 points ago

Fantastic find

[–]DCMFDOOM 23 points24 points ago

I don't get how a multiple headed monster is fit for r/wtf. I could imagine if the heads were feeding on each other, but this is just bland. I've seen this shit in Disney movies.

[–]jbatch0311 7 points8 points ago

It's not fit for WTF.

[–]aprost 3 points4 points ago

Agreed. This rightfully belongs to r/trees

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

It made me think wtf when I first saw it so I think it belongs. If you want sicker shit, go to 4chan on /b/. ಠ_ಠ

[–]DCMFDOOM -1 points0 points ago

Pussy.

[–]ApologyWars 1 point2 points ago

Woah!

[–]Anopheles_stingz 1 point2 points ago

I love this new 3D Gif stuff !

[–]popsicleptik 1 point2 points ago

Just...blink a lot?

[–]huitlacoche 1 point2 points ago

That small head on the butt probably has a tough life

[–]its-the-new-style 1 point2 points ago

x/post to the more appropriate /r/imaginarymonsters

annoyingly Chrome decides that the frame rate is too fast and Gimp wont save gifs with a delay under 100ms.

Damn software, do as you're fkin told, I'm an adult damnit

[–]dorkula02 1 point2 points ago

It's cool but definitely not wtf

[–]bigmeech 1 point2 points ago

just as disturbing as it would look in 2D.

ie not disturbing at all

[–]Commander1812 1 point2 points ago

So why can't they use computer wizardry to do this at 30 times per second and get away from those 3D glasses?

[–]xxSINxx 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking this to, I wonder how animating it would work though. You would have to have 2 pics of every frame and switch back and forth between the 2 every frame as well? I really want to see someone try to get it to work.

[–]Sethream 1 point2 points ago

Why wtf? /r/woahdude is that way ------->

[–]enodllew 1 point2 points ago

Now post to /r/trees and freak them all the fuck out.

[–]Lotenn 1 point2 points ago

Anyone have proof of rule 34 of this yet?

[–]triple_slip 1 point2 points ago

Listening to Mastodon, fit suprisingly well!

[–]Isaac_Clarke_Is_Dead 1 point2 points ago

SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER

[–]realmadrid2727 1 point2 points ago

I like these little 3D gifs.

It makes me wonder though, would it be possible to make something animated (not animated like how it's animated to produce the 3D effect, I mean something like making a person walk) using the same technique?

Like, animating a dog running or something, and then applying this same thing to every frame so you have:

Frame 1 > Frame 1 3D motion > Frame 2 > Frame 2 3D motion > Frame 3 > Frame 3 3D motion ...

Would that work or would it lose its 3D effect and just look like a clusterfuck of things? It would be an awesome way to make little animated 3D shorts without the need for stupid glasses.

[–]PiggyBuffalo 0 points1 point ago

would love to see someone do this

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

yea well you know this is even cooler when stoned

[–]el_guapo_malo 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, kind of...

[–]exjentric 0 points1 point ago

Needs a NSFH (not safe for hangovers).

[–]FledglingZombie 0 points1 point ago

[–]JRockstar50 0 points1 point ago

The sound it makes is terrifying. It's like my heart racing at the sight of it.

[–]Look_at_that_Fetus 0 points1 point ago

Why did this make my balls tingle?

[–]lukini101 0 points1 point ago

Thats pretty awesome is you ask me.

[–]rodsaysgo 0 points1 point ago

you mean really fucking cool, right?

[–]TeeFer 0 points1 point ago

This is pretty much how 3D movies work...

[–]4Geist 0 points1 point ago

it's missing some rockin tits

[–]werko 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the new Zelda dragons.

[–]errerr 0 points1 point ago

Has anybody done this with a picture of San Francisco? Or Tokyo?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I was listening to dubstep when I clicked on this. It was so perfect.

[–]ListenToNestor 0 points1 point ago

It makes it kind of awesome.

[–]rail16 0 points1 point ago

No it doesn't.

[–]Herbal_Combat 0 points1 point ago

I want to admire the art, but the movement makes me nauseous.

[–]Ivalance 0 points1 point ago

Saw bunch of these on kotaku the other day. One of which had 2 rabbits in it, I thought that one was creepier because of the human hair on a rabbit thing. I actually had a nightmare the night after.

[–]icamehereforthensfw 0 points1 point ago

shake your head left to right and back continuosly at the same speed.. the pic stopped shaking.. yes i tried it..:P

[–]hoangnguyen 0 points1 point ago

Sorry. English is not my first language. What do you mean kind of disturbing?? Is this a 3D picture or just a kind of illusion??

[–]Sachleb -1 points0 points ago

I don't think the 3D effect is necessary for it to be disturbing...

[–]Ptolemis -1 points0 points ago

Kind of disturbing?

[–]Gravyness -1 points0 points ago

This is no 3D...

Loads fully

WHAT THE SORCERY1?

[–]kattyg -1 points0 points ago

..........only kind of disturbing?

[–]feeblemuffin -1 points0 points ago

nice repost, brah.

[–]Vanedictius -3 points-2 points ago

I don't find thi disturbing. Go back to your kindergarten class, kid.

[–]Vanedictius -2 points-1 points ago
