Sometimes things like this are used on autistic children; believe it or not, being secured and held like this can be very comforting for some people with autism. IIRC Temple Grandin designed a "hug machine" that calmed her down.

I'm glad you said something. my mom works with mentally challenged children and adults. she's mentioned several times that the only way to calm them down is to use something similar to this.

Exactly. My son has some sensory issues, and if he's having a bad day with it, he'll ask for the burrito, which is when I take this blanket that's stretchy and wrap him up VERY tight. He's instantly laughing and feeling better. Weirdest damn thing.

Came here to comment and see that you already have stated what I was going to say. It is used as a calming technique and when they are in this position are asked to slowly inhale and exhale. I do this to my son, but without the restraints. We just hold him down using a technique that we were taught similar to this device.

I was put in one of these once when I was refusing a shot as a kid. I can't imagine any legitimate reason for anyone but a medical professional to have them though...

Also that's not spread eagle

[–]homefried 3 points4 points ago

Same here. I was four and wouldn't take a shot and they strapped me to that motherfucker. It was terrifying.

My brother got strapped to one of these in the emergency room because he had a Lego up his nose and started freaking out when the doctor tried to get it.

I bit my tongue very badly when I was a kid. I slipped in the tub. Anyway, my parents wouldn't let them knock me out to stitch the wound up as they were worried about general anesthesia. So, I was strapped into something very much like that while my tongue was repaired. I still remember it distinctly despite it being more than thirty years ago.

CSB

[–]Type_Zero 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ouch. Did they have a valid reason to worry about the anesthesia, or did they just want you to feel it so you wouldn't slip again...

[–]Lampmonster1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well this was thirty years ago and there were still a small number of kids that just didn't wake up from general anesthesia. I think it was just a little bit being over careful on my parents part. I had a local, and honestly it wasn't bad at all. The doctors didn't think it was going to work, but I was apparently a tractable little idiot.

I was strapped in one of those when I got stitches on my head at 5. 16 years later I remember the pinning as far more traumatizing than the gash and blood.

Coming from someone who was a trouble kid with many signs of ADHD/tourette's, being tied down in one of these would certainly not have calmed me down when I was in rage-mode.

My dentist as a kid used these any time they had to put a kid under anesthesia...which they did for anything other than cleanings.

[–]MistaT33 1 point2 points ago

This is for medical purposes. We just use bedsheets and physical restraint when we need to start IVs, give shots, or get blood samples.

This is a backboard. They are used in case of spinal injury. Obviously an adult sized one wouldn't fit a kid, here is a kid sized one.

Not wtf.

[–]dye1337 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they actually do fit kids... doesn't matter if they're shorter than the board, it's still a board. Properly secured it's all the same. The rigs I work in have adult and pediatric boards but older than like 8 we have to use the adult boards since they won't fit

These are also used at dental offices; my 7yo had to have oral surgery under full anesthesia, and I mentioned that he's typically uncomfortable in dental chairs when tipped back because of his cerebral palsy/vestibular system, and they showed me this, which they have on hand to use w kids who can not be immobilized in other ways (obviously they try calming as the first resort--but there is the occasional dental emergency an child who will not stop flailing).

My dentist put me in one of these as a seven year old. I had gotten into a gnarly bike accident and needed stitches, plastic surgery on my lip, teeth pulled, etc. At first, they tried having my dad in the room holding me down. No go. Then they strapped me down into that thing. I broke out. Then they strapped me back in, had my dad sitting on top of me, and a nurse on my legs. That did the trick. I remember it vividly. Not fun.

This is the same type of things they use to immobilize prisoners who are receiving lethal injections.

I used to get strapped down with something almost like this when I went to the dentist as a child. It's still freaks me out to just think about it.

Not for discipline, for medical purpose like stitching cuts, my niece fell from her bike and doctor needed it to apply the stitches. this is legit and a nice story bro.

Fuck everything about this. Seriously, fuck every fucking thing about this.

[–]SabaBoBaba 0 points1 point ago

It's used in EMS. Spinal immobilization and the outstretched arms make establishing an IV line easier on an uncooperative child.

After you get him in, stand the thing up vertically and say "He truly was the King of Kids."

[–]Type_Zero 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then, has he's up there and already frightened and uncomfortable, you drain a bit of his blood to drink. Then you get your carving knife and get some flesh off of him. Just enough for everyone that'll be attending to have some. After that's done you can invite your fellow church goers and have a good ol' fashion mass, or communion, or w/e the fuck you want to call it.
