Just one phonogram, ough has six different possible sounds:

oh, as in though, dough

oo, as in through

uf, as in rough, tough

off, as in cough, trough

ah, as in bought, thought

ow, as in drought, slough

I am glad it's my primary language.

[–]nowami 44 points45 points ago

Don't forget up, as in hiccough

[–]Delta_6 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hiccough makes so much more sense than hiccup..

[–]homicidalkitteh 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless you're me and your hiccups actually sound like hic-CUP!

[–]Dentarthurdent42 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Hiccup" is supposed to be an onomatopœia. "Hiccough" came from a mistaken association with "cough". In some regions, it kept the spelling, but changed the pronunciation to the echoic "hiccup".

That's pronounced /lɒx/, for anyone looking for IPA.

[–]EdricStorm 0 points1 point ago

No! This is 'Merican English!

[–]m0nkee 8 points9 points ago

Or for those of us that speak "British":

aw, as in bought, thought

[–]Eshiik 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I speak American English, but I'd say 'bought' or 'thought' sounds closer to aw than ah when I say it, too.

The two sound so close together, though. But I consider ah to sound closer to the sound a sheep makes.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Generally all Americans say it like you-- "bawt" and "thawt." As do I.

If anything, British would lean just a little more towards saying "boat" for "bought."

You pronounce "bought" as "bort"? What?

[–]EridMeatGrinder 16 points17 points ago

We often run out of Bort licence plates.

[–]Clueless_Joe 3 points4 points ago

Well this is where the British/American accent barrier comes in.

[–]will_holmes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. It's consistent with the word "ought" as in "I ought to finish this bacon sandwich before it gets cold."

[–]WarPhalange 2 points3 points ago

"Ought" is pronounced "awt". If you pronounce it "ort", you are doing it wrong.

Yup, we do.

[–]ratajewie 3 points4 points ago

I'm just wondering if you're from Great Britain. Because in America, we pronounce the ough in bought like "aww" as in r/aww. Not trying to sound mean I'm just wondering where or sounds like aww.

in the case of Loughborough, two different ways in the same word!

(luff-bah-rah in case you wondered)

[–]Abboman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My girlfriend once told me a story about a guy from Australia coming to her University here in England and when asking where Loughborough was he pronounced it "Looga-baroo".

[–]aphoodis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ha I heard the same story from a friend about an American. I think it is one of those urban legends

edit: except said American pronounced it "looga-barooga"

[–]DaJoW 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bah, that's nothing. We have 15 different spellings for the same sound:

sj

sk

stj

skj

sch

j

ch

ti

ssi

si

g

sh

sti

xj

stg

All of these occasionally, but not always, make the "sj-sound" which does not exist in English. These spellings do not include dialects, which would add at least 2 more. Swedish is wonderful.

[–]kruksog 165 points166 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Language is fluid; because of printing, spelling is fairly concrete, whereas pronunciation is constantly changing. There are phonological processes occurring in whatever dialect you speak right now. I guarantee it.

i.e. this post conveys a misunderstanding of language, and is just generally stupid.

[–]dirtydirtyrobot 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't buy this. Many other languages have spelling that's fairly consistent with pronunciation despite the fluidity you refer to. Heck, the idea of a "spelling bee" doesn't even make sense to, say, a native Spanish speaker: you pronounce just as it's written. Done.

English spelling, on the other hand, is a shit-show of epic proportions (on the other hand, putting random pronunciations together out of context as OP has done makes little sense, so I actually agree with you in a way)

[–]SpankyJones10 1 point2 points ago

[–]SuicydKing 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair enough. However, sometimes jokes are allowed to be generally stupid, or based on a misunderstanding. This is r/funny, after all.

Anyway, here's a little sauce, to show that this bit of linguistic humor is actually vetted, and not just a silly image slapped together for the benefit of the internets.

Sorry for the joke at your expense, but I did read your comment in Dwight's voice.

[–]kruksog 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a linguistics major; I've heard this joke a million-billion times. I get what the joke is trying to say, but it is a misunderstanding. That's not my problem with it. What bugs me is that it perpetuates the misconception that English, specifically, is an 'illogical language,' when really all languages have peculiarities.

Anyway, that's my piece.

[–]SuicydKing 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh god, I'm sorry. People probably tell you this joke as soon as you let them know you're a linguistics major. It must get old. I understand completely.

EDIT: I really enjoy your choice of Dwight pic there, he looks like he's moving in for the kill.

[–]M0b1u5 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've heard this joke a million-billion times

Hyperbolic bullshit.

You won't have heard it more than 60 times. Tops.

[–]m3tathesis 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This and "Colorless green ideas dream furiously." are guaranteed to be heard by linguistics students.

This actually shows how written language does not reflect the state of the language, and that writing is more looking into the history of a language, as writing lags behind language evolution considerably.

[–]YouWillUpVote -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I mean... There's no denying English is a total cluster fuck of languages right? Illogical isn't how I would describe it... Mash-up maybe? Obviously pronunciations, lexicon, and all that change... But, is there any letter-based language that draws on as many diverse languages as English does? BTW, I'm asking lol... Not trying to be a dick... Simply curious

[–]m3tathesis 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not true. English is not as illogical as you think, when seen from a purely spoken point of view. The problem is that the writing system has not been updated to reflect changes in the language for a very long time.

For very illogical writing systems, try French.

[–]MEaster 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To me, French looks like they just stole all the vowels from the Welsh.

[–]YouWillUpVote 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lol, that's why i said "not illogical," I meant it is still like a bunch of rules and things borrowed from other languages... So, not illogical, just complicated when you try to put letters behind so many different languages' sounds. Which would bode well with what you're saying, that we need an update to close the gap between writing and speaking. I GOT CHU DO DAWG... Btw, I speak French fluently, and I find it is SO logical that it is illogical... If that makes any sense... Like over-complication sort of? Maybe trying too hard? Then their over-complicated writing just gets spit in its face, because French speaking throws so much shit out... Like speaking: J'parle pas francais vs. writing: Je ne parle pas francais...or if you wanna go real old school.. Je ne parle point francais........fucking french

[–]m3tathesis 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All I remember is that a French guy told me to just memorize all the spelling because the French writing makes no sense, even to him.

[–]YouWillUpVote 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]will_holmes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The words that wreck it are "hiccough" (which lots of people spell as the more logical "hiccup") and "phthisis" (which is a borrowed Greek term, not an English one, so you can't expect it to follow the same phonetic rules), you'd have "pough-teight-teau". That's easily pronounced phonetically, and it sounds exactly like potato.

[–]AlienGrill 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You say potato, I say ghoughphtheightteeau.

[–]nyohkitteh 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. There are rules on how to pronounce sounds based on the position of the letters in a word. "gh" only makes the sound "ff" at the end of a word, never at the beginning. "ti" only makes the sound "sh" when followed by "an" or "on."

The English language has a pattern. This picture is incorrect.

Also, if "gh" was at the beginning of a word we would pronounce it like the "gh" in ghost. That's just the pattern. There is not a different symbol for each sound in the English language.

[–]victordavion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ya, it's not like Japanese.

However, I'd like to point out that the pronunciation of "ti" in "Nation" is not equivalent to "sh" as in "shit". People tend not to notice or care, but English phonemes are far far far more complex that people will ever realize. Another example: The subtle difference between your and you're. Most people speak incorrectly ( read: imprecise) anyway, so whatever.

[–]nyohkitteh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most people speak imprecisely compared to what though? I mean, there isn't some dude on a hill with the correct way to pronounce the English language.

[–]withoutamartyr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

'ti' also takes on 'sh' after 'ia', as in 'tertiary'.

[–]nyohkitteh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Indeed. My point is that it does make a "sh" when it is the final two letters. In fact, I can't think of an English word that ends in "ti." Hm...

The problem with this is that you can't just take chunks of words out and slip then in somewhere else and have them be constant in pronunciation.

For example, the o in owl and the o in off aren't pronounced the same, even though they are the same letter.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but they're fucking related, dude (owl and off). And there's all kinds of examples of other words that use the "o" in the same ways.

The OP's example...the "o" in women is a fucking "i" sound. That just makes no sense.

What I'm saying is that he is making letters comparable to legos. If you look it up on wikipedia, they show the concept and then apply it to where the word GHOTI is completely silent.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fair, I get that.

But lots of people are still missing the point...the point is you can spell fish as ghoti, based on precedent usage in other words. That's pretty much it. It's true, and it's not a "misunderstanding" like some of the linguists have said. Although their points are valid--namely that spoken is far more fluid than written, and that's why we end up with peculiarities. But it doesn't mean the peculiarities and downright absurdities aren't there!

While the pronunciation of letters in English is hardly consistent, we can still narrow down the possible pronunciations of letters/letter clusters based on the position in the word.

For instance 'GH' is only pronounced like the letter 'F' when it occurs at the end of a word, the pronunciation of 'O' in the word 'women' (/ɪ/) is irregular and it is pronounced as either /oʊ/ or /ɒ/ in practically every other word, and 'TI' is pronounced like 'SH' only in the cluster 'TION'.

I have Hughes as a last name. You would not believe how many native English speakers think it's pronouced "Hugs" or "Hoogis".

You say "women" as "wimmin"? wtf

protip: the pronunciations and spelling have more to do with the etymology than anything else

[–]The_Punchmaster 1 point2 points ago

It's all contextual, though. You can't use that as an example until you can name me a word that starts with gh that sounds like "f".

Same with the others.

[–]Prof_LaGuerre 1 point2 points ago

Also GHOTI can be a silent word, as in:

gh as in though (/ðoʊ/) ;

o as in people (/'piːpəl/) ;

t as in ballet (/'bæleɪ/) ;

i as in business (/'bɪznəs/)

... Oddly just went over this today with someone else at work. Gotta love the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. Edited: Formatting

Remove redundant letters eg, fuck = fuk or fuc

They made the English language like that so you can weed out the illegal immigrants.

[–]Nebakanezzer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

where are all the condescending "bwhhaha english is hard" people from the front page a few days ago?

english isnt hard because of pronunciation, or characters, or words themselves.. it's the fact that one word can mean several different things with a different inflection or tone. then, furthermore, that word can mean several different things due to context/usage. and even furthermore there are multiple different ways to say the same exact thing, all slightly different from each other.

all this without even going into all the retarded phonetic sounding of words and spelling which seem to just be anarchy on paper.

If you're going to post something that isn't OC just run it through karmadecay.com. This is a repost of a respot of a repost, and it might be on accident but it's easy to avoid. (Unless karma points are something you actually care about.)

[–]kruksog 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Constructed languages have the opportunity to be fairly logical. Given the process of language change, natural language is always going to have logical peculiarities.

[–]victordavion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And yet constructed languages just don't seem to have a flow to them. Nor do they have much fun, either.

[–]m3tathesis 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Know that writing a language will always suck. If you study a language without writing, languages follow rigid rules.

For 'logical' languages, try Esperanto :)

[–]Dark_Prism 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is Esperanto really that logical? I was under the impression that it was mostly just a mix of English and Spanish that was created to provide an easy to learn universal language.

[Didn't read the wiki article, obviously. You'd think I could take 5 minutes to read something to answer my own question, but we all know that isn't going to happen. This is the Internet for god's sake!]

[–]m3tathesis 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is constructed language, which is suppose to be the easiest language to learn due to having rigid structure, without any exceptions. However, 'easy to learn languages' have their downsides: it is very difficult (or impossible) to communicate complex concepts. That was the major downfall of Esperanto, and why it never took off. I never learned the language myself, but it was suppose to liken to trying to teach physics with a vocabulary and grammar of a 10 year old.

I've always hated this image...

  1. I agree about "gh". "gh" words have always been a mindfuck for me. However, the vast majority of the time, words that have "gh" somewhere in it that changes the expected pronunciation of it, the "gh" occurs at the end or near the end of the word. For example, "thorough" and "cough".
  2. "Wimmen" is probably a mispronunciation of the word. It probably originated sounding too much like "woman", so the pronunciation changed over time. I'm just taking a shot in the dark at this, so I could be wrong.
  3. The "ti" in "Nation" is only made to make a "sh" sound because it ends in "-tion". The same can be applied to "-sion". It would not ever be pronounced "sh" unless it had the accompanied "-on" after it.

Logic'd.
