A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Remember in the campaigns, Id use these guys to control pathways to my main base that the enemy would regularly send troops down along.. Wololo, and theyd be fighting eachother and I could concentrate on that huge farm-fest I had going for no apparent reason...

[–]jalvey 421 points422 points ago

Oh yeah I remember when you'd do that!

[–]SemicolonD 194 points195 points ago*

If this is some comment to my english, I'm sorry, english is not my native language.. dont know what the correct sentence would have been.. "Remembering".. or something like that.

[–]TheAughtSpectrum 143 points144 points ago

You would just say, "I remember" rather than "remember".

[–]SemicolonD 162 points163 points ago

Ah yes ofcourse, so obvious.. sorry :)

[–]funkgerm 126 points127 points ago

No need to apologize. You speak better English than many native speakers. Plus, you are still trying to learn more and improve your English, so big ups to you sir/madam! ;D

[–]freepinellas 1 point2 points ago

Don't worry, scro. There's lots of tards living kickass lives. My first wife, she was half tarded. Now she's a pilot.

[–]simplyOriginal 30 points31 points ago

Saying it how you did, without "I", is like asking us if we remember it with you.

You were close enough that nothing needed to be said. anyways, AoE is a great game!

[–]flat_pointer 25 points26 points ago

Don't apologize for fucking things up in second/third/whatever language after the first. Given how many English-speakers on reddit just speak one language...

[–]jclemy 2 points3 points ago

Don't apologize. Your small English mistake made a lot of us smile. You're doing better in English than most of us native English speakers.

Without using I you were able to bring us into the story and feel a part of it.

[–]cakeandale 9 points10 points ago

You should start the sentence with "I". A sentence that starts with a verb is a command, telling the listener to do something.

[–]shit_flavored_turds 1 point2 points ago

Recall, I do, this lesson from school.

[–]OffInBed 4 points5 points ago

I feel like your english is so good, that he pointed out your mistake because your comment was nearly flawless in syntax, spelling etc.

If it had been more obvious that english wasnt your native language, you may not have gotten that criticism.

[–]boss1000 1 point2 points ago

He is joking because the way you posted your comment made it seem like we should remember the things you, specifically, did.

[–]AntarisXenal 1 point2 points ago

I believe he is either making a joke, or he also remembers when he would do the same thing. :) Your English is fine, the only thing I would change would be, if you were referring to yourself "I remember in the campaigns" instead of "Remember in the campaigns"

[–]stillalone 4 points5 points ago

How do you keep them alive long enough to do the conversion? Any tricks on managing them, since conversions have to be done manually?

I still play from time to time with my friends against the computer (custom scenarios to make the computer harder) and I would really like to build a lot of monks (or missionaries since I usually play Spanish) but I don't usually do much with them other than heal my friends longbowmen.

[–]TIAFAASITICE 1 point2 points ago

Have you tried custom AI, for higher difficulty? Blackwind Religion builds only monks and is quite interesting to play against.

[–]DelusionalCunt 121 points122 points ago

I really wish they would update all the original AOE games to run on modern PCs, and then start selling them again on various direct download sites. (steam, green man, Good old games etc..)

I bet they would make an absolute ton of cash.

[–]sports2012 63 points64 points ago

they still work on my computer...and i'm running 64 bit windows 7. There are plenty who still play.

[–]mdys91[S] 88 points89 points ago

[–]mahucharn 8 points9 points ago

This. I beta tested AOE 2: Age of Conquerors at age 8 because my Uncle was super cool & gave me his key. Never looked back until AOE 3, then I was all "What the hell is this?". True story.

[–]mctesh 2 points3 points ago

Hah, yeah. My friends and I are still playing it on occasion. It's kind of our religion.

[–]Insanara 3 points4 points ago*

What are you saying? As far as I know there is no AOE3...

[–]NewAccts 1 point2 points ago

I posted this to another comment. Figured you should know.

YSK you can find AOE2: Age of Kings online if you look hard enough. And if you install gameranger there are plenty of people still playing multiplayer games. I reinstalled it a few months ago. Had to uninstall it after a week, because I got into it way too fast. Was spending all of my free time playing it online against people. Bad news is, people still Paladin rush like crazy. Nothing worse than being in the early age, chopping wood when 150 Horses rush in and cut your villagers down. Btw, I was running it on Windows Vista. I just upgraded to 7 and Im thinking of reinstalling it to play it again.

[–]DelusionalCunt 3 points4 points ago

I had no idea they worked on Windows 7, i guess its time to go find my original Age of Empires that came in a cereal box.

[–]mdys91[S] 16 points17 points ago

That would be perfect, I used to make custom battles of like 200 elephants vs 921831 archers... maybe on a computer with a ram larger than 500mb i might get above 1fps

[–]mctesh 2 points3 points ago

I used to setup custom battles all the time at work just for kicks. I miss that job.

[–]balmanator 1 point2 points ago

Somebody paid you to do that?! And to think, I spent hours of my pre-teen years doing it for free.

[–]mctesh 2 points3 points ago

Yeah! I was an IT guy at a window company. The whole department (6 or so) was comprised of gamers. Every day during breaks and over the lunch hour, we'd all hop on Unreal Tournament and take on the guys from the engineering department. Even my boss would join in. During the slow parts of the year, a couple coworkers and I would play multiple game of AOE2 a day, sometimes lasting hours each. We even leveled Diablo 2 characters for a few weeks. I'd come in from 12-10:30 M-F and everyone else would leave at 5, so I'd usually spend my evenings setting up silly custom battles in AOE2 or finding out the most effective way to take down elephants (Mamelukes, FYI).

It was a great job and all of my friends told me I was a fool when I left it to go back to school. Now I get paid to surf reddit most of the day, but it's not quite the same...

[–]balmanator 1 point2 points ago

Now you get paid to surf reddit? This is absurd. I'm obviously being taken for a chump at my job.

[–]Zethos 1 point2 points ago

I found an update for AOE2 Conquerors that fixes the colour issues in win7 and adds a few new features...

http://www.xomicron.com/software/

Unfortunately it doesn't work on downloaded copies of the game (ive bought aoe2:conquerors 3 times after losing the discs and im not buying it again lol)

[–]xgiraffe 6 points7 points ago

you can use your downloaded copy on voobly.com they have a diagnostic tool that auto fixes the pirated copies

[–]Zwejhajfa 2 points3 points ago*

If you just want to fix the color issue, the simplest way is to close the explorer (via task manager) after you started the game. You can start it again after you've finished playing through the task manager -> run -> "explorer"). If you don't want to close the explorer every time follow the instructions here (the 9th post, not the original post)

[–]kiwisdontbounce 18 points19 points ago*

I'd buy AoE 1&2 if it had online and LAN support and some updated features.

[–]sports2012 16 points17 points ago

they do....look at gameranger. still tons of people who play.

[–]wildcard1992 15 points16 points ago

I've always read gameranger as gamer anger.

[–]Huggernaut 11 points12 points ago

Gamers Hell or Gamer Shell?

[–]JuicedCardinal 7 points8 points ago

Seriously, I would take a straight HD upgrade. My ignorance might be showing here, but if it was a pure graphical update, would that still possibly allow LAN-compatability with the original?

[–]G_Morgan 1 point2 points ago

AoE 2 had online and LAN support back in the stupid eras.

Although I can't get LAN detection to work on my current network. Had to use online mode and just point it at a local address. Same thing.

[–]cronini 1 point2 points ago

they do work on modern PC's

[–]DangerMouseToby 1 point2 points ago

I got AOE2 + Conquerors from amazon, just see if anything like game ranger will host AOE

[–]SirCrapo 1 point2 points ago

I actually just got back into AoE II four days ago. Didn't really have too much of a problem getting it to run on x64 windows 7. Running it on my big ole gaming PC which is pretty much as modern as it gets, and at the same time runs fine on boot camped win 7 on my macbook as well. Finally found the one game that a macbook can run, and glad it's AoE II.

[–]MrCrunchwrap 1 point2 points ago

It works. Go buy it. What made you think it doesn't? I've played LAN games of AoE2 with my friends in college for the past several years.

[–]mercury888 60 points61 points ago

can someone explain what's happening here?

[–]maushu 154 points155 points ago*

In Age of Empires you were able to convert units using these priests that made a very memorable sound ("wololo").

What happened here is that the priest (from the red team) turned the shirt of one of the girls into red ("converted" her to the "red team"). The other one (still in the "blue team") did what usually happens when different non-allied teams meet in the game.

The joke here is the reaction of said conversion in the context of real life.

Edit: Might also be a tongue-in-cheek of religion in real life (separating friends with different beliefs).

[–]darkstrategyhd 18 points19 points ago

Why thank you.

[–]subjunctive_please 12 points13 points ago

In Age of Empires, the monks made this noise when they "converted" people.

[–]1gunners4 19 points20 points ago

People, elephants, catapults. Priests could convert fucking anything.

[–]Asaoirc 21 points22 points ago

buildings!

[–]tryx 11 points12 points ago

Only with monotheism!

[–]Asaoirc 30 points31 points ago

because polytheists just aren't convincing enough for buildings.

[–]tryx 1 point2 points ago

Now that I think about it, converting an entire building is a hell of a lot less work if you can sum up your belief system on one slide.

[–]BetterDaysAhead 5 points6 points ago

I would take a single monk and dodge my ass off trying to get at a ballista tower and converting it. fml when the towers had murder holes also researched :S.

I also took 3 man monk teams with the forward monk, not dodging and getting healed from the rear along the way.

[–]TheJuniorControl 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for showing me this.

[–]fearofthesky 2 points3 points ago

It's hysterical, isn't it? I swear I hurt something laughing the first time.

There are far too many people here with Alzheimer's disease.

Edit: I apologise for making a joke on the internet with such bad taste. Clearly humour should be abolished; effective immediately.

[–]Dudedood 11 points12 points ago

I may have Alzheimer's, but it's a good thing I don't have Alzheimer's.

[–]Barnopottamous -1 points0 points ago

Ask me about my Attention Deficit Disorder, or pie or my cat. I have a bike. Do you like TV? I saw a rock. Hi.

[–]Icanhazcomment 41 points42 points ago

I doubt they have "Alzheimer's disease"

People who have seen it can downvote it, people who have not seen it will upvote it. When the picture gets so many upvotes that it makes it to the front page, it means that the majority has still not seen it. If a link is reposted over and over again, it will stop making it to the front page until an entirely new user base will come across and upvote it after a long time.

That is how Reddit works because the entire user base is not online 24/7. Calling these posts "reposts" or the users mentally ill is being daft because reddit is a link aggregation site so this was a repost even the first time it was posted on Reddit.

Just because you have seen it before does not automatically mean the majority of Reddit from nearly every different timezone in the world has also seen it. These "repost" comments on the front page posts are as annoying as Youtube comments saying "Zomg liek dis vid has 301 views and 3,000 likes..Youtube broke loll".

Stop this! use common sense.

[–]OrigamiRock 1 point2 points ago

I feel like this entire comment should be quoted verbatim on the reddiquette.

[–]zeHobocop 1 point2 points ago

This man gets it. Sadly people don't realize that a downvote is more powerful than a negative comment.

My best friend was obsessed with age of empires II, like bad. I stopped hearing from him for about 3-4 weeks. So I stopped over at his house and saw him sitting there, eyes bright red (he does this stupid thing that is also hilarious where he literally doesn't blink when he games and then his eyes start on fire (my 2 year old niece does the same thing, I'll say "derpe, what's the matter?" and she'll just look at me and I'll realize I'm just interrupting "map" on Dora and am the annoying uncle)) and I found out that he was playing age of empires II, he told me that he couldn't stop playing it, and it was taking over his life. He had called into work the past 3 days and was all sad about it, like he admitted he was doing heroin or something. I laughed it off and told him to just relax.

Either way, the next day (after staying up another night straight playing) he broke the game in half and invited me over. We watched the timberwolves and I took a picture of the broken game for something for us to laugh about in the future. Then, all of a sudden, he disappeared again. I came over to watch another wolves game and he was again playing age of empires II, I guess he borrowed it from a friend at work. That's when I actually kinda thought maybe he had a problem.

[–]tcmarck 2 points3 points ago

haha I have been playing so much Age of Mythology lately. This brings me so much joy. I love all of these games.

Priests were units that could convert enemy units into allies.(Normally the player's units were blue and the enemy's units were red.) When you used their ability to convert, they made a WOLOLO sound.

[–]asonjones 1 point2 points ago

What is preventing AOE4? I feel like it would sell a lot of copies.

[–]Zethos 1 point2 points ago

Ensemble Studios is gone. Remnants exist in a couple of other studios but the original is gone. Also Microsoft owns the IP and does not see any profit in making a usual PC only RTS. Instead they got a few studios to make Age of Empires Online; a F2P RTS with mmo elements. Its... not terrible but not as good as before. ):

[–]MrChaoticfist 2 points3 points ago

That AOE3 was butchered maybe. I would not touch another AOE game again with out some serious promises from the developers not to fuck around.

I thought it was goddamn excellent. Got it on sale on GFW for 10 cents about a year ago. But then, I like Age of Mythology...

can priests wololo other priests? Can't remember...

[–]Zethos 2 points3 points ago

Yeah they can. I believe you can upgrade resistance.. to conversion.

The trick is simple. Get two priests have one on one side and another on the other. Then get both of them to convert an enemy unit. Most of the times, the enemy unit would get "confused" and kinda get stuck moving to one and then moving to the other but not doing anything. And then he'd get converted. However, even if it doesn't work, there is still a good chance the unit will get converted if they start attacking one of the priests.

I remember when you could make as many monks as possible and convert an entire enemy village likely before the enemy had even realized..
