I bet most Redditors know 1984 is in references to a book about tyranny .

[–]Big_Baby_Jesus 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The book is specifically about the criminalization of anti-government thoughts. That's nothing like what we're actually seeing. No western government I know of has any problem with you hating their guts.

[–]jesticle 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Too many people miss this and focus just on the "surveillance" aspect of 1984. That wasn't Orwell's focus, it was just a tool he used for the story. The themes of war and "othering" of Eastasia and Eurasia to create a false national unity and prevent dissent ("We are at war with Eastasia/Eurasia. We have always been at war with Eastasia/Eurasia") and how easily that can be manipulated is a key theme many miss completely, and is one that actually can be seen in the real world.

I've read it. A few times actually. Chapter 3 is my favourite. It's where the protagonist talks to his colleague about newspeak and the destruction of language, in an effort to restrict the possibility to form thoughts of dissent.

[–]Ajjeb 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's a book a lot of people have read. I believe I know of seven or eight people who have read it, besides myself. It's just one of those books people make an effort to read because it gets referenced so much.

[–]Caboose-1 6 points7 points ago

I don't think I have read a book that has ever made me so depressed before. Took me like a week to be able to work up a smile after finishing it

[–]Lily_May 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Try reading "The Handmaiden's Tale" or "The Chocolate War". Give "Brave New World" a go too.

All of them, massively depressing.

[–]Zoccihedron 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only problem with Brave New World is that some people, including myself, like the society which ends up making it significantly less depressing than The Handmaiden's Tale. I haven't read The Chocolate War but I would bet that The Chocolate War is more depressing than Brave New World, in my opinion.

[–]Big_Baby_Jesus 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only problem with Brave New World is that some people, including myself, like the society

When you picture that society, you assume that you would be an Alpha. It's 1000 times more likely that you would be a Delta. Would you still like that society as a Delta?

[–]specialk16 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You would live with an specific purpose, your whole live, since the very conception, would be defined by that purpose. For the most part, you really won't care as much that you are not a Delta.

In any case, this pretty much happens already. How many people are depressed because they don't have an economic status they wish?

[–]erock82 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i tend to agree with you here. the only real difference i can think of is that we don't have flying cars yet and we are not mass produced (in a factory anyway). other than that it's hard to move up the social or economic ladder. those lower on the ladder don't much care about academic pursuits or knowledge. as for soma i think that you have the proto-drug in inventions such as anti-depressants, ritalin, adderal, things of this nature.

[–]GrandmasterFloss 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't that the point? You'd like it. Or you would'nt live at all.

[–]StanleyMk2 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on perspective, really. I guess you could view it as persistance, in a "Life will always find a way" manner.

[–]ian762 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am going to be honest and admit I only saw the movie of the road. (sorry)

That depressed me so much I darn't read the novel (especially after I heard about the baby scene.)

Would you recommend reading the book, or is it identical the same to the movie?

[–]StanleyMk2 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The movie is a lot darker, but in the book although it still has the dark, gritty feel, you can sense the minor victories that the father and son go through, and the imagery is a lot stronger in the book as the movie is quite literal. I would definitely recommend it, but don't rush it or else it will seem terrible, just take your time and think about it :)

[–]ian762 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I'll give it a go :) But I warn you, the road literally (correct use) made me down for 2 weeks lol. I think it was because it was so honest about the worst humanity has to offer, but at the same time those terrible things were what allowed humanity to survive :(

Oh dear here I go again...

[–]StanleyMk2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]ian762 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just finished it. I am glad I read it, but it was heart breaking in places. You were right about the movie being darker. The last paragraph threw me for a while as well.

[–]StanleyMk2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I remember sitting down for like 10 minutes just trying to think about it, because it made so much sense but was really an unspoken rule in society.

[–]ian762 1 point2 points ago

[–]specialk16 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brave New World wasn't too depressive for me, as I would totally live in a society where everyone is made for an specific purpose and we are all pretty much high all the time.

1984, on the other hand, is absolutely devastating.

[–]Zackeriess 1 point2 points ago

[–]Lily_May 6 points7 points ago

I remember finding 1984 incredibly derivative and over-done.

Then I flipped it over and took a look at the publishing date. This was the book all those other books I'd read fucking copied. It may not hold up well over time, but for what and when it was, it was goddamn mind-blowing.

[–]ColeSloth 2 points3 points ago

Kinda like reading "Neuromancer" and thinking it kinda sucks, but then realizing how it was made 10 years before you owned a computer and how far ahead of it's time it was.

Look, sweetie. 1984 is a popular book, and not as inaccessible as some "classic" literature. It's very widely read and a lot of people had to read it in school, and it is a part of popular culture. Is it really hard for you to believe that lots of people on the internet have read it?

[–]GrandmasterFloss 4 points5 points ago

Best Book ever

[–]Nemokles 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. I found it to be too predictable and with boring prose. Towards the end I was only reading to finish it.

[–]anonymous123421 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1984 wasn't written for plot-- it was written for political and social value. It means something. And the sad part is we all know how it ends. It's quite telling.

[–]Nemokles 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, but I don't find the political point that deep. I didn't feel like I learned anything from the book or that it gave me something I hadn't heard a thousand times before. Granted, that might not have been the case back in the day, etc, but I had very high expectations and was disappointed when finished. In lieu of any great insight I then wanted good literature and I found it lacking in that depatment aswell. It had its strong points, mind you, but I was expecting more.

[–]BenStillerIsGay 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Totally agree. I've never had to ask myself "ok...what was the point of that?" at the end of a book. Idk I just got this empty feeling when I finished it.

[–]anonymous123421 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The idea is that this book set the standard. Kind of like how one might say that Casablanca is cliche. They did it first.

And Animal Farm has a far worse ending than 1984-- but is that not the point?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That last chapter is fucking terrible.

[–]ohgodwhydidIjoin 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure most semi-intelligent people have read 1984 or at least Brave New World.

[–]ColeSloth 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'll find that many semi-intelligent people don't read books.

I read all the time, but I hate the mantra that "smart people" read books. They're just another form of entertainment for the most part. Just like television.

Just look at Twilight if you need an example of "other" book readers.

[–]Ygg_drasil 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Loved the book, but reading what Orwell put himself through to finish this book really drives it home to me.

[–]hobbur 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What did Orwell put himself through?

[–]ian762 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am guessing he is referring to the fact that Orwell died shortly after it was published and that it took him a long time to finish.

If you have never read it I recommend it. It made me look at politics and religion in a whole new way.

If you cant afford it let me know and I will send it to you.

[–]hobbur 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have read it but thanks so much for the offer, I didn't really know the background of him living in a retreat in Scotland and dying though. I know now.

Yeah, I read it just last week, always bee a sceptic but even more so now! Haha. I finished the last page in church for Mothers Day (dragged along) which was ironic in a way. I am reading a Handmaid's Tale now, another dystopian novel very similar to that of 1984 but all about women being used as surrogates "The handmaids".. Good so far!

:)

[–]ian762 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do enjoy dystopian novels, but I am not sure why? I think the reason I liked 1984 so much in that sense is that it was a (mostly) believable dystopia. People weren't in death lotteries or being executed for no reason, and the ones in power weren't in ivory towers.

Did you enjoy 1984?

Ill have to keep an eye out for The handmaids (sounds interesting), but I am tackling "classic literature" at the moment and am getting through Great Expectations. :)

He wrote it on his death bed. Pretty harsh really.

[–]thelastmonstercake 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He insisted on writing from a remote house on a remote island off the coast of Scotland. Needless to say there was no electricity and whenever the weather was bad it was very hard to get food and supplies to his little hut. He ended up dying of Tuberculosis mostly because of how damn damp his island retreat was. He knew it was bad for him, but he had this English Imperial guilt thing going and I think he thought he deserved to be sick. The other reason he chose to live there was because he thought Russia dropping an atom bomb on the UK was a very real possibility.

Well it would help if I red your comment correctly too. The Same Man by David Lebedoff is a good one, compares the backgrounds of Orwell and Evelyn Waugh, so you get a decent survey of Orwell's life.

We are very far from a '1984' police-state culture... Try Paris, 1943. the USA in 2012 doesn't even come close.

Was France suffering from a rebellion that put the wrong people in charge?

You assume OP was referencing the US.

He/She could easily be talking about the UK. I believe we're supposed to have the greatest number of cameras were resident (comparisons to a few other cities are at the bottom). Personally I'm not bothered by the cameras at all, but then again I don't live in London.

However, given how crap CCTV seems to be at helping solve crime I have to wonder how the budgets are justified.

"1984" was more about the mind fuck than it was about the police state. Sure, they'd come for you if you stepped out of line, but the whole point was that you didn't know there was a line to step out of, nor could you conceptualize how you'd do it if you wanted to.

My favorite comparison recently was that one with the quote about language, how they wanted to change language so no one could commit thought crime because the vocabulary didn't exist to question anything, followed by the "like" button on Facebook.

I'm not saying it was an accurate comparison, but i liked it nonetheless.

The question is how you view the world. Are we in a police state when every word spoken, written, and typed is archived and analyzed for possible terrorist threats?

Furthermore could one say that we are willing participants of our own oppression? How many of you hold jobs you hate to pay debt you have? Heck, let's set aside those individuals that over spent. What about a mortgage, educational , and/or vehicle loans? Medical expenses? It's easy to enslave a populace that doesn't think it's enslaved. If we're all beholden to corporations is this any different than a serfdom?

Speaking to the capitalism serfdom, if money is power, and power drives change in the US (and world wide, let's not kid ourselves), exactly how do the people stand up to corporations who lobby governments and bend laws to their will? Why can't we have hemp? It lacks THC, it's a proven strong, reliable, and renewable fiber. What about renewable energy? Why are the oil companies fighting change? If money was diverted away from oil industry we could accomplish a near oil free society. And what about subsided agriculture? The US produces ~60% of the worlds corn, more than half of that isn't edible by humans. It's used for stock feed and through a series of chemical processes broken down into other food additives. As tax payers we're paying so agribusiness can have cheap inputs to output cheap products.

I'm pretty sure I'm coming off as a liberal hippy, I'm not. There is money to be made in moving away from any of these finite/limiting technologies. My point is that because we've allowed corporations to dictate law we've allowed them to become our rulers and we don't even see it. We've allowed them to take spliced sections of genome and patent them. We've allowed them to say that digital copies affect their bottom line by a 100:1 ratio. We've allowed them to say that renewable energy sources and technologies aren't feasible and we've allowed them to say that our voice doesn't matter.

Think about the state of the world, not just the US. Multinational conglomerates influence the economy and government the world over. In South American the Coca Cola company invests in and supports bottling "franchises" (which is way of legally separating the two entities). These franchises nearly enslave the local people, destroy their economies and if they try to rise up and union? They have mysterious accidents. What about the slave workforce's used to make clothing or our electronics? Corporations exist without any nationality and are beholden only to their investors. If they're breaking the law they only act when they're caught, and even then they just lobby to change the laws.

I could rant on forever and provide example after example. We live in a near police state in the US because we've allowed corporations to make profits off war and violence. We've allowed them to keep most of the population in a state of fear and then profited off that fear. It's not our government we need to take our freedoms away from, it's our true rulers.

Note: I believe in capitalism, but as in all things there must be a balance. We can't live in a extreme environment. Any direction of extremism is bad for all.

I personally would rather have cctv than not have it.

It is however a fine line to tread between protecting people and following them, but if you have a rudimentary understanding of RIPA you see that it isn't really used to spy on people.

[–]Hellzapoppin 1 point2 points ago

I expect feelbetternow said 'yikes' because the ability to track an entire populations movements on a daily basis is a lot of power to hold.

The police / government having this kind of ability should at least raise concerns regarding how the technology is deployed and regulated.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The police / government having this kind of ability should at least raise concerns regarding how the technology is deployed and regulated.

Except they dont. The manpower required for that would be astronomical and unfeasible. And I still fail to see why it would matter.

[–]Hellzapoppin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except they dont.

Well, we are posting in a thread about a fictional novel set in a dystopian future where such technology has the possibility to exist. You have to expect a certain amount of speculation over things that are not strictly a reality.

the manpower required for that would be astronomical and unfeasible.

I think it is more a question of facial recognition software being improved (and it is improving, rapidly) and a tagging system being developed so that these technologies can be used to data mine HD CCTV footage. This is very feasible, though expensive to establish and deploy. The potential exists if anybody were inclined to pump a lot of cash into development.

And I still fail to see why it would matter.

Why does it not matter if the police know where you are on a minute to minute basis?

[–]feelbetternow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't like technology (or any law enforcement activity) that invades the privacy of a citizen without adding any actual security value. What security cameras do is create the illusion of security (much like the TSA security theater) without actually reducing crime. In cities that have deployed surveillance cameras (London, NYC, Chicago), crime is down in the spots with cameras...and up in the blind spots. The law enforcement answer to this? "We need more cameras."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Security cameras are not there to prevent crime, they are there to help solve crimes. I am not sure why you think differently.

And wouldnt it be obvious that if they are able to lower crime in the areas with the cameras..that adding cameras to areas without them would lower the crime in those areas we well? Your argument seems poorly thought out.

That building is about 5m from New Scotland Yard which lines the other side of Dean Farrar Street. The building pictured is the Association of Chief Police Officers.

You might disagree with the security around it, but photographing a building covered in cameras a stones throw from Parliament in Westminster and using it to illustrate the notion of a police state is a little misguided, imo, particularly when you consider the fact that terrorists have been targetting London for decades.
