The dude flying through the air is called O'Doyle, the photographer was http://www.samadamsphotography.com, he used a Canon 1D with a 15mm lens. The photo was taken on the 26th August 2006 at 16:10:27. The event was the 2006 'Double Dutch' Jam in New Mexico. The rider walks away unscathed, more or less. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=WfLjJbFA_o8#t=172s

I knew I had seen this photo before and had seen the vid, but I couldn't remember where. Doing a lot of searching I found out the above information and then eventually the vid on YouTube.

You know how you're searching for something on the 'net and you find one piece of information then another and it slowly reaveals itself? Fuck that. I want my hour back. This totally was not worth it.

Also, the photo was posted to FailBlog, which is where I first saw it.

Edit: Forgot to say, this is Albuquerque, NM. And it was closer to two hours of searching. Double fuck. :(

No flipping way that was shot at 15mm. Shooter would have to be almost in the landing zone to get that perspective.

You've pretty much described the MO of an extreme sports photog. Also, here's the exif.

To ease the "cringe" factor. I'm picturing a giant tub of pillows just out of frame.

No feeling is worse than being mid air knowing what is about to happen is going to cause you a great amount of pain.

I totally agree. I remember a while back I was skating with some friends and long story short I fell into a 'bowl' and as I was going down I just heard myself think 'greeeeeat, this is going to suck.'.

Well, flying is throwing your self at the ground and learning how to miss.

What kind of an idiot would do that without ANY kind of protection? Not even a helmet? Idiot.

Context?
(are his brains still inside his skull?)

This is from a video, he rolls out of the crash just fine, the angle the photographer is at makes it look a lot worse than it actually is.

Fisheye lens + ridiculously deep angle makes him look twice as high in the air than he actually is.

He seriously should've worn a helmet.

I do not think that his brains were inside his skull before the jump.

I've always hoped one day I'd randomly find the 'after' picture of this set somewhere on teh Internets.

Edit: oh wow, someone has posted a video and now I see the rider is okay. here: http://www.reddit.com/r/PerfectTiming/comments/r525r/their_faces_say_it_all/c432lw0
